The Old Gang and the New Gang.

London: Desmond Harmsworth, 1933 - Octavo. Original white and black cloth, title to spine black. With the dust jacket. Housed in a grey solander box. Cloth a little toned to spine and board edges; an excellent copy in the jacket with toned spine and extremities. First edition, first impression. A superb presentation copy, inscribed by the author to his wife, "To my darling wife geehos, 1933. Wyndham Lewis." Gladys Anne Hoskins (1900-1979) and Lewis were married in 1930, though he concealed this fact from his friends for much of the 1930s. In 1939 Lewis wrote to the wife of his friend John Rothenstein, explaining that: "my wife and I were most orthodoxly spliced a long time ago I have found myself rather overshadowed by [her] and she has been forced a little into the fray – we have no children. She is blonde, she tends to put on fat, her mother was German, her father a good British farmer she has ridden all over the Atlas on a mule and is a great reader of my books; but you can see she is a wife in a thousand." One of 1,000 copies printed. Morrow & Lafourcade A20. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        Underground Railways of London.

1933 - London: The Underground Group, 1933. Colour-printed map, 140 x 205mm, folded twice as issued. The second card version of the diagrammatic map of London's tube network, first published in January the same year. The added text box refers to work on the Piccadilly Line due in September, not yet completed. Already there are changes to the design: with circles replacing the diamonds of the interchanges; a compass pointer, superfluous on a diagramatic map, has been added top right, apparently without consulting Beck; and the awkward relationship between the Bakerloo and Metropolitan lines between Paddington, Praed Street and Edgeware Road has been simplified. Changes to the Underground infrastucture include: the renaming of Dover Street to Greek Park; the amalgamation of British Museum Station and Holborn; the opening of the Piccadilly extension to Cockfosters; and the closure of the District Line between Ealing Common and South Harrow.         A Glastonbury Romance

The Bodley Head London 1933 - VERY RARE SIGNED first edition of the Bodley Head 1933 hardback. A typical blue ink scrawled signature, in full, across the title page. This looks as if it has been written in some kind of permanent blue fountain pen ik, because it is fresh looking. The book is still fairly tightly bound, and although it is obviously a book that has been used it has obviously been treated with respect. It is printed on a thin onion skin type of paper, which is necessary with such an extensive text; the spine is sunned. It has a previous owner's blind stamp to the half title, but this is rather attractive so it does not seem like a fault. The cloth binding is not damaged. No jacket, alas. But, just to emphasise, this is rare as a signed first edition. The great Simon & Schuster limited edition is the most desirable for the collector, but this Bodley Head edition is even rarer as a signed first.         The Arthur Rackham Fairy Book.

London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd,, 1933. A Book of Old Favourites with New Illustrations. Octavo (226 x 149 mm). Specially bound for the publisher in green full morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, gilt lettered and panelled spine, concentric gilt panels on sides with gilt corner ornaments from designs by Rackham, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, two-line gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers (the original pictorial endpapers bound in after binder's blanks). With the publisher's card slipcase (with hand-numbered label). Colour frontispiece and 7 colour plates, black and white illustrations in the text, by Rackham. Spine lightly sunned. An excellent copy. Deluxe edition, number 1 of 460 copies signed by the artist. This is one of ten "special copies" reserved by the publisher from the total edition, presented in a specially commissioned luxury binding and including a delightful full-page original pen-and-ink and watercolour drawing by Rackham (signed "Arthur Rackham"), showing Hansel and Gretel being greeted by the Witch at the door of her gingerbread cottage. In addition, this copy includes, on the limitation leaf, a pen-and-ink thumbnail self-portrait by Rackham (signed "AR") of himself doffing his top hat to the inscription "To G.S.H. 'Salaam'": the dedicatee being George Steward Harrap, eldest of the four children of the publisher George Harrap. Describing his artistic method for these "specials", Rackham pointed out that "my little sketches must inevitably be of a light hearted or joking nature... They have to be spontaneous and free handed. The nature of the paper is such that there can be no preparatory drawing and no alterations". Riall comments that "From The King of the Golden River [1932], Harrap issued nine or ten copies, seven being for sale, of a special issue of the first limitation numbers of the limited edition" (A New Bibliography of Arthur Rackham, 1994, p. xvi).

Two personal photograph albums relating to Catchpole's life at home in the United Kingdom, and to his time at Abadan in Iran and in Turkey. Persia, Turkey and other places, 1930s.

1933. Oblong small folio. 2 albums, the first containing 237 original photographs, the majority snapshots but some larger, mostly captioned by hand, also with a loosely inserted pencil sketch captioned "Our first home Abadan '42. Drawing room with Persian rugs", the second containing 52 original photographs, snapshots or larger, and a further 27 images in paper wallet (some duplicates). Contemp. rexine or papered boards. Fascinating collection of private photos showing the Abadan Oil refinery and life on the site in the 1930s. A series of 120 or so images is devoted to William Catchpole's time on the Abadan oilfields near Basrah and Kuwait. Catchpole became a chemist with the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company in 1933, and presumably was asked to visit the plant in this capacity. The photographs of this period show scenes on the voyages out (aboard the MV British Pride, an Anglo-Iranian tanker), life in Abadan (including the horse races), and the refinery itself. A group of 16 images show elements of the refinery, including the "cracking plant", "distillation units", and other features. Other photographs show the docks, and several show flares in the desert. The second album is undated and uncaptioned, though examination of one loosened photograph reveals a pencilled note to the verso ("Turkey between Harida Pasha and Ankara"). The photographs in the album show recreational and work-related images, including boating events, a pipeline, and three of an unidentified refinery. - William Marcus Catchpole was a grandson of Nathaniel Catchpole, founder of the brewing company Catchpole & Co. of Suffolk. The family and the business were based at Whitton, and some of the images from the first album show scenes and people at home. William Catchpole attended Radley College, and further images show the college and rowers on the river; some 100 images in the first album relate to the family's life in the UK.

Typed document signed ("T. E. Shaw A/C" and "Arnold Green"). No place, 5. IX. 1933.

1933. Folio (13 x 8 inches). 2 pp. Brake Horse Power Test Sheet for a 8/28 h.p. engine. The document dates from Aircraftsman Shaw's second spell with the Air Force. It is completed with technical data including water temperature‚ oil pressure‚ etc. Marked "Air Ministry Engine Under Trial"‚ it apparently relates to the testing of the marine engines of the type installed in powered dinghies used for ferrying air and ground crews to moored flying boats and for general coastal duties. An intriguing document from his later Air Force days, and a splendid document late in life, when Lawrence was working on speed boats and motors.

46 eigenh. Briefe und 77 eh. Brief- und (Bild)Postkarten mit U. bzw. Paraphe sowie 6 Telegramme von und 92 Schriftstücke an Lili Marberg. Verschiedene Orte, ca. 1933 bis 1962.

1933. Zusammen 273 SS. von und 103 Bll. an L. M. Verschiedene Formate. Beiliegend 77 Bll. Bürgermeistern u. a.

In the very good original dustwrapper with a wonderful design printed in black and white on a green background. Price of $2.50 still intact on the inner front flap. Some light chipping to the very top and bottom of spine and panel edges. Slightly thumbed but overall a better than very good example of this fragile dustwrapper. The same black and white on green wrapper design is reproduced on the endpapers. All in all a superior copy of this classic of twentieth century literature.

Autograph letter signed. Moscow, 14. IX. 1933.

1933. 4to. 3½ pp. on 2 ff. With autogr. envelope. In Russian, to his third wife, Natalja, on a day he and Ivan Vassilyevitch Kljun spent together attending an exhibition of the Red Workers' and Peasants' Army and visiting officials. Kljun urged him to have his hair cut, as Malevich resembled a "savage". They failed to meet Lobanov, who wanted a landscape. "[...] You cannot imagine my sentiments. What else should I do, and how wait? I am completely starved, and although I have eaten quite well these two days at Ivan Vassilyevitch's, there is no way I might be satiated, and after all, I cannot live at his place, and there is nowhere for me to go. I still have no money to go to Nemchinovka and stay there overnight [...] It's simply a nightmare when the thought turns up that something might happen to me, a severe mental illness might afflict me. Tomorrow I will try to see mother, maybe I can raise some money there [...]". Also, Malevich mentions his difficult relationship with his brother, and that he avoids seeing him: "That's what it amounts to, when a man has not a penny, they all start to lecture you and call you a fool [...] Yes, this is hard indeed for me; when people find out that you have to money, they change their ways entirely. [...]" (transl.).

Festgabe zum 60. Geburtstag. Manuskriptalbum von verschiedenen Händen. Berlin, Bremen, Bückeburg, Göttingen, Kalksburg, Lambarene, Starnberg u. a. O., zumeist Sommer 1933.

1933. 20 Beiträge auf zus. 56 beschr. SS. Mit 3 Tuschzeichnungen (Bückeburger Motive) und 2 montierten Fotografien. Originaler grüner Maroquinband mit Wappensupralibros. Kopfgoldschnitt. Gr.-8vo. Im zeitgenöss. Pappschuber. Motorboote legen an Dampfer an ...
