1932 - 20 leaves, several photographs to each page. 24 x 18 cm. 128 photographs, 5 small ones missing. Some look to have information on reverse. A wonderful album chronicling the ski, camping and mountain climbing trips of an ordinary group of friends in 1930's Poland. The album dates 1932-1939. Some places include Czarny Staw Gasienicowy, A glacial lake in the High Tatras. Most of these photographs are in Zakopane, a popular resort and tourist town in South Poland, also known as the winter capitol of Poland and center of Goral culture. Zakopane is a favourite place for skiing, hiking and mountaineering, many of these images show just that, some great shots of climbing the mountains, skiing and camping. The album itself is overall in very good condition, images are clean, pages are tight. Album in brown leather with really lovely designs to covers and ties at spine. Front cover with engraved brass studs as well, album very characteristic of that Goral, "Highlander" style. Included also at the very front is a folded original pencil drawing. It's quite a good fun little drawing, also in that Goral style.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1932. First Edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. A nearly Fine copy of the book with spine gilt intact and brilliant. Lower corners gently bumped and minor discoloration to the rear board, withal a lovely copy. In a bright, nearly Fine dust jacket with a crease running the length of the spine, but without chips, tears or toning (and we shouldn't have to specify unrestored, but since most other copies on the market are in restored jackets... beware!) A book that is rarely seen in such attractive condition. & & Hemingway's famous work on Bullfighting, one of his favorite passions, published in 1932. Bullfighting, Hemingway thought, was "of great tragic interest, being literally of life and death." Hemingway didn't just want to write a successful book - or work of art - but a complete explication of bullfighting itself, its participants, traditions and history. In fact, "Death in the Afternoon" includes extensive photographs and a glossary to accompany Hemingway's text. "…Ernest Hemingway, in the handling of words as an interpretation of life, is not a brilliant and ephemeral novillero, but a matador possessed of solid and even classic virtues." (Contemporary Review in The Saturday Review of Literature). Near Fine in Near Fine. dust jacket.

Germany 1932 - Vintage original 9 ¼ x 11 ¾" (23 x 30 cm.) double weight glossy silver gelatin print still photo, Germany. Leni Riefenstahl, Mathias Wieman, Beni Fuhrer, Max Holzboer, Martha Mair, dir: Leni Riefenstahl; Sokal. A beautiful character portrait of the legendary actress, director, writer, editor and producer, Leni Riefenstahl. Riefenstahl performed all these creative tasks on this film for her own production company. This is the story of Junta, a woman hated by the people of her village, who suspect her of being a witch. She is the only person who can climb the nearby mountains and has discovered the mysteries of the blue light during her climbs. She is cast out of the town and goes to live in the mountains. She shares the secret of the blue light with one man, but he betrays her. Groundbreaking filmmaking at the time, it was an early sound film (though a silent version was also made) to be shot on high mountain locations and employed the people who lived in the mountains as the supporting players. Riefenstahl had made a series of mountain films with director Arnold Fanck in the years prior and was now ready to make her own films. So impressed by this film was Adolf Hitler that he asked Riefenstahl to make TRIUMPH OF THE WILL. This stunning portrait features the film's title and L.R. Studio credit at the bottom margin and a German blindstamp at the bottom right corner. The still is numbered 44. There is some slight creasing at the very bottom right hand corner and a bit of creasing and tiny tear in the blank white margin towards the right edge side near the sudio logo. ABOUT FINE.

A 100% guaranteed flawless copy in as new condition. Héliogravure is a very sophisticated ancient reproduction process of art photography, rather unique in it's kind and known for their soft mat and charcoal like surface (fragile) that gives an almost 3D effect. It is an intaglio (incised carving) printing process - in the 1920's and -30's still half manually and half mechanically conducted and abandoned in the late 60's. Images are printed by making printing plates in copper : 1st. a photo-chemical process that creates the intaglio surface where the photographic image is etched into a copper plate, 2nd. the copper plate is used to print the image onto special etching paper using inks. This can sometimes create some irregularities in the image, but they are mostly hardly visible and not disturbing. This image is nevertheless exceedingly rare.         Japanese Fan Designs

No date. (circa1945).. 38 beautiful individual life size original designs (approximately 45 x 22cm) for Japanese folding fans all but one bearing the stamps of the fan maker ??? [To-ku-da-sei]. One of the designs appears to be earlier (possibly 1932) and is likely not from the ??? [To-ku-da-sei] studio as it does not bear their stamp. The use of inks, metallic ink and gouache in a wide variety of colours from the very subtle to the highly coloured have created this stunning collection of original designs. All but two are laid down on a plain paper backing. The paper backing is torn and chipped at edges and two of the designs have closed tears. Each design is presented in a mylar sleeve and the whole collection is offered in an archival card clamshell box. This is a rare collection of Japanese fan (sensu ??) design patterns which appear to have been created in the first half of the 20th century. Most of the sheets are stamped To-ku-da-sei (???) which appears to be the studio. It appears this company is no longer in business today. Designs include a variety of fans for everyday use by both males and females. Some sample designs are specifically for the highly prized and expensive Sandalwood (??) fan. This rare collection provides us with a sense of the variety, colour, beauty and sophistication of Japanese fan designs. .

The isolation of crystalline vitamin A plus other materials

1932-1945. <p>From the Isolator of Vitamin A to the Discoverer of Vitamin E </p><p>Holmes, Harry Nicholls (1879-1958). (1) (with Ruth E. Corbet) The isolation of crystalline vitamin A. Offprint from Journal of the American Chemical Society 59 (1937). 2042-2047pp. Original printed wrappers. Inscribed by Holmes to Herbert M. Evans (1882-1971) on the front wrapper: &#147;To Herbert M. Evans with the Compliments of Harry N. Holmes.&#148; (2) Autograph letter signed to Evans. 1 page. Oberlin, April 21, 1945. 282 x 214 mm. (3) Black and white photograph of Holmes in his laboratory. 255 x 207 mm. Signed on the verso by Holmes: &#147;Harry N. Holmes Oberlin College.&#148; (4) (with Henry M. Leicester) The isolation of carotene. Offprint from Journal of the American Chemical Society 54 (1932). 716-720pp. Original printed wrappers. 236 x 160 mm. Together 4 items, plus cover addressed in Holmes&#146;s hand to Evans with Evans&#146;s pencil note &#147;Isolation of crystalline Vitamin A&#148; on the front. Very good to fine. </p><p>First Editions, Offprint Issues of nos. (1) and (3). Holmes and Corbet were the first to isolate vitamin A in pure crystalline form. Their paper, &#147;The isolation of crystalline vitamin A,&#148; was their first full-length description of their achievement, following a very brief announcement published in Science earlier in 1937 (see Garrison-Morton 1074). Holmes inscribed this copy to Herbert M. Evans, the co-discoverer of vitamin E (see Garrison-Morton 1070), after Evans had written to Holmes requesting a copy and other materials; this is explained in Holmes&#146;s letter to Evans: </p><p>"The compliment of your request in your Feb. letter deserved an instant reply but delay in finding a photo&#151;and a rush of work&#151;delayed me. </p><p>"It was more than kind of you to call our isolation of crystalline vitamin A a &#147;classic,&#148; especially after the boorish attitude of Karrer at Zurich. </p><p>"And so I&#146;m glad to send you, in separate packet, photo, reprint desired&#151;and a few others that I hope may interest you." </p><p>No. (3) is the photograph Holmes sent to Evans. &#147;Karrer&#148; refers to Paul Karrer (1889-1971), who was the first to establish the structure of beta-carotene (the chief precursor of vitamin A); Karrer received a share of the 1937 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his research on vitamins. No. (4), the paper by Holmes and Leicester, describes a laboratory method of isolating carotene &#147;which would minimize the exposure of the materials to air at all times&#148; (p. 717).</p>
