Apart from sheer size, the show ranged across Picasso's career from 1900 to the early months of 1932."         Death in the Afternoon

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1932 - Illustrated with frontispiece by Juan Gris and black and white photographs of bullfighting by Vandel and Rodero. First edition, first printing. Publisher's black cloth, with lettering and spine decorations in gilt; in the original pictorial dust jacket featuring Roberto Domingo's illustration of a matador fleeing a bull's wrath, lettered in black. A beautiful copy, with only a touch of faint rubbing to the board edges, else fine; unclipped dust jacket, with a few minor chips to the spine ends and corners, spine very lightly toned, some faint soiling and rubbing to the otherwise bright panels. Overall, a near fine and very sturdy copy. Much nicer than usual. Hanneman A10a. Death in the Afternoon is Hemingway's non-fiction book about the sport of bullfighting, which ranges from technical descriptions of the art of the sport to philosophical conjectures about people who are interested in or partake in bullfighting. Hemingway first became interested in bullfighting after attending the Festival of San Fermínin in Pamplona, Spain in 1923, and became a lifelong aficionado. This technical text is enlivened by Hemingway's clear passion for the sport and keen understanding of its nuances. It is illustrated with reproductions of photographs of Spanish bullfights accompanied by descriptive text. Additionally, Death in the Afternoon contains a reproduction of the 1913 painting The Bullfighter by Juan Gris, whom Hemingway had met while they both lived in Paris in the 1920's; Hemingway had bought this painting along with Gris' 1926 The Guitar Player from the artist in 1931. Although Death in the Afternoon is the author's first full book-length non-fiction piece, Hemingway's love for bullfighting can also be seen in his 1926 novel The Sun Also Rises. Gilt ruled board-edges and elaborate gilt turn-ins, red marbled end-papers, all edges gilt. A fine example.Robert Rivière (1808-1882), bookbinder, was born in London in 1808. On leaving school, in 1824, he apprenticed with Messrs. Allman, the booksellers, of Princes Street, Hanover Square. In 1829 he established himself at Bath as a bookseller, and subsequently as a bookbinder in a small way, employing only one man. But not finding sufficient scope for his talents in that city, he came in 1840 to London, where he commenced business as a bookbinder. The excellent workmanship and good taste displayed in his bindings gradually won for them the appreciation of connoisseurs, and he was largely employed by the Duke of Devonshire, Mr. Christie-Miller, Captain Brooke, and other great collectors. He also bound for the queen and the royal family. In the Great Exhibition of 1851 he exhibited several examples of his skill, and he obtained a medal. The bindings of Rivière, in the quality of the materials, the forwarding, and in the finish and delicacy of the tooling are deserving of almost unqualified commendation. His bindings are wonderful specimens of artistic taste, skill, and perseverance. Rivière bequeathed his business to this son-in-law in 1880, and the name of the firm was changed to Rivière & Son. Bayntun of Bath acquired Rivière c. 1930.

The advance since then can best be indicated by the fact that it is hoped to cover in each hour the distance it took Washington nine days to travel.       Rapid City: Privately printed, [1932]., 1932. First edition. First edition. 8vo. Yellow pictorial wrappers, 12 pp. Six Guns 644 says "Rare." "This little pamphlet was written by a woman who claimed to have known Calamity Jane and it is said that she was in a position to know the "seamy side of [Jane's] character" since she was quite a character herself. But, she is unreliable. Established historical facts make many of the statement in her book highly improbable. Although other writers are just as unreliable regarding Jane's birthplace and the date of her birth, this author makes the claim that Jane was born in Fort Laramie, Wyoming, giving the date as 1860 Jane herself says that she was born in Princeton, Missouri, May 1, 1852. The author also says that Jane was "often called Mary Jane Canary (sic), but this was nothing but a nickname. She liked to sing, but her voice was anything but musical, so they called her Canary after the mules, which were also called Rocky Mountain canaries." Fine, bright copy.

, 1932. 1932. Signed. SCHOENBERG, Arnold. Klavierstueck. (San Francisco: New Music), 1932. Folio (10-1/2 by 14 inches), staple-bound as issued, original yellow paper wrappers; pp. 7. $2000.First edition of Schönberg's final composition for solo piano, inscribed on the first page of the piano score: ""For Mr. James P. Murphy's music collection. Arnold Schoenberg. August 1950.""Schönberg wrote Op. 33b, part of a pair of piano compositions also including Op. 33a (1929) slated for an anthology, ""during a stay in Barcelona. In his Piano Pieces, op. 33, Schönberg makes consistent use of a technique which combines twelve-tone rows, in which two forms of a row can be used at the same time without repeating individual tones. This expanded the number of possibilities for combination while also preserving the conclusiveness of the twelve-tone writing. The relatively short duration and unity of the pieces are reminiscent of romantic forms: the ""Intermezzi"" by Johannes Brahms, for instance, whom Schönberg greatly esteemed. The first piece in op. 33 has a rather impulsive and brilliant character, the second is restrained, more lyrical. A closer formal examination of the work clearly reveals the traditional origin of its elements. For example, op. 33a begins with a theme that consists of six chords; after a transitional passage this theme is played a second time one octave higher. A brief linking section is followed by the second theme, distinguished by a melody in the bass and a characteristic model of accompaniment. After the melody is repeated in the treble, a short developmental section begins, followed by a recapitulation in which the first theme can be heard in broken chords. The condensed sonata form is easily recognisable from the combination of two themes, a kind of elaboration and the recapitulation. Schönberg's op. 33b is structured according to altogether similar principles, although here the second theme appears before the first in the recapitulation. His final compositions for solo piano demonstrate his endeavours to fit new musical ideas into traditional contexts"" (Arthur Schoenberg Center, Vienna). Promotional sheet for New Music Edition Orchestra Series with subscription clip-off laid in.Mild toning to wrappers. A near-fine copy.

Quantum Theory of Radiation." Lectures Delivered on the Symposium for Theoretical Physics during the Summer Session of 1930 at the University of Michigan. Reprinted from Reviews of Modern Physics, Vol. 4, no. 1, January 1932, pp. 87-132.

1932 - Original wrappers, recently rebacked with new paper spine. Pages 120-21 very browned (from acidic piece of paper left between them). Signature of M. Dresden on front wrapper. Preserved in a cloth folding case. First Separate Edition. "Attempts to build up a relativistic quantum theory of matter and fields, based on the pioneering contributions of Jordan and Dirac, were made by a small but growing number of physicists. The majority showed little interest in the field, which seemed quite frightening because of its conceptual difficulties and mathematical complexity. Quantum electrodynamics was for some years a rather mysterious theory that was only understood by a few specialists. This situation remained until Fermi published an extensive review of the theory in 1932 [offered here], presenting it in a clear and pedagogical way that made it accessible to a larger part of the physics community" (Kragh, Dirac, p. 127). "Fermi visited the United States for the first time during the summer of 1930. Rasetti had been in Pasadena in 1929 and on his return to Rome had filled our heads with the wonders of California. . . . It is possible that Rasetti's enthusiasm influenced Fermi. At any rate, when the University of Michigan invited him to teach theoretical physics at a summer session, he accepted happily. He found two old friends, Uhlenbeck and Goudsmit, the discoverers of the electron spin, who had moved from their native Holland to Ann Arbor. . . . Ehrenfest joined the group for the summer, and the atmosphere was most congenial. Fermi lectured on the quantum theory of radiation and explained that rather new and difficult subject very beautifully. The visit to Ann Arbor was a great success scientifically and was a pleasant interlude for Fermi--so much so that he became one of the most frequent attendants of the summer school there, returning in 1933 and 1935. Through these visits he came to like America and to appreciate the opportunities it offered. . . . These considerations prepared him to emigrate, and when the time came, the decision was more the fulfillment of a long nurtured plan than an emergency escape" (Segrè, Enrico Fermi, p. 63). "The impact of the summer symposia at Ann Arbor on the growth of theoretical physics in America deserves special attention. . . . Of particular interest for the spreading of quantum field theory were Fermi's 1930 lectures on quantum electrodynamics which, edited by Uhlenbeck, were published soon thereafter [offered here]. Fermi's exposé made this new subject clear to a wider audience especially because it contained numerous applications. According to Uhlenbeck, Fermi had prepared himself for lecturing in English by taking a course at a Berlitz school in Rome, thus acquiring fluency which, however, was not quite accent-free" (Pais, Inward Bound, p.366). Enrico Fermi was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1938, "for his demonstrations of the existence of new radioactive elements produced by neutron irradiation, and for his related discovery of nuclear reactions brought about by slow electrons."
