        Amid These Storms

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1932 - A collection of 23 engaging essays on a wide variety of subjects published in 1932. Published in England as "Thoughts and Adventures", this is one of the few Churchill first editions for which the U.S. edition bears a different title than the British. From the original front flap blurb: "These true stories concern such things as the tides that make a politician change his mind; the domination of chance in human lives; the cartoonists who mocked Churchill; the chances and events that occurred while he was in the trenches; phases of the war seen from intimate participation with the high commands; flying experiences in 1912; the Irish; the future; and contemporary change." This book engagingly displays both the breadth of Churchill's mind and life experience and the vivid hues of his personality. The U.S. first edition's original dust jacket is extremely scarce and quite striking, bearing a full length photo (on both the front cover and the spine) of Churchill in Flanders, 1916, wearing his French poilu's helmet. Unfortunately, this edition was fragile and most copies look like they spent time in the trenches with Churchill. Both the orange color on the dust jacket and the red-orange binding proved exceptionally prone to sunning. Further, the coarse cloth binding was very susceptible to soiling and wear. Consequently truly bright copies are almost never seen. Offered here is the first U.S. edition, only printing - a truly fine copy in a highly complete original dust jacket. The orange-red binding is stunning - immaculate, tight and square. No soiling. Square corners. Bright gilt. No fading to the spine, which remains the same vivid color as the boards. The contents are equally pristine - crisp, bright and tight. No spotting or previous owner marks of any kind. Even the untrimmed fore edge of the text block is clean and bright. Really a spectacular copy. The unclipped dust jacket still bears the original $3.50 price on the front flap. It is notable for two reasons: it is highly complete and the orange color on the spine is unfaded. Consequently, spine presentation is unusually good. The dust jacket is fairly soiled and stained overall and has closed tears at the edges of up to .5 inches in length. Losses, however, are minor, consisting of light chipping at the edges and the top of the spine to a maximum depth of .25 inch. The bright, unfaded orange color on the spine - something we almost never see - helps compensates nicely for the soiling. We should disclose that this is a "married" pair, the volume having previously lost its jacket and the jacket having come from a volume which sustained irreparable damage. That said, both are first edition, only printing, and make a proper pair. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A95.2, Woods/ICS A39(ba), Langworth p.158 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Erased lead pencil scribbling to page 98 is lightly visible. Overall, a worthy copy. First Printing Hardcover 12mo - over 6?" - 7?" tall; First Printing. Fair Tempest, Margaret

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare - Miniature (complete in 40 volumes)

London: Allied Newspapers, Ltd., 1932. First Thus . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 2" tall. According to Miniature Book News #3 March, 1966, this set was originally printed about the same time as th Ellen Terry edition (Bryce) edition and the engravings are identical with exception that this (Allied) edition is printed on regular paper rather than India and is, thus, twice as thick. However, they advise that the Terry set is the smallest ever printed, so this set is right there, but for the added thickness. Each book is 2" x 1.4", the flexible boards are covered in black leatherette and have decorative end papers. Each comes with a frontispiece and a brief explanation. All are lightly rubbed and one or two have the covering cloth lifting at a corners. The set comes with a glossary volume and is housed in a wooden box with a list of all the volumes. This box is lovely, but since the set originally came in a small wooden book case, was apparently added later. In any case it makes a great addition to this uniquely collectible set. Based on some advertisements, this set was printed around 1932.

Possible Existence of a Neutron" in Nature Vol. 129, January to June, 1932

      - FIRST EDITION of James Chadwick's announcement of a revolutionary discovery that literally rewrote existent beliefs in nuclear science: he proved that neutrons - elementary particles devoid of any electrical charge - existed. "The discovery of the neutron made by Chadwick led to a much deeper understanding of the nature of matter, explaining for example why isotopes of elements exist. It also inspired Enrico Fermi and other physicists to investigate nuclear reactions produced by neutrons, leading to the discovery of nuclear fission" (Hutchinson, Dictionary of Scientific Biography, I, 227). This discovery provided a new tool for inducing atomic disintegration, since neutrons, being electrically uncharged, could penetrate undeflected into the atomic nucleus. "In contrast with the helium nuclei (alpha rays) which are charged, and therefore repelled by the considerable electrical forces present in the nuclei of heavy atoms, this new tool in atomic disintegration need not overcome any electric barrier and is capable of penetrating and splitting the nuclei of even the heaviest elements. Chadwick in this way prepared the way towards the fission of uranium 235 and towards the creation of the atomic bomb. Prior to Chadwick's discovery and until 1932, the atom was known to consist of a positively charged nucleus surrounded by enough negatively charged electrons to make the atom electrically neutral. Most of the atom was empty space, with its mass concentrated in a tiny nucleus. Chadwick knew that in "experiments in which beryllium was bombarded by alpha particles, a usually energetic gamma radiation appeared to be emitted. It was more penetrating than gamma radiation from radioactive elements. Measurements of the energies involved and the conservation of energy and momentum suggested to Chadwick that a new kind of particle was being produced rather than radiation. "The results pointed towards a neutral particle made up of a proton and an electron. Its mass should thus be slightly greater than that of the proton. Because the mass of the beryllium nucleus had not then been measured, Chadwick designed and carried out an experiment in which boron was bombarded with alpha particles. This produced neutrons, and from the mass of the boron nucleus and other elements and the energies involved, Chadwick determined the mass of the neutron to be 1.0067 atomic mass units, slightly greater than that of the proton" (ibid). The paper offered here was submitted in February 1932 as a letter to the editor of Nature and it is the first evidence of the neutron. The article was followed by further research and another article in June in a different journal. The June paper is sometimes cited as the 'first evidence of the neutron,' but that citation is now understood to be in error. The February letter at auction here is the first evidence of the neutron. CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Macmillan. Complete volume. 4to (Quarto). 10.5 x 7.5 inches (262 x 187mm). [lx], 952, [4].         Light of August

New York: Harrison Smith & Robert Haas, 1932 irst edition, first printing. Publisher's coarse beige cloth, front board lettered in orange, spine lettered in navy, orange top stain; in the original pictorial dust jacket designed by Arthur Hawkins Jr., with an illustration of sunbeams lighting the silhouette of a house on a hill to the front panel in blue, lettered in white and orange. Book with some light wear and rubbing to the extremities, else fine; unclipped dust jacket, with wear and chipping to the extremities, toning to the spine, chipping to the spine ends, light rubbing to the front panel, soiling to the rear panel. Light in August is a modernist Southern Gothic novel, which, like many of Faulkner's novels, is set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi. In this text, Faulkner explores the themes of race, gender, and class identity in the American South by featuring characters who do not fall neatly within the lines of any given social category. Specifically, Light in August follows the lives of Lena Grove, a pregnant and unmarried white woman in a Christian community, and Joe Christmas, a mixed-race man passing as white in the Jim Crow South. Considered among the best of modern American literature, Light in August is, as the dust jacket proclaims, "as luxurious as a plant grown in the tropical soil of the delta of the Mississippi River.". Illus. by Hawkins, Jr., Arthur. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Good/Dust Jacket Included.
