The Comanche Barrier to the South Plains Settlement: A century and a half of savage resistance to the advancing white frontier

Glendale: Arthur H Clark Co, 1933 424+[4 ad] pages with frontispiece, 4 maps, 8 illustrations, bibliography and index. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/2") bound in blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine. First edition. In the annals of the great plains and prairie county south of the Arkansas river, the achievements of the pioneer loom large; for in this land the frontier era must be measured not in years or decades but in centuries. The Spaniards, who approached the country from the south and west, scarcely entered it at all, and it took, half a century of seasoning before the Anglo-Americas could subdue. it. Powerful forces delayed the advanced of the Europeans into this region, and not the least of these was the Comanche Indians. They guarded well the vast, treeless land that was their home and, what is more, they made life unsafe for those white men who dared to settle near the periphery of the Comancheria. Before Daniel Boone had entered Kentucky they were harassing the Spaniards at San Antonio, and as late as 1874 they took scalps within ten or fifteen miles of that old Spanish town. The purpose of this book is to give an account of the conflict of these superb savage horsemen with the more advanced peoples who finally succeeded in occupying their country. The narrative in part has to do with Spain's achievements and failures in dealing with nomadic Indians; it reveals the harsh tactics of the Anglo-American frontiersmen as they grappled with an Indian problem more puzzling than any they had ever known before; it brings out the mistakes and misapplied efforts of governments controlled by eastern men and struggling with problems peculiar to the west; and through it all runs the story of a nomadic culture debauched by vices of its more advanced neighbors, hurled about by currents of westward expansion, and finally confined and compelled to become a part of the civilization it hated and resisted to the last. Condition:Some light scuffing to boards, corners bumped, light rubbing to spine ends else a very good copy.

        Thurmond-Holmes Lynching: Real-photo postcard, titled "San Jose, Calif. Nov. 26 - 1933 11:25 P.M."

[N.p.], 1933. 1 vols. 3-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches. Fine. 1 vols. 3-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches. Photo of California's Last Lynching, 1933. On Nov 9, 1933, 22-year old Brooke Hart was kidnapped and held for $40,000 ransom. A massive manhunt led to Thomas Harold Thurmond. After six hours of interrogation, Thurmond confessed and named his accomplice, John M. Holmes. They both admitted murdering Brooke and dropping his body into the San Francisco Bay. On the evening of the 26th, a lynch mob broke into the Santa Clara County Jail and dragged Holmes and Thurmond to the St. James Park where 3000 onlookers from San Jose and the surrounding area, chanted "string them up." Governor 'sunny Jim" Rolf refused to call out the National Guard to protect the kidnappers, and referred to the lynching as a "lesson." "Thurmond was hung from the limb of a venerable mulberry tree, and, the limb of a great elm a few feet away served as Holmes' gallows a second or two later." - 'History of San Jose' by Clyde Arbuckle. Souvenir hunters so damaged the trees that they had to be cut down, and not a trace remains of them. This lynching was the last to take place in California, and was the basis for John Steinbeck's short story, "The Lonesome Vigilante."The photograph depicts the the three limbs of the tree rising from the trunk at center, and the hanging corpses of the two lynched men, Thurmond at left, partly clothed, above a small group of onlookers; Holmes (unclothed) at right. AN EXTRAORDINARY DOCUMENT OF AMERICAN SOCIAL HISTORY.

"A Comedian Sees the World" [complete in five issues of] Woman's Home Companion

Springfield, Ohio: Crowell Publishing Company, 1933. Near Fine. Five consecutive issues. Folios. Pictorial wrappers. Small tears at the spine ends, slight soiling or offsetting on the covers, and a little waviness at the bottom of some pages, else bright and fresh, very near fine issues. Chaplin spent over a year touring Europe between 1931 and 1932. His journal of the trip was published in five issues of the Woman's Home Companion published between September 1933 and January 1934. It wasn't published in book form until 2014, when research revealed that the articles may have been his first published work. The trip also influenced his view of the world, leading him to tackle more controversial subjects with Modern Times (1936) and The Great Dictator (1940). Uncommon found together and in such bright and attractive copies.

The Hogarth Press, London., 1933. First edition. Octavo. 163 pages. In other words, there is no small paper issue of the first edition. Illustrated with four drawings by Vanessa Bell and six other plates. This copy has escaped the usual darkening of the spine which almost always afflicts the book. Near fine in near-fine, very slightly spotted dustwrapper with a few small nicks. A superior copy.

Eine auf blaues Papier gedruckte Verlagsankündigung des Internationalen Instituts für Geistige Zusammenarbeit liegt bei. // SIGMUND FREUD AN ALBERT EINSTEIN - »Lieber Herr Einstein! New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1933. First Edition. First Printing, with publisher's "F-H" code on copyright page. Octavo (21.5cm); evergreen cloth, with titling and decorative elements stamped in black and orange on spine and front cover; Art-Deco patterned endpapers; dark yellow topstain; dustjacket; [viii],295pp. Faint suggestion of a forward lean, else a fresh, Fine copy. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $2.50), gently spine-sunned and lightly edge-worn, with several short tears, attendant creases, and small chips to extremities, and some unobtrusive rubbing to front panel; Very Good+. Attractive copy of Burnett's seventh book, a novel set in California and centered around a down-and-out gambler, his interaction with gangsters, and his love affair with dog racing - particularly with a black greyhound named Dark Hazard. Burnett became involved in dog racing for a time while writing Dark Hazard, and even owned a greyhound named War Cry. Easily the scarcest of Burnett's trade editions - particularly in dustjacket; the Book Club edition, issued in August, 1933, is ubiquitous, and frequently misidentified by booksellers and auctioneers alike. Basis for Alfred E. Green's 1934 film of the same name, starring Edward G. Robinson and Genevieve Tobin, and a 1937 B-picture titled Wine, Women, and Horses. Hubin, p.58; Baird 359.

        Light in August. A novel.

Chatto & Windus, London 1933 - The first UK edition. 8vo. 480pp. Red cloth lettered in gold at spine and with the publisher's red top edge stain. Edges lightly spotted. A small area of discolouration to the base of the upper board, and a little fading to the cloth at the head and base of the backstrip where the dust wrapper is defective. A narrow strip of light partial browning to endpapers and a hint of very light spotting to one or two leaf margins. A small bump to the lower corner of the rear board impacts the corners of the last two or three leaves. A nice crisp copy in a somewhat distressed example of the uncommon Walter Goetz-designed dust wrapper, non-price-clipped but a little spotted, tanned at spine panel, chafed and with several short tears and half a dozen areas of edge loss, primarily to the spine ends and upper edge. This copy from the library of noted man of letters Bonamy Dobrée, with his inked signature to the front free endpaper, and also a tiny Poetry Bookshop plate to the base of the front pastedown. The author's seventh novel, a Southern Gothic classic, originally published in the US in 1932 in a print run of 11,000 copies, with this significantly more uncommon English edition appearing a year later in a print run of 2,500 copies.         Franklin D. Roosevelt’s First Inaugural Program - Given to the Wife of His Vice President

Washington DC 1933 - "Official Program of the Inaugural Ceremonies Inducting into office Franklin D. Roosevelt, President of the United States, John N. Garner, Vice President of the United States, March 4, 1933." Presentation copy with gold embossed inscription to Mrs. John N. Garner (whose biography appears on page 21). Washington DC: Ransdell Incorporated, 1933. First Edition. Quarto, deluxe flexible leatherette binding, gold embossed with title and presidential seal. Copy 17 Signed by Cary T. Grayson, Chairman, General Inaugural Committee, and inscribed by the program committee chair: "To the Vice President-elect with/the affectionate regard of J. Fred Essary." Scarce edition given as gifts to distinguished guests. Fine. John Nance Garner (1868 - 1967), nicknamed Cactus Jack, was a southern conservative Democrat. He served as Texas state representative from 1898 to 1902, U.S. Representative from 1903 to 1933 and Speaker of the House from 1931 - 1933. In 1932, Garner ran for the Democratic Presidential nomination. New York Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt was chosen, getting the necessary two-thirds after agreeing to make Garner his Vice-Presidential candidate. Garner was re-elected to the Seventy-third Congress and as Vice President of the United States at the same time. (Only Schuyler Colfax had previously served as both Speaker of the House and President of the Senate on the same day). Garner resigned from the House just before being sworn in as Vice President, an office he held until 1941. Garner, who was not one of FDR's key advisors, famously described the Vice-Presidency as being "not worth a bucket of warm piss."

Give Your Heart to the Hawks and Other Poems

Random House, New York 1933 - First trade edition. Corners and spine ends worn and a little frayed, a good only copy lacking the dustwrapper. However, Inscribed by the author to Mercedes de Acosta: "Inscribed for Mercedes de Heusta(sic) with so much pleasure in seeing you here. Faithfully, Robinson Jeffers. Tor House, Carmel, California. November, 1933." De Acosta was a writer and actress, and a flamboyant Cuban-born lesbian linked romantically to Greta Garbo, Isadora Duncan, Marlene Dietrich, and many others, and who apparently acted as something of a facilitator in artistic circles (late in her life she championed and promoted a young Andy Warhol).         Head Yankees Scout Paul Krichell, who signed Lou Gehrig ten years earlier, writes to a 25-year-old aspiring baseball scout - "If you will kindly write me next spring, letting us know the players' names and where they can be seen, we will be glad to send one of our scouts to look them over."

New York City, October 9, 1933. 8.5" x 11". "Typed Letter Signed "Paul Krichell" as Yankees scout, 1p, 8.5" x 11". Letter lists "Jacob Ruppert, President" and "E.G. Barrow, Secretary," both Hall of Famers. New York City, October 9, 1933. To William J. Hinchman, Philadelphia. Fine condition. In full, "Your letter of September 23rd to Mr. Barrow received and turned over to me to answer. The Yankees have five scouts and for this reason cannot take on any more at this time. Note what you say about the four young semi-pro players. If you will kindly write me next spring, letting us know the players' names and where they can be seen, we will be glad to send one of our scouts to look them over." William J. "Billy" Hinchman (1907-1940) was the son of former major leaguer William W. Hinchman (1883-1963), scout for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1921-1958 who discovered, among others, Hall of Famers Arky Vaughan and Lloyd Waner. Billy was killed in an automobile accident when he was 32. Paul Krichell (1882-1957) was Yankees Scout from 1921-1957. Krichell's talent evaluations and signings played a key role in building up the Yankees' run of success from the Murderers' Row teams of the 1920s to the 1950s teams led by Casey Stengel. He discovered and signed Lou Gehrig in 1923 while he was still playing baseball at Columbia University. Considered one of the greatest scouts in baseball history, Krichell signed over 200 players who later played professional baseball, including Hall of Famers Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Hank Greenberg, Phil Rizzuto, and Whitey Ford. His recommendation of Stengel as the Yankees manager was instrumental in Stengel's appointment in 1948. Pre-certified by PSA/DNAJSA Auction LOA"

ART EXHIBITION ON MOSCOW STREETS] Moskva 1 maia 1933 [i.e. Moscow on the 1st of May of 1933]

      - [Moscow]: Tsentr. pervomaiskaya khudozh, podkomissia Mossoveta, [1933]. 48 pp. 17,5x12,5 cm. In original constructivist-style wrappers. Very good, small tears of the spine, diagonal crease of the upper part of the back cover and a few pages. One of 3000 copies. First and only edition. Rare. This edition is dedicated to the profound and well-planned decoration of the city due to a big celebration of the May 1st of 1933 (the first year of the second five-year-plan, piatiletka). The book itself has a laconic geometrical yet catchy wrapper design. The book includes catalogue of all paintings which were presented outside on Gor'ky (Tverskaia), Petrovka, Stoleshnikov and Kuznetsky streets with artists' names, titles and exact places where paintings were installed. All paintings were dedicated to such subjects as geography of USSR, manufacturing and agriculture, military forces and Revolution, etc. The interesting part of the catalogue is a description of squares' decoration. There were 8 decorated squares with different themes. The Red Square decoration was constructed by Stenberg brothers, and the theme was «Long live May the 1st, the holiday of solidarity of the international proletariat!». The main elements of the decoration were two giant portraits of Lenin and Stalin on GUM building and a panel with Pervomai slogans on 4 languages. A monumental sculpture by Kuznetsov was installed on the Lobnoye Mesto. Okhotnyi riad was decorated with «architectural construction» designed by Gustav Klutsis (the theme was «Raise the Banner of Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin») which was installed on the facade of hotel «Moskva». The project was based on the poster by Klutsis on the same subject (printed by IZOGIZ). The idea was to show how closely Stalin's rule connected to revolutionary studies of Marx and Engels. There were 4 panels, on one of them there were depicted fortresses of old world and of new (Dneprostroi). All elements were lit. Decorating of parades and public events in early Soviet history could be considered an art form just like agitprop posters or art. Any information we can gather right now on the designs and the organization of these events is historically and culturally important. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
