UNIDENTIFIED.
SAN DIEGO, LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA: (1932). 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. On offer is a super, original 1932 through 1936 manuscript diary handwritten by an unidentified Southern California young newlywed Navy wife traveling for the most part up and down the West Coast of America following her husband Glen who is stationed mostly in San Diego and Long Beach but does go to Bremerton Washington and some trips to the East Coast. Written right in the heart of the Great Depression the diary begins with the couple married a year and this is the year he is stationed in Bremerton. They take a road trip in April to Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Wyoming, Idaho and Oregon finally ending in Bremerton six weeks later. Not too long after it's back to southern California. We note many local references to events: in 1933, Long Beach experienced an earthquake which she mentions because the day before she drove from San Diego to Long Beach to attend the fights with Glen and sure enough the next night while at the fights the earthquake hit. She also writes of the California Pacific International Exposition that was held in San Diego starting in 1935 and also 1936. It was held at Balboa Park. Here are some snippets: 1932 "January 3rd, Glen and I drove to Hollywood and went to matinee at Grauman's Chinese. Saw Hell Divers. Dinner on Seventh St. at French place. Nice day.....January 23rd, Having a Santa Ana today. Cold too. Glen and I packed part of the things this afternoon. At night we went to Palace and saw "Frankenstein". From the collection of the noted pianist, teacher and collector Jacob Lateiner (1928-2010), with a note laid in from the distinguished music antiquarian Albi Rosenthal (1914-2004): "for Jacob - as a souvenir of his first (and frustrating) visit to Otto Haas - Albi, London, 12 May 1967." Wrappers slightly worn and soiled. First Edition. Moldenhauer pp. 714-15. "Alban Berg repeatedly assured the composer of his special admiration for this work. On 19 August 1932 he wrote: 'This Quartet is a miracle. What amazes me above all is its originality.' Schoenberg was equally impressed. On receipt of the printed score he thanked Webern for the 'fabulous piece.' Today theorists recognize the Quartet as a masterpiece of formal construction." Moldenhauser pp. 426-27.Dr. David Josef Bach (1874-1947), an important figure in Viennese cultural life in the first quarter of the 20th century, was a significant patron of the arts, an academic, and a writer who championed the dissemination of the arts to the masses. to SENATOR JAMES THOMAS 'COTTON TOM' HEFLIN
LOUINA LAFAYETTE MONTGOMERY BIRMINGHAM ALABAMA AL: Manuscript. 8vo-over 7¾"-9¾" tall. On offer is a super archive of approximately 95 original, manuscript letters and ephemera sent to or belonging to the 'colorful', beloved and in some circles despised Alabama Legislator Senator James Thomas 'Cotton Tom' Heflin. There is little argument that the State of Alabama probably has not had a more colorful or controversial U.S. senator than J. Thomas Heflin, or as he was more commonly called, "Cotton Tom" Heflin. He is known as the "Father of Mother's Day, " having written and achieved passage of the national holiday. But he is also notable as one of the era's most vehement supporters of convict leasing and white supremacy, having helped draft the language in the 1901 Constitution that essentially barred African American Alabamians from voting. This group of letters offers a fascinating insight into the power and politics of the day and the persona of this man as all the incoming letters mostly from 1932 while in the Senate to 1937 and 1938 when he suffered from illness and suffered a lost election are, whether from friends, family, business and political associates in state or out of state, they almost all touch upon politics and both personal and public matters; his poor health, his election, why he is needed in congress, and letters about him losing the election and why he needs to run again-and this 7-8 years from his last term in office ended in 1931! Many of the letters entreat Alabamians to return Heflin to the Senate. Many letters are worshipful. And as colorful as Cotton T … [Click Below for Full Description]
