A Natural History of Japanese Birds (=Nippon no Chorui to Sono Seitai), in 2 volumes (1933-1934-1941), complete

Tokyo: Azusa Shobo, 1933-1941. First edition.. A bright and clean copy in near fine condition in the original lightly browned and rubbed slipcases.. Pp. xviii, (1), 1-524; xxi, 1-1080, (1), errata sheet laid in at rear; 3 large folding maps (1 in color), 16 fine color plates (after water-color paintings), 41 full page black-and-white plates, 196 text-figures. Publisher's original highly decorated blue cloth, lettered in silver on the spine with ten red panel lines, front cover lettered in red and with ten red vertical bands and elaborate gilt decorations in the center, in the original thick cardboard slipcases lettered in black on the front cover of each case, sm 4to (10 1/4 inches x 7 1/2 inches). The rare first edition of this monumental work on the birds of Japan emphasizing the Palearctic species. As this book was published at the beginning of WWII, few copies of the second volume, issued in 1941, were ever shipped out of Japan. The text is in Japanese with Latin names of birds used throughout. From the research library of ornithologist Oliver L. Austin (past Director of the Austin Ornithological Research Center in Wellfleet, Massachusetts and past Curator of Ornithology at the Florida Museum of Natural History), with his rectangular Japanese/English name-stamp seal on the front endpaper of each volume; the second volume is warmly inscribed by the Yoshimaro Yamashina to O. L. Austin on the front endpaper. An interesting association copy of a rare Asian ornithological work. See also Ripley, p. 318 and Trinity College, p. 263.

Chelsea: Ashendene Press, 1933. ONE OF 250 PAPER COPIES for sale, of a total of 290 (and 20 on vellum) n. Hardcover. mm (). 2 p.l., iv, 163 pp. Translation by J. Amyot, edited and corrected by Pierre-Louis Courier. ONE OF 250 PAPER COPIES for sale, of a total of 290 (and 20 on vellum). In the original peacock green paper boards with vellum spine and tips, circular gold stamping on front cover by Gwendolen Raverat. In the (just slightly soiled and rubbed) original patterned paper slipcase. With 29 charming woodcuts by Raverat, four of them full-page. Front pastedown with morocco bookplate of C. R. and J. E. Ashbee. Marginal notes printed in red, initials and paragraph marks in blue added by hand by Graily Hewitt. Hornby 39; Franklin, pp. 173-87, 242-43. Half a dozen tiny chips missing where the paper covering the boards meets the vellum spine, otherwise AN ESPECIALLY FINE COPY, entirely clean, fresh, and bright inside and out. For this penultimate publication of the Ashendene Press, Hornby used the quaint French translation by Aymot of this pastoral novel of awakening love written in Greek in the second or third century. Franklin says that Raverat's wood engravings are "the only worthwhile original illustrations in an Ashendene book." Our copy was once owned by C. R. Ashbee, the founder of the Essex House Press.

Pueblo Indian Pottery. with introduction and notes by Kenneth M. Chapman Curator of Indian Arts Fund and the Laboratory of Anthropology Santa Fé (New Mexico)

      C. Szwedzicki, Nice, France 1933 - Titles and first pages of introductions printed in red and black, half-titles, parallel text in English and French. 50 photo-lithographic plates, coloured by hand, each with original tissue guards intact. Text stitched and plates unbound as issued, contained within original publisher's cloth portfolio, upper cover with mounted plate, ties (slight wear to extremities) Limited edition of 750 copies signed by the publisher. A rare part set of Chapman's survey of Pueblo Indian pottery, an art which was an integral part of a 'native culture, unique among the patterns of the American Indian, [which] had its inception, and had reached its maturity, in the heart of the great southwestern area of the United States' (Introduction) This work is much scarcer than the same publisher's portfolio of Sioux Indian paintings which was issued several years later. The fifty beautiful plates depict specimens of Pueblo pottery selected from the collection of over nineteen hundred pots in the Indian Arts Fund in Santa Fé, New Mexico. The text gives a general introduction to the ceramic art of the Pueblo Indians of the southwestern United States, then concentrates on an overview of the pottery produced in the pueblos of Taos and Picuris, San Juan, Santa Clara, San Ildefonso, Tesuque, Cochiti, Santa Domingo and Santa Ana. This is followed by descriptions of the specific examples of the pottery shown in the plates. Szwedzicki also produced portfolios of Kiowa Indian art and Pueblo art, all published in the south of France in the 1930s. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

My dear Catholic friend: peccatur intra et extra muros – the Croatians have no able leader, the Serbians either, as you say. About the King I have no opinion, how able he is. I think, the Serbians are good soldiers, but they lack in administrative skillfulness; the Croatians are a bit conceited, that they have a higher culture than their Serbian brethren; and unhappily they had from the beginning no leaders. Radic was, poor fellow, shortsighted physically & mentally; not seeing sharply the contours of men & kings he was mentally unclear & phantastic [.]" (Br. v. 22. Juni 1933; auf Briefpapier mit gepr. A Fine copy of this large and impressive Alice book, remarkably fresh and unrubbed, in a NEAR FINE priced (3 shillings) dust jacket. The book (red cloth spine, bright onlay illustration, blank lower board) is lightly foxed at the edges by the color plates and line drawings are all present and in terrific condition. There is a book-prize bookplate on the front paste-down dated 1934.         Marlborough: His Life and Times, full set of four British first edition, first printings in dust jackets

London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., 1933. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is superior full set of four British first edition, first printings in first printing dust jackets. Winston Churchill's monumental biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, was initially conceived a full 40 years before publication of the fourth and final volume. Churchill originally considered the idea of the biography in 1898, returning to it in earnest in 1928. Marlborough ultimately took 10 years of research and writing and is the most substantial published work of Churchill's "wilderness years" in the 1930s. The final volume was published on the eve of the Second World War in 1938. Richard Langworth says "To understand the Churchill of the Second World War, the majestic blending of his commanding English with historical precedent, one has to read Marlborough." The work was very well received, both critically and aesthetically. The first edition is a physically impressive production. The books measure 9.25 x 6.25 inches and are roughly 2 inches thick. Each is bound in plum cloth with beveled edges, the Marlborough coat of arms gilt on the front cover, and a gilt top edge. Moreover, each volume is profusely illustrated. Unfortunately, the plum cloth binding in Volumes I-III proved highly susceptible to sun fading. (A different, more fade-resistant dye was used in Volume IV.) Without the dust jackets, Volumes I-III are nearly always spine faded and jacketed first editions are now scarce. Particularly scarce are first printing dust jackets for Volumes I & II. We caution collectors to be wary of price-clipped dust jackets, as later impression Volume I & II dust jackets state either "2nd Impression" or "3rd Impression" printed next to the price on the lower front flap. No such problem applies to Volumes III & IV, which each had only a single printing.  Additionally, the dust jackets themselves proved highly susceptible to soiling and toning. This full, four-volume British first edition set is collector-worthy and increasingly scarce thus, near fine or better first printing volumes in near fine, unclipped, first printing dust jackets. The bindings are square, clean, bright, and tight. The contents are uniformly bright and crisp. All four volumes feel unread. Remarkably for the edition, the only trivial spotting we find in the set is confined to the Volume II fore edge. The gilt top edges remain bright and the fore edges show only mild age-toning. The sole previous ownership mark is a 1935 Christmas gift inscription on the Volume II front free endpaper. The dust jackets are highly complete with superior shelf presentation. Notably, the Volume I dust jacket retains excellent gray color on the spine with only minor toning, which we seldom see. All four dust jackets show only trivial loss at the spine heads and minor wear to extremities, with a little wrinkling of the Volume I spine, a hint of toning to the spines, and modest soiling to the Volume III front panel. All four dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A97.2(I-IV).a, Woods/ICS A40(aa); Langworth p.166.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND (Superb Copy of the 1933 English Film Photoplay Version in Original Dust Jacket,)

London & Glasgow: Collins, 1933. Carroll, Lewis (Charles L[utwidge] Dodgson). ALICE IN WONDERLAND. London & Glasgow: Collins, (n. d. but 1933). First U. K. Photoplay edition (9" by 7") issued in tandem with the 1933 Paramount film adaptation starring Charlotte Henry as Alice and co-starring Cary Grant, W. C. Fields, and Gary Cooper among others. This is a Very Good example, designed with wonderful Art Deco elements to it, with very little wear to the fragile oatmeal-buckram cloth covers as well as the spine, small previous owner's signature in ink, there are eight b&w full-page still photos from the film along with numerous charming line drawings oof the Alice characters by Irene Mountfort. The Very Good ORIGINAL DUST JACKET partially incorporates photographic images from the film including that of Charlotte Henry with the Dodo. The DJ is flap-clipped but not price-clipped. Perhaps best of all, the dust jacket is 100% complete although there is some soil and a long closed tear to the white back panel, and overall edge-wear in general. Despite faults, the exceedingly rare DJ shows very well indeed. . First Thus. Decorative Cloth. Very Good/Very Good. Illus. by Irene Mountfort.

The Cantos of Ezra Pound. Some Testimonies by Ernest Hemingway, Ford Madox Ford, T. S. Eliot, Hugh Walpole, Archibald MacLeish, James Joyce and others.

New York: Farrar & Rinehart, [1933] - Octavo pp. 22; original printed wrappers, stapled as issued. Even toning to periphery of wrappers, small loss from head of front panel, wrappers and text detached, yet a very good, clean copy of this fragile pamphlet. First edition, first printing, scarce: Copac records only 2 copies in British and Irish institutional libraries (Cambridge, Durham). This slim and ephemeral publication, "for gratis distribution" (Gallup), was issued in connection with the first American edition of A Draft of XXX Cantos (Farrar & Rinehart, 1933). Ford Madox Ford was the guiding light behind this little pamphlet: "Ford wrote to John Farrar of Farrar & Rinehart. that he wanted to assemble a tribute to Pound from several writers. Farrar agreed, and soon Ford was receiving testimonials from many of Pound's old friends" (J. J. Wilhelm, Ezra Pound: The Tragic Years 1925-1972, 1994, p.64). The other contributors are Edmund Wilson, William Carlos Williams, Allen Tate, Elizabeth Madox Roberts, Francesco Monotti, Paul Morand, H.D., John Peale Bishop, and Basil Bunting. Gallup A31c note; Gallup, Eliot, B21; Grissom, Hemingway, B16; Slocum & Cahoon, Joyce, B16.
