Devil's Tor by David Lindsay London: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1932. 1st edition, blue cloth variant. Rare. A good copy, with slight soiling of the cloth (see scans). Remnants of dust-wrapper on front and rear pastedowns (see scans), and the binding gutters were reinforced decades ago. A good reading copy of a very rare book. Sphinx by David Lindsay London: John Long, 1923 "Second Edition" slug on title page. Other copies say "Third Edition" but these statements are understood not to indicate new printings but to serve to make the one edition seem that it was selling better than it was. This was a practice of some publishers at the time. A bright copy, with foxing (see the scans of the title and fore-edge). There is a small bump on the outer edge of the rear cover--see scan. A very rare edition of David Lindsay's third novel. His first novel was the classic A Voyage to Arcturus (1920).

Fitzgerald, Zelda
Charles Scribner's Son, New York, 1932. Bound in finely woven green cloth stamped in blue lettering on the front boards and on the spine. There is darkening to the edges of the front boards and a few light stains to the rear boards. The spine is sunned, but the lettering is very clear. The hinges are very good, and the pages are clean and white throughout. With 9 inked stamps from July 14 to Nov. 15 at the top of the left-hand corner of the final endpaper. With "Lasalle & Koch Book Shop" stamped vertically on the rear paste-down. The front panel of the classic dust jacket designed by Cleon, showing spring dancers twirling among flowers at their feet has been pasted down to the front endpaper. The front inside panel has been glued to the front paste-down. Charming indeed to see the Cleon image when opening the book. By the 1930s, Zelda Fitzgerald had already been in and out of psychiatric facilities, and her husband was stalled writing his next work; he had not produced a novel since 1925'sThe Great Gatsby. After an episode ofhysteria, Zelda was admitted to the Phipps Clinic atJohns Hopkins Hospitalin Baltimore on February 12, 1932 for treatment by Dr. Adolf Meyer, an expert onschizophrenia.[1]As part of her recovery routine, she spent at least two hours a day writing.[2]Zelda developed a bond with a young female resident, Dr. Mildred Squires, and toward the end of February she shared an aspect of her novel with Squires, who wrote to Scott that the novel was vivid and had charm.[3]Meanwhile, Scott became worried that Zelda's treatment would consume all his money, so he set a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Queen, Ellery
New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1932. First Edition. Fine/No Dust Jacket. Octavo, 334 pages; publisher's red cloth, printed in black. Map end papers; a fine, straight copy, internally clean and bright, with no markings of any kind. With the footnote on page 326, referencing the rare pamphlet, which the publisher included in "The Greek Coffin Mystery." That footnote follows: "Purchasers of Mr. Ellery Queen's 'The Greek Coffin Mystery' will recall that in its pages was included a little pamphlet entitled 'How to Read the Queen Stories.' In this pamphlet Mr. Queen outlined the identical syllogism which appears above - a little jest of his own which his readers could not have been expected to appreciate fully, since they had no way of knowing that this exercise in logic would be an integral part of the succeeding novel. - The Editor." A facsimile of that pamphlet is included here. A lovely copy, and now quite scarce on the market; none appear in the auction record. [Attributes: First Edition]

James A. Wiley
Philadelphia: Macrae Smith Company. This is a FIRST PRINTING The Art of Mixing by James A. Wiley and Helene M. Griffith 1932! First off I don't usually sell books so I'm not familiar with grading. To me it is in excellent condition with a couple minor marks to the covers, some minor wear to the spine edges, the back of the last page has a small pink spot. The back cover looks like glue is around the edges from when they made it. And there is a small tear on the bottom of a page. I photographed all the damage I could see so please use the photos as better condition grading. There are NO loose pages. Sorry, no international shipping on this item.

Shaw, T.E (Lawrence, T.E.
London: Bruce Rogers, Wilfred Merton & Emery Walker, 1932. A rare opportunity to see a fine copy of this glorious edition of T.E. Lawrence's translation of the Odyssey. Bound in full black leather that is in a fine unmarked condition and contained in a very good cloth covered slipcase. The volume printed on grey paper, watermarked with a Greek galley and printed with aromatic ink that still holds the spicy aroma. The title page and each chapter heading has a roundel of gold leaf printed with a Greek vase design, the printing of these took seven separate impressions and is a wonderful feature of the book. In Joseph Blumenthal's "Bruce Rogers. A Life in Letters," Blumenthal describes this volume; "I believe the Bruce Rogers Odyssey is indisputably amongst the most beautiful books ever produced. It is difficult to describe a work of genius. In the Odyssey without tricks or accessory decoration, with a classic austerity akin to the timeless proportions of the Parthenon, with only type and paper and ink, with consummate skill, Rogers created a masterpiece". Here indeed is a fine copy of this master work, without doubt one of the most handsome volumes in the Lawrence cannon. As an added bonus the Lawrence translation is still most readable, so the volume offered combines printing excellence with a practical and readable text. Limited to 530 copies. A nice copy of this fine landmark volume.. First Edition. Hardback. Fine. Folio - over 12" - 15" Tall. Limited Edition.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
ont> Philippe Gonin : Paris, 1932 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A remarkable and exceptionally scarce handwritten and hand painted work by publisher and artist Philippe Gonin, offering a beautifully bright and detailed excerpt from Faust by Goethe. Very scarce. Collated complete with eleven double sheets (two blank) with calligraphic handwriting, half title, thirty three gouaches on handmade paper, including cover. Initialed by the artist to the final leaf. Disbound as published. Handwritten spine as published. In the original publisher's slipcase. The level of artistry in the work is outstanding, with each verse handwritten in neat calligraphy, accompanied by an extremely bright and pleasing gouache. The illustrations feature some of the play's most well known characters including Mephistopheles, Le Seigneur and Gabriel. The artist, Philippe Gonin, is also the publisher of the work and initialed the work to the final leaf. Gonin also notably illustrated an edition of Le Prisonnier de Chillon'. Whilst that work was stated as having a print run of thirty five copies, further information regarding the print run of this work is unknown. Considering the intricacy of the work, as well as the scarcity of other copies (there are no copies currently held in institutional libraries) we believe the print run to be significantly smaller than this. The work itself is the prologue of Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Faust is considered perhaps the greatest ever German-language play and is regarded to be Goethe's magnum opus. The work deals with Heaven, piety and souls as the protagoni … [Click Below for Full Description]

SHAW, George Bernard. FARLEIGH, John (illustrator).
London, Constable & Company Ltd. 1932. First Edition. Inscribed by Shaw "To Nancy from GBS 1 Dec 1932". A pre-publication inscription - the book did not come out until December 5th. 8vo., original paper covered boards with Farleigh designs. Engraved title page and monochrome illustrations throughout by John Farleigh. A very good copy. With some newspaper clippings loosely inserted at the rear, including one showing a photograph of GBS and Nancy Astor together after a trip they had made together to Russia. George Bernard Shaw and Nancy Lady Astor enjoyed a close friendship for over twenty years, from the late 1920s until Shaw's death in 1950. Although opposites in many matters - particularly politics - Shaw and Astor were irresistibly attracted to each other, both being unconventional firebrands with ready wits. The fact that Shaw inscribed this copy before the book was officially published attests to the closeness of their friendship. [Attributes: First Edition]

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
ont> Philippe Gonin : Paris, 1932. The work deals with Heaven, piety and souls as the protagonist, Faust, signs a deal wit … [Click Below for Full Description]

France: Private, 1932. This auction, or rather fixed price listing, is for a most precious as well as exceedingly rare, privately bound collection of outstanding advertisements for very high end luxury fare in French periodicals from the Christmas seasons of 1928, '29, '30 & '31 respectively. Struchkov, G.
Moskovskii rabochii, Moscow, 1932. 40 pp.: ill. 17x12,5 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Tear near the staple, previous owner's marks, otherwise very good. First and only edition. One of 10 000 copies. This is an interesting work on the effectivity of the atheist publications in the local Red Army periodicals. The atheism was set as one of the key components of the Soviet man's worldview. The period of the 1920s is characterized by relative freedom for atheist organizations. In 1929, a circular "On Measures Strengthening Anti-religious Work" marked the moment when the propaganda had come under direction of the Communist Party. The existed godless editions were declared weak and insufficient for the mass campaign. The situation had reached the crisis point - the printed media had to change the content and style of texts. An atheist journalist G. Struchkov gave the set of guidelines on how the anti-religious publications should be written. He obliged the journalists to observe the activity of each godless organization in the Red Army because even among them was separation to 'the right and left wings'. The 1930s demands to the atheist periodicals became unbearable and made them cease the publication. Not found on Worldcat. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
