Original slate green cloth, gilt lettered spines, large decorative gilt block of mistletoe on front covers, top edges gilt. With the dust jackets. Ownership stamps on front endpapers of T. W. Latchmore, a photographer based in Hitchin, Hertfordshire (remembered for "photographing" the "Minsden Ghost" in 1907), and friend of the historian Reginald L. Hine. Jacket spines toned (and numbered by hand), a few nicks and chips, spines rolled or cocked, a few indentations to top edge of volumes I and 5, fore-edges foxed. A very good set, uncommon in the dust jackets. The definitive third edition of Frazer's classic work of social anthropology, expanded from its original two volumes to twelve; a supplementary thirteenth volume, entitled Aftermath, was published in 1937. "Frazer's true subject is nothing less than humanity's long upward struggle towards an understanding of itself and the world. In Frazer's view that movement towards the light began in earliest times with the priest?-king employing magic to compel the gods to do his bidding, followed by a religious stage in which humans admit their powerlessness and now beseech rather than command the gods. Thus for Frazer religion is a necessary stage in mental evolution, but one that is based on mistaken premisses; it has now in turn been superseded by a world-view based on rationality: positive science. In focusing on the pattern of the dying and reviving god that lay at the heart of the religions of the ancient Mediterranean, while never mentioning Christianity, Frazer was more than a little disingenuous. In truth he was engaged all the while in a covert campaign against religion in general and Christianity in particular and may perhaps be seen, along with H. G. Wells, as the most important exponent of secularism in the twentieth century" (ODNB).

Covers by Hans Arp, Sophie H. Täuber-Arp, Joan Miró, and Marcel Duchamp. With numerous black and white photographs. Issue no. 22 with original (somewhat chipped, but intact) yellow paper band reading "Revolutionary Romanticism"; Issue no. 25 with ink inscription "Wallace Liggett / April 18, 1946" on rear cover; Issue no. 26 with ink stamp of Messageries Dawson, Paris, on rear cover. Slocum & Cahoon, C-70, C-82, C-83. A few tiny chips to edge of boards, a little light soiling, No. 26 with short scratch and pencilled number on front cover, No. 25 with occasional small, faint stains to fore edge, a few (inevitable) corner creases, otherwise in fine condition, quite clean, fresh, and bright internally in very well-preserved paper wrappers. These are four important issues from Transition, a significant literary platform of modernist literature and art edited by the poet Eugene Jolas, containing excerpts from what would become "Finnegans Wake" under the title "Work in Progress." There were 27 issues published between 1927 and 1938, with contributions from leading writers and artists of the Surrealist, Dada, and Modernist schools. Issue No. 21, subtitled "An International Workshop for Orphic Creation," contains an Homage to James Joyce for his fiftieth birthday, with contributions from Samuel Beckett and Stuart Gilbert, an excerpt from "Anna Livia Plurabelle" in "basic English," and a photograph of a page of manuscript from "Work in Progress"; "Poetry is Vertical," Jolas' manifesto on writing; and the first appearance of Samuel Beckett's "Sedendo et Quiesciendo." No. 22 contains an excerpt from "Work in Progress"; the "Vertigral Documents"; "Laboratory of the Mystic Logos"; "Transition's Revolution of the Word Dictionary," featuring neologisms from Joyce and others; and a bibliography of the first 22 issues. No. 25 features a cover designed by Joan Miró; reproductions of works by Mondrian, Domela, Brancusi, Klee, Matisse, Moholy-Nagy, and Cartier-Bresson; Dylan Thomas' poem "The Mouse and the Woman"; "Dada Diary (1916-1936)"; and "Painting and Reality" with a discussion among Louis Aragon, Fernand Léger et Le Corbusier. The penultimate issue of the magazine, No. 26 is especially sought after for Marcel Duchamp's cover featuring a silver comb, which Joyce joked to Sylvia Beach was the one used to comb out "Work in Progress." It also contains an excerpt from that work, as well as poetry by James Agee and Muriel Rukeyser; photography by Man Ray, Brassai, and Weston; and a song by Aaron Copland. All are in surprisingly fine condition.

Charming set of Shakespeare's works in 40 miniature books, each measuring approximately 5 x 3,5 cm and cleverly displayed on a custom-made miniature shelf which stands 22,5 x 20 x 6,5 cm (HxWxD). 40 volumes, black rexine bindings, titled and decorated in green to spine, each with marbled endpapers, title page and illustrated frontis. Printed in Scotland for Allied Newspapers Ltd. based in London, these were offered to subscribers for a short time. Ink spill to one volume (King Henry V), otherwise in Very Good condition, the complete set, as issued with original wooden display shelf. Miniature in physical stature yet monumental in content, thirty-nine of Shakespeare's greatest works are presented herein, the editor carefully compiling from the best texts. Each play is complete with a title page and frontis illustration, further contains a summary of the play, a list of persons represented (characters), and the approximate date of composition. The set comprises 38 unique plays each in its own volume, a single volume of sonnets and poems, and a final volume which contains a list of the plays, an extensive glossary for the modern reader, and an 81-page biography of the revered seventeenth century poet, playwright, and actor. A delightful vestige of English Renaissance theatre in a darling unconventional format.         Tight Lines (Author's own copy, inscribed for his close friend and with an original ink sketch laid in)

      Tight Lines Publishers, Los Angeles 1932 - The author's own copy of his popular work on big game fishing. "Author's copy" written by Bandini on the limitation page. Inscribed beneath his frontis-portrait: "Margaret - But for your faith this work would never have been born - therefore whatever merit it possesses belongs to you. Affectionately Ralph Bandini." Inscribed for Margaret Stevenson who started at RKO as a typist and became involved with Bandini for a number of years. She assisted the author by typing his manuscripts, organizing his submissions and other secretarial work. Laid in to this copy is an original pen and ink drawing by Bandini of what looks like a bluefin tuna diving into the water. The book is bound in the original leather wrap-around covers, which have become brittle and cracked along the spine, although still holding. Top edge gilt, the others uncut. The front pictorial map end paper is nearly detached, some cracking within the text block, but otherwise a fairly tidy example. This copy has never before been offered for sale, having stayed in the family until now. Safe to say, this would easily be the crown jewel of a Bandini collection or a cornerstone of an angling collection.Ralph Bandini's "Tight Lines" vividly describes the world of big game fishing within southwestern California. A Pasadena native educated at Stanford University, Bandini pursued a career as an attorney (an O'Melveny alumn, like this cataloguer), turning later in life to building an enduring legacy within the sport of big game fishing. Within the span of seven years, Bandini composed the novels "Tight Lines" (1932), "Men, Fish, and Tackle" (1936), and "Veiled Horizons" (1939), as a personal introspection on game fishing and conservation in California. "Tight Lines" was heavily influenced by the Bandini family history in southern California and was composed with intricately detailed geography and personal experiences. In 1999, thirty-eight years after his death, Bandini was justly inducted into the International Game Fishing Association Hall of Fame. Good. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Some foxing to fore-edges, otherwise near fine and largely unopened, in very good, lightly smudged and used dust jacket. First edition, UK issue (one of ca. 1500 copies thus). Inscribed on the front free endsheet: "Siegfried Sassoon from Edith Sitwell." Sassoon and Edith Sitwell connected as early as 1917, when through Robert Ross, she wrote to him at Craiglockhart to commend him on his anti-war statement. There ensued a long acquaintance, made difficult by Sassoon's animosity toward Osbert. In 1930, she wrote him in the wake of a lapse in their friendship: "...you were one of my most intimate friends, and I have missed you more than I can say...." The following year she dedicated JANE BARSTON, one of her poems in the original Ariel Poems series, to him. The posthumous library dispersal monogram label appears on the pastedown. Surprisingly uncommon in decent condition these days, wholly apart from the particular association value of this copy. FIFOOT EA24A.

October 1932.?"The Interpretation of the Atom, Soddy?'s second book, is an analysis of the rapid developments in radioactivity and atomic theory in the early decades of the 20th century. A pioneer in atomic theory, Soddy was Rutherford?'s collaborator in, among other things, the crucial alpha-ray experiments that led to their revolutionary disintegration theory of radioactivity. Together, ?"they showed how the radioactive element thorium decayed at a fixed rate over time into a series of other elements… [which] led to the concept of ?'half life?" (Simmons, The Scientific 100 19). As a result of their experiments in radioactivity, Soddy independently became the first to recognize that chemically identical atoms of different atomic weights were all varieties of the same atom, leading him to coin the term ?"isotope?" (Jenkins-Jones, 446). In 1921, he was awarded the Nobel Prize ?"for his contributions to the knowledge of the chemistry of radioactive substances and his investigations on the occurrence and nature of isotopes?"         Autograph musical quotation signed "Karol Szymanowski" from his Symphonie concertante (Symphony No. 4, Op. 60)

      - The Symphonie Concertante, for solo piano and orchestra, was premiered in Pozna on October 9, 1932, with the composer at the piano. Although he dedicated it to the great pianist Anton Rubinstein, Szymanowski intended to perform the piece himself, on as many stages as possible, to earn money. He therefore "shaped the solo part with a view to his own performance capabilities, adjusting it to his hand; hence, the work is very different from the typical 'pianism' of contemporary concertos – those by Maurice Ravel or Prokofiev. In order to add brilliance, somewhat lacking in the piano part, Szymanowski increased the role of the orchestra, in a colourful and impressive style. so that the soloists’ figures are constantly being supplemented and "ornamented" by the picturesque and brilliant timbres of the symphonic ensemble, to a degree which goes beyond the usual convention of the concerto form and the idea of a dialogue." An early salvo in what would characterise Sino-Japanese relations in the 1930s. This publication commemorates the First Battle of Shanghai, which was the culmination of incidents beginning with the Mukden Incident the previous year where China instituted a boycott of Japanese goods. Japan's measured response was to land 70,000 troops in Shanghai in January, 1932. The Chinese resistance was fought by the 19th Route Army, who fought strenuously but ultimately had to withdraw on February 29th. Interestingly, the Chinese goverment was extremely wary of the 19th Route Army, which it viewed basically as a warlord force and actually bribed to stay out of the city itself. Peace was brokered by the League of Nations and the withdrawal of Japanese troops was agreed in exchange for Shanghai becoming a demilitarised zone. The images here depict every phase of the battle, from the Japanese taking up positions to guard against snipers to receiving fire at Canton Ka. Many of the photos were selected to show the efficacy of Japanese fighting and thus include the burning ruins of city buildings. It is only in the final pages that images of the 19th Route Army appear.

      Berlin, January 6, [18]61 2 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. In black ink on ivory stationery with Meyerbeer's monogram embossed at head. In French (with translation). Meyerbeer has not yet received the manuscript of Mignon, as he wrote Carré in a previous letter. When he reads the poem, he will tell him whether or not he likes it. Although he would very much like to collaborate with Carré, he has reservations about signing a contract to produce the work next year, at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris. "... I believe it is my duty to tell you that, as for me, it is not my habit to sign a contract or to make decisions about a work I have not yet begun. Therefore, since you need to be assured by the theater that a time has been fixed for a performance and since I cannot agree [with this plan], it would therefore be just that I grant you full liberty to dispose of your poem [as you wish], regardless of my great regret at losing your valuable collaboration in the dramatization of this beautiful work of Goethe, about which I have dreamed for so long... The manuscript of Mignon finally arrived about a week ago ?- along with an unfortunate letter from fellow librettist Jules Barbier. Convinced that Meyerbeer does not like the new adaptation of Mignon, Barbier demands that he return it. Meyerbeer is astonished; Barbier should have learned that he has only just received the work, and has barely had the opportunity to read it, let alone disapprove of it. Nevertheless, he is sending the manuscript tomorrow morning. In fact, Meyerbeer thinks rather highly of the work as a whole. "... [Barbier] tells me that he has no doubt that my opinion of the new adaptation of Mignon must be unfavorable, because, according to him, I kept it so long without arriving at a decision... I wanted to let you know, dear M. Carré, of the situation so that you understand that this return [of the manuscript] was demanded of me and that I did not make it of my own accord. There are very felicitious changes in your refashioning; there are, above all, verses of exquisite poetry; on the other hand, there are other changes of which I do not approve and which seem to me unfortunate: a part of my objections is a reflection of my own point of view; but in general, it is a very poetic and very touchinig work, charming in detail throughout, which does you the greatest honor..." Two significant letters from the collection of the noted American writer Patrick J. Smith (b. 1932). . When Meyerbeer wrote these letters, he was, "as usual... involved in several projects at once, and one of these was for incidental music to a play of Blaze de Bury, Le Jeunesse de Goethe (1860; 1862). The play was never performed and the music is lost, but Meyebeer set various Goethe texts and scenes, in particular from Faust and [the Mignon episodes from] Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre. Whether this effort was known to [Carré and Barbier,] the librettists of [Meyerbeer's opera] Dinorah, and whether that knowledge had any bearing on [these letters]... is unknown." Patrick J. El folleto está encerrado en una cartera hechos a medida. Muy escasa en cualquier condición. Un trabajo histórico sobre los derechos de las mujeres y un documento influyente en la organización del trabajo, así como la teoría feminista. Margarita Robles de Mendoza (née Margarita Robles Díaz) (1896-1954) nació en la Ciudad de México. Asistió al Colegio Normal Metodista en Puebla y obtuvo su título profesional de maestra. Hacia 1921 viajó a California graduándose como psicóloga educacional en el Pomona College de Claremont. Inmediatamente después consiguió permiso del estado de California para ejercer como maestra. Estuvo casada con el abogado Salvador Mendoza, de quien se separó, sin obtener el divorcio. Tuvo un hijo, Guillermo Mendoza, nacido en 1924. En todos sus escritos aparece con su nombre de casada. Robles refiere haberse afiliado a la Revolución Mexicana desde 1913, estando encargada de distribuir propaganda y servir de enlace para enviar mensajes de agentes estacionados en Tepic. Robles de Mendoza se declara feminista, escritora, periodista, oradora y subraya no tener conexión con ninguna secta religiosa; era conocida como una buena conferencista y aguerrida luchadora por los derechos de la mujer. Su vida transcurrió entre Washington y Nueva York donde tuvo contacto con sufragistas de la talla de Doris Stevens (1892-1963) y Alice Paul (1885-1977). Escribió artículos para periódicos y revistas y fue autora de La evolución de la mujer en México, compilación de sus conferencias, editada en 1931, Ciudadanía de la mujer mexicana, en 1932 y el mismo año el Silabario de la ciudadanía de la mujer mexicana. No contamos con datos acerca de la fecha de su fallecimiento, pero Sáenz Royo menciona en su libro escrito en 1954 que en ese entonces acababa de fallecer.

Mabel Shaw (1888-1973) was in her time the most renowned female missionary in Africa, founding the London Missionary Society's Girls' Boarding School in Mbereshi, Northern Rhodesia, and heading it from 1915 to 1940. Shaw began writing this comic fable in South Africa in February 1932 and completed it in England that October.

Original Hardcover with original dustjacket in protective Mylar. Near fine Hardcover with only minor signs of external wear. The very good dustjacket with several chips and sunned spine. It is neary impossible to find this book in its original dustjacket.. Donovan-Jerris O6340. Francis Ouimet, a twenty-year of amateur, defeated the two greatest British professionals of the day, Harry Vardon and Ted Ray, in a playoff for the 1913 U.S. Open. The stunning victory placed golf on the front page of many American newspapers for the first time. One year later, Ouimet captured the U.S. Amateur, a title he secured for a second time in 1931. Beginning with a victory in the 1914 French Amateur, and continuing for more than three decades, Francis Ouimet remained one of the great international figures in the game. He represented the United States in the first Anglo-American match at Hoylake in 1921, and participated in every Walker Cup match from 1922 to 1949. In 1951, Ouimet was named first American Captain of the R&A. Ouimet's autobiography "A Game of Golf" (1932) should be considered among the Classics of American golf biographies.
