The stunning victory placed golf on the front page of many American newspapers for the first time. One year later, Ouimet captured the U.S. Amateur, a title he secured for a second time in 1931. Beginning with a victory in the 1914 French Amateur, and continuing for more than three decades, Francis Ouimet remained one of the great international figures in the game. He represented the United States in the first Anglo-American match at Hoylake in 1921, and participated in every Walker Cup match from 1922 to 1949. In 1951, Ouimet was named first American Captain of the R&A. Ouimet's autobiography "A Game of Golf" (1932) should be considered among the Classics of American golf biographies.         Possible Existence of a Neutron [ The First Evidence of the Neutron ]

London: MacMillan and Co., Limited, 1932. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good. First Edition. lx,[1]-952, v-viii. (the entire volume 129, NATURE, Jan to June 1932) Black buckram. Small 4to. An ex-library copy bound in buckram with minimal internal markings, and one blank endpaper torn where it adhered to the adjacent blank endpaper. Cloth. The discovery of the neutron was fundamental to the evolution of Particle Physics, and its discovery revolutionized the thinking in the field. The article offered here, submitted in February as a letter to the Editor of Nature, is the first evidence of the neutron, followed in June of the same year by the more often cited paper containing detailed additional research confirming the neutron's existence (that article is often falsely identified as the first paper on the neutron). It was common for scientists, in the race for recognition and funding, to rush a shorter announcement to press in order to establish precendence for their discoveries, followed later by a more detailed technical description. The journals they submitted their discoveries to were often called "journals of record" for that reason. "In 1932, Chadwick made a fundamental discovery in the domain of nuclear science: he proved the existence of neutrons - elementary particles devoid of any electrical charge. In contrast with the helium nuclei (alpha rays) which are charged, and therefore repelled by the considerable electrical forces present in the nuclei of heavy atoms, this new tool in atomic disintegration need not overcome any electric barrier and is capable of penetrating and splitting the nuclei of even the heaviest elements. Chadwick in this way prepared the way towards the fission of uranium 235 and towards the creation of the atomic bomb. For this epoch-making discovery he was awarded the Hughes Medal of the Royal Society in 1932, and subsequently the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1935." (Nobel Prize biography) For more information, see Particle Physics, One Hundred Years of Discovery, and the Concise DSB 2nd edition.

Photo Album - Aerial Shots of Timbuktu - Reconnaissance Mission - French Air Force Squadron N.3

Timbuktu, 1932. Mali: French West Africa, 1932-1933. Album of photographs taken for reconnaissance at the behest of the colonial administrators of French West Africa, mostly being aeiral views taken by French Air Force Squadron N.3. Contains 40 black and white photographs, several with embedded captions, mounted with corners onto black cardstock leaves. Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 10.5 x 8.5 cm, and the largest 22.5 x 16 cm. Oblong 8vo. string-tied album measuring approximately 29 x 21 cm, Navy cloth boards, gilt lined to front. Very Good Condition. [Reconnaissances aeriels, 1933: photographes de l'A.O.F. (Afrique occidentale française) Escadre N.3.] A reconnaissance mission by A.O.F. Air Force Squadron N.3, in French West Africa, which also included Indochina, both then under French rule, photographs were taken from the famous Nieuport fighter aircraft by the French Air Force. The principle photographer is a co-pilot identified only by his last name - Turpin. The region was then known as part of Afrique Occidentale Française (AOF) or French West Africa. Photographs include Timbuktu, Gao, the Fort of Arouan, Hariboro, Ourozil, villages and French encampments in the Sahara desert, and the River Niger. For the purpose of irrigation and crop development in the Niger River regions of Mali, a photographic reconnaissance was initiated by the French colonial government, and effectively undertaken in 1932-1933. Views present a proposed location along the Niger for a water supply pump system, captioned 28 June 1933, "Emplacement prévue pour la pompe d'adduction d'eau du Niger." Two striking and large photographs demonstrate the erection of a large water reservoir tower, completed on 30 August 1933. [In 1932 Mali French colonial authorities planned a 2.47 million acre irrigation project, to grow cotton and rice, and to develop hydropower in the Mali desert. By 1982 only 6% of the region was developed. The World Bank took over in 1985 with some success in farming rice.] Surveys encompassed vast and desolate areas of Mali. Air Force base camps being situated in desolate Saharan regions, the album produces images of places seldom seen in photographs, and illustrates some of the operations. A large building is seen at Hariboro, where in 1917 French troops had constructed a canal, using forced labour, to provide water for the irrigation of the "plaine d'Hariboro." Also from the skies, a large group of men, presumably French troops, are marching through the desert. It would appear that this particular 'Wing' of the French Air Force was stationed at Gao, Mali, which was visited by Heinrich Barth's in 1854, and which would indeed see development from this French project. [In March 2012 Gao has been captured by the Tuareg MNLA and the Islamic activist group Ansar Dine, working together.] The first image of Gao shows crowds of Africans observing a formation of five aircraft preparing to land in a beautiful park. The earliest captioned photograph, taken 11 November 1932, captures a formal celebration taking place in Gao, the French military participating in uniform (fête des militaires français le 11 Novembre 1932, dans la ville de Gao). An encampment setup on the outlying regions of the town illustrates the expanse and the isolation. Impressive and unique views of Timbuktu (Tombouctou) show the span of the city and environs. [Timbuktu was under French rule from 1893 to 1960. On 1 April 2012, one day after the capture of Gao, Timbuktu was also captured from the Malian military by the Tuareg rebels of the MNLA and Ansar Dine.] An additional three photographs are found within the album, taken in the same time period, one being an aerial view of Pailin in Cambodia, one aerial view of the Fort de la Pompelle (Fort Herbillon) in France, and one of Dampierre-Saint-Nicolas also in France. [Fort de la Pompelle was built between 1880 and 1883 to complete the fortification belt around Reims after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Abandoned for nearly forty years after the First World War, it is now an historic monument and museum.] French governing and development of the AOF was documented in much detail in the "Bulletin de l'enseignement de l'Afrique occidentale française" - a quarterly periodical published from 1913-1933 at Gorée, now attached to the city of Dakar, Senegal. Several of these are held at the Bibliotèque nationale de France. Gao is a city in Mali and the capital of the Gao Region. The city is located on the River Niger, 320 km (200 mi) east-southeast of Timbuktu on the left bank at the junction with the Tilemsi valley. For much of its history, as early as the 9th century, Gao was an important commercial centre involved in the trans-Saharan trade. By the time of Heinrich Barth's visit in 1854, Gao had declined to become an impoverished village with 300 huts constructed from matting. The town remained small until French rule was imposed in the early twentieth century, at which time the port was expanded and a colonial base established. The French Air Force was first organized into Escadres (Wings), until this level was disbanded in the 1990's. It is now composed of Escadrons (Squadrons). In turn, each escadron is made up of several Escadrilles (Flights). The designations of many escadrilles can be traced back to their World War I heritage. Escadrilles with the N. designation, such as seen in the pilot who took these photographs, flew the Nieuport fighters.. Very Good.

Document Signed, 2 4to pp, New York, March 23, 1959

Document transfers assignment of rights to the Loew's Corporation for the work "Turnabout" by William Faulkner. Signed in full at the end on a line meant for a signature of agreement. This letter gives Loew's all rights to the story "Turnabout." It details the assignment of rights and the transfer of the assignments. It begins, "By an assignment dated September 26, 1932, I conveyed to William B. Hawks all rights of every kind... in my story... TURNABOUT, published in the March 5, 1932 issue of the Saturday Evening Post and registered for copyright... On November 4, 1932, William B. Hawks conveyed all... rights... to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer... your predecessor.... In my assignment... it was provided [that I]... secure... renewals of all copyrights...." He proceeds, "The copyright of March 1, 1932... was renewed in my name on March 4, 1959.... Accordingly, I now assign and confirm to you... the same rights in the work entitled TURNABOUT...." This agreement transferred distribution rights of the film. According to the Turner Classics Movies website, this film is listed as being distributed by Loew's who were the parent company of MGM from 1924-1959. The 1933 MGM film "Today We Live" was based on Faulkner's short story "Turnabout," originally published, as noted, in 1932. The story is about an American World War I aviator who befriends a British torpedo boat pilot and comes to see the war from a different perspective. The film, considered a romance drama, was produced and directed by Howard Hawks and starred Joan Crawford, Gary Cooper, Robert Young and Franchot Tone. Faulkner provided dialogue for the film. Hawks purchased the option on the story, but Irving Thalberg, then Vice President of MGM, forced Hawks to hire Crawford for the film and forced Faulkner to write in the character of a love interest for the men. Crawford was under contract for MGM at the time. John H. Lienhard in his article "Faulkner and Handley Page" at notes, "MGM forced director Howard Hawks to include Joan Crawford in the movie (against her wishes) and doomed it with a clumsy subplot.... The movies used Faulkner's stories, but rewrote his scripts. That was where they could mute the dark currents that haunted his stories...." All of this, plus a film that apparently included inappropriate use of non-period costumes and an unconvincing Crawford caused the film to be a failure. According to a movie review in the New York Times on April 15, 1933 by Mordaunt Hall, this "first of William Faulkner's literary efforts to reach the screen... is understood to have been amplified in the studio by the author... is at times vague and cumbersome. It possesses, however, the spark of sincerity.... As a drama of the war it is not precisely convincing, for coincidences play an important part in its arrangement. It is also anachronistic, particularly as regard the costumes worn by Joan Crawford...." That said, it is still Faulkner's first story to screen adaptation. Margin tears and stains show on right margins of both pages.

Ludendorff." - In Aufsätzen von General Erich Ludendorff, Dr. Mathilde Ludendorff (Facharzt für Psychiatrie) u.a. werden Themen behandelt wie z.B.: Blutverwurzeltes Weltbild, Schaffung einer Deutschgermanischen Führung, rassenfeindliche Lehre der Rom-Kirche, christliche Religion blutfremd und rasseleugnend, Rasseerwachen des Deutschen Volkes gleichbedeutend mit Rückkehr zu arteigener Weltanschauung, Befreiung Deutschen Blutes von artfremder Lehre, Deutscher Gottglaube aus Deutschem Blut emporwachsend, de blutverwurzelte Deutsche Gotterkenntnis das unerschütterliche Fundament zur Gestaltung einer Deutschen Kultur und eines Deutschen Rechts, Deutsche Volksschöpfung, materialistische Rassenlehren, Rom und Juda die Prediger der Weltheilslehren, Naturwissenschaftliche Rassenforschung, Keine Verquickung deutscher Sonnenwendfeiern mit Geburtstagen jüdischer Menschen!, Vertarnung des schädlichen Wirkens der Freimaurerei im Deutschen Volk, Deutsches Kunstschaffen, Moralisch verwesende Völker, 20 Jahre Vernichtungskrieg gegen Deutschland, Die Sinnerfüllung des Weltkrieges: deutsche Volksschöpfung, Die Feinde Deutscher Freiheit: Rom und Juda und ihre okkulten Werkzeuge, Macht des Rasseerbgutes, Freimaurerverrat im deutschen Heer 1914, Der völlig okkulte General v.Moltke, Christliche Grausamkeit an deutschen Frauen, Das heilige Amt der Frau und Mutter, Zum Geburtstag des Feldherrn, Die deutsche Frau in Volk und Staat, Unser Hochziel: durchgeistigte Minne, Christentum und Judentum, Wer peitscht in die Gottlosigkeit?, Das Recht der Ehescheidung, Von deutscher Tragik, Jüdische Kabbalistik als Quelle von Okkultismus und Astrologie, Das Marnedrama, Schiller und die Deutsche Frau, Aufgaben und Grenzen eines sittlichen Strafrechts, Samson und Dalila: ein Beitrag zur Frage Rasse und Kunst, Der Untergang des Inka-Reiches und seine Ursachen, Aufruf an die Völker Europas, Kirchenstaat Österreich, Sichert das geltende Strafrecht die Volkserhaltung?, Weltkrieg droht auf Deutschem Boden!, Ringen um Geistesfreiheit gegen kirchlichen Zwang, Das Zeitalter des Rokoko und die Gefahren der Volksseele, Genialität und Kunstunterricht, eine Mahnung an Deutsche Lehrkräfte, Goethe als Freimaurer, Hexenmarterung auch durch protestantische Geistliche, Vom Wesen des Deutschen Weibes, Rasse und Unterricht, Schiller-Verfälschungen, Abrüstung und Sicherheit, Schutz des Volkes vor Rassenmischung, Wie es um Rom steht, Die Stellung der Frau in Heidentum und Christentum, Die Brr Freimaurer von Weimar, Die Erziehung des begabten Kindes, Römische reichszerstörende Politik, Die Judenfrage und die Juden, Erwachen der Christen zum Rassebewusstsein, Deutsche Mutterschaft - Zwang oder Freiwilligkeit?, Die Sintflut-Sage in sumerischer und jüdischer Darstellung, Für die Wehrhaftigkeit des Deutschen Volkes, Die Gotik - ein Kind des Nordens, Der Gnadenstuhl Jahwes, Jesuitische Anmaßung, Was lehrt die "Anthroposophie" von Rudolf Steiner?, Katholische Aktion durch das Lexikon, Schutz des Volkes vor seelischer Entwurzelung, Rembrandt als Umdichter der Fremdreligion, Der Deutsche Richter, Der uranische Mensch - das Rätsel unserer Zeit, Wieder eine Bluttat aus religiösem Wahnsinn, Induziert es ihre sein durch okkulte Lehren, Tannenberg, Zarathustras Untergang.         [Photo Album]: The Bergman-Osterberg Physical Training College 1932 - 1935

Hampstead, England. 1932-1935. Oblong octavo. String-tied green leather album with stamped gilt decorations measuring 7.5" x 11". Contains 106 captioned black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 3" x 2" to 5" x 3". The album has some modest tears, and some bowing with the pages overall near fine or better with slight age toning along the edges. A photo album of Yvonne Greenwood's experience at the Bergman-Osterberg Physical Training Camp for women between 1932 and 1935. Depicted throughout are women exercising, dancing, helping one another with handstands, and playing various sports such as swimming, tennis, and netball (a sport which was created by Martina Bergman-Osterberg). The school was founded by the Swedish born Bergman-Osterberg in Hampstead in 1885, before moving to Dartford in 1895. In addition to being the first physical education instructor's college in England, attendance was limited to women. Bergman-Osterberg believed that by directly encouraging women to be active in sport and education she was helping aid in women's emancipation. Bergman-Osterberg also revolutionized the way women dressed for physical activity by replacing the corset for the gymslip which she created in 1892 and which can be seen throughout the photos. The album portrays the women of the college freely participating in activities where they were encouraged to take care of themselves and make themselves better people through the use of sport, dance, and calisthenics. The college helped contribute to the social change that was occurring throughout the 1920s and 30s. This album provides an extensive look at early women's physical education. .

Voyage au bout de la nuit EDITION ORIGINALE Grand papier ENVOI AUTOGRAPHE

Paris: Denoël & Steele, 1932. Fine. Denoël & Steele, Paris 1932, 12x19cm, broché sous étui. - Original edition, one of 100 numbered copies on alfa, ours one of the few registered copies not for sale, it printed especially for Jean Ballard, only large paper also registered with 10 Arches. Precious autograph signed by the author Jean Ballard, South Cahiers director who published the good sheets of travel just before its release, and one of the longest reports devoted to the novel. Few were those who immediately recognized the importance of this first novel. Céline yet offered his manuscript to Gallimard, Bossart, Figuière Denoël and of course that was the only one to show real enthusiasm. It does, however, drew only 2000 copies and asked various journals to publish the good sheets, the Cahiers du Sud, Europe and World a few days before publication. The registered copies of the deluxe edition on Arches or alfa, reserved for a few close of the author, are even more popular than 110 major papers put on the market. Unnumbered mostly, they have to date not been accurately counted. One can cite to date than those of R. Beckers, Mr. Dorian J. Ajalbert, L. Daudet, L. and M. Descaves (on Arches), R.-L. Doyon, L. Hennique, G. Picard, Rosny young, C. and V. Moremans Dullin, R. and J. Gallier Ballard. These copies do not contain the specifications of the ads in fine editor. Our copy is presented in a signed cabinet Julie Nadot reproducing the original cover of this book. Beautiful and rare copy. State of New York, Executive Chamber Letterhead (March 10, 1932)

1932 - Typed letter signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt (with full name) on his official governor's embossed letterhead. This letter (dated March 10, 1932) is addressed to Edward E. Spafford, Esq. and pertains to the removal of animals from the 66th Street Armory in New York City, with the notion that there would be a conflict with privately run stables. Interesting to note that the armory in question is where the New York Antiquarian Book Fair is held each April and we exhibitors often feel exactly like the animals that were penned in there eighty-plus years ago. Letter has been folded twice and is lightly age toned, top rear edge lightly stained from two paperclips. Very Good+. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
