ALICE IN WONDERLAND (Fine Copy in Near Fine Dust Jacket

London: John Shaw, 1933. "Carroll, Lewis." ALICE IN WONDERLAND. London: John Shaw, [n d. but 1933). Illustrations by D. R. Sexton. 4to. First Edition. A Fine copy of this large and impressive Alice book, remarkably fresh and unrubbed, in a NEAR FINE priced (3 shillings) dust jacket. The book (red cloth spine, bright onlay illustration, blank lower board) is lightly foxed at the edges by the color plates and line drawings are all present and in terrific condition. There is a book-prize bookplate on the front paste-down dated 1934. The bold and beautifully illustrated dust jacket has some edge-wear, a half-crown-sized piece of the rear flap is missing (visually, very minor loss), and the DJ has had archival tape repair to the inside, invisible from the outside. We're not quite sure why this Shaw/Sexton edition is not more celebrated. It cuts an impressive appearance, and the artwork is outstanding. A better copy than this example would be hard to find.. First Edition. Decorative Boards. Fine/Near Fine. Illus. by D. R. Sexton. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

Marlborough: His Life and Times, full set of four British first edition, first printings in dust jackets

London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., 1933. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is superior full set of four British first edition, first printings in first printing dust jackets. Winston Churchill's monumental biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, was initially conceived a full 40 years before publication of the fourth and final volume. Churchill originally considered the idea of the biography in 1898, returning to it in earnest in 1928. Marlborough ultimately took 10 years of research and writing and is the most substantial published work of Churchill's "wilderness years" in the 1930s. The final volume was published on the eve of the Second World War in 1938. Richard Langworth says "To understand the Churchill of the Second World War, the majestic blending of his commanding English with historical precedent, one has to read Marlborough." The work was very well received, both critically and aesthetically. The first edition is a physically impressive production. The books measure 9.25 x 6.25 inches and are roughly 2 inches thick. Each is bound in plum cloth with beveled edges, the Marlborough coat of arms gilt on the front cover, and a gilt top edge. Moreover, each volume is profusely illustrated. Unfortunately, the plum cloth binding in Volumes I-III proved highly susceptible to sun fading. (A different, more fade-resistant dye was used in Volume IV.) Without the dust jackets, Volumes I-III are nearly always spine faded and jacketed first editions are now scarce. Particularly scarce are first printing dust jackets for Volumes I & II. We caution collectors to be wary of price-clipped dust jackets, as later impression Volume I & II dust jackets state either "2nd Impression" or "3rd Impression" printed next to the price on the lower front flap. No such problem applies to Volumes III & IV, which each had only a single printing.  Additionally, the dust jackets themselves proved highly susceptible to soiling and toning. This full, four-volume British first edition set is collector-worthy and increasingly scarce thus, near fine or better first printing volumes in near fine, unclipped, first printing dust jackets. The bindings are square, clean, bright, and tight. The contents are uniformly bright and crisp. All four volumes feel unread. Remarkably for the edition, the only trivial spotting we find in the set is confined to the Volume II fore edge. The gilt top edges remain bright and the fore edges show only mild age-toning. The sole previous ownership mark is a 1935 Christmas gift inscription on the Volume II front free endpaper. The dust jackets are highly complete with superior shelf presentation. Notably, the Volume I dust jacket retains excellent gray color on the spine with only minor toning, which we seldom see. All four dust jackets show only trivial loss at the spine heads and minor wear to extremities, with a little wrinkling of the Volume I spine, a hint of toning to the spines, and modest soiling to the Volume III front panel. All four dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A97.2(I-IV).a, Woods/ICS A40(aa); Langworth p.166.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND (Superb Copy of the 1933 English Film Photoplay Version in Original Dust Jacket,)

London & Glasgow: Collins, 1933. Carroll, Lewis (Charles L[utwidge] Dodgson). ALICE IN WONDERLAND. London & Glasgow: Collins, (n. d. but 1933). First U. K. Photoplay edition (9" by 7") issued in tandem with the 1933 Paramount film adaptation starring Charlotte Henry as Alice and co-starring Cary Grant, W. C. Fields, and Gary Cooper among others. This is a Very Good example, designed with wonderful Art Deco elements to it, with very little wear to the fragile oatmeal-buckram cloth covers as well as the spine, small previous owner's signature in ink, there are eight b&w full-page still photos from the film along with numerous charming line drawings oof the Alice characters by Irene Mountfort. The Very Good ORIGINAL DUST JACKET partially incorporates photographic images from the film including that of Charlotte Henry with the Dodo. The DJ is flap-clipped but not price-clipped. Perhaps best of all, the dust jacket is 100% complete although there is some soil and a long closed tear to the white back panel, and overall edge-wear in general. Despite faults, the exceedingly rare DJ shows very well indeed. . First Thus. Decorative Cloth. Very Good/Very Good. Illus. by Irene Mountfort.

The Cantos of Ezra Pound. Some Testimonies by Ernest Hemingway, Ford Madox Ford, T. S. Eliot, Hugh Walpole, Archibald MacLeish, James Joyce and others.

New York: Farrar & Rinehart, [1933] - Octavo pp. 22; original printed wrappers, stapled as issued. Even toning to periphery of wrappers, small loss from head of front panel, wrappers and text detached, yet a very good, clean copy of this fragile pamphlet. This slim and ephemeral publication, "for gratis distribution" (Gallup), was issued in connection with the first American edition of A Draft of XXX Cantos (Farrar & Rinehart, 1933). Ford Madox Ford was the guiding light behind this little pamphlet: "Ford wrote to John Farrar of Farrar & Rinehart. that he wanted to assemble a tribute to Pound from several writers. Farrar agreed, and soon Ford was receiving testimonials from many of Pound's old friends" (J. J. Wilhelm, Ezra Pound: The Tragic Years 1925-1972, 1994, p.64). The other contributors are Edmund Wilson, William Carlos Williams, Allen Tate, Elizabeth Madox Roberts, Francesco Monotti, Paul Morand, H.D., John Peale Bishop, and Basil Bunting. A fine set.?"The text of the present edition is a careful reprint of Wynkyn de Worde?'s folio of 1498, from the unique copy in the John Rylands Library, Manchester. That edition has never been reprinted and will be of interest to students of Malory as bridging the gap between Caxton?'s original edition of 1485, which has been accurately reproduced by Sommer, and Wynkyn de Worde?'s second edition of 1529, on which most modern editions are based. The book is of particular interest as containing 21 half-page woodcuts, described by Sommer as an example of the first attempt ever made of illustrating a text throughout with engravings. The complete series is reproduced in the present edition for the first time?" (Prospectus). This exceptionally and beautifully produced edition was published in two volumes that were case bound in either full or half red Hermitage calf, the material developed by book binder Douglas Cockerell. Cockerell marbled papers were used for the half-calf bindings.Ransom, Selective Check Lists, p. 18, no. 77.

The Hardy Boys #12: Footprints Under the Window

Grosset and Dunlap, New York 1933 - The first edition, second printing (Carpentieri 1933B-2), with all appropriate issue points for book and dustjacket--the only difference between this and the first printing is the addition of this title to the list of Hardy Boys books at the end of the text. The dustjacket is the first issue. The book bright and tight. It shows a degree of spine slant, some superficial water marks to the blue topstain (none of them remotely bleeding), a neat gift inscription to the verso of the front endpaper ("from / Henry Strecker"), and just a couple of smudges of soiling to the text. The dustjacket shows light general wear and soiling, and a little fading along the edge of the front panel. The red shield on the spine is quite faded as usual. This exhaustive description should be summed up by saying, this is still an excellent copy. Very good in like dustjacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
