        Arabia Felix.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons,, 1932. Across the "Empty Quarter" of Arabia. With a Foreword by T. E. Lawrence (T.E.S.) and Appendix by Sir Arthur Keith. Octavo. Original maroon cloth, titles and camel vignette to spine and front cover gilt, fore edge untrimmed. Frontispiece and 47 other plates, frequent illustrations to the text and 2 full-page charts to the text, folding colour map of al-Rub' al-Khali to rear (1 : 3,000,000; opening to 450 × 720 mm). Cloth faded to pink, extremities lightly rubbed with cloth worn away in places. A very good copy. First US edition, fourth printing, a month after the first: "a specially made-up state" produced for a dinner held by Scribner's in Thomas's honour on 22 February, 1932, with a menu and guest-list bound in at the front (O'Brien). This copy is signed on the front free endpaper by Thomas and twenty-seven of the assorted explorers, journalists and publishers who had attended the "American Arabian Night atop the Empire State Building", and additionally bears the bookplate of American science-fiction author Edward Wellen to the front pastedown: a uniquely associative copy of this singularly important work, which describes the first recorded traverse of the Empty Quarter. The only non-American signature in this remarkable assembly of names (excluding the author's) is provided by Vilhjalmur Stefansson (born William Stephenson), the Canadian-Icelandic explorer of the Arctic who won the Royal Geographical Society Founder's Medal in 1921, exactly ten years before it was awarded to Thomas for his desert journey; Stefansson is accompanied by another polar traveller in Laurence McKinley Gould, a geologist by training who received the Congressional Gold Medal on his return from a triumphant voyage to the Antarctic in 1930. Further explorers include Frederick Dellenbaugh, pioneer of the American West who notably participated in the expedition that formally discovered the Henry Mountains, Utah, Roy Chapman Andrews, a naturalist who led several successful expeditions to the Gobi Desert in the 1920s, making the first ever discovery of fossilised dinosaur eggs, and allegedly the inspiration for Indiana Jones, and also Kermit, son of President Theodore Roosevelt, who joined his father on his famous journey through the Amazon Basin and served with distinction in both world wars as an intelligence officer before committing suicide in Alaska in 1943. Visibly, though, the most distinctive signature suitably belongs to Lowell George, the relentlessly self-publicising broadcaster whose film, With Allenby in Palestine and Lawrence in Arabia (1919), "marked Lawrence's apotheosis and the genesis of what became his 'legend'" (ODNB). This dazzling array is completed by signatures from members of the Scribner family and other publishing grandees, a number of journalists including noted anti-corruption campaigner George Britt, and noted author Vince Sheean, whose Personal History (1935) won the inaugural National Book Award and later served as the basis for Hitchcock's thriller, Foreign Correspondent. A Post-Office worker who left school with no qualifications, Thomas (1892-1950) joined the Somerset Light Infantry on the outbreak of war and was posted to Mesopotamia, where he was talent-spotted by Sir Arnold Wilson, the British civil commissioner in the Persian Gulf. Thomas "held a number of civilian posts under Wilson and distinguished himself as political officer at Shatra during the Iraqi uprising in 1920 … Wilson's successor in the gulf, Sir Percy Cox, retained Thomas in his position as a political adviser to the Arab leaders serving under the provisional British administration. He was appointed OBE and transferred to Transjordan as assistant to the chief British representative at the court of Amir Abdullah. He became in 1924 financial adviser (and later first minister) in the sultanate of Muscat" (ODNB). It was at this time that developed the ambition to cross the Empty Quarter and made a number of preparatory reconnaissance trips, during which "he dressed as a Bedouin, eschewed tobacco and alcohol, and spoke only Arabic". Late in 1930 Thomas left Muscat on a passing British warship, arriving at Dhufar, on the Indian Ocean coast of Arabia "from where he intended to commence his south?-north crossing of the empty quarter. After waiting some months for his guides (who were involved in desert hostilities) he eventually set out with a small camel caravan but no promise of protection from the warring and predatory tribes of the interior. He emerged fifty-eight days later at Doha, on the Persian Gulf. The Royal Geographical Society in London promptly awarded him their founder's medal, and other learned societies around the world followed suit … He was admired by T. E. Lawrence and by his successor Wilfred Thesiger, who found twenty years later that Thomas was remembered by the Bedouin as an honourable, brave, and tolerant man". O'Brien notes that one copy of this special issue was probably given to each dinner-guest, and that "most copies have signatures of guests of honour near their printed names", though it is hard to conceive of a copy as generously and evocatively inscribed as this. A full list of signatories is available on request.

[N.p., but possibly London, 1932. Some light soiling and chipping around edges, but images generally bright and clean. Overall, very good. A remarkable group of original cover art for the BUFFALO BILL NOVELS, a British boys' pulp magazine published from 1916 to 1932 by the Aldine Publishing Co. in London. Despite its name, the stories were not always about Buffalo Bill, though they were always set in the Old West and featured plenty of cowboys and Indians. These illustrations are all signed by Robert Prowse (R.P.), who did artwork for this and other similar projects; some are dated below his initials. The series ran for 342 issues, though the last cover in this collection is for No. 344, possibly an unpublished issue, as we could find no trace of this title associated with the BUFFALO BILL NOVELS. Somewhere between No. 188 and No. 191, "New Series" began to appear above the issue number, though they all appear to be of the same run and the numbering is continuous. The titles are as follows: No. 23. THE MAN IN BLACK No. 24. THE MAD AVENGER No. 29. THE RED TOMAHAWK No. 41. THE PONY RIDE DETECTIVE No. 44. THE CRIMSON ARROW No. 51. BUCK TAYLOR!

Altogether 4½ pp. To John Henderson, Secretary of the National Liberal Club, on invitations and publications: "[.] Jacob has transmitted your request for a speech. Frankly I had much rather not speak. If I did that sort of thing at all well I would be very glad to do it, but I am - at this sort of thing - heavy, self-conscious, dull & disinteresting. Is he being expelled for any reason? Or has he simply resigned his membership? [.]" - "[.] Mr C. H. Norman writes to complain that his membership of the N.L.C. has been 'cancelled' on account of his anti-war letters. I am half-shocked at this. He impresses me as being quite insane upon the war question but quite honest & I fail to see the justification for this expulsion of an esteemed most desirable member [.]" (undated, but c. 1914). - "Dear Mr Henderson, Yes I'm sorry. But do you know I didn't enter the N.L.C. from one year's end to another. I have had to go through my list of annual subscriptions & cut them down. And there it is! [.]" (13 April 1932).

Paris: E. Flammarion,, 1932. Octavo (236 × 187 mm) Original plain light card wraps within the striking "neon" lithographic wrapper, the proofs, 20 leaves (c.252 × 194 mm) loose in matching wraps. The wraps of the book a little chafed at the extremities, light toning of the text, a scatter of foxing to the fore-edge with minor encroachment to the margins, else very good; the proofs and wraps altogether very good. First published in an edition of 500, plus 25 copies hors commerce, this one of 15 offered on Madagascar - the third tier of the edition - and here accompanied by a nearly complete suite - it lacks two of the duller images - of the illustrations offered with the 10 copies on Japon impérial. Lighthearted celebration of the "flora" and "fauna" of the "dancings" - night clubs - that proliferated in Paris in the inter-war years; "The Amercanized term un dancing referred to bars, nightclubs, and cabarets of varying sizes as well as to dance halls themselves. Un dancing, it seemed, required little more than upbeat music and a bit of room to move" (Jackson, Making Jazz French, p41). Miomandre's witty text is accompanied by some splendidly lively illustrations by Henri Gazan, hand-printed by Edmond Desjobert who produced work for Picasso, Chagall and Matisse. Wonderful evocation of les années folles including a "Salut a Joséphine [Baker]" with accompanying illustration which is worth the price of admission on its own.

[Original Photo Album from Animation Productions]

np, [ca. 1932]. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Oblong 4to. Original screw-bound linen boards. With Pal's bookplate to front free end-paper and his ownership stamp to inside front and back covers. Containing 68 original B&W photos adhesive-mounted rectos only to 39 leaves plus some related scrap. Apparently complete. Binding lacking one screw. Else fine. Academy Award-winning animator, producer, and director George Pal emigrated from his native Hungary in 1939 and went on to a successful and innovative Hollywood career. He is perhaps best remembered as the producer of several science fiction and fantasy films in the 1950s, including WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE and THE WAR OF THE WORLDS (1953). He himself directed TOM THUMB (1958), THE TIME MACHINE (1960) and THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM (1962). But before his emigration, he had a varied and successful career in Europe, where he developed the "Puppetoon" method. “Puppetoons” are a form of replacement animation in which a series of different hand-carved wooden puppets (or puppet parts) are substituted in each frame, rather than manipulating a single puppet, as in most stop-motion animation. It was for this technique he won an honorary Oscar in 1943 and these intricate, time consuming techniques are on prominent display here. The majority of the photographs appear to be production images and action stills from MIDNIGHT (1932), an early Pal advertising effort featuring dancing cigarettes, widely recognized as the first Puppetoon animation. A photograph titled “Heiraten und nicht verzweifeln” (“Spouses do not despair.”) precedes 16 photos of a different (though likely equally as early) household cleaning product film. Eight German press clippings on Pal and his methods additionally mounted to the final 6 leaves. A rich and handsome album, documenting at least several commercial animation projects undertaken by Pal before his emigration to the US, and likely produced for showcasing PalÂ’s early advertising shorts to perspective clients. Overall, an exceptional record of animation history and production.

Sci. (April 11, 1932). 8vo. 3, [1]pp. 243 x 161 mm. Original printed wrappers, somewhat faded. Moderate browning, otherwise very good. First Separate Edition. In 1931, Ir?ne Joliot-Curie, daughter of Pierre and Marie Curie, and her husband Frédéric Joliot began four years of intensive collaborative research on radioactivity that culminated in their discovery of artificial radioactivity. In November 1935 the couple were awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry for their synthesis of new radioactive elements; they are thus numbered among the small group of outstanding physicists (including Marie Curie) who have received Nobel awards in chemistry (see Weber, Pioneers of Science, p. 4). The present paper is one of several originating from the first experiments that the Joliot-Curies carried out during this period, which focused on the penetrating radiation (known as Bothe-Becker radiation) emanating from beryllium, boron and certain other light elements when bombarded with alpha rays. During the course of these experiments, the Joliot-Curies made an important discovery: interposing a plate of hydrogen-containing material between the radiation source and the ionization chamber caused a large increase in the current. ?It appeared that this radiation, produced only in hydrogen-containing substances, consisted of protons ejected by the penetrating Bothe-Becker radiation? (DSB). The Joliot-Curies first announced their discovery in a paper presented in January 1932; the present paper, published three months later, describes further progress in their investigations. The Joliot-Curie?s work in this field led directly to James Chadwick?s discovery of the neutron in February 1932.
