        Paris De Nuit.

Arts et Métiers Graphiques,, Paris: 1933 - Brassai's acclaimed masterpiece, "Paris de Nuit" published by Arts et Métiers Graphiques, Paris in 1933. Writing in "The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century," Andrew Roth wrote ".with 62 rich full-page photogravures capturing his unforgettable "social fantastic" vision of Paris, "Paris de Nuit" combines the luxe and the louche. Its graphic design is sophisticated and its photogravure reproductions so rich that the sooty blacks still look like they'll rub off the page. Paul Morand, novelist, diplomat, and, later, persona non grata for his collaboration with the Vichy government, gets the cover's most prominent credit for his essay here, but Brassaï's photos are the book's real meat. Brassaï became a master at drawing luminosity from the darkness. [This work has] lost none of its dark glamour or film noir grit". "The book created a sensation when it was published; many pictures from the series were deemed too risqué and were not exhibited or published for decades, until the 1976 sequel, "The Secret Paris of the 1930s." The first book set [Brassaï] on a lucrative and prolific career" (McDarrah, 55). Measuring approximately 10 x 8 inches, the book is wire spiral bound in photographically illustrated fragile wrappers. The condition of the book is very good with a corner creased on the back and slightly rubbed corner tips to the covers and some internal corners near the spiral wire. There is no foxing or signs of previous ownership. Overall, this is a highly desirable copy of a notoriously fragile masterpiece that is rarely found in this condition.         The Mask of Fu Manchu -by Sax Rohmer -a Signed Copy

New York, NY: N.Y. / New York: A L Burt, 1932 (actually Likely 1933 or 1934 ). 1st Burt Edition, First Printing , 1933. -----------hardcover, a solid Good copy, yellow cloth with black lettering on front board and black lettering and design on spine, some soiling to the yellow boards, age toning to the spine, short tear along the spine but still very much attached and intact, in an attractive Good dustjacket with some chips and tears, tape repair on rear panel, tape reinforcement on front and verso of jacket at tips and folds, some sunning to the spine, looks really quite nice overall as the jacket retains the cover art used on the 1st edition, signed and inscribed "To John with love from Sax:, Rohmer seemed to sign a lot of material using the word love, as well this has been signed with the letter S in SAX having the two vertical lines through it so it looks like a dollar sign, if you're going to have a signed Sax Rohmer in your collection you have to want it to be a FU MANCHU story, quite rare signed, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo.         Testament Of Youth (With a Signed Letter From Shirley Williams )

The First UK Printing published by Gollancz in 1933. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. The correct first issue with orange boards and black titling to the spine. Some sunning to the spine. Slight dustiness and spotting to the text-block. Small neat previous owner's name to upper front blank end-paper. Light spotting to prelims with light toning to the page edges. Mild vertical crease to front blank end paper. A tight copy. NO Wrapper. Accompanied by a typed letter on 'House of Commons' headed paper (dated 24th 1976) and flat signed 'Shirley Williams'. Shirley Williams ( Now Baroness Williams) is the daughter of Vera Brittain. In the latter Shirley Williams discusses reasons for her mother's 'eclipse' and her thinking about the reprinting of 'Testament of Youth': '.and I assure you that I will certainly do what I can to try to keep my mother's work alive.'. Clearly back in 1976 , 'Testament of Youth' was out of print! A major WW1 title and highly collectible. Ashtonrarebooks welcomes direct contact.
