EINSTEIN, ALBERT; HUBBARD, WILLIAM
np: np, 1932. First edition. UNPUBLISHED CANDID PHOTOGRAPHS OF EINSTEIN AND LETTERS BY WILLIAM HUBBARD OFFERING AN INTIMATE VIEW OF THE SCIENTIST ON VACATION. On March 2, 1932, at the height of his career and world fame, Albert Einstein and his wife Elsa set off on a vacation to their German homeland, departing from Los Angeles on the M. S. San Francisco. Another passenger aboard the ship was the renowned music scholar, William Lines Hubbard. Famous in his own right, Hubbard was the music critic for the Chicago Tribune and author of a definitive 11-volume work on the history of opera (published 1908). Accompanying Hubbard was his companion Julia Reid, their cabins adjacent to that of the Einstein's. As was the practice during this era, Hubbard kept detailed journals and letters of his travel experiences. This collection, from the estate of Hubbard, contains the following items:
 1. Three unpublished small black-and-white and sepia photographs. The first photograph (4.5" x 2.5") pictures Einstein, his wife Elsa, the Ship's Captain, Hubbard (the tall figure) and three other of the ship's passengers, dated 3/14/32. The second photograph (3.5" x 3.25") is an outstanding full front image of Einstein, his wife Elsa, and the ship's Captain. The final photograph (4.5" x 2.5") is a full frontal image of Einstein and his wife Elsa both seated in deck chairs with the ship's Captain standing behind.
 2. Typed letter dated March 22, 1932, written while sailing through the South Atlantic. Six pages, typed front and back on two pieces (folded) of the ship's original stationary (approx … [Click Below for Full Description]

Louis-Ferdinand CELINE
First edition, one of 100 numbered copies on alfa paper, this one of the few nominative hors commerce copies, printed specially for Jean Ballard, the only large paper copies with 10 on Arches paper, also nominative. §Handsome autograph inscription from Louis-Ferdinand Céline to Jean Ballard, director of Cahiers du Sud, which published extracts from Voyage just before its publication, as well as one of the longest reviews devoted to the work. §Few people recognized at first the importance of this debut novel. Céline pitched the manuscript to Gallimard, Bossart, Figuière and of course Denoël, who were the only ones to show any real enthusiasm. Nonetheless, they printed only 2,000 copies and reached out to a number of reviews to publish extracts, including Cahiers du Sud, Europe, and Monde a few days before publication. Nominative copies on Arches or alfa paper, reserved for those close to the author, are even more sought after than the 110 large paper copies commercially sold. Unnumbered for the most part, they have still not been counted precisely. Therefore, we still only know the copies of R. Beckers, M. Dorian, J. Ajalbert, L. Daudet, L. and M. Descaves (on Arches), R.-L. Doyon, L. Hennique, G. Picard, Rosny jeune, C. Dullin and V. Moremans, R. Gallier and J. Ballard. These copies do not have the publisher's advertising brochure at end. §This copy is in a box by Julie Nadot, reproducing the original cover of the work. §A very good and rare copy. % Denoël & Steele Paris 1932 12x19cm broché sous étui

BOHR, Niels.
Copenhagen: IIe Congrs International de la Lumire, 1932. Copenhagen: IIe Congrès International de la Lumière, 1932. First edition of this famous lecture, which marks Bohr's first detailed attempt to apply concepts arising from quantum mechanics (particularly complementarity) to areas outside physics. “Here, for the first time, Bohr raised a question that was to preoccupy him, off and on, until his death: Would it ever be possible to push the analysis of living processes to the limit where they can be described in terms of pure physics and chemistry?” (Pais, p. 441). Bohr's lecture can be viewed as one of the foundation stones of molecular biology in that it inspired the young physicist Max Delbrück—who was in the audience when Bohr delivered it—to switch from physics to biology. “It is fair to say that with Max, Bohr found his most influential philosophical disciple outside the domain of physics, in that through Max, Bohr provided one of the intellectual fountainheads for the development of 20th century biology” (quoted in Pais, p. 442). This pamphlet, dated 1932, apparently predates both the lecture's publication in Danish in <i>Naturens Verden</i>, in English in <i>Nature</i>, and in German in <i>Naturwissenschaften</i>, all of which were published in 1933. “Bohr had a life-long interest in philosophy, publishing three volumes of philosophical essays. He was also the son of the distinguished physiologist Christian Bohr, a student of Carl Ludwig, who discovered the cooperative binding of oxygen to hemoglobin. It is therefore not entirely surprising that, when he was as … [Click Below for Full Description]

LAWRENCE, D. H;
[Click Below for Full Description]

New York: Museum of Modern Art. An unusually attractive copy of this seminal 1932 MoMA catalogue, which essentially ushered in the age of modernism in architecture. Tight and VG+ to Near Fine in its pictorial wrappers, with strong, very bright titling to the front panel. Fading and a bit of light creasing along the spine (and at its crown) but the solid binding and the striking, very presentable covers more than make up for this. Quarto, Foreword by MoMA's Director Alfred Barr, Jr., Historical Note by Philip Johnson. The "Exhibiting Architects" section curated by Henry-Russell Hitchcock, Lewis Mumford and Philip Johnson. 5, 000 copies printed. Near Fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Cochran met Earhart in New York in 1935 at Paul Hammond's house. They bonded instantly and became close friends. In 1936, Cochran flew west across the length of the country as co-pilot with Earhart in Earhart's specially outfitted Lockheed Electra which she had just purchased for her projected 1937 around the world flight. Earhart stayed with Cochran at her Indio, California ranch where she rested up and did her preparations for her final historic flight in which she was lost over the Pacific (for a fuller account of the association and friendship, see Jacqueline’s Cochran's autobiography, The Stars At Noon, pp. 135-143). Jacqueline Cochran (1910-1980) was first woman to fly faster than the speed of sound and break the sonic barrier. She held more speed, altitude and distance records than any other pilot, male or female. No one has ever matched Cochran’s achievement. Earhart’s presentation copies are rare. This copy mentioning the plane in which she disappeared and linking the two greatest Aviatrixes of the 20th Century is an historic piece and the finest presentation copy to appear for public sale. Enclosed in a handsome custom morocco and cloth clamshell box.

Clarence Darrow
Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1932. One of fifteen copies in the full cloth presentation binding, signed per the limitation, near fine. Darrow's The Story of My Life is an American classic, the autobiography of the country's most famous trial lawyer. There were two bindings of this first signed edition: a subscriber binding (294 copies) and a presentation binding (15 copies). The subscriber copies were bound in a soft quarter cloth over soft grey paper boards and the entire binding wears poorly. There was, additionally, a presentation binding, in strong full polished cream cloth (with the title stamped into the cloth rather than separately labeled), but only fifteen of these were issued. This is one of the 15, in near fine condition, just a touch of trivial shelwear, absolutely no fraying or wear to the cloth, no bumps, contents also near fine, small periord bookseller tag on inside front pastedown. A lovely copy in a binding that is strong and flexible and can still be enjoyed as a book. The presentation binding copies were not numbered but the limitation is 15. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
