This is one of ten "special copies" reserved by the publisher from the total edition, presented in a specially commissioned luxury binding and including a delightful full-page original pen-and-ink and watercolour drawing by Rackham (signed "Arthur Rackham"), showing one of the goblins shouldering a basket of fruit in the company of a rodent and a large-billed bird. Describing his artistic method for these "specials", Rackham pointed out that "my little sketches must inevitably be of a light hearted or joking nature... They have to be spontaneous and free handed. The nature of the paper is such that there can be no preparatory drawing and no alterations". Riall comments that "From The King of the Golden River [1932], Harrap issued nine or ten copies, seven being for sale, of a special issue of the first limitation numbers of the limited edition" (A New Bibliography of Arthur Rackham, 1994, p. xvi).

46 eigenh. Briefe und 77 eh. Brief- und (Bild)Postkarten mit U. bzw. Paraphe sowie 6 Telegramme von und 92 Schriftstücke an Lili Marberg. Verschiedene Orte, ca. 1933 bis 1962.

1933. Zusammen 273 SS. von und 103 Bll. an L. M. Verschiedene Formate. Beiliegend 77 Bll. Bürgermeistern u. a.

Autograph letter signed. Moscow, 14. IX. 1933.

1933. 4to. 3½ pp. on 2 ff. With autogr. envelope. In Russian, to his third wife, Natalja, on a day he and Ivan Vassilyevitch Kljun spent together attending an exhibition of the Red Workers' and Peasants' Army and visiting officials. Kljun urged him to have his hair cut, as Malevich resembled a "savage". They failed to meet Lobanov, who wanted a landscape. "[...] You cannot imagine my sentiments. What else should I do, and how wait? I am completely starved, and although I have eaten quite well these two days at Ivan Vassilyevitch's, there is no way I might be satiated, and after all, I cannot live at his place, and there is nowhere for me to go. I still have no money to go to Nemchinovka and stay there overnight [...] It's simply a nightmare when the thought turns up that something might happen to me, a severe mental illness might afflict me. Tomorrow I will try to see mother, maybe I can raise some money there [...]". Also, Malevich mentions his difficult relationship with his brother, and that he avoids seeing him: "That's what it amounts to, when a man has not a penny, they all start to lecture you and call you a fool [...] Yes, this is hard indeed for me; when people find out that you have to money, they change their ways entirely. [...]" (transl.).

September 1933. Motorboote legen an Dampfer an ...

The Novels and Plays of Saki. Complete in One Volume

The Viking Press, New York 1933 - Stated "Second 'Omnibus' Volume." Rebound in blue half morocco gilt and papercovered boards, probably soon after publication. Spine expertly preserved, otherwise a nice near fine copy. This copy bears two identical examples of the armorial bookplate of Thomas Ruggles Pynchon (on both the pastedown and front fly), and was purchased by us some years back from a scout who purchased it at a tag sale at the author's parents' home. Presumably the bookplate was that of the author's father, also named Thomas Ruggles Pynchon. One could speculate at length about the effect of the spooky, fantastic tales of Saki on the young Pynchon, and indeed you are free to do so. We won't, but we are not above selling the book based on those conjectures. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Hamburg, Diepenbroick-Grüter & Schulz, 1933.. Octavo. Pp. (vi), plus 16 plates. Professionally rebound copy. Each leaf and plate is expertly mounted on archival card and the entirety is bound in neat red full cloth. The original pictorial covers laid down on both sides. Last two plates are reproduced in fine colour facsimile and bound in the same way. Excellent copy in a very good condition. ~ First edition. Extremely rare. Of this first edition we were able to locate a single institutional copy in Germany, that in the library of Topographie des Terrors. OCLC locates one more institutional holding worldwide, that in Harvard Library. The beautiful plates depict numerous variations of Hitlerjugend uniforms for various age groups. Illustrations of ranks, insignia, flags, guidons and standards, as well of gear and personal accouterment are also present. The fine plates are not lithographed but produced from several metal plates, a laborious and delicate process. At the end of the 19th century the term “chromotypograph”, implying colour printed from raised metal, as type is, was used for colour prints which made use of metal relief blocks. It is indeed the process used in this book; the colour plates were printed from etched metal blocks, a relief method rather than planographic.

Fast Workers (Original dialogue notes for the 1933 film)

N.p., N.p. 1933 - Original dialogue notes for the 1933 Tod Browning film, "Fast Workers." Handwritten notes on two pages of legal-size notebook paper in holograph pencil, presumed to belong to one of the screenwriters for the film. The notes are as follows, with several lines marked through in various places:[First page]Spike: What'd you do to her, when you found her?Bucker: Down the hall, through the lobby; onto the sidewalk.Alabam: Wasn't you pretty sick in your soul when you saw she was faithless?Pinky: Yeah; he was broken hearted all that day, but he met a [illegible] that night and skies were blue again.[Second page]Bucker: You guys sure had me going last night, but it's all right now.Gunner: It's okay now?Bucker: But I sure spoiled that poor kid's evening.(as Gunner stares) that is, until she told me how you guys got her off the train at Atlantic City just to take them pictures for a joke.Gunner: You see, we didn't know you were married.Bucker: Yeah, it wasn't all my fault. One of Browning's lesser known films, about two friends, Gunner and Bucker, who work as riveters. Bucker often has the urge to marry, and Gunner will hit on Bucker's girl to see if her intentions are true. One night, while Gunner is in indisposed, Bucker meets a tough woman named Mary, who he falls for, but she only wants his money, and Bucker doesn't know that Mary knows Gunner.Loose legal-size notebook paper, 8 x 12.5 inches. The original "Wesco Tablet" wrapper is present but the sheets have detached, all sheets presumed present. The first page is foxed about halfway to the bottom edge, where the notations are; the second page has a large chip at the lower third, with the chipped piece present. Very Good overall.

Hop-o'-my-thumb went up to the Ogre softly and pulled off his seven-league boots

1933. Hop-O-'My Thumb"RACKHAM, Arthur, artist. "Hop-o'-my-thumb went up to the Ogre softly and pulled off his seven-league boots" [Sussex]. 1933. Original pen-and-ink and watercolor drawing, signed "A Rackham" on lower left-hand corner, for the color plate facing page 28 in the The Arthur Rackham Fairy Book. London: George G. Harrap & Co., Ltd. [1933]. Image size: 9 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches: 241 x 172 mm. (board size: 10 3/16 x 8 3/8 inches: 259 x 212 mm.). Matted, framed and glazed. "Seven-league boots are very tiresome to the person who wears them; so the Ogre now began to think of resting, and happened to sit down on the very rock where the poor children were hid. As he was so tired, and it was a very hot day, he fell asleep, and soon began to snore so loudly that the little fellows were terrified. When Hop-o'-my-thumb saw this he said to his brothers, "Courage, my lads! Never fear! You have nothing to do but to steal away and get home while the Ogre is fast asleep, and leave me to shift for myself." The brothers now were very glad to do whatever he told them, and so they soon came to their father's house. In the meantime Hop-o'my-thumb went up to the Ogre softly, pulled off his seven-league boots very gently, and put them on his own legs: for though the boots were very large, yet, being fairy boots, they could make make themselves small enough to fit any leg they pleased." This illustration was also used on the front panel of the dust jacket on the first trade edition. This is an exceptional watercolor encapsulating everything that Rackham is known for. Here we have an Ogre - wearing a red and white striped bandana on his head with pointed ears, a very long pointed nose and sharp teeth. He is sleeping with a grin on his face, totally oblivious as to what tiny Hop-o'-my-thumb is doing. One of his Seven-league boots is already off his left foot, lying on the ground and Hop-o'-my-thumb is trying to pull the enormous right boot off the Ogre. The Ogre is lying between the roots of an giant tree within a forest of trees and there are little white flowers on the ground around him. In the foreground are six pixie-like children running away from the Ogre, just as Hop-o'-my-thumb told them to do. A truly masterful watercolor, with Rackham using his art to create a time capsule and epitomizing his skill in bringing a moment in time to life.Seven-league boots are an element in European folklore. The boot allows the person wearing them to take strides of seven leagues per step, resulting in great speed. The boots are often presented by a magical character to the protagonist to aid in the completion of a significant task. Mention of the legendary boots are found in: Charles Perrault's Hop o My Thumb (France) and also Jack the Giant Killer (England).

Maria Chapdelaine. Illustrations de Clarence Gagnon.

Paris: Editions Mornay, 1933.
