Thoughts and Adventures: "Robert Boothby from Winston S. Churchill Nov. 1932". Robert Boothby (1900-1986) was chosen by Churchill to be his parliamentary private secretary in 1926, holding the post until the government fell at the 1929 general election. "Over the years his relations with Churchill, though intermittently close, were scarred by differences of opinion, for instance on India and the abdication of Edward VIII, and above all by Boothby's natural incapacity to be a disciple or courtier" (ODNB). In a letter to Martin Gilbert, Boothby noted that he received in 1935 a wedding gift from the Churchills ("a magnificent silver ink-stand and pot") and commented "I was then still … [Click Below for Full Description]

FAULKNER, William (1897-1962) [and Ernest HEMINGWAY (1899-1961)]
Milwaukee: Casanova Press, 1932. Tall 8vo. 53, [1] pp. Photographic portrait of Faulkner mounted as frontispiece. Original printed wrappers, the rear wrapper printing Ernest Hemingway's poem "Ultimately"; publisher's board slipcase. Light rubbing to slipcase, a pale offset on endpapers; the book bright and fresh. FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE, number 483 of 525 numbered copiesThis was the first book issued by Milwaukee's Casanova Press, designed by Paul Romaine, who, he states on the colophon, "is obviously very unlike Aldus or Bodoni, but who is very young and has many years to correct the glaring defects herein of composition." The articles and poems in Salmagundi first appeared in the New Orleans' magazine The Double Dealer and were reprinted with Faulkner's permission. The inclusion of Hemingway's poem on the rear wrapper was done as "just a whim," but "a whim inspired by one of the oddest coincidences in modern literature: William Faulkner's poem Portrait and Ernest Hemingway's poem, Ultimately, both appear on page 337 of the June 1922 issue of The Double Dealer. (The meticulous Louis Cohn will be glad to know this, I am sure, since he forgot to include it in his complete bibliography of Hemingway's works.... He also left out the names of the horses from whence came the glue to bind Hemingway's books" (Preface). In addition to Hemingway's poem, Salmagundi contains five poems and three prose pieces by Faulkner. Massey 753; Petersen A11a.

PETERS, Alan [Dr. Isaac HIPSHON]
Heath Cranton Limited London 1932. First Edition. Ogle dustjacket art. Author's first novel. Peters was a pseudonym for a prominent writer in the Leeds Jewish community. "Robert Steele, M. D., young volatile, hot headed, enthusiastic, believed that finding the cause was not half as important as find the cure; and by a lucky accident stumbled across a promising clue. Working feverishly night and day he finally succeeds in finding the cure for cancer, but at the moment of triumph hi is ruined, or almost ruined, by man's commonest weakness. The author takes us into the Cancer Research Department of a University, into the wards of a Hospital, even into its Post Mortem Room. We are taken into the homes of the slum patients, into their bedrooms, Doctor's consulting rooms, Nursing Homes, Convalescent Homes and even Materinty Homes throw their doors open wide for us; and finally we are allowed to invade the dread precincts of that august tribunal the General Medical Council." Very scarce and early novel dealing with cancer treatment. Almost Near Fine, some foxing to page edges, mild cocking, in Very Good dustjacket, chipped at spine ends, small chip at mid front panel. [ROYAL NAVY].
C. 1919-1932. Smalll 4to. Red half-morocco over cloth-boards, ruled in gilt, 145 photos of various sizes (snapshot to full plate) mounted onto brown carton, four loose photos; light wear and marking to binding, a few snapshots a bit faded. This is the documentation of naval - and private - life by one Mr Nicholson. The album opens with an aerial view of HMS Nelson (commissioned in 1927) and her sister HMS Rodney moored on a long jetty alongside other Navy vessels, with an early aircraft carrier, probably the Argus, the first of this design (1918) in the background. In the middle of the album are two relatively early photos of HMS Warspite, taken before her two funnels were trunked into one in 1924. This ship rose to fame at least twice, in 1916, in the battle of Jutland and in 1940 during both battles of Narvik. Inbetween these two photos is a portait of one 'Sir Charles' (not Forbes). Other photos show military aircraft, entertainment on board, including a pantomime, an automobile and holiday photos from around the world. We were able to find out that the album contains several portraits of the gunner of the HMS Nelson Kenneth "Nick" Nicholson.

Homer
(London): 1932. Quarto. Unpaginated. One of 530 copies, printed and published by Rogers, Sir Emery Walker, and Wilfred Merton. Illustrated with 26 decorations of Homeric figures printed in black on round backgrounds of gold. It was Rogers who, upon reading Seven Pillars of Wisdom, decided that T.E. Lawrence would be an ideal translator for a new edition of the Odyssey--a process that was expected to take two years and ended up taking four. The famous gold roundels--one of the signature features of this edition--were based on Rogers's drawings of figures from Greek vases, each one depicting a scene from Homer's epic. These illustrations famously required seven passes through the press. Even the ink was specially made from an early 19th-century formula, using an oily resinous balsam that resulted in "a depth of black without gloss" in the roundels, as well as lending the book a slightly spicy aroma. A BR30 title, this is one of Rogers' most beautiful books and, according to Joseph Blumenthal, "indisputably among the most beautiful books ever produced ... with only type and paper and ink, with consummate skill, Rogers created a masterpiece." Lower corners bumped and show minor rubbing, traces of drying to top and bottom of spine, else fine housed in original slipcase, which shows general wear and tape repair. Bookplate. (Warde 157; Blumenthal p.134; O'Brien A141).
