Dessins et Peintures d'Asie, exécutés au cours de l'Expédition Citroën -Centre Asie- 3ème Mission G.-M. Haardt - L. Audouin-Dubreuil.

"This book is limited to two hundred and twenty-five, twenty-five of which are printed on Japanese Vellum. The bookplate of Harry MacNeill Bland, to whom the book is inscribed, is also on the pastedown.         A supplement to Elwes' monograph of the genus Lilium. Parts I to IX.

Dulau & Co. Ltd. / The Royal Horticultural Society. London. 1933-1940; 1960. - NINE PARTS, 30 handcolored lithographed plates and 10 color collotype plates (TOTAL OF 40 plates), accompanying text sheets, decorative paper wrappers, large folio approximately 22 x 15 inches (56 x 38 cm). Parts I to VII: Plates in very good to fine condition with occasional very minor faults at edges (bump to corner, light creasing, tiny edge tear). Wrappers have wear to spines, occasional light wear to edges, 1 x 1 inch lightly discolored area at lower left corner of front wrappers from removal of label. Parts VIII and IX: plates in very good to fine condition (first plate in last volume is loose); slight wear and soiling to wrappers, discolored area at lower left corner of front wrappers from removal of label. This important botanical monograph, the Supplement to Henry Elwes 1880 Monograph of the Genus Lilium highlights the extraordinary wealth of China and surrounding countries in the species Lilium. As Elwes' friend and collaborator Arthur Grove states in the introduction to the Supplement: "When Elwes prepared his Monograph about fifty species of Lilium were known to exist, and it was then the general opinion among experts that few remained to be discovered. With his customary acumen, Elwes himself expressed the view that 'The only regions from which much novelty can be expected are the Eastern Himalayas and the immense tract of unexplored and difficult mountain country which surrounds our Indian Empire on the north and east, and which lies round the head-waters of the Irrawaddy, the Bramputra, and the Yang-tse-kiang. --- The Corean peninsula may also produce some new species of Lily; but though the flora of that country is absolutely unknown to us, it may be expected that any indigenous plants of great beauty or horticultural value have already found their way into the gardens of Japan.' These words were written in 1880, some years before the botanical exploration of Western China began, and Elwes proved a wiser prophet than he knew. At that time, however, no one in England suspected that the area indicated by him was soon to prove richer in lilies than either Japan or Western North America." The first 7 parts of the Supplement were issued between 1933 and 1940. These were limited to 250 copies with 30 handcolored plates drawn and lithographed by Miss Lilian Snelling. The large folio size is used to great advantage to showcase the stunning flowers, with botanical details to the side. Each plate is accompanied by a descriptive text of 2 to 4 pages, including the habitat of the plant. More than half of these 30 plates feature plants from China, with all but 3 of the 30 from countries in Asia. This Supplement merits a place in Sitwell and Blunt's Great Flower Books, where it is noted: "A work of the greatest interest and value to all Lily growers. The Supplement is considerably finer both in text and illustration than the original monograph." (p.94). In 1960 and 1962 a further two parts were sponsored by the Royal Horticultural Society, containing "the new lilies introduced since 1933 by Kingdon Ward and other collectors. The text is by Dr. W.B. Turrill, F.R.S, lately Keeper of the Herbarium at Kew.The illustrations are by Miss Margaret Stones, another great botanical artist, who is following worthily in the steps of Miss Snelling." (from the introduction by F.C. Stern). In part VIII are five beautiful color plates of lilies, two of which are from North America - Lilium rubescens (southern Oregon, California) and Lilium Michiganense (Canada and Mid west USA),plus two of Asian origin (Yunnan and Manipur). In part IX, four of the flowers depicted are from North America - Lilium washingtonianum var. purpurascens (north-western California and Oregon); Lilium pitkinense (California); Lilium Pardalinum var. giganteum (Northern California); Lilium kelleyanum variant (California); the last is from the Himalayas.         The Wind in the Willows

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1933. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. Shepard, E. H. . Kenneth Grahame (1859-1932) was an English writer; this is probably his most famous novel, a classic of children literature. It concerns the escapades of four animal friends who live along a river in the English countryside - Toad, Mole, Rat, and Badger. This is a children's story that is as much for adults as children. It was originally published in 1908 and again in 1913. The sale item shows 1933 on the title page as well as the copyright page and is probably the first American edition. Blue cloth binding with gold lettering on spine and three gold cartoons on front board. Binding tight but slightly cocked, with bumping at top and bottom of spine plus a bit of sunning on the spine. Surprisingly there is no foxing anywhere. Bright yellow end pages with illustration of the Willows neighborhood. Only flaw is the dedication to the previous owner on front free end page. Unclipped dust jacket ($1.00) is sunned on spine, chipped at top and bottom of spine, and worn at all extremities but there are no tears. This volume is in very good shape for the age. 12 mo (6.75 to 7.75 inches). 312 pages. Now Brodart covered to prevent further deterioration.

In 1939 Lewis wrote to the wife of his friend John Rothenstein, explaining that: "my wife and I were most orthodoxly spliced a long time ago?I have found myself rather overshadowed by [her]?and she has been forced a little into the fray ? we have no children. She is blonde, she tends to put on fat, her mother was German, her father a good British farmer?she has ridden all over the Atlas on a mule and is a great reader of my books; but you can see she is a wife in a thousand."         Three Publicity Stills from the Set of the 1933 Film Laughter in Hell

Universal 1933 - Hollywood: [NP] 1933. Photographer unknown. Three original 8" x 10" black-and-white publicity photos taken on the Universal City set of the 1933 chain-gang drama film Laughter in Hell. Blue paper hand-typed descriptions mounted on verso of each photo; apparently for newspaper write-ups. Very Good overall. A few pieces of masking tape on verso, a few stains and some fairly light edge wear.Photo #1 (going from left to right in main product photo) shows Jim Tully, Irish-American ex-hobo-and-pugilist author of the book on which the film was based, hanging with star Pat O'Brien, known at the time as "Hollywood's Irishman in Residence." #2 shows former child-actor Tom Brown in stripes handling a pick on the set while background extras stare at the camera. "Take your pick" the jauntily-phrased verso caption begins.Photo #3 is the stand-out of the bunch, showcasing two lynched African-American convicts surrounded by their mourning comrades. As the verso caption states: "Just a good old fashioned lynching party-- and the honored guests are Director Edward Cahn, Pat O'Brien, Jim Tully and Clarence Muse. Snapped on the set of Universal's chain gang drama, 'Laughter in Hell' where the author of the human screenplay visited the actors recently." An institutional example of this photo appeared in Bauer and Dawidziak's recent Tully biography.A rare set of publicity stills from a pre-code chain-gang film with a frank depiction of the Southern racism and a broken criminal justice system that was presumed lost until recently.

- Deutsche Erstver?ffentlichung: ?Living thoughts of Confucius? Anthony W. Riley (1929?2003) war jahrzehntelang Generalherausgeber der kritischen D?blin-Ausgabe ?Ausgew?hlte Werke in Einzelb?nden?.         Beyond the Rainbow

Boston, MA: Christopher Publishing House. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1933. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Clyde Kluckhohn's travels in the lands of the Navajo and Hopi, before the bulk of his formal ethnographic studies. Illustrated endpapers and cover of dust jacket bound in. Custom 3/4 red leather binding over marbled paper. Includes a silk ribbon bookmark. Interior is clean and free of markings. Recounts the adventures and misadventreus of a group of undergraduates from the University of Wisconsin and Oxford University seeking a route to Wild Horse Mesa in southeastern Utah. Never have we seen a signed copy of this elusive Colorado Plateau highpoint. This signed to Mildred Baker who made 5 trips to Canyon Country in the 1930's creating elaborate scrapbooks (now at the Huntington) documenting her adventures. Florence Huck joined Baker on at least one of these trips (possibly with Kluckhohn too? ) and inscribed and designed a beautiful calligraphic note on the first free endpaper. Also signed by the bookbinder John Grabau, a noted bookbinder and friend of Baker's. Baker and Huck signed the register at Rainbow bridge as the 1488th and 1489th non-native to visit this iconic Utah landmark. One of the hardest to find Colorado Plateau books; this copy being a one of a kind binding with beautiful leather work on the spine. Farquhar #122.; Book; 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall; 271 pp; Signed by Author .

        Les aspects de Lyon

Societa' grafica G. Modiano, 1933. In 8, cm 30 x 21, pp. 16 + (54 illustrazioni fotografiche). Qualche macchiolina al piatto anteriore. Leggera abrasione al piatto posteriore. Brossura editoriale. ITA

        La casa all'italiana

Edizioni Domus, 1933. In 16, pp. 158 + (4). ITA

Publisher's dark blue cloth with gilt titles to spines, facsimile signature of the author stamped in gilt to lower corner of uppers; top edges tinted blue. A tight, bright set, very lightly rubbed. "... As Chancellor of the Exchequer (1908?1915), Lloyd George was a key figure in the introduction of many reforms which laid the foundations of the modern welfare state. His most important role came as the highly energetic Prime Minister of the Wartime Coalition Government (1916?22), during and immediately after the First World War. He was a major player at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 that reordered Europe after the defeat of Germany in the Great War. He arguably made a greater impact on British public life than any other 20th-century leader, thanks to his pre-war introduction of Britain's social welfare system, his leadership in winning the war, his post-war role in reshaping Europe and his partitioning Ireland (between the Irish Free State and Northern Ireland which remained part of the UK)...
