De la psychose paranoïaque dans ses rapports avec la personnalité

Paris: Librairie E. Le François,, 1932. Octavo (235 × 156 mm). Modern brown quarter morocco by Lobstein-Laurenchet, marbled boards, raised bands, spine gilt-lettered direct, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, printed wrappers bound in. Stain to foot of original front wrapper also very slightly affecting the extreme lower margin of the first few leaves, else an excellent copy. First edition of Lacan's first published work. Lacan's ground-breaking thesis, particularly its central narrative of the story of the woman he named Aimée, immediately attracted the attention of the Surrealists. "To this thesis," Dali wrote in 1933, "we are indebted for giving us, for the first time, a global and homogeneous idea of the [paranoid] phenomenon, beyond any of the abject notions in which psychiatry at present is mired." "The young psychiatrist was not satisfied with effecting a brilliant critical synthesis among several trends of French thought; he also proposed a writing of madness which was as innovative at the time as that of Breton or Bataille. Instead of a traditional case history, we find in the 1932 thesis a novel 150 pages in length, in the style of Flaubert, that is, in a literary language irreducible to the wooden prose of psychiatric discourse. Lacan recounts his heroine's adventures with the pen of an authentic writer, displacing on the character of Aimée the misfortunes of a contemporary Emma Bovary. That in fact is the greatest originality of this innovative book" (Élisabeth Roudinesco, Jacques Lacan & Co: a history of psychoanalysis in France, 1925-1985, University of Chicago Press, 1990, p. 112).

Original photo album of a crew member of HMS Emerald, with private pictures of Bouvet Island and a 4 page manuscript report about the landing on the island. The expedition to Bouvet was led by Admiral Edward Evans, former second-in-command of captain Scott's antarctic expedition.

      - Original photo album of a crew member of HMS Emerald, with private pictures of Bouvet Island and a 4 page manuscript report about the landing on the island. Oblong 4to blue cloth photo album, bound with string. 32 pages of mounted gelatin silver and platinum prints, taken between 1932 and 1934, last page with some additional photos taken in 1941. This is a personal photo album from sailor Edward C. Newman, covering his overseas service between 1932 and 1941. The photos all have handwritten captions and the subjects include travel and crew, as well as local people and wildlife. A very interesting aspect about this photo album is that Edward C. Newman was aboard the expedition of HMS Milford which visited Bouvet Island in 1934. Bouvet, an Island near Antarctica, is probably the most remote place in the world. It was discovered in 1738 by Jean-Baptiste Lozier Bouvet and not sighted again until 1808. In 1825, a whaler made the first landing on the Island. Only in 1927 the first extended stay took place, by the crew of the Norwegian vessel Norvegia. The increase of whaling in the Southern ocean brought Norvegian and British expeditions to the area. Britain had waived territorial claims on Bouvet Island in favor of Norway, but in 1934 HMS Milford made a dramatic dash to Bouvet to make sure that no hostile power was operating there. Captain of the Milford was Admiral Edward Evans (Former second-in-command of captain Scott's antarctic expedition). He and his crew found nothing, except the sole occupant s of seals, sea elephants and sea birds. The island remains an uninhabited, very hard to reach place even today - only a few successful landings have been executed since its discovery in 1738. The four-page handwritten account of the voyage makes for an interesting read. The outward journey from South-Africa was undertaken in fierce weather conditions ("on one day, she [HMS Milford] was actually pushed back 90 miles"). A curious event recorded is the "undiscovery" of Thompson Island, a phantom island supposedly sighted by sailors between 1825 and 193. The Milford sailed directly over its reported coordinates and took soundings at 150 fathoms to prove it was not there. A interesting footnote is that Newton records how permission had been obtained from the Norwegian consul in cape town to overprint existing Norwegian stamps with "Bouvet Oya" and despatch a mail from the islands (though as Newman notes, since the overprint was not officially acknowledged by the Norwegian authorities, the stamps must be regarded as a private issue". The remaining part of the Album provides photos of time spent in Western Africa, with visits to Gambia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Ghana and Equatorial Guinea including the Annabon Islands. These pictures seem to antedate the Bouvet Island mission. Newman clearly considered that mission the most important part of the album and inserted these photos at front. Several of the pictures taken during the African part of the voyage show the celebration of crossing the equator. The album is completed with pictures of South Africa and, at the very end, some photo of the HMS Emerald during the second World War, taken with rough weather. A remarkable set of photos, chronicling a tour along Western-and South Africa, and a unique account of the historical landing on Bouvet Island. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        King Kong.

NY. Grosset & Dunlap. (1932.) - First Novelized Edition by Delos W. Lovelace. With illustrated endpapers with scenes from the Radio Picture. The complete novel with scenes from the movie on the endpapers. VG+ in woven lime green cloth stamped brightly in black on the front boards and the spine. Internally in fine condition: tight, clean fresh paper, no names, superb pages, and crisply printed photos from the classic motion picture. The spine is completely clean, bright, and crisp. A gorgeous copy except for the mottling to the boards. Unfortunately, the boards have been exposed to mold, and there are extensive patches on the front and rear boards of the whitish brown mold which has leeched the lime green color out of the cloth. About the bottom third of the front boards and half of the rear boards have been affected by the microbes. Perhaps this copy would be best rebound in leather, as the interior is virtually fine.       New York: Limited Editions Club, 1932. Hardcover. Superb copy in a Near Fine slipcase. Scarce in this condition. John Tenniel. In the original heavily gilt-decorated full red morocco. With the original illustrations by John Tenniel. Copy #1288 of 1500 with typography and binding by Frederick Warde who has SIGNED the colophon page. Additionally SIGNED for the publisher on a separate page bound in before the title page by Alice Hargreaves, "the original Alice," one of only about 500 copies of the total edition of 1500 copies that were signed by her a few years before her death. Alice refused to sign other editions of this famous book in her lifetime, written by Carroll for her when she was young Alice Liddell, but she was convinced with the help of monetary compensation to sign these copies. She would also sign two years later copies of THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS by the same publisher. A rare opportunity to acquire one of the most famous children's books ever published here signed by the subject of the book. Many have praised this book, but perhaps novelist Sir Walter Besant's remark is the most insightful: "It admits us into a state of being which, until it was written, was not only unexplored but undiscovered." Book completely original, the slipcase is new and sympathetic to the original. A nicer copy of this book will not be found.

        Memorial, The [First State]

Published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, 52 Tavistock Square, London 1932 - First Impression ('First Published 1932' on copyright page), one of only 1,222 copies. Publisher's first-state pale pink linen lettered in blue, brown top edge; in mid-brown illustrated dust jacket (designed by Jack Banting), printed in blue and priced 7/6. Just about Fine (front hinge very slightly cracked, end papers lightly spotted), in a pristine jacket. Woolmer 294. According to the Literary Encyclopedia, the death of Isherwood’s father in the First World War and the deep, lifelong mourning into which his mother fell provide much of the background for the family dynamics of Isherwood's early novels, including The Memorial, in which Cambridge student Eric Vernon finds himself torn between a desire to emulate his heroic father and his envy for his father’s great friend Edward Blake, who survived the war only to throw himself into gay life in Berlin and the pursuit of meaningless relationships. The story is imbued with Freudian family analysis, centering on the conflict between mother and son, and rebellion against the stifling English class society (Isherwood was born onto a withering branch of a distinguished family tree that had roots in Cheshire extending back to the Civil War). In his early career Isherwood adopted the high-Modernist style of the preceding generation of English novelists, particularly Virginia Woolf (whose Hogarth Press brought out The Memorial) and D. H. Lawrence. While breaking no new stylistic ground, Isherwood was experimenting with the novel form, recombining the chapters of The Memorial into a non-sequential chronology. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
