      A fascinating, but somewhat depressing letter showing the dire financial straits in which Einsetin's ex-wife Mileva, and their two sons, found themselves in as the Nazi's came to power in Germany. Einstein had already moved to the United States with his new wife Else, but had returned to Europe in 1933 for a visit, during which time this letter was written. Einstein ends with his best wishes for their youngest son, Eduard ("Tetel"), who had been institutionalized in 1922 after developing schizophrenia. Sadly, Eduard's release from the institution to which Einstein refers was only temporary. ----------------------------------------- Liebe Milena! You never know what comes next! -------------------------------------------- Albert Einstein (1879-1955) had a turbulent private life. While studying at the ETH in Zurich, he fell in love with Mileva Mari (1875-1948), a fellow student who came from Serbia. She was one of the first women to study physics there. These first years of their relationship were warm and passionate. Mileva gave birth to their daughter, Lieserl, in 1902, yet because neither of them had a secure income at the time, they did not marry until a year later. All traces of Lieserl after the age of two seem to have been lost. There has been some speculation as to her fate - she may have been put up for adoption or she may have died at a young age. Albert and Mileva went on to have two sons, Hans Albert (1904-73) and Eduard (1910-65). During the years in which Einstein developed his early revolutionary theories, Mileva functioned as a sounding board for his ideas. Yet, there is no evidence that she participated in his scientific work. Apparently, Mileva never got over the loss of her daughter and increasingly suffered from depression. By around 1909 their relationship began to deteriorate. They became increasingly estranged and in 1912 Albert became involved with his cousin, Elsa Loewenthal. Upon Einstein's move to Berlin in 1914, he and Mileva separated. They were divorced in 1919, and soon afterwards he married Else, who had two daughters, Margot and Ilse, from a previous marriage. Albert's sons remained with Mileva in Zurich, yet he continued to be in contact with them. After the couple's separation, Mileva suffered a nervous breakdown in spring 1916 and spent six months in recovery in a sanatorium while a housekeeper and friends cared for the boys. The following year she complained of heart problems, and at other times she suffered from back and spinal pain, headaches, glandular swelling, the flu, a neck and jaw infection, and scrofula, a form of tuberculosis affecting the lymph nodes. She was born with a luxated hip that caused a lifelong limp. And she continued to suffer bouts of depression. Throughout her life as a mother, she also had the burden of being primary carer for Eduard, a frail and sensitive boy who was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of twenty when he was a medical student. Accounts from various contemporaries paint a picture of an embittered woman, though he relationship with Einstein achieved a kind of equilibrium of mutual respect. In 1922, Einstein gave Mileva the yield from his Nobel Prize money, in accordance with their divorce settlement, controlling but not keeping the principal. (By 1919 he had already been nominated for the Prize several times so it was assumed he would eventually receive the honour.) Mileva bought income property for herself and the boys - including a five-unit apartment house in Zurich - and Einstein also continued to pay the family's considerable medical bills. Einstein had not been entirely surprised when his son, "Tetel" ("little") was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He recognized that there was a genetic disposition, on the maternal side, toward mental illness; Mileva's sister, Zorka, also suffered from schizophrenia. "Tetel" had wanted to be a psychiatrist and was in medical school when afflicted with his first breakdown in 1930 - triggered, apparently, by an unhappy love affair with an older woman. By 1932 he was committed to "Burgholzli," the University of Zurich psychiatric hospital, and so began the pattern of institutionalization which would constitute the sad story of his life.  Einstein left Europe on December 14, 1932 with his secretary Helen Dukas and they arrived in Los Angeles on January 9, 1933. He remained in Pasadena until early March 1933, when he decided to return to Europe, despite warnings for his safety after Adolph Hitler came to power on January 30, 1933. In May, Albert visited Eduard at Burghölzli. Albert played his violin for his son but received no response at all. It was the last time they saw each other. Original cloth-backed boards, the boards decorated by the author in an elaborate desert design, incorporating all the major sights encountered on the journey, silhouetted against a black background, with the title in red, spine with black paper label, also titled in red; pp. [2], viii, 113, large wood-engraved illustrations throughout, blocked in many different colours, by various artists, a folding lithographed map, delineating the route in red, a multi-coloured lithographed "street map", seen from above, with shops ("We know a town better by its Buildings and Shops than by the Names of Its Streets"), 2 mounted photographic plates on gold paper (Queen Nefertiti) and on silver paper (The Sand Dunes East of Cairo), many other photographic illustrations of the British presence in and outside Cairo, and on the journey; light wear to binding, one small portion of front cover worn off, but very good internally, apart from one folding plate with small marginal loss and oxidation to silver and gold paper, as usual, resulting in one opposite blank page with repaired damage; publisher's ornate hieroglyphic bookplate to front pastedown; long authorial and signed presentation inscription, dated Abbassia, Cairo, 21st of December 1933 to Mrs Shakespear at the beginning. First edition, limited to 750 'standard' copies only, of an extraordinary book production documenting an eccentric reconnaissance across the Western Egyptian desert with armoured Rolls Royce cars. The book design is outstanding and several Egyptian artists from the School of Applied Art in Cairo were employed, alongside British designers. Siwa Oasis is one of the most interesting places in the Western Desert, as it is mostly populated by Berbers, and same sex marriages and homosexuality are traditionally accepted. 'Major Dun originally intended to write an account of the journey from Cairo to Siwa by the armoured cars of the 12th Lancers for the Journal of the Royal Medical Corps, but as the story grew under his hands and the necessity for illustrations quite beyond our scope became apparent he enlarged the article into a remarkable book, to be published entirely byEgyptian printers. Field-Marshal Sir Wllliam Birdwood has written a foreword and some idea of the character of the book can he obtained from a cursory glance throngh the prospectus which has just been issued. Many of the illustrations are magnificent and the most remarkable are those by N. Strekalowsky, who has also illuminated each page of the narrative. The author has designed the covers, and many other artists, as well as students of the School of Fine Art, Egypt, have contributed drawings. This book would make an unusual and most attractive present to any Mess. The book is divided into four parts. The first is a narrative of the journey from Cairo to Siwa and back; the second is a short history of the customs and superstitions of the Siwa Oasis and adjacent Libyan Desert. Then come photographic pages and lastly a' map drawn by Mr. J. H. Rowntree, supplementing the sketch map in the text. The armoured cars took the northern route across the Wadi Matrun desert to Burg el Arab, next marched to Mersa Matruh on the coast, then on to Sollum and south to Siwa across the desert and the sea of stones. The return journey was from Siwa direct to Mersa Matruh and then to Cairo by the route previously followed' (contemporary review in the Journal of the Royal Medical Corps).

Bondy pp. 154-5; Bromer & Edison p. 115-6. *First published in 1910, \i The Rose Garden of Omar Khayyam is a translation of the leading representative quatrains of the \i Rubaiyat made into an eclogue by Eben Francis Thomson, based on his 1906 translation of the complete work. The two larger versions in this set (both vi+28 pages, printed in red & black), measure 4.5 cm. x 3.5 cm. and 15 cm. x 12 cm. respectively. The tiny miniature, (oblong 4 mm. x 6 mm.) is housed within a small removable gilt card box with a circular perspex viewing lid. It was the result of a challenge from the author to Hamilton B. Wood of the Commonwealth Press, to produce the smallest book in the world - and was accepted as such at the time of publication and for many years afterwards. (Louis Bondy, \i Miniature Books , devotes a chapter to 'The smallest books in the world' which leads with a detailed description of this boxed set, and notes that some later items also described as being the 'smallest in the world' were in fact larger than the miniature \i Rose Garden ). According to Bromer & Edison, the miniature \i Rose Garden took seven years to complete. Zusammengehalten werden die Arbeiter, der Student, der Schwererziehbare und die Abiturienten von einem engagierten und zupackenden Meister. Selbst Curt, dem durch seinen Selbstdarstellungsdrang die Eingliederung ins Kollektiv besonders schwer fällt, bleibt am Ende von so viel Einsatz nicht unberührt. Il s'agit du deuxième volume de la collection du "Bahut des aromates" qui en compte quatorze. Le nom de cette collection fait référence aux coffrets exécutés par un ébéniste prévus pour recevoir les 6 séries de grands papiers. Il est à noter qu'il existe deux collections complètes sur Hollande, ne laissant que trois exemplaires séparés disponibles de ce texte rarissime qui fait suite au Voyage au bout de la nuit et qui ne lui est postérieur que de quelques mois.

First of this edition, number 32 of 50 copies printed on handmade paper and bound in niger morocco. A very attractive edition; according to master printer Vivian Ridler, The Haworth Press was founded by G. K. Pratt and type for some of the books was set up by hand, although most of the printing was done by Sherratt & Hughes of Manchester, as is the case here. One of the finest modern editions of the great Restoration poet.

First edition, in the secondary binding, bu to the nrown cloth more commonly found. Philby's account of his journeys across the so-called 'Empty Quarter', the desert region at the heart of the Arabian peninsular, has become a classic of the travel literature. Though not in fact the first to cross the Rub'al Khali - Bertram Thomas had beaten him to that in 1931 - Philby undertook the more arduous traverse and, in Wilfrid Thesiger's opinion, his should be regarded 'as the greater of the two'.

      Chatto & Windus, London, 1933. The first UK edition. 8vo. 480pp. Red cloth lettered in gold at spine and with the publisher's red top edge stain. Edges lightly spotted. A small area of discolouration to the base of the upper board, and a little fading to the cloth at the head and base of the backstrip where the dust wrapper is defective. A narrow strip of light partial browning to endpapers and a hint of very light spotting to one or two leaf margins. A small bump to the lower corner of the rear board impacts the corners of the last two or three leaves. A nice crisp copy in a somewhat distressed example of the uncommon Walter Goetz-designed dust wrapper, non-price-clipped but a little spotted, tanned at spine panel, chafed and with several short tears and half a dozen areas of edge loss, primarily to the spine ends and upper edge. This copy from the library of noted man of letters Bonamy Dobrée, with his inked signature to the front free endpaper, and also a tiny Poetry Bookshop plate to the base of the front pastedown. The author's seventh novel, a Southern Gothic classic, originally published in the US in 1932 in a print run of 11,000 copies, with this significantly more uncommon English edition appearing a year later in a print run of 2,500 copies.. 1st Edition.       Institut International de Coopération Intellectuelle 1933 - This is #281 of a limited printing of 3000 copies of Pourquoi la Guerre? (62 numbered pages), published by the Institut International de Coopération Intellectuelle in March, 1933. This is one of the french language copies of this first edition, which was published in French, English and German, of the 1932 correspondence between Albert Einstein (July) and Sigmund Freud (September) regarding the origins and nature of wars. Issued weeks after the ascension to power of the Nazi regime, with Hitler at its head, this was immediately banned in Germany, with almost all the German-language copies burned by the Nazis. The cover (app. 6.5" x 9") has sunning to its borders, shallow wear to the ends of the more notably sunned spine, and pencil notations to the top of the back cover. There are no deep tears or prominent stains. The lettering and art are unfaded and legible. The inside is very good, with no stamps or other attachments, no writing or notations. There are a few cracked gutters, but no loose and no missing pages. There is border sunning, which is mostly light, but no other notable stains. There are no page tears and few creases, none of which are significant. The above photos, of this copy, are accurate reflections its conditions. Inscribed in pencil on the front free endpaper 'For Cecil from Noël. 1933', further inscribed in pencil (first in Lynn Fontanne's hand) 'For Cecil - From Lynn -(then in Lunt's hand) Alfred Lunt', the word Lunt overwritten 'Otto', Lunt's character in the play, which premiered on Broadway in 1933, with Coward, Lunt, and Fontanne in the starring roles. The play was written with Lunt and Fontanne in mind, Coward having first met the couple in 1921, a long friendship ensuing. The possibility exists that the inscriptions are to Cecil Beaton, long time friend of all three, and designer of the sets and costumes for Coward's 'Quadrille'. He was in New York in 1933, vide a photograph of Beaton in fancy dress at the Opera Ball in April 1933. All three actors were also photographed often by Beaton. E. Wolfensberger, Zürich. 1912 Heirat mit Hanni Manz, 1918 Geburt der Tochter Gertrud, im selben Jahr Trennung. 1913 erneute Reise nach Paris, Auseinandersetzung mit Expressionismus und Kubismus. Nach Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs Rückkehr in die Schweiz. 1920 Reise nach Berlin, durch Empfehlung von Max Reinhardt Engagement als Bühnenbildner am Deutschen Theater (1920 Urfaust, Regie Max Reinhardt); eine Daueranstellung schlägt Baumberger aus. 1922 Hilfslehrer an der Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich. In der Folge breites Betätigungsfeld: intensive Plakatproduktion für verschiedene Kunden, Buchillustrationen, Briefmarken, Wandmalereien, Mitarbeiter beim Nebelspalter und am Zürcher Stadttheater, wo er unter anderem 1923 die Bühnenbilder für Hoffmanns Erzählungen von Jacques Offenbach sowie 1933 für Lohengrin von Richard Wagner baut. 1927 Heirat mit der Grafikerin Johanna Pulver, 1929 Geburt von Sohn Rudolf Caspar. 1929 erneute Reise nach Paris zusammen mit Oscar Lüthy und Walter Kern, Auseinandersetzung mit der abstrakten Malerei. Auf Anregung von Otto Salvisberg erhält Baumberger 1932 einen Lehrauftrag an der Architektur-Abteilung der ETH Zürich für das neue Fach Beziehung der Farbe zu Bau und Raum und wird 1947 zum ausserordentlichen Professor ernannt. Ab 1935 intensive Auseinandersetzung mit der Anthroposophie. Mitarbeit an der Schweizerischen Landesausstellung 1939 in Zürich: Wandbild mit Darstellungen aus der Schweizer Geschichte in der Abteilung Heimat und Volk sowie Bilder in der blauen Ehrenhalle. Ab 1943 neben grossen Erfolgen als Plakatgestalter vermehrt Auseinandersetzung mit christlichen Themen sowie der Weltliteratur (Faust, Divina Commedia, Don Quijote, Simplicius Simplicissimus, Ulenspiegel, Wilhelm Tell, Grimms Märchen) in Illustrationen und Malerei. 1949 Ausstellung zum 60. Geburtstag im Kunsthaus Zürich, die alle Sparten seines Schaffens vereint. 1959 Ausstellung in der Graphischen Sammlung der ETH. Im Alter von 72 Jahren stirbt Otto Baumberger in seinem Heim in Weiningen.Werkwürdigung:Die Wertschätzung, die dem Grafiker, vor allem dem Plakatgestalter, Otto Baumberger entgegengebracht wird, hat sein malerisches Schaffen in den Hintergrund gedrängt. In beiden Disziplinen lässt sich keine geradlinige Entwicklung feststellen; ein Nebeneinander von verschiedenen Stilen ist für Baumbergers Werk kennzeichnend. Dies hat die Literatur zum Teil als Problem, zum Teil aber auch als Ausdruck von grossem handwerklichen Können beurteilt. Zu Beginn seiner künstlerischen Arbeit ist Baumberger in erster Linie dem Expressionismus verpflichtet. In den grafischen Blättern mit gesellschaftskritischen Themen nähert er sich inhaltlich wie stilistisch George Grosz und Otto Dix an. Zusammen mit Fritz Pauli, Otto Morach, Hermann Huber und Ignaz Epper gehört Baumberger zu den wichtigsten Vertretern des Expressionismus in der Schweiz. Baumbergers Grafik und Plakate stehen ab 1910 hauptsächlich in der Tradition des Jugendstils, wie sie beispielsweise von Théophile Steinlen geprägt wurde. Dort war er vier Jahre lang Schüler der Professoren Kirchbach, Raupp, v. Hackl und Ritter v. Herterich. 1889 zog es in nach Frankfurt, jedoch kehrte er 1891 schon wieder nach München zurück. Dort hatte er zwei Jahre später seine erste Ausstellung mit Jagd-, Wildbildern und Landschaften des Allgäus [.]. Hoess’ Werke bezogen sich auf Landschaften und des darin lebenden Wildes (daher sein Spitzname ‚der Rehfidles-Maler‘). Die von ihm verwendete Technik war die Feder- und Steinzeichnung, die Radierung, das Aquarell, und die Ölmalerei. Zwischen 1900 und 1914 hatte er sich den Ruf als bester Jagdmaler erworben.
