Lexika: AKL. KLS. SKL. Vollmer. KLS Künstlerlexikon der Schweiz.         THE CHINESE GIRL.

      - Tientsin 1932. Red cloth, very good, 108p. English text many b.w. collotype photos of Chinese girls, translated from the the Russian by E.De Laberbis, 18 x 24.5 cm., minor detent to title page.FIRST & ONLY EDITION EXCEPTIONALLY RARE & OBSCURE This great work is devoted to the Chinese girl; the various types are explained by the author. He had much experience with "sing-song" dancers, "entertainers" & others most whom were disguised prostitutes. This work basically is a photographic essay with accompanying text. Each girl "type" is discussed, showing her photograph, with her traits and attributes. This book covers the intricate phase of Chinese social life, hitherto not set down into writing, customs, habits, the live of "sing-song" girls, how they are in North China, Tientsin, Peking, Shanghai, Hong Kong, descriptions correct in every detail based on the author's personal private and very personal primary observation. * These girls found work in cabarets, some were called "dancers, actress, entertainers, circus performers, dramatic artists, popular ballet & dancing girls" as well as movie starlets, high & low class prostitutes and were "companions" to foreigners. * Considered social outcasts, they were banned from respect- able Chinese society. Due to overwhelming Western influences and changes taking place in Chine in addition to the profuse number of very willing foreign men, the swelling ranks of "professional" women flourished during the hay day of night life in 1920-30's China. * Many of these women were stunningly beautiful and charming. They were fashionable and wore marvelous clothes and jewelry most of which were gifts from their appreciative clients. The were knock outs and they were in great demand ! * A most fascinating and very RARE primary study of the "pleasure girls" of China. The title page shows [Mr. Grin] editor of the Russian Daily "Nasha Zaria" next to the author's name, a play on words, a pun. * RARITY: This obscure and R A R E work was copyright by and printed for the author, and was not distributed by the usual sources due to the "indiscreet" nature of the subject. The book was rather and more likely simply given out to the author ' s cronies and partners in crime. This obscure gem is truly seldom found for sale on the market and is always rare. *

TRIBĪNE [The Tribune]. Revolucionārās kultūras žurnāls [Revolutionary Cultural Journal]. 2nd year, no. 4 (Aug. 1932). Lino-cut cover design and frontispiece with photomontage by Ernest Kāļis. Rīga: 1932.

TRIBĪNE [The Tribune]. Revolucionārās kultūras žurnāls [Revolutionary Cultural Journal]. Edited by Jānis Bušs. 2nd year, no. 4 (Aug. 1932). Lino-cut cover design and frontispiece with photomontage by Ernest Kāļis. Rīga: Latvju Kultura 1932. 15,3:23 cm. 47 [1] pp. Original stapled publisher's wrapper with black linocut cover illustration and title on cream stock. Issue no. 4 of this 2nd year of »Tribīne«, one of the most influential Latvian communist avant-garde magazines. »Tribīne« was published between 1931 and 1933 in a total of 12 issues (1st year: nos. 1-4, 5/6; 2nd year: nos. 1-4; 3rd year, no. 1-2). The magazine was repeatedly confiscated, it's first chief editor, Jānis Bušs, went to prison. Preceded issue contains text contributions by Linards Lāicens, Emīls Fross and Pēteris Zars. Other authors were signing with monograms, pseudonyms or not at all, to prevent troubles with the authorities. Alongside the confiscation of the latest two issues in July 1933, publisher Lāicens had to flee Latvia and settled in the Soviet Union, where he felt prey to the Stalinist political cleansing in 1938. As far as illustrations are concerned, this volume contains a striking title-page showing a photomontage by Latvian and Soviet avant-garde artist Ernest Kāļis. Kāļis also designed the cover of all issues of »Tribīne« (except year 3, nos. 1 and 2) and his striking constructivist lino-cut transports a clear but nevertheless autonomous reference to Lajos Kassák's »Bildarchitektur«. Paper time-stained, front cover and first 3 leafs with one small tear, otherwise fine copy of this fragile and particularly rare magazine. OCLC and KVK show no holdings of this issue worldwide, though there is one in possession of the Latvian national library. MOMA, The Frick Art Reference Libary (New York) and Waseda UL only have copies of issues nos. 1 and 2 (1931) and/or 2,3 and 5/6 (1932). Fraser: Publishing and Book Design in Latvia 1919-1940, 2014, p. 126f.

BIBLIOTECA BACCHICA BIBLIOGRAPHIE RAISONNÉE DES OUVRAGES IMPRIMÉS AVANT 1800 ET ILLUSTRANT LA SOIF HUMAINE SOUS TOUS SES ASPECTS, CHEZ TOUS LES PEUPLES ET DANS TOUS LES TEMPS ... TOME I INCUNABLES [with:] TOME II SEIZIÈME SIÈCLE

London & Paris: Maggs Brothers, 1932. Two volumes. Quarto. Cloth and boards, untrimmed. Illustrations and facsimiles. Boards a bit edgeworn and smudged, some faint splashmarks to spines, tiny snag at crown of one spine, bookplates and ownership stamp (see below), a good set, internally very good. First editions, limited to 250 and 275 numbered copies respectively. A charming association copy, inscribed on the free endsheet of the first volume: "O. Madox Hueffer Hommage amical André L. Simon." The recipient, Oliver Madox Hueffer (1876-1931), was himself a productive novelist and journalist, although he has been largely overshadowed by his better known older brother. According to his biographer, on 21 June 1931, after "an exceptionally good dinner" (wine choice unreported), Hueffer is said to have exclaimed "I've never felt better in my life," and died of a heart attack, aged fifty-four. The first volume subsequently rested for awhile with the Polish Naval Association, London, with their stamp on the front pastedown, and then migrated to the reference library of London bookselling firm, Francis Edwards Ltd, where it joined the second volume and had inserted their bookplate in each volume (noted as "Not for Sale" but sold with the substantial portion of the Edwards reference library by Maggs Bros ca 1985). A key work from the period of the first blush of wine bibliography, by its long dominant figure. GABLER G38730.

Nemenikuće. Ćirilo i metodije [Nemenikuće. Kyrill und Method]

VUČO, Aleksandar: Nemenikuće. Ćirilo i metodije [Nemenikuće. Kyrill und Method]. Beograd: Nadrealistička izdanja [Surrealistischer Verlag] (Narodnoj Stampariji [Staatsdruckerei]) 1932, 33, [3] Seiten. Gr. 4° (20,44 x 27,2 cm). Avtomati. Neverojatni razkazi [Automats (or) Machine guns. Incredible stories]

      T. F. Chipev, Sofia 1932 - Original publisher's wrappers, 12mo - 175/125mm., 110+2 p. The book contents five science fiction stories from Svetoslav Minkov, called "the father of Bulgarian science fiction". The title of the book is game of words - in Bulgarian "Avtomati" means Automats or Machines, but machine guns too. The main theme in Minkov's stories from this period is the human who becomes a machine, a soulless robot. This transformation is equal to death. The cover of Sirak Skitnik speaks itself. The letter "B" (equal to "V" in Bulgarian) constructed as a domino mask symbolize this transformation. The "T" letter is constructed as butt of a machine gun and "O" as a muzzle aimed straight at us. You will be death, speaks this cover. Sirak Skitnik (Panayot Todorov). Orphan Wanderer is English translation of this pseudonym. Sirak Skitnik is Born on November 22, 1883 graduated from theological school in Sofia (1902). In 1908 he moved to Petersburg, where he studied painting at the private school of Leon Bakst (classmate of Marc Chagall and Wassily Kandinsky). Member of the group "Mir iskusstva" which in the late 19th century and early 20th century a center of Russian artistic avant-garde. Acquainted with modern trends in European art experiences influence of decorative Petersburg school (Nicholas Roerich, Ivan Bilibin, Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin). About this copy. It's very good + at all. Fresh and bright paper and colors, the spine is strong and clean. It would be almost perfect, But - slightly uneven outlines and inscription of ex-owner on the title page (see the pictures). (See Domenico Jacono, Bulgarian modernism, books and magazines 1919-1934, N 37, p.47). The copy isn't even touched by any restorations. The pictures shows real colors etc. Our images aren't splendid, but are true. We stay available for any question and extra pictures on request. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Black Mischief.

London Chapman & Hall 1932 - First edition, one of the limited issue, number 183 of 250 large paper copies signed by the author, large 8vo., plates and illustrations by the Author not included in the trade edition, original mauve cloth, fading to spine and margins of boards, printed dust-jacket, spine slightly darkened, some very minor fraying to head and tail of spine, but a near-fine example overall, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, preserved in custom-made slip-case. Seemingly a difficult edition to find in the dust-jacket and in such good condition. Waugh's third novel, helped to establish his reputation as a master satirist. Set on the fictional African island of Azania, the novel chronicles the efforts of Emperor Seth, assisted by the Englishman Basil Seal, to modernise his kingdom, including the issue of home-made currency and the staging of a 'Birth Control Gala'. Written by Waugh whilst staying at Madresfield Court, Worcestershire as the guest of the Lygon sisters, who after 1931 had the run of the place (their father, William Lygon, 7th Earl Beauchamp, having been forced into exile under threat of prosecution for his homosexuality) and posed for some of the drawings Waugh drew for this limited edition. Contract 14-1/2 x 9 inches. Contract attached to a light blue back cover. Very good. Signed in red ink Katharine Hepburn, in blue ink Leland Hayward and Frank Joyce and in black ink Myron Selznick and initialed by all four as well. TOGETHER WITH: supporting documents including two typescript letters on blue Leland Hayward stationery to Miss Hepburn's father, one signed in blue ink Katharine Hepburn and in red ink Leland Hayward; three additional typescript letters regarding the contract, one from Miss Hepburn's father to Hayward, two on American Play Company stationery; and a typescript list of the artists, writers and directors represented by the American Play Company. Contract 14-1/2 x 9 inches. Hepburn's signed contract with her first Hollywood agent. Leland Hayward discovered Katharine Hepburn while playing the part of an Amazon queen in The Warrior's Husband at the Morosco Theater in New York City. Hayward felt Miss Hepburn had a star quality and after much pursuing and negotiating, she agreed to be represented. Anne Edwards, in her 1986 biography of Hepburn, tells the story of what happened next: "[Hayward] talked to Paramount Studios about [Hepburn] and they made a small offer for her services. Kate turned them down. From childhood she had loved films. But to go to Hollywood as a mere starlet, a contract player, would never do. She insisted Leland Hayward set fifteen hundred dollars a week as her price, believing a studio would not be likely to pay such a price for a relative beginner unless they intended to make that person an important player. R.K.O. picked up the bait and asked her to take a screen test ... As fate would have it, David O. Selznick was struggling with the casting of the film version of Clemence Dane's "A Bill of Divorcement" ... Hayward got word of the problem and convinced [director George] Cukor to see Kate's test. Cukor was stunned ... 'She'll be greater than Garbo' ... On June 30, [Hepburn] received a telegram from Leland Hayward telling her that not only would R.K.O. meet her fifteen-hundred-dollar-a-week demand, she was to leave for California on Sunday to appear opposite John Barrymore..." (Katharine Hepburn: A Remarkable Woman pp 78-80). Hepburn and Hayward soon after began an affair that would last four years-- the first of many for both. Provenance: The Estate of Katharine Hepburn

2nd issue (of 3) of the most important review of Serbian surrealism

NADREALIZAM DANAS I OVDE [Surrealism Now and Here]. Year 2, no. 2 (January 1932). With four photographic plates containing repros of 12 works as well as enclosed advertising flysheet. Beograd: Nadrealistička izdanja [Surrealist Publishing House] (Narodnoj Stampariji [State Printing House]) 1932. 4° (29,3 x 21,2 cm). 48 pp., 4 leafs. Original publisher's wrapper with multicolour typographic cover title and front flap (magazine). 17 x 11,2 cm. Flysheet with red colouring and black typographic printing on front side. 2nd issue (of 3) of this most important review of Serbian surrealism. Preceding no. is focussed on "autokritika" (self-criticism); due to the increasing internal struggles between the aesthetic and political tendencies of Serbian surrealism explicit artistic and theoretical positioning and justification is performed in numerous texts by the leading proponents of the movement: Aleksandar Vučo, Vane Bor, Radojica Živanović-Noe, Djordje Jovanović, Djordje Kostić, Koča Popović, Petar Popović and, of course, Marko Ristić; elsewhere a comparable manifest-like concentration of the group only appeared in the almanac "Nemoguće (The Impossilbe, 1930). No. 2 of NDIO furthermore has special importance as far as proving international relations of the Serbian avant-gardes is concerned. It contains a number of foreign contributions, particularly by French surrealists: poems and prose-writings by André Breton, René Char, René Crevel, Paul Éluard and Tristan Tzara. - The illustrated part consists of bound-in 4 plates on high-glossy paper with b/w, full-paged reproductions of two paintings by Salvador Dali (»Peinture« (or later »Tour du plaisir or Vertige«) and »Guillaume Tell«), a sculpture of Alberto Giacometti (»Objet embarrassant à poser«) and Yves Tanguy's painting »Les belles manières« sharing a page, furthermore two full-paged repros of drawings by Max Ernst ("Portrait") and Živanović-Noe (»Uspomena« [The Memento]), and finally 3 photographs and 3 further illustrations. All contributions are originally created for this issue, the original French manuscripts or typescripts were sent to Belgrade for this reason. All reproductions of paintings and drawings, except Dali's »Guillaume Tell«, are based on original photographs especially made on this occasion. To resume NDIO no. 2 "...inaugure et marque cette dernière année du mouvement surréaliste serbe, et en est l'expression la plus authentique. Il relève d'une préparation beaucoup plus poussée, même quantitativement il est beaucoup plus volumineux que le premier (...) et il suffit de le consulter pour se rendre compte assez nettement des problèmes du surréalisme belgradois de cette dernière année de son existence." - Enclosed is a red flysheet announcing the publication of no. 2 of NDIO. - Rear side of cover with publisher's advertisement listing Serbian surrealist publications since 1922. Le Fonds Paul Destribats, no. 317; Biro/Passeron, p. 296; cit.: Kapidzic-Osmanagic, Hanifa: Le surréalisme serbe. Paris 1968, p. 212; Todić, Milanka: Surrealism Here and Now. In: Nadralizam danas i ovde. Reprint. Belgrade: 2002, appendix to issue no. 1. Front and bottom of spine very slightly torn, paper occasionally slightly foxy, and time stained, the rear side of the flysheet time-stained, otherwise fine copy of this magazine and ephemera, hard to find in any issue and condition.

        Voluptes de Paris.

Paris Paris-Publications 1932 - First edition. 4to., 48pp., full-page photographic illustrations by Brassai, original orange wrappers lettered in white, spiral binding renewed else an excellent bright example. "Brassai's nocturnal vision of Paris is so well known, and his book Paris de nuit has been so influential (.). Some of his more edgy work was published in 1932 in a book entitled Voluptes de Paris (Pleasures of Paris), but contractual disagreements meant that Brassai never acknowledged it. Paris de nuit, the book that actually made his reputation, is relatively chaste by comparison, since it contains the images that were deemed publicly palatable" (Parr & Badger).         Ulysses [Definitive Standard Edition]

Hamburg / Paris / Bologna: Odyssey Press, 1932. First Impression of the "most accurate and authoritative text of Ulysses," complete in two volumes (Slocum & Cahoon). Small 8vo: 400,[2]; [2],401-792,[2]pp. Stiff grey wrappers printed in reddish brown; priced in marks (5.60, francs (36.00), and lire (28.00). Also printed in a thin-paper one-volume edition and in a slightly taller special edition of only 35 copies. About Fine, both spines slightly toned, top edges lightly dust-soiled. Connolly 42. Slocum & Cahoon 20. ¶ Soon after moving to Paris, in 1927, "when strolling past Shakespeare and Company, the bookshop founded by Sylvia Beach on the rue de l'Odéon, [Stuart Gilbert's] life changed permanently. The window display included some pages from Ulysses, in a French translation by Auguste Morel and Valéry Larbaud, in which Gilbert noticed a number of errors and interpolations. Beach recommended that Gilbert leave his contact details and said that Joyce would contact him. Joyce did, and a lifelong collaboration ensued, leading not only to Gilbert becoming a literary translator . . . but to the publication of Gilbert's seminal work James Joyce's Ulysses: a Study, in 1930," and, in 1932, this definitive edition of the text.         Eyewitness; Being Personal Reminiscences of Certain Phases of the Great War, including the Genesis of the Tank

London: Hodder & Stoughton,, 1932. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles gilt to the spine, narrow enamelled bands in the Tank Corps colours of brown, red and green to head and tail of the spine and front cover, illustrated maps to pastedowns. Portrait frontispiece, 9 plates and folding diagram. Minor rubbing to spine ends, top edge dust toned; an excellent, bright copy. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "To Stephen Foot in memory of 1914–18 from the author E. D. Swinton Feb. 1939". Swinton (1868–1951) was appointed by Kitchener in September 1914 as the official war correspondent for the British Army, under the pseudonym "Eyewitness". Swinton claims in this work to have sparked the creation of the tank; "Swinton's claim to be the originator of the tank is problematic, however ... Swinton made no contribution to overcoming technical problems in the development of the tank, although he provided early plans for how caterpillar tractors might be employed ... and coined the euphemism 'tank'" (ODNB). He accepted the role of colonel-commandant of the Royal Tank Corps in 1934. The recipient, Major Stephen Foot (1887–1966), served for three years on the Western Front in the Great War as one of the Reserve of Officers with the Royal Engineers at the Somme, then transferred as a Brigade-Major to the 2nd Tank Brigade, where "my own job was to follow up the tanks and find out from the infantry what they really thought about the way the tanks did their job". In January 1918, during a period of leave in England, he transferred to a staff post in the Tank Directorate at the War Office, writing a paper on A Mobile Army in April 1918, which advocated replacing horses with mechanised caterpillar tractors, which he reprinted in his autobiography Three Lives, published in 1934.

München, Verlag Franz Eher Nachf., GmbH, 1932 - Vollständige Ausgabe im original Verlagseinband (Steifumschlag / Broschur / Kartoneinband 8vo im Format 14 x 22 cm) mit illustriertem Deckeltitel. 208 Seiten, Schrift: Fraktur. Heft 24 der Reihe "Nationalsozialistische Bibliothek", Herausgeber: Gottfried Feder. - Aus dem Inhalt: Germanische Frühzeit - Das fränkische Reich - Das Deutsche Reich (bis zum Interregnum) - Deutschland unter Wahlkönigen - Zeitalter der Reformation - Aufstieg Brandenburg-Preußens - Preußens Fall und Erhebung - Kampf um die deutsche Einheit - Das Deutsche Reich (Entwicklung bis 1888 / Wilhelm II. / Der Weltkrieg / Ausblick) - Schluss - Register. - Mit zeittypischen Ausführungen wie z.B.: ". . - 2.         Now We Are Six

A superb find of a very good/near fine book with a dust jacket plus some unique ephemera. In addition the book comes in a fine custom made slip case. The book includes a note signed on the same day by A. A. Milne and H. G. Wells with a poem referring to the book. A. A. Milne's poem reads: "Whatever Heavens these be, of Hells, I know the worst by now, For I was taught by H. G. Wells, and how.. and how.. and how!" dated 7. x. 32. On the opposite page of the card is a note from H. G. Wells saying: "When Alan was six, I was Nix" dated and signed 7.x.32. plus "When John was along, Just not so fondly!". Wells has also doodled two pictures, one of a sheep commenting, "This is not a sheep". On the reverse of the card are three other signatures dated 1932. The hinges of the book are a little frail. The spine of the original red boards has slightly bumped edges. Pictorial end papers. Bright gilt top edge. The dust jacket has chips on the spine ends. A lovely bright copy. 8vo 103 printed pages.

The King of the Golden River

London: George Harrap & Co. Ltd, 1932. Limited Edition. Limp vellum. Fine/very good +. Rackham, Arthur. No. 131 of 550 copies, 8vo - over 7.75" to 9.75" tall, 48 pp., Signed by Illustrator(s). A perfect convergence of "one of the earliest English examples of a fantasy written specifically for a child" (which may have had a direct effect upon George MacDonald and, subsequently, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien) written by the truly brilliant writer John Ruskin (1819-1900), author, art critic, and social thinker; being wonderfully illustrated by the unparalleled Arthur Rackham (1867-1939), whose "imaginative eye saw all forms with the eyes of childhood and created a world that was half reassuring and half frightening" (N.B., quotes from Carpenter, "The Oxford Companion to Children's Literature", p. 294 and Houfe, "The Dictionary of 19 Century British Book Illustrators", p. 268). Ruskin wrote the story for the then twelve-year old Effie Gray, later to become his wife, who challenged her friend Mr. Ruskin to write a fairy story, as it was "the least likely task for him to fulfill" - he fulfilled it wonderfully, and the story has remained a favourite with children ever since. With four full-page illustrations in full colour and fifteen drawings in black and white by Arthur Rackham, this copy housed in the original publisher's slipcase (with the limitation number matching that in the volume), with a white paper dust jacket. ***DESCRIPTION: Full limp vellum, gold lettering on the front, top edge gilt, fore- and bottom edges uncut, green pictorial endpapers, limitation statement on the verso of the half-title page, this volume no. 131 of 550 copies (plus 20 not for sale), signed by Arthur Rackham, frontispiece one of the four colour illustrations, title page in red and black with vignette in the same colours, the black and white drawings scattered through the text; octavo size (approximately 9" tall), pagination: (1)-48. The volume came to us with a plain white paper dust jacket (N.B., Riall mentions a "glassine" jacket, we have not been able to confirm if this is the original, albeit a variant, jacket or was supplied by a prior owner), and is housed in the publisher's plain original slipcase, with a paper spine label with brown lettering giving the title and illustrator, with the limitation number of 131 hand-written onto the label. ***CONDITION: Volume is fine overall, the vellum binding is clean other than some light, stray dustiness and a hint of sunning to the spine, the corners are straight and unrubbed, the text block is strong and the hinges solid, the interior pages are clean and bright with light foxing only to the endpapers, and it is free of prior owner markings. The dust jacket is very good with minor overall wear (no rips or tears), it is foxed particularly around the spine, with half-circles of soiling where the slipcase has a half-circle cut out; the slipcase is also very good, we had a professional restore some minor splits to the case and it is now strong and sturdy, but does have some overall soiling and what appears to be an old piece of cello tape partially over the paper spine label. ***CITATIONS: Riall p. 176, Latimore & Haskell p. 67. ***POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply, please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Le Statut de Kalisz [The Statute of Kalisz].

Paris Table Ronde 1932 - Folio, 380 x 320 mm. Text in French, Polish, English, Hebrew, Yiddish, German, Italian and Spanish. 44 full-colour facsimile leaves (only, of 45, but with 2 duplicates [see note above]), heightened in silver & gold, each printed on one side of toned sheets; lacking the printed nomination and limitation ff.; original burgundy morocco with publisher's gilt and embossed medallion on front cover. Fine example of this scarce work, published in a limited edition of 500 copies. Considered to be one of Szyk's greatest creations, The Statute of Kalisz explores a significant event in Polish history in which Jews were granted civil and religious privileges commencing with the 13th century. In this work Szyk also emphasised the contributions which Jews had made to Polish society and the mutual and beneficial relationship which existed between Poles and Jews for centuries. This work must be viewed in context of Szyk's lifelong efforts to combat prejudice and especially anti-Semitism through his art as well as through direct political activism. This context of the May 1924 coup in Poland should also be considered. Szyk believed that Joseph Pilsudski, the coup's leader, was Poland's only hope for true democracy, while current government would often officially sanction anti-Semitism. Szyk chose The Statue of Kalisz as his subject, as this was a historical precedent for fair treatment of Jews by the Polish government. The work shows scenes demonstrating mutually beneficial cooperation between Poles and Jews spreading over a period of nine centuries. This project was the first time Szyk acted simultaneously as scribe, calligrapher and illustrator. Szyk often looked to medieval illuminated manuscripts for inspiration for his dense colourful imagery. The work includes elaborately illustrated translations of the original Latin text of the laws to French, Polish, English, Hebrew, Yiddish, German, Italian and Spanish - each on separate page. This particular copy is somewhat anomalous, at least when compared to the few copies that have come up at auction: there are two duplicated colour sheets (sheets 8 & 15 of the Latin & French double-column translation) present and one colour sheet, commencing 'Jus Polonicum Jura Judaeis.', absent here; neither the printed nomination or limitation leaf have been bound in, and all the colour sheets have been mounted onto stubs and sewn into the publisher's original binding, rather than loose as normally presented. Soon after moving to Paris, in 1927, "when strolling past Shakespeare and Company, the bookshop founded by Sylvia Beach on the rue de l'Odéon, [Stuart Gilbert's] life changed permanently. THE CHINESE GIRL.

Tientsin 1932. * .

The International Style: Architecture Since 1922

W.W. Norton and Company. Hardcover. New York, 1932. 8vo, cloth with jacket, unpaginated. A very nice copy of this landmark architecture title in the scarce dustjacket. The book is near fine with some very light normal age-related wear and faint creases to the first few leaves at upper corner, as well as a tiny ink mark on front free endpaper that looks like the remnants of an old price. The jacket is very good minus with a triangular chip of nearly an inch at top of spine, some small chips and a a line written in ink on head of spine. Remains quite attractive. "Hitchcock is best known as the historian of modernism. His collaboration with Philip Johnson on Modern Architecture: International Exhibition, held at the Museum of Modern Art in 1932, and the accompanying catalog, The International Style: Architecture since 1922 (1932), made him the preeminent advocate of modernism in architecture in America. The exhibition and the book presented the previous decade of architecture in Europe, the United States, and Japan as embodying an international movement that had cast aside what the collaborators viewed as the falsehood of much nineteenth-century architecture. The already existing, coherent style of architecture that Johnson and Hitchcock claimed to have recognized was simplified in the catalog's introduction by Alfred H. Barr, Jr., as an emphasis on volume over mass, regularity as opposed to symmetry, dependence on the intrinsic qualities of materials, the use of fine proportions, and a rejection of applied ornament." - ANB.         Postcard Handwritten by Crane

      - THE SECOND AND MORE IMPORTANT POSTCARD WRITTEN ON JANUARY 27, 1932. A very important postcard from "Harold" Hart Crane to Ethel Clark, sent from Taxco, January 27, 1932, regarding his ringing of the bells. Postcard with a postmark of January 27, 1932 mailed from Taxco, containing a twenty-centavos air mail stamp, addressed to Ethel Clark, Box 604, in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Estados-Unidos. In Crane’s hand: "Have just been up, at dawn, and rang the bells, --or helped to—in the towers of this old church here. And set off rockets, too. Love, Harold." The front of the card is a photographic view of an architectural detail in the stonework of what is presumed to be the Church of Santa Prisca in Taxco. Mexico. Standing by the stonework is a young boy whose raised hand rests on the stonework. The caption of the photo reads in part: "Balcon del Campanario, Taxco, Mx." The reverse of the card was re-produced on the rear cover of Vol, II, No. 2 of the Hart Crane Newsletter. This issue of the HCN contains (on pp. 6-10) Vivian Pemberton's essay, "The Composition of 'The Broken Tower,'" explaining the connection between the ringing of the bells mentioned in this postcard and the writing of the poem. This is the second of the two postcards which were sent by Crane to family members on the same day. Vivian Pemberton feels that this postcard is the more important of the two since it mentions his ringing of the bells. Crane usually signed his letters to family members as "Harold." In fine condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
