Garden City: Doubleday, Doran and Company, Inc., 1933, c1928. Reprint of 1933. Very good in dark blue cloth covered boards with silver colored text stamping on the spine and the same on the front board which is quite bright and clean. The top edge is trimmed with a light blue-gray stain and the other edges of the text block are untrimmed. A small octavo measuring 8" by 5 1/2" with a small closed tear to the cloth at the head of the spine. The hinges and joints remain tight and strong. Without its very scarce issued dust jacket. Signed and inscribed on the first free end page: "To Harold and Helen Arnold | from a grateful newcomer | to the Isles of Shoals | Henry Beston". Also, tipped on to the fly title page is an original, 4" by 2 1/3", black and white photograph of the author standing in shorts, sport coat and tie at the corner of a stone structure with waves breaking in the distance. Sub-titled: "A year of life on the Great Beach of Cape Cod" is the treasured, natural history classic narrative of Beston's year-long stay at the "Fo'castle" (a small, two-room cottage overlooking the beach facing the Atlantic Ocean). In 1959 Beston gave his little cabin and surrounding acreage to the Massachusetts Audubon Society. In 1964 to honor Beston and his book the cabin was dedicated a National Literary Landmark. 222 pages of text and illustrated with 31 black and white photographic plates by William A. Bradford and others. Laid-in at the rear of the book is a color 1985 postcard of the Outermost House, Nauset Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

This highbrow weekly appeared until 1933 in Berlin, first under the editorship of Stefan Grossmann and then under that of Schwarzschild himself.the Neue Tage-Buch became under Schwarzschild's guideance far and away the best of all German emigre publications" (Hans-Albert Walter, 1966) As one of the more important anti-fascist periodicals.         Johanna und Esther. Eine Chronik ländlicher Ereignisse.

Zsolnay, Berlin, Wien, Leipzig 1933 - 582 S., 4 Blatt. Orig.-Leinenband. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Five Million in Cash

London: Jarrolds, 1933. Very Good/Good. A very unusual copy of the 1933 1st UK edition of this, O.B. King's (Tiffany Thayer's) only published mystery. Not only is this copy INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the front free-endpaper BUT IT ALSO APPEARS TO BE A PRE-PUBLICATION COPY, WITH A "SAMPLE COPY--NOT FOR SALE" LABEL PASTED-ON JUST ABOVE O.B. KING'S INSCRIPTION. Solid and VG (very light soiling to the panels, light bumping at the upper tip) in a Good only dustjacket that --sadly-- is missing the upper 50-60% of the rear panel. That portion has been crudely torn off but the spine and front panel (with its wonderful Douglas Moir illustration) are intact and relatively bright and clean. 12mo, 287 pgs.

GREYHOUNDS: A CHART SHOWING THE RELATIONSHIPS OF FAMOUS GREYHOUNDS OVER A PERIOD OF NEARLY 200 YEARS, GIVING IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON AGE, SEX AND COLOUR. PREPARED BY EDWARD C. ASH.

London: Hutchinson & Co., []. 1933 - Lithographed chart, mounted on original linen and folding into original chestnut colour faux-leather slipcase bearing the title in gilt (Good, map and slipcase slightly soiled, some creasing and mild staining to chart in upper-left and upper-right quadrants), cm (inches). An amazing large format chart depicting the genetic lines of the leading Racing Greyhounds in Britain, from the mid-18th Century until the 1930s. This fascinating chart, the result of painstaking research, employs an inter-linked series of stem charts to depict the genetic lines of the most famous British Racing Greyhounds, from the mid 18th Century (on the left side) over to the 1930s (on the left side). It goes from the old breeds of nobleman and gentry that established the modern sport, up to the sensational racers of the Art Deco age, as noted: "This chart covers a period of nearly 200 years, and shows connection (line of descent) between Lord Orford, Major Topham, Col. Thornton, Mr. Mundy and Lord Rivers’ Greyhounds and Waterloo Cup, Plate and Purse winners and some important modern dogs and Stud dogs and matrons of the breed." The chart was separately issued, but was also meant to compliment Edward Cecil Ash’s The Book of the Greyhound (London, 1933). Ash was then Britain’s foremost author on canine subjects, although greyhounds, of various kinds, were his passion. References: OCLC: 43509153.

Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. With an Introduction by Bertrand Russell. With English Translation by C. K. Ogden. Reprinted (with a few corrections) (= International Library of Psychology, Philosophy and Scientific Method).

Kegan Paul etc., London 1933 - 189 S., 1 weißes Blatt, 4 Blatt Anzeigen. Orig.-Leinenband. Deutsch-englische Parallelausgabe. Auflage selten. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Handsome Donkey

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Co, 1933. Decorative Cloth. Collectible; Very Good. Wonderful 1933 children's tale about "Baldasarre" the "handsome donkey" and his friend "Tedesco", the dachsund. VG in its mustard cloth, with mild darkening along the spine. Octavo, beautifully illustrated thruout by Emma Brock.THIS COPY ALSO INCLUDES 4 ORIGINAL BLACK-AND-WHITE PHOTOS, 2 OF WHICH ARE OF A DONKEY AND DACHSUND. THE DONKEY AND DACHSUND PHOTOS BELONGED TO EMMA BROCK AND MARY GOULD DAVIS ( BASED ON THE INSCRIPTIONS ON THE BACK OF EACH PHOTO) AND WERE VERY LIKELY THE MODELS FROM WHICH THEY ILLUSTRATED AND CREATED "BALDASARRE" AND "TEDESCO".         42nd Street

New York: Grosset & Dunlap. Very Good. [1933] (c.1932). PhotoPlay Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . (no dust jacket) [ex-rental library book but minimally marked as such (a couple of faint stamps of "Butler Block Pharmacy, Lansing, Mich." on front pastedown and verso of ffep, plus a couple of handwritten numbers); a solid book, moderately worn and lightly bumped at several corners, spine cloth faded (author/title in red, still readable), spine slightly turned]. (B&W photographic endpapers) Photoplay Edition (tie-in) for the 1933 Warner Bros. film adaptation, which in turn was adapted into the hit 1980 Broadway show of the same name. The book is illustrated not in the usual fashion of photoplay editions (with stills bound into the text), but in this case by an array of stills on the endpapers -- a total of twelve different scenes (six in the front of the book and six in the back). Although it might seem at first glance as though the novel and the movie cover pretty much the same narrative trajectory -- the blurb in the front of the book describes it as "the story of a musical show from the time of casting to the opening night" -- in fact the book is a good deal rougher than the film in its depiction of the seamier side of showbiz. Aptly described by online critic Scott Miller as "a wild, outrageous, and very adult, pulp potboiler [with] lots of casual sex, lots of drinking, lots of adultery, lots of lies," it's considerably more realistic and less romanticized than the movie, with its melodramatic excess ("You're going out a youngster, but you've got to come back a star!"), informed as it certainly was by the author's own youthful experiences as a vaudeville and nightclub dancer. (It's also worth noting that in the novel, the stage director Julian Marsh and the juvenile lead Billy Lawler (played in the film by Warner Baxter and Dick Powell, respectively) are lovers -- a relationship that was obviously "unsuitable" for the screen, even though the full force of the Motion Picture Production Code wouldn't be brought to bear on Hollywood filmmakers until over a year after this film's release.) Ropes followed this book, his first, with two similarly-themed novels ("Stage Mother," 1933, and "Go Into Your Dance," 1934), before settling into a career as a Hollywood screenwriter of B-movies, often with a musical angle or element (e.g. SWING IN THE SADDLE, SONG OF ARIZONA, MELODY RANCH, etc.). A very scarce book, in any edition. .

        Paris de Nuit

Paris: Edition Arts et Metiers Graphiques, 1933. FIRST EDITION OF BRASSAÏ'S MASTERPIECE, ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL AND BEAUTIFUL OF ALL PHOTOBOOKS. Paris de Nuit is "a ravishing book object in a purely physical sense. The printing represents arguably the most luscious gravure ever seen, the blacks being so rich and deep that after handling the book one expects to find sooty deposits all over one's fingers. The gradation of tones is wonderfully subtle, describing an apparently infinite range of black and near-black tones. The layout, with its characteristic full-page bleeds, never more felicitously employed, takes us from image to image, from page to page, and across night-time Paris, with effortless panache... One should think of it as amongst the best produced and influential photobooks ever" (The Photobook, Vol. I). Roth 101.Complete with 60 stunning photogravure reproductions. Paris: Edition Arts et Metiers Graphiques, 1933. Quarto, original photographically illustrated flexible boards, spiral bound; custom box. A little edgewear and creasing to boards; a beautiful copy with strong, vivid images. Very Good.

BROMO BOMBASTES: A Fragment From a Laconic Drama.

First edition, first impression, limited to 100 copies. Inscribed presentation copy. Original deep black boards with printed label to front board. A near fine sharp copy with two unobtrusive water stains to front board. Endpapers lightly foxed, otherwise fine internally. Inscribed on the front free endpaper "Gaffer Peeslake - Cesspit - Corfu - Greece - To Theodore with undying love". Inscribed by the author to Theodore Stephanides, the doctor, poet, translator, naturalist and polymath immortalised in Gerald Durrell's My Family and Other Animals and lifelong friend to the Durrell family. Theodore and Lawrence enjoyed a warm friendship, sharing a love of Corfu and corresponding over many years to consult on matters of literature and Greek flora and fauna; such was the debt Durrell felt to Stephanides' generously shared knowledge that he dedicated both The Greek Islands (1978) and The Magnetic Island to his friend and mentor. In 1933 Durrell was 21, and this verse drama was his third publication, preceded only by two collections of poetry. An early work with a terrific association and a monument to a fabled literary friendship.

First edition. "The long gap between von Opel's rocket-propelled glider and the modern work on rocket airplanes is filled by just one name: that of the Austrian engineer Eugen Sänger.
