        Looking Forward...

New York: John Day Co. 1933. EXTREMELY RARE ADVANCE REVIEW COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, ONE OF 130 RECALLED ADVANCE COPIES, with manuscript corrections by the publisher on pages 36, 158 and 269 and canceled leaf 141/142. The publisher (John Day) bound 130 advance copies in wrappers and sent them out to reviewers on March 10, 1933. One copy was received at the White House and several significant errors were discovered. The publisher acquiesced to the President and sent telegrams to each of the reviewers recalling the books. Only about 10 were not sent back. The remaining 120, as here, were re-issued with manuscript deletions and an inserted leaf.?Published in March 1933, and rapidly proceeding to four printings before the end of the month, [Looking Forward] consisted of a compilation of articles and speeches which Roosevelt had given before taking office as President. Together they amounted to a political philosophy which Roosevelt wished to offer to the American public at the start of his administration. It offered hope for the future and affirmed the central role of government in improving the quality of ordinary people's lives. Through government, he argued, the socio-economic system could be rebuilt to ensure that a great depression would never again blight the life of the nation"In Looking Forward [Roosevelt] remained an American nationalist fervently believing in the nation's exceptional qualities: 'America is new. It is in the process of change and development. It has the great potentialities of youth?? (Bennett, Roosevelt?s Peacetime Administrations).New York: John Day Co., 1933. Octavo, original paper wrappers; custom box. Spine cracked, but holding; page 141, the cancelled leaf, detached (as often) - it may never have been properly bound; small tear to corner of rear wrapper. RARE. Very Good....

The American Bar Guide, Eat, Drink and be Merry But be Temperate in All Things

N.p.: N.p., 1933. Octavo, [6], 83, [3] pages. Styled second edition, per the title page, which states that the First Edition was published in 1885. We're holding out judgment on this, as we continue to see no evidence that the first existed. Published at the end of Prohibition, the author states that "The art of mixing drinks has been lost, as it were, and the man of today will, without the use of a proper guide, experience difficulty in preparing a drink that at one time was much sought after by those who were patrons of the best hotels and clubs throughout the country". Green cloth binding with brown lettering on the front, a small vignette of a mint julep glass in white and brown, yellow endpapers and text pages, advertisements by The Libbey Glass Manufacturing Co. at both the front and rear, two advertisements by the author's company (R.C. Miller & Son, Oakland, California), one on the verso of the title page for "Pop-pi-ya Wine" and one on page 70 for "Calax" ("For Health - Eat [Fruit]"), Table of Contents at the rear followed by several blank pages headed "Memorandum of New Recipes". Pagination: (i-vi), 1-83, 3 pp. of ads. Overall in near fine condition, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, straight corners with a minimum of rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; a bit of rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and a small amount of very light soiling to the boards, else fine. We are aware of a very few copies of this work in private collections, but none in institutional collections. Rare. [OCLC locates no copies, either of this printing, or of the supposed first edition of 1885; not in Noling, Beverage Literature].

        AIZ.Das Illustrierte Volksblatt

1933. HEARTFIELD, John. AIZ. Das Illustrierte Volksblatt. Volume X11 No. 42. With photomontage by John Heartfield. Folio, loose as issued. Berlin: Neuer Deutscher Verlag, 1933. |~||~||~||~||~| From 1930 to 1938 Heartfield provided photomontages that were published in the Arbeiter-Illustrierte Zeitung. Many of these astonishing images are masterpieces of the art of caricature, and resulted in Heartfield having to flee for his life. This issue has the photomontage depicting three winged soldiers in gas masks and with the captions "Hitler tells fairy tales. The Third reich is a pacifist reich. Her soldiers aren't really soldiers, they are angels of Hitler's eternal peace, only their wings are camouflaged". A fine copy. David Evans. John Heartfield AIZ pp.164-165

Les Amours Pastorales de Daphnis & Chloe

Chelsea: Ashendene Press, 1933. Translated by J. Amyot, edited and corrected by Paul-Louis Courier. 29 wood engravings by Gwen Raverat. One of 290 copies on Batchelor handmade paper, there were 20 copies printed on vellum. Initials hand drawn in blue by Graily Hewitt and his assistants. Printed in Ptolemy type with marginal notes in red. 4to., original vellum backed green paper covered boards with stamp designed by Raverat in gilt on upper cover, in the original patterned paper covered slipcase (worn at extremities), uncut. Very slight darkening to edge of boards, otherwise extremely good. The edition on paper was Hornby's second attempt at this work, the first being printed on Japanese vellum. Due to the ink's very slow drying on the Japanese paper, the sheets were packed before they were ready, leading to very bad offset on most of them. Hornby declared that he destroyed all except 10 copies of this edition. At the second attempt he abandoned the Japanese paper in favour of the easier Batchelor paper used here. A very good copy a handsomely illustrated Ashendene. It is a complete departure from the previous books and a triumph, forming a fitting end to the Press, this being the last work, apart from the bibliography, to be printed there.

Paris: Librairie Rene Colas, 1933. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Near Fine. Two volumes (COMPLETE) bound in one. [viii] pp., 1412 cols., colonne 1412 (numeraz. continuata), 70 pp. (Table methodique) + iv pp. (Index to the Table). Bouond for Martin Breslauer in contemporary German maroon half calf over maroon cloth, all original wrappers bound in (spine sunned and faded to chestnut brown), internally FINE. Beautiful Copy of the First Edition, limited to 1000 numbered copies (this one being No. 849). The still-indispensable, virtually comprehensive repertoire for the understanding and study of the Costume from antiquity to the 20th-century, including civil, military, and religious costume, clothing and fashion. While the work is principally European in scope, there is significant coverage given to other parts of the world. Approximately 3,121 work are meticulously described, with full collations and plate counts. The work is arranged alphabetically according to author (or if anonymous by title). So extensive is the work that there is even an Index to the Index (sic!). That this massive work was created by the heroic efforts of a single individual is amazing. -- Our copy was bound for Martin Breslauer, of Berlin, who was at that time justly considered to one of the greatest European booksellers. Breslauer was ruined by Nazi tax-collectors and was forced to flee with his family to London, where as the result of a Nazi bombing campaign he died of shock. -- REFERENCE: Besterman, p. 1505.

THE NOBLE & JOYOUS BOKE ENTYTLED LE MORTE DARTHUR

Oxford: Shakespeare Head Press, 1933. No. 171 OF 350 COPIES FOR SALE (of a total edition of 370) n. Hardcover. With the Illustrations Hand Colored. 264 x 191 mm (10 3/8 x 7 1/2"). Two volumes. No. 171 OF 350 COPIES FOR SALE (of a total edition of 370). Publisher's terra cotta half morocco over ivory buckram, flat spines with gilt titling, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed. WITH 22 WOODCUTS reproduced from Wynkyn de Worde's folio edition of 1498, all hand colored. Printed in red and black in Caslon type. Ransom, p. 18. AN UNUSUALLY FINE COPY inside and out--entirely fresh, bright, and clean. This is an attractive hand-colored copy of the Shakespeare Head edition of the most famous of the Arthurian tales, reprinted from, and resembling in its layout and typeface, the 1498 edition of Wynkyn de Worde. Written in the 15th century by Thomas Malory (ca. 1405-71), the sweeping "Mort d'Arthur" (an English version, despite the title, of earlier chivalric tales in French) includes the youth of Arthur, the romance of Guinevere and Launcelot, the quest for the Grail, and the tragedy of Tristan and Iseult. PMM says that the text is nothing less than "the matter of England." And Malory's "style, the humor, the magnificence, that magic that takes away the breath, combine [here] in a masterpiece of legendary narrative." The printers used photographs of the only surviving copy of the 1498 edition, held by the John Rylands Library, to set the text here. The woodcuts, accurately described in the colophon as "crude but vigorous," come from the same source. The result is a work directly tied to the early days of printing in England, but with the broad margins, wonderful paper, and impeccably set type typical of Shakespeare Head volumes. Carefully and intelligently done by the previous owner, the coloring here is naïve, in keeping with the style of the woodcuts.

The rare first edition of this monumental work on the birds of Japan emphasizing the Palearctic species. As this book was published at the beginning of WWII, few copies of the second volume, issued in 1941, were ever shipped out of Japan. The text is in Japanese with Latin names of birds used throughout. From the research library of ornithologist Oliver L. Austin (past Director of the Austin Ornithological Research Center in Wellfleet, Massachusetts and past Curator of Ornithology at the Florida Museum of Natural History), with his rectangular Japanese/English name-stamp seal on the front endpaper of each volume; the second volume is warmly inscribed by the Yoshimaro Yamashina to O. L. Austin on the front endpaper. An interesting association copy of a rare Asian ornithological work. See also Ripley, p. 318 and Trinity College, p. 263.         Pueblo Indian Pottery. with introduction and notes by Kenneth M. Chapman Curator of Indian Arts Fund and the Laboratory of Anthropology Santa Fé (New Mexico)

      C. Szwedzicki, Nice, France 1933 - Titles and first pages of introductions printed in red and black, half-titles, parallel text in English and French. 50 photo-lithographic plates, coloured by hand, each with original tissue guards intact. Text stitched and plates unbound as issued, contained within original publisher's cloth portfolio, upper cover with mounted plate, ties (slight wear to extremities) Limited edition of 750 copies signed by the publisher. A rare part set of Chapman's survey of Pueblo Indian pottery, an art which was an integral part of a 'native culture, unique among the patterns of the American Indian, [which] had its inception, and had reached its maturity, in the heart of the great southwestern area of the United States' (Introduction) This work is much scarcer than the same publisher's portfolio of Sioux Indian paintings which was issued several years later. The fifty beautiful plates depict specimens of Pueblo pottery selected from the collection of over nineteen hundred pots in the Indian Arts Fund in Santa Fé, New Mexico. The text gives a general introduction to the ceramic art of the Pueblo Indians of the southwestern United States, then concentrates on an overview of the pottery produced in the pueblos of Taos and Picuris, San Juan, Santa Clara, San Ildefonso, Tesuque, Cochiti, Santa Domingo and Santa Ana. This is followed by descriptions of the specific examples of the pottery shown in the plates. Szwedzicki also produced portfolios of Kiowa Indian art and Pueblo art, all published in the south of France in the 1930s. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

ALICE IN WONDERLAND (Fine Copy in Near Fine Dust Jacket

London: John Shaw, 1933. "Carroll, Lewis." ALICE IN WONDERLAND. London: John Shaw, [n d. but 1933). Illustrations by D. R. Sexton. 4to. First Edition. A Fine copy of this large and impressive Alice book, remarkably fresh and unrubbed, in a NEAR FINE priced (3 shillings) dust jacket. The book (red cloth spine, bright onlay illustration, blank lower board) is lightly foxed at the edges by the color plates and line drawings are all present and in terrific condition. There is a book-prize bookplate on the front paste-down dated 1934. The bold and beautifully illustrated dust jacket has some edge-wear, a half-crown-sized piece of the rear flap is missing (visually, very minor loss), and the DJ has had archival tape repair to the inside, invisible from the outside. We're not quite sure why this Shaw/Sexton edition is not more celebrated. It cuts an impressive appearance, and the artwork is outstanding. A better copy than this example would be hard to find.. First Edition. Decorative Boards. Fine/Near Fine. Illus. by D. R. Sexton. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
