Goblin Market

London: George G. Harrap & Co., 1933. - The Copy of Poet Percy MacKayeWith an Original Drawing by Rackham[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. ROSSETTI, Christina. Goblin Market. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. London: George G. Harrap & Co., Ltd. [1933]. First trade edition, with a fine, three-quarter page original pen & ink drawing by Rackham inscribed to Mr. & Mrs. Percy MacKaye and dated Christmas 1937. The drawing depicts Mr. Rackham himself as an anthropomorphic tree. Octavo (8 3/4 x 5 1/2 in; 222 x 136 mm). 42, [4] pp. Four color plates. Original stiff-card wrappers in color. Original dust jacket with just a tiny amount of insect damage at foot of spine and flap-folds. A near fine copy.American dramatist and poet Percy MacKaye (1875-1956), whose poetry collection, The Far Familiar (1938) was graced with a frontispiece by Arthur Rackham, was the first champion of civic theater and is considered to be the first poet of the Atomic Era because of his sonnet "The Atomic Law," which was published in the Christmas 1945 issue of The Churchman.Goblin Market (composed in April 1859 and published in 1862) is a narrative poem by Christina Rossetti. In a letter to her publisher, Rossetti claimed that the poem, which is interpreted frequently as having features of remarkably sexual imagery, was not meant for children. However, in public Rossetti often stated that the poem was intended for children, and went on to write many children's poems. When the poem appeared in her first volume of poetry, Goblin Market and Other Poems, it was illustrated by her brother, the Pre-Raphaelite artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Goblin Market is about two close young sisters, Laura and Lizzie, who hear the sounds of the goblin fruit market from their house where they reside by themselves. At first they try to ignore the enticing calls of the goblin men but eventually Laura decides to go out and see what's happening. Lizzie warns her not to, but Laura is too curious. The goblin men offer her their fruit, and Laura thinks it looks tasty. She doesn't have any money, but the goblins offer to take a piece of her golden hair instead. So Laura gives up some of her hair, gorges herself on goblin fruit, and heads on home to her sister. But after eating all that goblin fruit, Laura starts to waste away. Lizzie gets worried and decides to go down to the market to see what's what. The goblin men try to tempt her the way they tempted Laura, but Lizzie stands firm. The goblin men turn violent and try to stuff fruit in Lizzie's mouth, but she squeezes her mouth shut, so they just end up getting juice all over her. Lizzie runs back to their house all covered in goblin fruit juice. Laura kisses the juice off her sister's cheeks and is miraculously, but painfully, healed.Years later, Laura and Lizzie are both wives and mothers, and they describe their experience in the goblin market to their own children as a cautionary tale about the importance of sisterly love.Riall, p. 179. Latimore and Haskell, p. 69.

Marlborough: His Life and Times, full set of six U.S. first editions

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1933. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1933. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Winston Churchill's monumental biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough took years of research. The final volume was published on the eve of the Second World War. Richard Langworth says "To understand the Churchill of the Second World War, the majestic blending of his commanding English with historical precedent, one has to read Marlborough." The British first edition was issued in four volumes. The U.S. publisher chose to split the first two volumes into two books each, resulting in a six volume set that is otherwise identical in content to the British. Here is a superlative, truly fine set of the first U.S. edition. All six are first edition, first printings, with the Scribner's "A" on the copyright page. The green cloth bindings - so prone to toning and wear - are here nearly perfect. The bindings are uniformly clean, tight, and square with bright spine gilt, sharp corners, and virtually no wear. Even volume V - which was bound in slightly different cloth that proved highly susceptible to spine toning - is remarkably bright. The contents are likewise superlative - crisp, clean, bright, and tight. No spotting. No inscriptions. No age toning. Even the top edges are uniformly bright and clean. The books appear unread. This is the cleanest unjacketed set we have offered and is superior in condition to many jacketed sets we have seen. All six books are protected in removable, clear mylar covers. Thoughts and Adventures

London: Thornton Butterworth, Ltd., 1933. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. A collection of 23 engaging essays by Churchill on an incredibly wide variety of subjects published in 1932. From the original front flap blurb: "Whether he is dealing with personal reminiscences, or telling us his views on any subject under the sun, Mr. Churchill stamps the page with his own vivid personality." Thornton Butterworth published the first edition in 1932. Less than a year later, Thornton Butterworth issued the "Keystone Library" edition from first edition plates. There were ultimately several different Keystone Library printings and multiple binding states. Here is a fine copy of the first Keystone Library issue, first printing, first binding state in an excellent original dust jacket. The scarce and striking dust jacket is complete with no losses. Light wear at the extremities and hinges, toning of the spine, and three small moisture stains are the only flaws to the dust jacket. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. The dark green cloth binding remains bright, tight, and square with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. First binding state is confirmed by the dark green dotted-line grain cloth and blind-stamped title on the front cover (see Cohen, p.390). The contents are bright and crisp. No inscriptions. The book appears unread. Slight transfer toning on the endpapers corresponding with the dust jacket flaps confirms that this book has spent its life jacketed. Spotting is confined to the half title page, the title page, and the text block edges. There is a tiny bookseller sticker affixed to the bottom left corner of the rear pastedown. Belle Martell (1894-1972) was boxingís first woman referee. In 1931, Belle and her husband, boxing promoter Art Martell, took over former heavyweight boxing champion James J. Jeffries' red dairy barn in Burbank, which Jeffries had converted to a boxing gym. On April 30, 1940, she passed the California state exam, becoming the first woman to be licensed to referee amateur boxing matches throughout the state. Martell made her debut as a referee on May 9, 1940. Wearing a shirtdress below her knees and a silk scarf around her neck, she refereed eight bouts in Pasadena, where a crowd of 700 watched Johnny Mongz knock out Jimmy Archuleta. On May 24,1940, all five state boxing commissioners drew up and adopted Rule 256, which read: "No license will be granted to members of the female sex to referee, second or manage in the ring when other performers are of the opposite sex.î

        The Child Manuela

New York: Farrar & Rinehart,, 1933. New York: Farrar & Rinehart,, 1933. The Novel of "Maedchen in Uniform". Translated from the German by Agnes Neill Scott. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine and upper board in black, top edge dyed red. With the dust jacket. Cloth just a little rubbed and faded at extremities, spine faded. An excellent copy in the lightly rubbed jacket with some light marks and spots and toned spine panel. First English language edition, first printing. The Child Manuela, based on its author's experiences at the strict boarding school Kaiserin-Augusta-Stift in Potsdam, was originally published in German in 1934. Dealing frankly with the subject of homosexuality among teenage girls, it was also made into a hit play and an important film, the first to depict lesbianism positively (though the story was originally conceived as a novel, the play and film appeared in 1930 and 31, before the novel was published). A very nice copy of this important book.

[Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Eigenh. Brief und eh. Briefkarte mit U.

Paris, 19. X. 1933 bzw. o. O. u. D.. 3½ SS. auf gefalt. Doppelblatt (Brief) sowie 2 SS. (Briefkarte). 8vo und qu.-12mo. Mit eh. adr. Kuvert..

        Thoughts and Adventures

London: Thornton Butterworth, Ltd., 1933.

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited,, 1933. London: Macmillan and Co., Limited,, 1933. Octavo. Original green cloth, black morocco label to spine. With the dust jacket. Spine rolled. An excellent, fresh copy in the rubbed jacket with some nicks, small chips, and short splits. First edition, first impression. I fear you will not find it possible to look so kindly on it as you did my last, but I am still your most devoted, most enthusiastic admirer, John Collier". Collier was a fixture on the English literary scene during the 1920s and 30s, counting among his friends the Sitwells, E. M. Forster, and Wyndham Lewis. Tom's A-Cold, taking its title from Shakespeare's King Lear, was his third novel, set in a post-apocalyptic future in which society has reverted to a medieval way of life.
