The Winding Stair and other poems.

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1933 - Octavo. Original green cloth, titles and geometric pattern to spine gilt, pictorial design by T. Sturge Moore to front board in blind, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. With the dust jacket. Contemporary ownership inscription to front pastedown, ticks in pencil to contents page. Top edge dust toned, slight rubbing to extremities, a little foxing to endpapers; a very good copy in the jacket with minor loss to head of spine and nicks to extremities. First edition, first impression of Yeats's follow-up collection to The Tower, containing some of his best, and most difficult, poems, such as "Blood and the Moon", "A Dialogue of Self and Soul", "Vacillation", and, of course, "Byzantium", and thus full of "those images that yet / fresh images beget; / that dolphin-torn, and gong tormented sea". A smaller collection, notably lacking the famous "Byzantium" among others, under the same title (but without "and Other Poems") had been printed in New York in 1929. Wade 169.         Don Herold published "Tribune Syndicate" pen and ink illustration art

n.p., n.d.. 13.5" x 10.5". "Illustration original art. Pen and Ink on bristol board, 13.5"" x 10.5"". Soft soiling / handling marks, with small stain mid art and surface abrasion / shearing to the board around the art (although the art seems to have skirted the damage). Verso with publishers identification notes of "" ... Wanted 9:30 am Monday / Tribune Syndicate."" Signed by Don Herold lower left ""Don Herold"".A spectacular inked cartoon most likely published in a Tribune Syndication. This syndication was originally a part of the Chicago Tribune, who launched the Tribune Media Services in 1933.The art depicts a husband and wife in a classic portrayal of the wife laboring over washing dishes and the husband off in dream land, pondering. The caption states:He: ""I'm going to send aunt Maggie Christmas telegram No 12. It's a sweet sentiment""She: ""See if there's a telegram form you can send me to say you'll be glad to help with these dinner dishes""Maybe best appreciated by a member of the female persuasion; however, the piece is nicely detailed and vibrantly inked. Although unclear which publication week this was ultimately included in, Herold was a regular contributor to several magazines and this piece depicts Tribune Syndicate note on the verso. In addition, Herold also submitted satirical art to numerous other national magazines. Signed by Herold lower left, this large spectacular piece is in great condition and would display beautifully framed."

Recueil de questions, proposées à une société de savants, qui par ordre de Sa Majesté Danoise font le voyage de l'Arabie.Amsterdam, S.J. Baalde; Utrecht, J. van Schoonhoven & comp., 1774. 4to. Set in roman type with incidental Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, Syriac and 1 word in Coptic. Near-contemporary tanned sheepskin, gold-tooled spine.

      - Chadenat 1933; Gay, Bibl. de l'Afrique en de l'Arabie 3366; STCN (3 copies); Macro, Bibliography of the Arabian Peninsula 1593. Hans Bernhard Merian's French translation of Michaelis's Fragen an eine Gesellschaft gelehrter Männer (1762), prepared during the early stages of Carsten Niebuhr's Danish expedition to the Middle East. It is the first edition in any language to be printed in the Netherlands. Johann David Michaelis, a famed German Orientalist and theologian, was one of the scholars who prompted the important Danish expedition to Egypt, Arabia and Syria (1761-1767), led by Carsten Niebuhr. Michaelis hoped to investigate the relationship of the southern Arabic dialects to Hebrew, and to verify obscure botanical and zoological information in the Bible. For this purpose he composed the present 100 "questions". It includes the instructions for the expedition by Frederick V of Denmark, a 35-page account of Yemen and an extract of Carsten Niebuhr's account of Arabia (not included in the first French edition of 1763). Back of first free endleaf with traces of removed bookseller's(?) ticket. With an occasional small rust spot, but otherwise in very good condition and only slightly trimmed, leaving large margins. Binding with minor suface damage and wear at the hinges and extremities, but otherwise also very good. Important preparatory studies concerning Egypt, Arabia and Syria, written and first published during the early stages of a voyage. [Attributes: First Edition]

Portrait frontispiece by Augustus John. Ink ownership inscription to half title. Spine a little sunned, ends and corners lightly rubbed, a lovely copy in excellent condition.         Report of the first scientific expedition to Manchoukuo under the leadership of Shigeyasu Tokunaga. June - October 1933. Section V [Zoology]. Tokyo, Office of the Scientific Expedition to Manchoukuo, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Waseda University, 1934-1939. 12 volumes (26.5 x 19 cm). With many illustrations in text, 287 full-page plates (126 coloured) and a folding table. Original publisher's stiff printed wrappers.

BMC NH supp., p. 1315 (lacking 4 volumes). The fifth section, on zoology, of a general report concerning the research of the Japanese in Manchuria. The complete work is divided into six sections with a general report, geology, geography, botany, zoology and anthropology, but the present is the largest and most important section, nearly as large as the other five together. The articles thoroughly treat the fish, birds, mammals, insects, spiders & scorpions, reptiles & amphibians, crabs, molluscs, etc. of Manchuria. The research for at least the present part was undertaken primarily in the province of Jehol in the southwest part of the Manchurian state established by the Japanese, now parts of Hebei, Liaoning and Inner Mongolia, northeast of Beijing. The articles were written by numerous important Japanese scientists and naturalists, and appear here in English and (apparently somewhat abridged) in Japanese. By the present section V, the articles were printed haphazardly, making it difficult to find the section complete.Very good copies, spine of some volumes damaged. List with details of the collation available. Extremely rare reports on the zoological research of the Japanese during their controversial occupation of Chinese Manchuria.

        DARKNESS AT PEMBERLEY

New York: The Century Co, 1933. First Edition. Very Good binding. First published the year before by Gollancz, it should not surprise that this early work by T. H. White is a "collegiate mystery" as he had only recently finished at Cambridge. Uncommon title, this First American Edition copy has no writing in the book; the preliminary pages (only) have some light foxing. It appears that a pocket and date stamp slip have been removed from the rear endpapers, but this book presents quite well. There are no external marks. Very Good binding.

A beautiful volume by one of the 20th Century's most celebrated printmakers and chroniclers of country life. Leighton's concerns regarding the demise of traditional agriculture in England were a major motivation for this heartfelt narrative and masterly collection of engravings. She emigrated to the United States in 1939, became a U.S. citizen in 1945, where she lived until her death in 1989. Very scarce with such attributes. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.         Le Corset dans l'Art et les Moeurs du XIIIe au XXe Siècle

1933. First Edition . Signed. LIBRON, Fernand and CLOUZOT, Henri. Le Corset dans l’Art et les Moeurs du XIIIe au XXe Siècle. Paris: F. Libron, 1933. Large, thick folio (11 by 15 inches), original gilt-lettered cream wrappers, uncut and partially unopened, original glassine wrapper, original faux alligator slipcase. $4000.Limited first edition, number L of only 80 copies not available for sale (from a total edition of 880), of this erudite history of “the artifices that women employ in order to support and perfect their fragile beauty,” with numerous fashion plates (12 in color), facsimiles and in-text illustrations on nearly every page. Inscribed on the half title, “Hommage de l’auteur a Madame C. Capaldi, sa dénoncé collaboratrice, Paris le 20 Mai 1937, F. Libron,” and accompanied by 15 separate plates from the “Album” laid in.Written some years after the heyday of corsetry by Fernand Libron, president of the Chambre Syndicale des Fabricants de Corsets, and Henri Clouzot, conservateur of the Musee Galliera (better known today as the Musee la Mode et du Costume), this monumental costume book pays special tribute to Ernest Leoty’s very scarce Le Corset a Traverse les Ages (1893), which includes detailed cutting paterns and technical information for the tailor who specializes in making corsets. “A corset is somewhat similar to an umbrella in its construction. When the umbrella is raised, the fabric tautens. The ribs are reinforced with metal tips, to which the fabric of the umbrella is sewn. These tips hold the fabric in a tautened condition while the umbrella is in use. It is the same with a corset” (O.Y. Dalziel). Text in French. Accompanied by 15 loose engravings, listed in the index of illustrations under the heading “Album.” Hiler, 544. Book and plates fine, spine panel of original glassine perished, slipcase only slightly rubbed. A fine copy.
