        ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND

Nottingham: Hodder and Stoughton Limited, for Boots Pure Drug Co., Ltd., [1932]. First edition with Hudson's illustrations and the Centenary edition of Carroll’s birth. 12 tipped in full color plates, also numerous black & orange illustrations throughout the text by Gwynned Hudson. 4to, publisher’s full red cloth with full gilt pictorial designs and lettering on the upper cover and spine, in the scarce dustjacket with pastedown colour plate on the upper cover. 180. A fine copy with only mild mellowing to the spine of the dustjacket. QUITE SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION AND ESPECIALLY IN THE DUSTJACKET. This book is a visual feast of color and decoration. Hudson’s illustrations evoke a magical world of fancy for Carroll’s classic work Though Hudson did not stray far from the original vision of John Tenniel's drawings, she perhaps instilled her work with a more lively spirit. Her use of color reminds one of Rene Bull or Edward Detmold. A copy of this book with the dustjacket is a very nice find. A very pleasing edition of what is perhaps the most fantastic children’s story of all time.

The Shining Life: An Appreciation of Julius Rosenwald Delivered at a Memorial Service in Fisk Memorial Chapel, Nashville, Tennessee, February 14, 1932

Fisk University Bulletin. Vol. 8, Number 1. (Nashville: Fisk University) 1932 - 8vo., printed wrappers, sewn; lightly soiled. First edition; not identified in standard bibliographical references. A presentation copy, inscribed: "For Doris Ulmann, with sincere regards. James Weldon Johnson," on the title page ----- New York photographer Doris Ulmann (1884-1934), acclaimed for her photographic study of South Carolina black families in Julia Peterkin's "Roll, Jordan, Roll" (1933), supplied a striking portrait for "Along This Way; The Autobiography of James Weldon Johnson" (1933). Chief Justice William Howard Taft called Julius Rosenwald, patriarch of the Sears, Roebuck empire, "a great national asset." On February 14, 1932, five weeks after Rosenwald's death, James Weldon Johnson, recently appointed to the Adam K. Spence Chair of Creative Literature and Writing at Fisk University, paid tribute to the Chicago philanthropist, whose Fund (officially incorporated in October 1917) had provided nearly $5,000,000, or around fifteen percent of the amount necessary to establish some 5,000 rural schoolhouses (for 650,000 black students) across fifteen Southern states. "[I]n this age of tottering social standards, of crumbling religious sanctions, of bankrupt statesmanship and economics, of discredited politicians and financiers, it seems to me that one of the supreme needs of humanity is men in whom it can believe," asserted Johnson. "[T]he life of Julius Rosenwald, is a shining life." Johnson, in particular, had well benefited from Rosenwald's generosity - with the completion of "Black Manhattan" made possible by a 1929 Rosenwald fellowship.
