LOUIS FERDINAND CÉLINE
[Attributes: Signed Copy]

EINSTEIN, Albert.
1932. Signed by Einstein for a fellow advocate of a universal language Original photographic print (121 x 70 mm; image size 75 x 55 mm). Stock number printed on verso "1016". Signed by Einstein in ink below the image, "Albert Einstein, 1932". The photograph, showing Einstein in a pale pinstriped suit, wing collar, and plain necktie, was taken at a press conference on the occasion of Einstein's first visit to Caltech in Pasadena on 2 January 1931. Einstein wintered at Caltech in 1931, 1932, and 1933. Provenance: from the collection of Leonard Nowell Mansell Newell [pseud. Eleno Vinfero] (1902-1968). Newell was an English Esperantist, teaching the language and editing various periodicals. He also wrote poetry strongly influenced by the Budapest School of writers. He spent the second half of his life in Australia. It is not recorded how Newell obtained the signed photo, but it may be significant that in late July 1932, the year of the inscription, Newell was secretary general of the 24th World Esperanto Congress in Paris. Einstein, an ardent anti-nationalist and supporter of international co-operation, took a favourable view of Esperanto, the auxiliary language created in the 1870s and 1880s by L. L. Zamenhof, a Jew from Bialystok, whose linguistic invention was viewed with great suspicion by Hitler and the Nazis. "For international communication, use of an international language is not only necessary," Einstein wrote, "it is the obvious solution. Esperanto is the best solution for an international language." On 30 July 1932, Einstein was back in Germany, in Caputh near Pot … [Click Below for Full Description]

However, I expect to be in Warm Springs the first part of May and I shall hope to see you all again. Very sincerely yours, Franklin D. RooseveltHistorical BackgroundOn April 7, 1932, Roosevelt delivered his "Forgotten Man" speech at Albany, which was broadcast via radio to the people of New York State. "These unhappy times call for the building of plans that rest upon the forgotten," Roosevelt said, "the unorganized but the indispensable units of economic power for plans like those of 1917 that build from the bottom up and not from the top down, that put their faith once more in the forgotten man at the bottom of the economic pyramid." Roosevelt appealed to the "little fellow" among his hearers and readers, "Here should be an objective of Government itself, to provide at least as much assistance to the little fellow as it is now giving to the large banks and corporations." Roosevelt concluded, "It is high time to get back to fundamentals. It is high time to admit with courage that we are in the midst of an emergency at least equal to that of war. Mae West
New York: Diamond Lil by Mae West NEW YORK: The Macauley Company, 1932 In the early years of the Depression and Prohibition, Americans needed a bit of wild escapism and Mae West was just the ticket. This tawdry book followed her 1928 play of the same name and then a film version starring a young Cary Grant entitled, "She Done Him Wrong." This particular copy is signed by the iconic playwright/actress to Blaine Cordner, who began his stage career in the late 1920s and acted in a number of memorable plays including Arsenic and Old Lace. He died in 1971, shortly before he was to appear on stage in a revival of one of his earlier roles. The inscription reads, "To Blaine, Come on in - Mae West" There is no dust jacket but the book is in very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition]

Winston S. Churchill
London: Thornton Butterworth Ltd., 1932. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a finely bound first edition, first printing of Churchill's collection of 23 engaging essays on an incredibly wide variety of subjects, first published in 1932. The exceptional fine binding was executed in full dark red morocco by the renowned Bayntun-Riviere bindery of Bath, England. The exceptional goatskin binding features a hubbed spine with tooled spine bands and gilt-ruled compartments gilt stamped with the title and a lion rampant. There are gilt rule borders on the covers, gilt rules on the binding edges, gilt page edges, and double blind-ruled gilt turn-ins with decorative corner devices and framing striking, marbled endpapers. Churchill's facsimile signature is stamped in gilt on the center front cover. Even the gold and red head and foot bands are executed with noteworthy skill and aesthetic effect. Overall, a lovely example of the binder's craft and a reminder that all fine bindings are not created equal. “BAYNTUN-RIVIERE BATH" is gilt-stamped on the lower front pastedown. In 1939 the George Bayntun firm acquired the Rivière Bindery, the year before he died. The Bayntun-Rivière Bindery has been in residence on Manvers Street in Bath since 1939. Condition of this finely bound first edition would be fine but for a single flaw – the page edge gilt has flaked in a number of places, imparting a mottled appearance to the otherwise clean page edges. Apart from this flaw, all else is stunning. The binding is bright and clean with no reportable wear or blemishes. The contents are … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vinogradova, V.
Sverdlovsk [Yekaterinburg]: Uralpartizdat, 1932. 52 pp. 23x15 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Minor tears of the spine, otherwise near fine. Photomontage cover design shows curious example of Ural constructivism. It's located on the both covers and features picture of factory. The work was produced by Gennadii Liakhin who contributed to Ural book design since 1928. His works always depicted working men - miners, steelworkers, engineers - and places where they were caught. For the inner design was responsible 'the book constructor' N. Peltinovich arranging photographs and chapters: the edition illustrated with photographs of shock-workers. A story of the second blast furnace of Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works is interesting because that was built by komsomol youth shock-workers and all was done 25 percent faster and half cheaper than the first blast furnace. The experience that the young people got in the extremely short period of time was regarded as the best education. And this book is dedicated to problems they faced and successfully solved. Worldcat doesn't track this edition.

BLOSSFELDT, Karl.
Berlin: Verlag für Kunstwissenschaft, 1932. Quarto. 16 page booklet and 120 loose plates in the original brown card chemise portfolio, decoration and titles to front cover and spine in black. Portfolio lightly toned to edges, otherwise an internally bright copy. 120 full page photogravures by Blossfeldt. First edition, first printing, portfolio edition: the preferred format of one of the greatest and most influential photographic books ever published, this being the second photobook in Blossfeldt's pivotal trilogy. The artist was by training a botanist; his use of extreme close-up technique began as part of his study. However he swiftly developed a fully fledged abstracted aesthetic which found a ready audience around the world. Many subsequent photographers cite his books as a key influence on their work. This loose leaf version is by far the scarcest of all of Blossfeldt's publications and by a margin the most desirable. Roth 101 p48 [Attributes: First Edition]
