        Light in August. A novel.

Chatto & Windus, London, 1933. The first UK edition. 8vo. 480pp. Red cloth lettered in gold at spine and with the publisher's red top edge stain. Edges lightly spotted. A small area of discolouration to the base of the upper board, and a little fading to the cloth at the head and base of the backstrip where the dust wrapper is defective. A narrow strip of light partial browning to endpapers and a hint of very light spotting to one or two leaf margins. A small bump to the lower corner of the rear board impacts the corners of the last two or three leaves. A nice crisp copy in a somewhat distressed example of the uncommon Walter Goetz-designed dust wrapper, non-price-clipped but a little spotted, tanned at spine panel, chafed and with several short tears and half a dozen areas of edge loss, primarily to the spine ends and upper edge. This copy from the library of noted man of letters Bonamy Dobrée, with his inked signature to the front free endpaper, and also a tiny Poetry Bookshop plate to the base of the front pastedown. The author's seventh novel, a Southern Gothic classic, originally published in the US in 1932 in a print run of 11,000 copies, with this significantly more uncommon English edition appearing a year later in a print run of 2,500 copies.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good/Fair.

        Design for Living.

1933 - First edition. 8vo., cloth. New York, Doubleday, Doran and Company. Inscribed in pencil on the front free endpaper 'For Cecil from Noël. 1933', further inscribed in pencil (first in Lynn Fontanne's hand) 'For Cecil - From Lynn -(then in Lunt's hand) Alfred Lunt', the word Lunt overwritten 'Otto', Lunt's character in the play, which premiered on Broadway in 1933, with Coward, Lunt, and Fontanne in the starring roles. The play was written with Lunt and Fontanne in mind, Coward having first met the couple in 1921, a long friendship ensuing. The possibility exists that the inscriptions are to Cecil Beaton, long time friend of all three, and designer of the sets and costumes for Coward's 'Quadrille'. He was in New York in 1933, vide a photograph of Beaton in fancy dress at the Opera Ball in April 1933. All three actors were also photographed often by Beaton. Spine faded, some browning and light foxing to the endpapers, a very good copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Pojecie prawdy w jezykach nauk dedukcyjnych. [The Concept of Truth in Formalized Language.]

Nakladem Towarzystwa Naukowego Warszawskiego z Zasilku Ministerstwa wyznan Religijnych i Oswiecenia Publicznego, Warszawa 1933 - First edition. In publisher's printed wrappers. VII, (1), (1)-116, (2) p. Scarce first edition of Tarski's monograph on the concept of truth in formalized languages. "In his classic monograph on the concept of truth [.], Tarski will present a method for constructing definitions of truth for classical quantificational formal languages. When one succeeds in applying this method to a particular formal language, the end result will be the construction of a predicate in a metalanguage for that language whose essential properties will be that it will be constructed out of non-suspicious mathematical vocabulary and that it will be intuitively satisfied precisely by the intuitively true sentences of the object language. At the same time, Tarski shows how, in terms of the defined notion of truth, one can give intuitively adequate definitions of the semantical notions of definability and denotation, and he indicates how it is possible to define the notion of truth in a structure in a way analogous to the one used to define truth. That allows him to conclude that the acceptability and rigor of the "recent methodological studies" (of Löwenheim, Skolem, Gödel and Tarski himself, among others), have been vindicated [.]." (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) Alfred Tarski (1901-1983) "widely considered as one of the greatest logicians of the twentieth century (often regarded as second only to Gödel), and thus as one of the greatest logicians of all time. Among philosophers he is especially known for his mathematical characterizations of the concepts of truth and logical consequence for sentences of classical formalized languages, and to a lesser extent for his mathematical characterization of the concept of a logical constant for expressions of those same languages." (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Panels sunned. Front panel with two stains. Otherwise clean. In fine condition. In publisher's printed wrappers [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

NUMBER 6 OF 100 SETS SIGNED BY WALL and with his etcher's slip indicating that he produced the book in Coral Gables, Florida. Weber, Following Bernhardt Wall 1872-1956, pages 42-43. Bernhardt Wall was born in Buffalo, New York on Dec. 30, 1872. He studied at the Buffalo Art Student's League then moved on to study in New York under Henry Reuterdahl and also apprenticed under William Auerbach-Levy. Wall began a career as a lithographic illustrator in 1889 working primarily as a commercial artist in New York and Buffalo. He soon became known as the "Postcard King" and designed over 5,000 comic cards. The year1915 marked a defining point in Wall's artistic career. Wall visited Colorado, Nevada and California making etchings of Indians, cowboys and major cities which were later published in a portfolio entitled, "Under Western Skies." These proved to be very successful and the artist shortly thereafter moved to California permanently. Wall continued to produce many fine etchings of the American West and by 1930 had also become a much respected historian of the region. Bernhardt Wall was unique in that he not only drew the etchings for his books, but he also printed and bound them. His books are in libraries and universities around the world including the British Museum, Library of Congress, the libraries of Harvard, Yale, Columbia, and Brown Universities. His works were also in the private collections of J. P. Morgan, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Henry C. Frick and Dr. N.C. Mathewson. Wall etched three sitting presidents of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, Warren Taft, and Henry Coolidge. Other prominent individuals etched by Wall include Sam Houston, Mark Twain, Thomas A. Edison, Abraham Lincoln, and Andrew Jackson. Artist and historian, Bernhardt Wall (1872-1956) was a pioneer etcher and producer of fine press books who treated a vast array of subjects, including Texas and the Southwest. Historians of fine press printing have compared him to William Blake. This collection of Wall's scrapbooks, publications, and correspondence was built by collector Natalie Williams of Marshall, Texas.

The Winding Stair and Other Poems

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1933. LIMITED FIRST EDITION. original dust jacket. Very Good/Very Good. FIRST EDITION OF YEATS'S COMPREHENSIVE AND ACCOMPLISHED COLLECTION THE WINDING STAIR AND OTHER POEMS , ONE OF ONLY 2000 COPIES PRINTED. "Yeats is now seen as one of a handful of Irish writers whose influence and example helped create twentieth-century modernist literature in the English language... His huge international reputation is securely based on the mystery and grandeur of his late verse and the poignancy of his love poetry, but he first came to fame as the exotically Celtic poet of a 'new' nationalist Ireland: almost single-handed, he made Irishness culturally fashionable. Spearheading a great cultural renaissance, he moved into his maturity as the voice of his country" (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography). "Much as he seeks in this long volume, bringing together 64 poems written in the late 1920s and early 1930s, images of order and serenity, he is still drawn to the wild, the dark and the passionate… On the one hand, Yeats is self-consciously inventing new traditions. The "Romantic Ireland" that he once associated with the old Fenian John O'Leary is now located firmly in Coole Park, the home of his friend Augusta Gregory, which is repeatedly used in the volume as the location of an imagined ascendancy…. But, on the other hand there is Crazy Jane, based on an old woman who lived in a cottage near Gort, through whom Yeats speaks in a series of seven poems. She is wild, earthy, reckless, fizzing with the energy of sex and defiance. She reminds Yeats and his readers that Ireland's greatest poet is not yet ready for the sanctity of an honoured grave" (Fintan O'Toole, The Irish Times). A slim signed limited volume The Winding Stair was issued in 1929, but this 1933 collection, The Winding Stair and Other Poems is regarded as a completely new book. Whereas the 1929 edition contained only six poems, the 1933 collection is Yeats's longest separate volume of verse, featuring 64 poems, including the masterpieces: "Dialogue Between Self and Soul", "Blood and the Moon," "Byzantium," the Coole Park poems, "Vacillation," and two separately titled long sequences ending with the exquisite lyric "From the 'Antigone.'" London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1933. Octavo, original blind-stamped green cloth with pictorial design by T. Sturge Moore on front board, original pictorial dust jacket; pages untrimmed (as issued). Housed in custom teal book box. Some foxing to edges of text block, cloth exceptionally clean. Dust jacket with abrasion to bottom right of front panel. A handsome copy of one of Yeats's most important works.

        Paris de Nuit.

Paris Édition Arts et Métiers Graphiques 1933 - First edition. 4to., text by Paul Morand, 60 gravure reproductions of Brassaï's photographs, photo-pictorial wrappers with a spiral binding, small ink ownership name to title-page, usual general age-toning to text, wrappers a little rubbed and mildly creased but overall a good example of a photographic classic. "Night does not show things, it suggests them. It disturbs and surprises us with its strangeness." (Brassaï). The photographer, Hungarian émigré Brassaï (1899 - 1984), claimed no more than observing while moving amid the built environment of Paris and its denizens after dark with his camera and tripod. In 1933 he compiled some of the photographs taken during the two years of these after-dark strolls in a book entitled Paris de nuit. Showing the nocturnal "City of Light" in saturated tones of black, grey, and neon white, the book established a new visual aesthetic in photography and was rightfully considered by John Szarkowski, the Director of Photography at MOMA, nothing less but "one of the most remarkable of all photographic books". Chemise with bookplate of renowned collector Richard Manney.Goblin Market (composed in April 1859 and published in 1862) is a narrative poem by Christina Rossetti. In a letter to her publisher, Rossetti claimed that the poem, which is interpreted frequently as having features of remarkably sexual imagery, was not meant for children. However, in public Rossetti often stated that the poem was intended for children, and went on to write many children's poems. When the poem appeared in her first volume of poetry, Goblin Market and Other Poems, it was illustrated by her brother, the Pre-Raphaelite artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Goblin Market is about two close young sisters, Laura and Lizzie, who hear the sounds of the goblin fruit market from their house where they reside by themselves. At first they try to ignore the enticing calls of the goblin men but eventually Laura decides to go out and see what's happening. Lizzie warns her not to, but Laura is too curious. The goblin men offer her their fruit, and Laura thinks it looks tasty. She doesn't have any money, but the goblins offer to take a piece of her golden hair instead. So Laura gives up some of her hair, gorges herself on goblin fruit, and heads on home to her sister. But after eating all that goblin fruit, Laura starts to waste away. Lizzie gets worried and decides to go down to the market to see what's what. The goblin men try to tempt her the way they tempted Laura, but Lizzie stands firm. The goblin men turn violent and try to stuff fruit in Lizzie's mouth, but she squeezes her mouth shut, so they just end up getting juice all over her. Lizzie runs back to their house all covered in goblin fruit juice. Laura kisses the juice off her sister's cheeks and is miraculously, but painfully, healed.Years later, Laura and Lizzie are both wives and mothers, and they describe their experience in the goblin market to their own children as a cautionary tale about the importance of sisterly love.Latimore and Haskell, p 69; Riall, p. 179.
