        The Disappearing City

New York: William Farquhar Payson New York: William Farquhar Payson. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT TO HIS SON: "Here Lloyd -- take this -- Father". "The principles set forth in The Disappearing City--Wright's advocacy of creating cities built to human scale, of planning the open spaces, making possible both community places and truly private places, of decentralizing the structure of our civilization--found their most thoughtful expression in his Broadacre City, an idea that grew from the 1932 book into a highly influential theory of city planning--and a radical critique, not only of the unhealthy, unwieldy American city but of his European contemporaries' coldly rational urban warehouses for humans" (Fowler, Frank Lloyd Wright: Graphic Artist).Provenance: Given by Frank Lloyd Wright to his eldest son, Frank Lloyd Wright, Jr., commonly known as "Lloyd". Lloyd Wright was a noted architect in his own right, working mostly in Southern California.New York: William Farquhar Payson, 1932. Quarto, original decorated green cloth, original dust jacket; custom half-leather box. Inscribed in ink by Wright on the front free endpaper. Book near-fine with offsetting from tipped-in newspaper article on rear endpapers and toning on front pastedown; extremely rare dust jacket (usually lacking) with soiling, tape repairs, and splits at folds. An outstanding association copy of one of Wright's most influential works.

        Danseuses bois graves

Paris: La Presse a Bras, 1932. Paris: La Presse a Bras, 1932. Maillol, Gaspard. Danseuses bois graves. Pref. de Jane Hugard. Paris: La Presse a Bras, 1932. No. 41 of 100 copies, signed by the artist. Folio. (19 1/4 x 14 1/4"). Original wrappers, loose text and sheets in portfolio. 8pp. text with ornaments, plus twelve original, full page woodcuts by Maillol, printed on fine, hand made Montval paper (a type of paper developed by Maillol himself-see below). Inscribed by the author on t.p. verso (dated 1933). Fine copy with slight soiling to wrappers. The twelve simple woodcuts, when compared to the fluid dance lithographs of his uncle Aristide, are simple and direct, reminiscent of medieval cuts or drawings for children. Gaspard Maillol's interest in dance is also related to his uncle. Aristide found in Serge Lifar the model with the perfect form for dance, even before Lifar began his celebrated career. Jane Hugard wrote the introduction to this album. Hugard was both a dancer at the Paris opera and a choreographer. She is credited with developing the choreography for a production of Ravel's Ma Mere l'Oye* at the Theatre des Arts in 1913. Gaspard Maillol (nephew of Aristide Maillol) was born in Barcelona in 1880. When his uncle, the sculptor Aristide Maillol, could not find suitable hand made paper for his planned illustrated book Poems of Virgil (translated by Marc Lafargue and published by Count Harry Kessler of the Cranach Press), he asked his nephew Gaspard, an artistic young man from Toulouse to help him perfect a paper suitable for his publishing and artistic requirements. The project developed with the aid of Count Kessler, who invested in the necessary equipment for a mill. The finished product, finely ground from hemp, linen, and even cocoons of silk, had "the surface of a plastered wall," according to the sculptor. Named "Velin de Montval," because the mill was on the road from Marly to Montval, it quickly became one of the most highly regarded papers in France. The watermark of a nude with ribbon was designed by the Gaspard's uncle Aristide Maillol. By the 1930s, the mill was producing a range of papers primarily for printmaking and special edition book production. These were adopted as drawing papers by artists such as Picasso, as well as Maillol's friend Matisse. Painter, watercolorist, sculptor, and papermaker, Gaspard died around 1946 in Vidalon les Annonay (?). *Ravel originally wrote Ma Mere l'Oye as a piano duet for the Godebski children, Mimi and Jean (aged 6 and 7). Ravel dedicated this work for four hands to the children (just as he had dedicated an earlier work, Sonatine, to their parents). Jeanne Leleu and Genevieve Durony premiered the work. The piece was transcribed for solo piano by Ravel's friend Jacques Charlot the same year it was published (1910).         Experimental Television

Boston: Lothrop, Lee & Shepard Co., 1932. Boston: Lothrop, Lee & Shepard Co.,, 1932. A Series of Simple Experiments with Television Apparatus also How to Make a Complete Home Television Transmitter and Television Receiver. With One Hundred and Eighty-Five Text Illustrations and Diagrams by the Author. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles and Art Deco pictorial design to upper board in black. With the dust jacket. Frontispiece, diagrams throughout the text. Minor bumps to corners and edge of upper board, very lightly rubbed at extremities, some loss of size from cloth on the spine but overall cloth fresh, contents mildly toned. An excellent copy in the rubbed and dulled jacket that is lacking the front flap and has a tanned spine panel, some nicks and short closed tears repaired with tape on the verso, and an abrasion to the upper panel. First edition, first printing of this attractive and copiously illustrated practical work on television engineering, uncommon in the dust jacket. Television only became a viable technology during the second half of the 1920s, with the first experimental television station opening in 1928. It did not come to wide public consciousness until its demonstration at the 1939 World's Fair, making this a particularly early textbook for the in-the-know hobbyist. Author Archie Frederick Collins (1869-1952) was a pioneering experimenter with wireless and radio technology and a prolific author, writing pieces on science and engineering for magazines such as Scientific American as well as encyclopaedias and technical journals, and publishing several hundred books over the course of his career. His volumes on experimental science for young people were very popular, and the Nobel Prize-winning chemist Alan MacDiarmid recalled that he kept The Boy Chemist (first published in 1924) out of the library for a year in order to complete all the experiments it contained.
