MEN, WOMEN AND RATTLESNAKES

William Godwin, Inc., New York 1933 - Octavo, pp. [i-iv] v-vii [viii] 1-248, original greenish-gray cloth, front and spine stamped in black, fore-edge untrimmed. While not a horror novel per se, Collier's first novel is a bizarre, grotesque account of small-town life, calling it strange book is an understatement. Written in carefully crafted, matter-of-fact prose, Collier's novel is account of everyday life in the isolated rural community of Menham. The primary occupations of the farmers and their wives are drinking and having illicit sex. The chapter titles themselves highlight the book's lurid content, such as "A Man's Best Friend is His Whiskey Glass," "A Secret Sexual Pleasure," "Arthur Moore Improves on Beating One's Wife," and "Alice's Secret for Fondling." The book is oddly humorous at times, and to be sure, some of the narrative situations are about as sophisticated as a typical shaggy dog story. Other aspects of the book however, are genuinely jarring in the context of Collier's relaxed prose style and overall light-touch. Helen Hummer, a middle-aged virgin spinster who hates men, adopts a male infant from an orphanage, names him Henrietta, and raises him as a girl, beating him so severely that the child grows into an idiot youth whose only friend is a tree. Arthur Moore, a farmer who sees women as nothing more than "living latrines," raises a brood of rattlesnakes in secret and dispatches them to kill neighbors whom he finds offensive. Collier's characters are definitely comedic rustics, but much of the book's dry humor is rooted in cruelty and rampant misogyny. As one might imagine, when Helen Hummer finally runs afoul of Arthur Moore, the resulting climax scene is straight out of a Jim Thompson novel. This is a novel that does not fit exactly into the horror genre or a straight noir (or it seems any other), it reads like a gonzo cross between television's Twin Peaks and Anderson's WINESBERG, OHIO. Top of page edges a bit dusty, a fine copy in a very good dust jacket with shelf wear to the spine ends with some shallow chipping, wear to the front corner tips, closed 15 mm tear to rear panel on a 19 mm diagonal to lower spine panel, several brown stains to the verso of front panel with some light bleed through to front panel. An obscure and uncommon book, more so in jacket. (20784) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Marlborough. His Life and Times.

London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd,, 1933–8. 4 volumes, octavo. Original purple cloth over lightly bevelled boards, gilt-lettered spines, Marlborough crest gilt to front boards, top edges gilt. Portrait frontispiece to each volume, 99 additional plates, 14 facsimiles of letters, and 182 maps and plans, several folding. Spines faded, occasional foxing to contents; a very good copy of a publication prone to fading. First editions, first impressions, trade issue, inscribed by the author in vol. IV on the front free endpaper, "To Craigavon, from Winston Churchill. August 1938". The recipient was James Craig, 1st Viscount Craigavon (1871–1940), and the first Prime Minister of Northern Ireland. Churchill was grateful for the Ulster loyalist support he received in his wilderness year of 1938. For Christmas in 1938 (the same year as this book was inscribed), Craigavon presented Churchill with a silver cup "engraved with speeches on Ulster by his father, himself, and his son Randolph" (Loughlin, p. 92). "Marlborough: his Life and Times took its place at once among the classics of historical writing. As the story of his ancestor's leadership of a grand alliance to prevent the domination of the continent by a single power, it was also a source of inspiration to Churchill in his campaign against appeasement" (ODNB). Ironically, in the latter half of 1938 when the three "Treaty" ports of Cobh, Berehaven, Lough Swilly were given up against Churchill's wishes, "partly in a vain attempt to convince Hitler that peaceful negotiation and conciliation was the best path … although the Unionist government did protest against the deal on the Irish ports, their protest was a qualified one. Lord Craigavon, in the end, professed a willingness to be 'bribed' by government contracts for Belfast firms. Some observers believed that Craigavon in essence supported the policy of appeasement. The low-key betrayal by a friend brings home the full extent of Churchill's powerlessness in 1938" (Bew, Churchill and Ireland).

        The Camberwell Miracle.

London: William Heinemann, 1933 - Octavo. Original purple cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the pictorial dust jacket. Spine rolled, darkened and worn at foot, small smudges to front board, foxing to edges of text block. A very good copy in a first issue jacket from another copy with a few short closed-tears which are tape-repaired on the verso. First edition, first impression. The dedication copy, inscribed by the author below the printed dedication "and I may very well add, in gratitude for all the trouble he took to prevent me from making too great a fool of myself in the writing of this book, from his old pal, J. D. Beresford. 19a, Eaton Place, Brighton, 6th November. 1933." Beresford's inscription reflects one facet of his character mentioned by ODNB: "He was intensely self-conscious, a quality he believed hampered his writing". H. H. Bashford (1880-1961) was Honorary Physician to George VI and best known as a writer of satirical novels, particularly Augustus Carp, Esq., By Himself: Being the Autobiography of a Really Good Man (1924), described by Anthony Burgess as "one of the great comic novels of the twentieth century".

On me laisse trop seul avec lui. J'attends [.]». Peintre, graveur et illustrateur symboliste. Il fut également poète, critique d'art et essayiste. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century

Battle Creek, Michigan: The Kellogg Company, 1933. Original wraps. Very Good +. Dick Calkins. A sharp, very clean copy of the 1933 prototype of this title, which went on to spawn many sequels and reprints over the years. This, in its original incarnation, was published in its stapled pictorial wrappers by Kellogg's of Battle Creek, Michigan and was an important past of their early ad campaign appealing to children. Solid and well-preserved, with no writing or markings of any kind internally and with the wonderful accompanying illustrations by Dick Calkins in vivid color. A bit of very light wear along the spine and just a touch of light creasing to the rear panel's lower-edge. Still though, this copy firmly merits a VG+ to Near Fine. Octavo, a charming tale of Buck Rogers, "the only man alive whose normal spine of life has been spread over a period of five centuries!"

        Martin Buber

June 15, 1933. The letter reads in full: <I>"Dear Ms. Bergel: As I learned in the meantime, the question of the educational authority will not be decided until the 25th. Although the hostilities against my person have become highly repulsive recently (e.g. participants of the meeting of the government representative assembly on the 11th were told...that I was a member of the association deciding (illegible) school reform - which I had vigorously fought against! - and therefore my assignment would have an unpopular effect in government circles), I am still not giving up in this matter, but would like to inform myself in detail about the status of matters, which is supposed to happen the day after tomorrow, before making a decision regarding a trip to Berlin. Then I will be able to let you know - by then I probably will have heard from you too. Incidentally, unlike the last time, I will be unable to travel at my own expense this time. Best wishes, Yours, Buber"</I>

The Autobiography of Alice B Toklas

New York: Harcourt Brace, 1933. First edition. Near Fine book in Very Good+ jacket. Original blue publisher's cloth binding, with silver embossing to spine and front cover. Small bump to foot of spine; darkening to the top edges of text block. Text block tight, and internally unmarked and bright. Collates complete, including frontispiece and 15 plates. Some fading to jacket with some creasing to front panel; chip to top left corner near spine not affecting title or text; small closed tear to upper rear panel; minor soiling to rear. A very nice copy of this important work in Stein's modernist oeuvre. Considered one of Stein's most accessible works, The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas experiments with the memoir genre by depicting Stein's artist contemporaries through the point-of-view of her life partner Alice (Winterson). Criticized by Ernest Hemingway and Henri Matisse, The Autobiography nevertheless was a commercial success in its own time and is now considered an important work of modernism. It additionally broke new ground, openly representing a long-term same-sex relationship between two women and giving readers an intimate look into both their private home and their infamous artistic salon.         Thurmond-Holmes Lynching: Real-photo postcard, titled "San Jose, Calif. Nov. 26 - 1933 11:25 P.M."

[N.p.] 1933 - 1 vols. 3-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches. Photo of California's Last Lynching, 1933. On Nov 9, 1933, 22-year old Brooke Hart was kidnapped and held for $40,000 ransom. A massive manhunt led to Thomas Harold Thurmond. After six hours of interrogation, Thurmond confessed and named his accomplice, John M. Holmes. They both admitted murdering Brooke and dropping his body into the San Francisco Bay. On the evening of the 26th, a lynch mob broke into the Santa Clara County Jail and dragged Holmes and Thurmond to the St. James Park where 3000 onlookers from San Jose and the surrounding area, chanted "string them up." Governor 'sunny Jim" Rolf refused to call out the National Guard to protect the kidnappers, and referred to the lynching as a "lesson." "Thurmond was hung from the limb of a venerable mulberry tree, and, the limb of a great elm a few feet away served as Holmes' gallows a second or two later." - 'History of San Jose' by Clyde Arbuckle. Souvenir hunters so damaged the trees that they had to be cut down, and not a trace remains of them. This lynching was the last to take place in California, and was the basis for John Steinbeck's short story, "The Lonesome Vigilante."The photograph depicts the the three limbs of the tree rising from the trunk at center, and the hanging corpses of the two lynched men, Thurmond at left, partly clothed, above a small group of onlookers; Holmes (unclothed) at right. AN EXTRAORDINARY DOCUMENT OF AMERICAN SOCIAL HISTORY.

        Looking Forward

John Day 1933 - One of ten deluxe copies only, prepared for presentation by the publisher and FDR. The publisher, in addition to the first trade edition, published a deluxe edition in a different format of 100 copies only, all numbered. Copies 11 through 100 were for sale. Copies 1 through 10 were not for sale. This is copy 10, one of the first 10 copies explicitly (according to the colophon page) not for sale. Differs from the first trade edition in many ways, including gold gilt on top edge and beveled boards. Also, strangely, the deluxe edition is a smaller format than the trade edition, although it has all the same content. Housed in a custom-made collector slipcase. Needless to say, deluxe one of ten copies of significant books by US Presidents are very uncommon. This is an early title by FDR, articles and speeches before he became President, and published just when he started his first term. Issued without a dust jacket. We have seen only one other copy of this presentation edition, and it was inscribed by FDR. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
