A. P. Laurie, M.A., D.Sc., LL.D.
Oxford - University Press - London - Humphrey Milford 1932 - The Brushwork of Rembrandt and his School by A. P. Laurie. Illustrated with photomicrographs with one hundred and twenty-seven plates to rear. In original unclipped dustwrapper. First edition. Dedicated to the Duke of Westminster and with an introduction to front by Laurie dated 1932. Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606- 1669) was a Dutch painter and etcher. He is generally considered one of the greatest painters and printmakers in European art history and the most important in Dutch history. His contributions to art came in a period of great wealth and cultural achievement that historians call the Dutch Golden Age when Dutch Golden Age painting, although in many ways antithetical to the Baroque style that dominated Europe, was extremely prolific and innovative. Condition: In a cloth binding with unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, in excellent condition with only minor marks to spine and slight bumping. Dustwrapper has the odd slight closed tear, marginal age toning and occasional marks. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and generally clean throughout with only minor foxing to first and last few pages. Some pages unopened. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED with a VERY GOOD dustwrapper [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

DOMAS [Thought]. Daiļliterātūras, mākslas un zinātnes mēnešraksts [Monthly review for literature, arts and science]. 9th year, no. 5 (1932). Ed. by Roberts Hermanis-Sēlis. Rīga: Literātu biedriba Domas (Riti) 1932. 24,5:17 cm, [1], 322-384, [16, table of contents for issues no. 1-5 (1932), advertisements] pp. Original sewn publisher's wrappers with red and black lino-cut cover illustration and title on white stock. Issue no. 5 of 10 of this 9th year of »Domas«, a particularly important Latvian modernist magazine, containing contributions by mostly left-wing artists, writers, scientists and politicians. »Domas« was published between 1924 and 1934 in 10 issues each year (year 8 (1931) in 12 issues; year 11 (1934) in 4). - This issue contains four remarkable lino-cuts by Adja Junkerss (or Adja Yunkers), who after 1945 became an important abstract painter in the US. Furthermore this issue contains among others texts by Latvian avant-garde poets Aleksandrs Čaks und Kārlis Dziļleja. Spine with one small foxy spot, last part with small water-stains in the lower right corner, paper slightly time-stained, otherwise fine copy of this rare item. Like for all other issues of this year Kārlis Bušs created a two-coloured constructivist cover design. Bušs was student at the art class of the Riga adult education center (RTA), a centre for progressive artists of those days lead by Sigismunds Vidbergs and Romans Suta. „For a brief period at the end of its publication (1931/1932), »Domas« covers were typographically bold with late-constructivist imagery in flat color, exhibiting a diff … [Click Below for Full Description]

TRIBĪNE [The Tribune]. Revolucionārās kultūras žurnāls [Revolutionary Cultural Journal]. Edited by Jānis Bušs. 2nd year, no. 4 (Aug. 1932). Lino-cut cover design and frontispiece with photomontage by Ernest Kāļis. Rīga: Latvju Kultura 1932. 15,3:23 cm. 47 [1] pp. Original stapled publisher's wrapper with black linocut cover illustration and title on cream stock. Issue no. 4 of this 2nd year of »Tribīne«, one of the most influential Latvian communist avant-garde magazines. »Tribīne« was published between 1931 and 1933 in a total of 12 issues (1st year: nos. 1-4, 5/6; 2nd year: nos. 1-4; 3rd year, no. 1-2). The magazine was repeatedly confiscated, it's first chief editor, Jānis Bušs, went to prison. Preceded issue contains text contributions by Linards Lāicens, Emīls Fross and Pēteris Zars. Other authors were signing with monograms, pseudonyms or not at all, to prevent troubles with the authorities. Alongside the confiscation of the latest two issues in July 1933, publisher Lāicens had to flee Latvia and settled in the Soviet Union, where he felt prey to the Stalinist political cleansing in 1938. As far as illustrations are concerned, this volume contains a striking title-page showing a photomontage by Latvian and Soviet avant-garde artist Ernest Kāļis. Kāļis also designed the cover of all issues of »Tribīne« (except year 3, nos. 1 and 2) and his striking constructivist lino-cut transports a clear but nevertheless autonomous reference to Lajos Kassák's »Bildarchitektur«. Paper time-stained, front cover and first 3 leafs with one small tear, otherwise fine copy of this … [Click Below for Full Description]

BLACKWOOD, Algernon
1932 - 1 page, 4to (15 lines), signed in full, on Savile Club letterhead. November 19/32. Blackwood regrets he cannot attend an "Uncanny Stories Dinner", and thanks the writer for praising his own tales.".I always feel that a god 1uncanny' story, or ghost story, should have a genuine other-worldly meaning, however deeply hidden in it - though not, of course, and explanation, which is quite another matter. Simon, André L.
London & Paris: Maggs Brothers, 1932. Two volumes. Quarto. Cloth and boards, untrimmed. Illustrations and facsimiles. Boards a bit edgeworn and smudged, some faint splashmarks to spines, tiny snag at crown of one spine, bookplates and ownership stamp (see below), a good set, internally very good. First editions, limited to 250 and 275 numbered copies respectively. A charming association copy, inscribed on the free endsheet of the first volume: "O. Madox Hueffer Hommage amical André L. Simon." The recipient, Oliver Madox Hueffer (1876-1931), was himself a productive novelist and journalist, although he has been largely overshadowed by his better known older brother. According to his biographer, on 21 June 1931, after "an exceptionally good dinner" (wine choice unreported), Hueffer is said to have exclaimed "I've never felt better in my life," and died of a heart attack, aged fifty-four. The first volume subsequently rested for awhile with the Polish Naval Association, London, with their stamp on the front pastedown, and then migrated to the reference library of London bookselling firm, Francis Edwards Ltd, where it joined the second volume and had inserted their bookplate in each volume (noted as "Not for Sale" but sold with the substantial portion of the Edwards reference library by Maggs Bros ca 1985). A key work from the period of the first blush of wine bibliography, by its long dominant figure. GABLER G38730.

VUČO, Aleksandar: Nemenikuće. Ćirilo i metodije [Nemenikuće. Kyrill und Method]. Beograd: Nadrealistička izdanja [Surrealistischer Verlag] (Narodnoj Stampariji [Staatsdruckerei]) 1932, 33, [3] Seiten. Gr. 4° (20,44 x 27,2 cm). Svetoslav Minkov
T. F. Chipev, 1932. Original publisher's wrappers, 12mo - 175/125mm., 110+2 p. The book contents five science fiction stories from Svetoslav Minkov, called "the father of Bulgarian science fiction". The title of the book is game of words - in Bulgarian "Avtomati" means Automats or Machines, but machine guns too. The main theme in Minkov's stories from this period is the human who becomes a machine, a soulless robot. This transformation is equal to death. The cover of Sirak Skitnik speaks itself. The letter "B" (equal to "V" in Bulgarian) constructed as a domino mask symbolize this transformation. The "T" letter is constructed as butt of a machine gun and "O" as a muzzle aimed straight at us. You will be death, speaks this cover. Sirak Skitnik (Panayot Todorov). Orphan Wanderer is English translation of this pseudonym. Sirak Skitnik is Born on November 22, 1883 graduated from theological school in Sofia (1902). In 1908 he moved to Petersburg, where he studied painting at the private school of Leon Bakst (classmate of Marc Chagall and Wassily Kandinsky). Member of the group "Mir iskusstva" which in the late 19th century and early 20th century a center of Russian artistic avant-garde. Acquainted with modern trends in European art experiences influence of decorative Petersburg school (Nicholas Roerich, Ivan Bilibin, Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin). About this copy. It's very good + at all. Fresh and bright paper and colors, the spine is strong and clean. It would be almost perfect, But - slightly uneven outlines and inscription of ex-owner on the title page (see the pictures). WAUGH, Evelyn.
London Chapman & Hall, 1932. First edition, one of the limited issue, number 183 of 250 large paper copies signed by the author, large 8vo., plates and illustrations by the Author not included in the trade edition, original mauve cloth, fading to spine and margins of boards, printed dust-jacket, spine slightly darkened, some very minor fraying to head and tail of spine, but a near-fine example overall, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, preserved in custom-made slip-case. Seemingly a difficult edition to find in the dust-jacket and in such good condition. Waugh's third novel, helped to establish his reputation as a master satirist. Set on the fictional African island of Azania, the novel chronicles the efforts of Emperor Seth, assisted by the Englishman Basil Seal, to modernise his kingdom, including the issue of home-made currency and the staging of a 'Birth Control Gala'. Written by Waugh whilst staying at Madresfield Court, Worcestershire as the guest of the Lygon sisters, who after 1931 had the run of the place (their father, William Lygon, 7th Earl Beauchamp, having been forced into exile under threat of prosecution for his homosexuality) and posed for some of the drawings Waugh drew for this limited edition.
