[Olympic Games]: [Los Angeles]
Los Angeles, 1932. Thirty-nine programs, variously 8pp. to 32pp. Original blue cloth, gilt. Extremities lightly rubbed. Bookplates on front pastedown. Small chips to top edge of fly leaf. Else quite fine. Collected programs from the tenth Olympic Games, held in Los Angeles in 1932. Held during the Great Depression, the Games had a remarkably low participation turnout but nonetheless managed to make a profit. The Los Angeles Olympics are notable for introducing many of the features of the modern format still in use today. A wonderful collection.

One photo shows the Colorado River with a caption which reads, "one mile below rim of canyon." The photos continue with the group of travelers, most of whom are women, posing around the canyon at Powell Memorial and Hermit's rest. The group continued onward to California with an initial stop in Los Angeles at a friend's home. These photos show family and friends posing around the homes of their Californian friends including Dr. and Mrs. Frank B. Fagerburg, a progressive Baptist minister. [HOSTILITIES IN SHANGHAI IN 1932].
1932.. 253 snapshots most held in place by photo corners, 22 black card leaves, 5 are loose. Some photographs and leaves are missing in the early section of the album though fortunately these seem likely to have held more personal images judging by those that immediately follow. The covers of the album missing. One photograph is torn in two but the others are all in good condition. A very interesting album which opens with photographs reflecting European life in China in the 1930s. Domestic scenes, snapshots taken at leisure - on board a yacht, hunting, at the races and while viewing the "Pagodas up Country' etc. Six photographs show the arrival of an aeroplane at the race course and an assembled crowd of people including uniformed servicemen to meet it. What makes this album unusual and particularly interesting are the 145 photographs which show hostilities in Shanghai in 1932. This second part of the album is serious in nature with many photographs of corpses, the bombing of Shanghai from a distance, close up images of devastation caused, fighting in the street, barricades, and other images grimly portrait the city grimly at war. Many of the images were taken within the Shanghai International settlement. .

CHURCHILL, Winston S.)
New York: Edward Steichen, 1932. New York: Edward Steichen,, 1932. Image: 240 x 190 mm; frame: 300 x 250. Framed and glazed in a dark red leather, gilt tooled, desk frame. Reves name and dimensions pencilled on verso of image. In excellent condition. One of the finest portraits of Churchill, captured by the celebrated American photographer Edward Steichen, showing the 57-year-old Churchill seated, smiling, with right hand in jacket pocket. "A critic wrote about the renowned photographer that the 'worldly men of business and politics were invariably presented by Steichen in a setting as static as their own large offices. He could be confident that Churchill, for instance, would only accept the traditional seated figure against a dark background format'" (Max Arthur, Churchill: The Life: An Authorized Pictorial Biography, 2015, p. 155, illustrating a different portrait). The setting may be static but the force of Churchill's personality radiates from this beguiling image, captured in 1932 as a commission for Vanity Fair, while Churchill was on a speaking tour of the United States. A letter from Churchill's private secretary, Violet Pearman, to Emery Reves (dated 16 December 1937) mentions that "the signed photograph was sent to you yesterday, and I hope it reaches you safely" (Martin Gilbert ed., Winston Churchill and Emery Reves: Correspondence 1937-1964, p. 87). It is quite possible that this refers to the present portrait. From the collection of Churchill's literary agent Emery Reves, accompanied by a photograph of Reves with the same portrait (differently framed) on … [Click Below for Full Description]

Urey, H. C. ; Brickweede, F. G. ; Murphy, G. M.
The American Physical Society, Minneapolis, Minnesota. First Edition. 191, [1 blank], 8 pages. 7 x 10 inches. The entire issue of the Physical Review, Vol. 39 #1 (Second Series) January 1, 1932 offered. Publisher's original green printed wrappers. A nice copy with minor browning to the covers at the extremities and some creasing to the rear wrapper. Upper spine corner lightly bumped. Rear wrapper and last nine leaves with closed tear at top edge. Wraps. The article offered here, "A Hydrogen Isotope of Mass 2" is found on page 164-5. It announces the discovery of the deuteron, which we now know as deuterium. "Deuterium (symbol D or 2H, also known as heavy hydrogen) is one of two stable isotopes of hydrogen. The nucleus of deuterium, called a deuteron, contains one proton and one neutron, whereas the far more common hydrogen isotope, protium, has no neutron in the nucleus. Deuterium has a natural abundance in Earth's oceans of about one atom in 6420 of hydrogen." (wiki) Deuterium has important applications in nuclear reactors, NMR Spectroscopy, geology, and a myriad of other areas. A further article was published in the April issue which addressed in considerably more detail the concentration of the newly discovered isotope and why that worked. "Soon after deuterium's discovery, Urey and others produced samples of "heavy water" in which the deuterium had been highly concentrated." "Harold Clayton Urey (April 29, 1893 - January 5, 1981) was an American physical chemist whose pioneering work on isotopes earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1934 for the discovery of deuter … [Click Below for Full Description]
