Festschrift published to mark the 60th birthday of Emanuel Libman, founder of the cardiology department at New York&#39;s Mount Sinai Hospital, and a legendary diagnostician and teacher. Libman is associated with Libman-Sachs syndrome, a type of endocarditis. The festschrift contains contributions from 147 of Libman&#39;s former pupils, colleagues and friends, including W. C. Alvarez, Simon Flexner, L. Aschoff, Albert Einstein, Fielding Garrison, and Alexis Carrel, who remarked in his tribute that "Libman is medicine itself." Also among the contributors was Jesse G. M. Bullowa, a professor of medicine at New York University Medical School, noted for his researches on the serum treatment of pneumonia. Libman presented this copy of his festschrift to Bullowa; his letter-length inscription to Bullowa reads as follows:</p><p>"Dear Bullowa, I am glad to inscribe this volume for you. At the same time, I wish to tell you that I have had much pleasure in watching your career, and that you have my admiration. You have not only, by your own effots, earned a prominent place in the profession, but have also been outstanding in your aid and encouragement to individuals and scientific groups and have made fine contributions yourself. Early but not first printing recently rebound in half red morocco and marbled boards with new endpapers. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the recto of the page listing other books by Hemingway: "For Colonel Roy Youmans/(Charles LeRoy)/with all best wishes/from his friend/Ernest Hemingway." Charles Leroy Youmans met Hemingway when he was an ambulance driver in World War I for the French, in their "American Field Service" program, while Hemingway drove for Italy&#39;s similar program. Later, in World War II, Youmans flew a small plane posing as an archaeologist but in fact was a CIA undercover agent. He maintained his friendship with Hemingway, spending much time with him in bars in Cuba. He was also the author of DICCIONARIO DE APELLIDOS CASTELLANOS, ORIGEN Y SIGNIFICADO, published in Havana in 1955. A copy of this title was in Hemingway&#39;s library in Finca Vigia, Cuba, Hemingway&#39;s principal residence from 1939 to 1960. Loosely laid in is an original receipt from Goodspeed&#39;s Book Shop from 1983 for the purchase of this book.

      [Np, but possibly London. 1918-1932]. - Seventy-one original painted illustrations, done in watercolor and gouache, each measuring about 14 x 11 inches. Some light soiling and chipping around the edges, but images generally bright and clean. Overall, very good. A remarkable group of original cover art for the BUFFALO BILL NOVELS, a British boys' pulp magazine published from 1916-1932 by the Aldine Publishing Co. in London. Despite its name, the stories were not always about Buffalo Bill, though they were always set in the Old West and feature plenty of cowboys and Indians. These illustrations are all signed by Robert Prowse (R.P.), who did artwork for this and other similar projects; some are dated below his initials. The series ran for 342 issues, though the last cover in this collection is for No. 344, possibly an unpublished issue, as we could find no trace of this title associated with the Buffalo Bill Novels. Somewhere between No. 188 and No. 191, "New Series" began to appear above the issue number, though they all appear to be of the same run and the numbering is continuous.         The Interne

      New York: Macaulay. (1932). First. First edition. A bit of scuffing at the bottom of the boards else near fine in a bright, very good dustwrapper with some slight spine fading and some modest chipping to the spine ends. Additionally this copy is Signed by both authors -- this is one of only three books we have seen signed by Thurman. A very nice copy of this seldom encountered novel, a somewhat sensationalistic story of what happens behind the scenes at a big city hospital. Thurman was a central figure in the Harlem Renaissance. His residence in Harlem was referred to as "Niggerati Manor" and was one of the central gathering places for the Harlem intellectual elite. Born in Salt Lake City and educated there and in Los Angeles, his brilliance and varied background allowed him to participate in and simultaneously critique the Harlem Renaissance with unique perspective. He was chosen by Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and others to be the editor of Fire!!, the short lived (one issue) magazine which was probably the high point of the young intellectuals during the Harlem Renaissance. The two novels he wrote during that time, The Blacker the Berry and The Infants of Spring, were defining works of Renaissance literature. The Interne, written with Furman, a white author Thurman met while working for the publisher Macaulay, is a scathing indictment of the bureaucracy and corruption of urban hospitals as seen by the novel&#39;s hero, an idealistic young doctor. Thurman left Harlem for Hollywood and worked on screenplays, including Tomorrow&#39;s Children starring Sterling Holloway, a story drawn from The Interne about court-ordered sterilization of the poor. At the time Thurman&#39;s weekly studio paycheck of $250 was, according to one source, the highest salary paid to any African-American in the United States. He returned to Harlem for a visit in 1934. An alcoholic and long plagued with ill-health, he collapsed in the middle of his reunion party and was taken to the very hospital he condemned in The Interne. Diagnosed with tuberculosis, he languished there for six months before finally dying on Christmas, 1934, at the age of 32. Rare in jacket and exceptionally so signed. .

A very good or better example showing light use. This is a unique copy of a scarce work. Julian Huxley's copy with his signature at the head of the front cover. Also signed on page 1 by the author Aldous Huxley - who published Brave New World the same year. Huxley [Julian] came from the distinguished Huxley family. His brother was the writer Aldous Huxley, and half-brother a fellow biologist and Nobel laureate, Andrew Huxley; his father was writer and editor Leonard Huxley; and his paternal grandfather, the subject of this lecture, was biologist Thomas Henry Huxley, famous as a friend and supporter of Charles Darwin and proponent of evolution. His maternal grandfather was the academic Tom Arnold, and great-grandfather Thomas Arnold of Rugby School.' 'Thomas Henry Huxley PC, FRS (4 May 1825 Ealing, London - 29 June 1895 Eastbourne, Sussex) was an English biologist, known as "Darwin's Bulldog" for his advocacy of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Huxley's famous 1860 debate with the Lord Bishop of Oxford Samuel Wilberforce was a key moment in the wider acceptance of evolution, and in his own career. Wilberforce was coached by Richard Owen, against whom Huxley also debated on whether man was closely related to apes. Huxley was slow to accept some of Darwin's ideas, such as gradualism, and was undecided about natural selection, but despite this he was wholehearted in his public support of Darwin. He was instrumental in developing scientific education in Britain, and fought against the more extreme versions of religious tradition. Huxley coined the term 'agnostic' to describe his own views on religion, a term whose use has continued to the present day, and which throws light on his demanding criteria for proof in science. Huxley had little schooling, and taught himself almost everything he knew. Remarkably, he became perhaps the finest comparative anatomist of the second half of the nineteenth century. He worked first on invertebrates, clarifying the relationships between groups that were previously little understood. Later, he worked more on vertebrates, especially on the relationship between man and the apes. Another of his important conclusions was that birds evolved from dinosaurs, namely, small carnivorous theropods. This view is widely held today. The tendency has been for this fine anatomical work to be overshadowed by his energetic controversial activity in favour of evolution, and by his extensive public work on scientific education, both of which had significant effect on society in Britain and elsewhere. His most famous descendents are the third generation offspring of Leonard Huxley: 'Sir Julian Sorell Huxley, grandson, FRS (June 22, 1887 - February 14, 1975) was an English evolutionary biologist, author, humanist and internationalist, known for his popularizations of science in books and lectures. He was the first director of UNESCO, founding member of the World Wildlife Fund, and was knighted in 1958. His work in zoology was broader even than his grandfather: it included ethology and wildlife conservation, genetics and development as well as evolution. His two sons were both scientists of note: Anthony Julian Huxley, a botanist, and Francis Huxley, an anthropologist. Sir Andrew Huxley OM FRS, grandson (b 1917, son of Leonard Huxley and Rosalind Bruce) won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1963 jointly for work on nerve impulses. Andrew is the second Huxley to become President of the Royal Society (1980-85).'         Greek Memories [Uncorrected Proof Copy]

      Cassell [1932], London - The uncorrected proof copy of this memoir of the author's time in Greece during World War I, during which time he worked for the British intelligence service MI6, eventually becoming the head of the Aegean Intelligence Service. The memoir was suppressed upon publication as a violation of the Official Secrets Act, and Mackenzie was fined. In the book he revealed for the first time the existence of the SIS (Secret Intelligence Service) and was highly critical of particular individuals. As a result, he was later placed on MI5's watch list, and his activities were monitored by the British domestic intelligence service. The book was republished in 1939 without fanfare. Spine slant; initials to rear cover; staining and bookstore (?) label to front cover; good in wrappers. Few copies of the 1932 edition survived; proof copies are especially uncommon.         The Rose Garden of Omar Khayyam [as three miniatures; the smallest book in the world as of 1933].

      Commonwealth Press 1932-33, Worcester - Super miniature. 1/250. Custom-made clamshell box of 3/4 red morocco over marbled paper boards with gold paper-covered compartments in which nestle three successively smaller miniature books, all printings of Omar Khayyam's tetrameter poem, plus a book briefly illustrating the history of miniatures and detailing the making of this itty-bitty Rose Garden: "A Thimbleful of Books" by Thompson (approx. 6" x 8 3/4"), a booklet with two pages of the tiniest miniature reproduced as proof sheet, along with a small magnifying glass housed in a 1 x 5/8 inch folding brass frame. At the time of publication, the smallest book, measuring 1/4 x 1/4 inch and bound in paper wraps, was the world's most diminutive book.         The Devil's Highway

Appleton, New York 1932 - First Printing, with the number (1) in parenthesis on the final page. 8vo; [6], 336pp. Publisher's crimson cloth, the spine and upper cover lettered in gilt; in the original illustrated dust jacket priced at $2.00. A Near Fine or better copy, very lightly rubbed and dust-soiled; in a just about Fine, lightly edge-worn jacket. Little read today, the novels of Harold Bell Wright outsold those of every other American writer during the first quarter of the twentieth century. Newspapers of the day claimed Wright was the first author to write a novel that reached a million sales, and the statement cannot be far wrong. (The Devil's Highway, on the other hand, sold very few copies, making it today one of the most difficult of Wright's titles to obtain, in any condition.) John Lebar was the pen name of Wright's oldest son, Gilbert Munger Wright. In the Devil's Highway, they launched a scathing attack on "scientism," the belief that, in due coarse, all human misery will be solved by science. As such, the book can be seen as an attack on Nazism, Fascism and Communism, all then taking root, and more broadly on any effort to displace old-fashioned values with modern, scientific ideas. Interestingly, Ronald Reagan was one of Wright's most devoted followers.         A Scarlet Pansy

      William Faro, New York 1932 - 8vo, pp. 370. Original red boards, with the spine label perfectly preserved. Red and black frontispiece and title-page. The slightest bumping at spine ends, otherwise a very fine copy, tight and bright, lacking the dustwrapper (which we have never seen but which is presumed to exist). First edition. Robert McAlmon was born in South Dakota in 1895 and left as soon as he could. Bookish, brilliant and homosexual, he spent three years at the University of Southern California before moving to New York in 1920, where he met William Carlos Williams working on a small poetry magazine, and worked as a nude artists' model when money was scarce. In 1921 he married the lesbian heiress Winifred Ellerman, better known as the writer Bryher. Their marriage liberated both of them, she from her family, and McAlmon from worries about money. The same year he moved to Paris, and by 1922 was working as an assistant to James Joyce, editing and typing up drafts of Ulysses. He used the marital money to found his own imprint, Contact Editions. Its first book was A Hasty Bunch (1922), McAlmon's own collection of short stories, which was quickly followed by Ernest Hemingway's debut, Three Stories and Ten Poems (1923). Contact ran for nine years and became one of the most significant expatriate literary presses of the period, publishing work by, among others, Ford Madox Ford, Gertrude Stein, William Carlos Williams, and Nathaniel West. But McAlmon's own reputation did not endure: resentful of the success of others and increasingly depressed by his own continuing obscurity, he wrote less and less, drank more and more, and eventually disappeared from the literary scene altogether. He died in 1956 in Desert Springs, California, embittered and forgotten. In 1938 McAlmon's Being Geniuses Together was published, his waspish memoir of literary life in 1920s Paris. James Joyce, who did not come out of the book well, was withering: 'the office boy's revenge', he called it. But McAlmon's real revenge on the Montparnasse literati had already appeared, six years earlier, in New York, published by a tiny publishing house, and under an assumed name. A Scarlet Pansy, by 'Robert Scully', is the story of Fay Etrange. Born in Kuntsville, Pennysylvania, Fay decamps to New York as soon as she's able, and supports herself by working as a nude model. She attends medical school with Mason Linberg, her close friend and cruising companion, and when Linberg astounds the entire cast by announcing his forthcoming marriage to one Marjorie Bull-Dike, Fay throws a lavish party for the odd couple, who then decamp to Paris. Left alone, Fay embarks on a series of lubricious encounters with, among many, many others, an Irish cop, some soldiers on leave, and an entire polo team (not the horses). At the last she finds true love with a handsome lieutenant, who in the novel's closing pages is destined to die in Fay's arms on the battlefields of France. Of course, what is obvious to all but the dimmest reader is that Fay Etrange is a man, a man with a knowingly homonymous name. The device of referring to the character as 'her' throughout the book fooled no-one but the authorities who, staggeringly, failed to prosecute. Fay, then, is the eponymous hero of A Scarlet Pansy, and the book itself is a scurrilous roman à clef, a broadside aimed at just about everyone McAlmon had ever known in Paris. 'Mason Linberg' is McAlmon himself; the medically-trained, poetry-loving Fay is based on McAlmon's close friend, the medically-trained, poetry-loving William Carlos Williams; and Mason's bride 'Marjorie Bull-Dike' is McAlmon's real-life bride-of-convenience, Bryher. The gay poet and artist Marsden Hartley appears as 'Miss Painter', while poor Elisabeth Marbury, socialite and sometime literary agent to Oscar Wilde, saw herself reincarnated as 'Elizabeth 'Clittie' Thorndike'. Lastly, McAlmon's embittered portraits of Sylvia Beach, Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas are not hard to spot among the large cast o
