"In this book, Hemingway has brought into focus a great deal that is significant about human living and dying, and about the trade called literature.put into this book, [are] the profound and subtle reasons why bullfighting is so wonderful to so many men.why it is moving and important and exalting. By virtue of an undismayed and undeceived honesty he has been able to see what actually happens during moments of overwhelming emotion when the exact cause of the exaltation is usually unnoticed. There are episodes of gorgeous comedy and satire.dicta about writing so honest and true.will very likely become common axioms, so vivid and sincere and convincing is their presentation."         Original Schutz-Pass: Two signed documents. Budapest, 26 September 1944

      1. An original Schutz-Pass (protective passport,), issued for Ernst J. Rappaport, born 11 September 1932, with his photo attached. The passport was designed by Wallenberg, and printed in blue and yellow (the Swedish national colors), with text in German and Hungarian, stating that the named person will travel for repatriation to Sweden and until departure is under the protection of the Swedish embassy. With the stamped seal of the Swedish Embassy in Budapest. Press numbered at the top "90/96". Signed by Wallenberg as often with a simple pen-mark, counter-signed by the Swedish ambassador to Hungary, Carl Ivan Danielsson, who was also recognized by Israel with the decoration "Righteous among the Nations" for his work in organizing the Swedish legation's rescue mission. 2. A typed and printed document, on letterhead of the Royal Swedish Embassy in Budapest, numbered "R. 03414," "Sp.: 9096," and "Liste :316," and bearing their stamped seal, signed in full by Wallenberg. In Hungarian, it reads: "To the 'National Central Authority for Supervising Foreigner', Budapest: We have the honour to inform you that the Swedish Royal Embassy in Budapest issued a protecting-passport [Schutzpass, in Hungarian: védöútlevet] to Mr. Erno J. Rappaport, by this he is identified as a Swedish subject. The Embassy kindly requests to give to the named exemption from [wearing] the yellow badge [star]. The Embassy confirms that the bilateral agreements with Sweden regarding the relevant edict is applied. Budapest, September 25, 1944. / Yours sincerely, / [signed] Raoul Wallenberg / acting for the Swedish Royal Ambassador. The Swedish Royal Secretary of the Embassy." These papers, always kept together (as evidenced by folds and paper clip marks,) saved the life of a 12 year-old Jewish boy in Budapest. "Raoul Wallenberg was the most inventive, daring, and successful rescuer of Jews from the Nazis during the period of the Final Solution," The Holocaust Encyclopedia, ed. Laqueur. From July 1944, when the 32 year-old business man-turned diplomat, from a wealthy Swedish family, arrived in Budapest, until his arrest by the Soviet Army on 17 January 1945, he issued documents which saved thousands from deportation and death. In March 1944 Hungary was occupied by German troops, and a Nazi-appointed government took power. Under the direction of Adolf Eichmann, a special unit was set up to annihilate the remaining Hungarian Jews. In May, deportations to Auschwitz began, at the rare of 12,000 per day. The Jews of Budapest were by new laws deprived of their civil rights and property, and forced to wear yellow stars. Later they were concentrated into so-called Yellow Star Houses and not allowed outside, a prelude to the ghetto and deportation. In July, after protests from the king of Sweden, the Red Cross, and the U.S. secretary of state, the deportations were stopped. During this time, the Swedish legation issued provisional passports to persons with family or business connections in Sweden, however the number permitted was small, and they then began to issue certificates declaring that application for Swedish citizenship had been made. By July some 700 passports and certificates had been issued. Ambassador Danielsson requested additional support for the legation's work, at the same time that President Roosevelt had sent Iver Olsen to Stockholm as an official representative of the American War Refugee Board, to search for a Swede willing and able to go to Budapest to organize a rescue program for the Jews. Raoul Wallenberg was selected for the assignment and arrived in Budapest on July 9. Wallenberg wanted to give protective documents to every Hungarian Jew who applied. He began issuing a new document of his own design, known as a Schutz-Pass, it was numbered. printed in yellow and blue, and bore three crowns of Sweden, and official seals and and signatures. In August 1944 Wallenberg met with Hungarian regent Miklós Horthy and won permission to issue 5000 of these passports (later increased to 7500). Hungarian authorities agreed to recognize the holders of the passports as Swedish subjects awaiting repatriation. They were allowed to live in houses rented by the legation. Long lines formed outside the Swedish embassy, and forgeries were also produced. Soon the number of Jews protected by Sweden, chiefly by Wallenberg's efforts, rose to 15 to 20 thousand. After the Arrow Cross coup in October, Wallenberg continued his work, at great personal risk, rescuing additional thousands at railway station, houses, from the forced march to Austria, and in the sealed ghetto. When the Red Army invaded Budapest in January 1945, Wallenberg was arrested on suspicion of spying for the United States, and disappeared. By his efforts he is thought to have directly saved some 25,000 persons' lives, and indirectly, another 70,000.

        DUCHAMP (Marcel) & HALBERSTADT (Vitaly)

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

The entire issue of the Physical Review, Vol. 39 #1 (Second Series), January 1, 1932 offered. Publisher's original green printed wrappers. A nice copy with minor browning to the covers and spnie panel at the extremities and some creasing to the rear wrapper. Lower corner creasing, overall minor wear. WITH 6, 135, [1 blank], 8 pages. 7 x 10 inches. The entire issue of the Physical Review, Vol. 40 #1 (Second Series), April 1, 1932 offered. Publisher's original green printed wrappers. A nice copy with minor browning to the covers and spine panel. This issue also includes an article on the further development of the cyclotron by Lawrence and Livingston. Wraps. The first article offered here announces the discovery of the deuteron, which we now know as deuterium. The second article, 15 pages long, provides far more detail on the methods used, how the concentration of the new isotope was achieved so that it could be reliably measured. Together, they detail the Discovery of Deuterium. "Deuterium (symbol D or 2H, also known as heavy hydrogen) is one of two stable isotopes of hydrogen. The nucleus of deuterium, called a deuteron, contains one proton and one neutron, whereas the far more common hydrogen isotope, protium, has no neutron in the nucleus. Deuterium has a natural abundance in Earth's oceans of about one atom in 6420 of hydrogen." (wiki) Deuterium has important applications in nuclear reactors, NMR Spectroscopy, geology, and a myriad of other areas. A further article was published in the April issue which addressed in considerably more detail the concentration of the newly discovered isotope and why that worked. "Soon after deuterium's discovery, Urey and others produced samples of "heavy water" in which the deuterium had been highly concentrated." "Harold Clayton Urey (April 29, 1893 - January 5, 1981) was an American physical chemist whose pioneering work on isotopes earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1934 for the discovery of deuterium. He played a significant role in the development of the atom bomb, but may be most prominent for his contribution to theories on the development of organic life from non-living matter...At Johns Hopkins, Urey and Arthur Ruark wrote Atoms, Quanta and Molecules (1930), one of the first English texts on quantum mechanics and its applications to atomic and molecular systems." (wiki) Most often found in bound ex-library volumes, we offer here the original issue of the Physical Review as it was published. See Ezhela, et al,, pp 64-65, (Urey 1932 and Urey 1932B) "Evidence for the deuteron" and "Discovery of the deuteron

        Southern Road

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1932. Octavo, maroon cloth lettered in silver over green paper boards, uncut, last signature unopened, original pictorial dust jacket designed by E. Simms Campbell. Small chips to corners and top edge of dust jacket, spine toned. First edition of Sterling Brown's influential first book of poems, inscribed on the front free endpaper in the year of publication: "To Miss Hilda Gottlieb, Sterling A. Brown / October, 1932." James Weldon Johnson, in his introduction, observes of Brown's poems: "he has made more than mere transcriptions of folk poetry, and he has done more than bring to it mere artistry; he has deepened its meanings and multiplied its implications." Moving deftly between poetic registers, Brown explores the rural South ("Kentucky Blues," "Southern Road," "Old King Cotton") and the urban North ("Tin Roof Blues," "Mecca," "Cabaret"), as the old agrarian way of life meets the modern black America of Ma Rainey and Jack Johnson: "Memphis go / Memphis come back, / Ain' no skin / Off de nigger's back. / All dese cities / Ashes, rust. . . . / De win' sing sperrichals / Through deir dus'." Brown would go on to serve as editor of Negro Affairs for the Federal Writers' Project; he taught at Howard University for four decades. A near-fine inscribed copy of a Harlem Renaissance classic, extremely scarce in dust jacket.

        Dancings.

Paris: E. Flammarion, 1932 - Octavo (236 × 187 mm) Original plain light card wraps within the striking "neon" lithographic wrapper, the proofs, 20 leaves (c.252 × 194 mm) loose in matching wraps. The wraps of the book a little chafed at the extremities, light toning of the text, a scatter of foxing to the fore-edge with minor encroachment to the margins, else very good; the proofs and wraps altogether very good. First published in an edition of 500, plus 25 copies hors commerce, this one of 15 offered on Madagascar - the third tier of the edition - and here accompanied by a nearly complete suite - it lacks two of the duller images - of the illustrations offered with the 10 copies on Japon impérial. Lighthearted celebration of the "flora" and "fauna" of the "dancings" - night clubs - that proliferated in Paris in the inter-war years; "The Amercanized term un dancing referred to bars, nightclubs, and cabarets of varying sizes as well as to dance halls themselves. Un dancing, it seemed, required little more than upbeat music and a bit of room to move" (Jackson, Making Jazz French, p41). Miomandre's witty text is accompanied by some splendidly lively illustrations by Henri Gazan, hand-printed by Edmond Desjobert who produced work for Picasso, Chagall and Matisse. Wonderful evocation of les années folles including a "Salut a Joséphine [Baker]" with accompanying illustration which is worth the price of admission on its own.

The Indian Round Table Conference: The Hand Colored Caricatures of Emery Kelen

[London]: NP, [ca. 1932]. 41 leaves, each 15 by 11 inches, some light toning to the edges of most, European Press service stamp on several, else in fine condition with bright colors. Technically and incomplete set, but still a substantial grouping, as evidence suggests that Kelen would market these separately to the media. Also included are two original drawings by Kelen of Goebbels and his fellow German, Franz Von Papen, probably done at the Lausanne Peace Conference in 1924. OCLC locates only three locations with a full portfolio of eight four plates. Group of 41 caricatures from the first and second Indian Round Table Conferences [1931 and 1932] organized by the British Government to discuss constitutional reforms in India. Three Indian Round Table Conferences occurred between 1930 and 1932. Kelen, who routinely worked with fellow Hungarian, Alois Derso was born in Gyor, Hungary in 1896. His and Derso's collaboration included twenty years of work in Europe and ten in the U.S. They reported on and caricatured diplomats and politicians as well as covered the activities of the League of Nations, eventually leaving Europe in 1938 primarily to escape the growing threat of anti Semitism.       Wien... Leipzig: Universal-Edition [PN U.E. 10.050]. 1932. Small folio. Original publisher's. Printed note "WEAG [Waldheim-Eberle AG)] 1930" to lower right corner of last page of music. Publisher's catalogue "Werke von Anton Webern," numbered "123" and dated "VII. [July] 1932." to verso of lower wrapper. A presentation copy, with a signed autograph inscription from the composer to title in black ink: "Dr. David Bach herzlichs überreicht von seinem Webern Nov. 1932." From the collection of the noted pianist, teacher and collector Jacob Lateiner (1928-2010), with a note laid in from the distinguished music antiquarian Albi Rosenthal (1914-2004): "for Jacob - as a souvenir of his first (and frustrating) visit to Otto Haas - Albi, London, 12 May 1967." Wrappers slightly worn and soiled. . First Edition. Moldenhauer pp. 714-15. Webern completed the present work in August 1930. Dr. David Josef Bach (1874-1947), an important figure in Viennese cultural life in the first quarter of the 20th century, was a signficiant patron of the arts, an academic, and a writer who championed the dissemination of the arts to the masses. Many important musical and visual artists were indebted to his patronage and support, including Webern, Schoenberg (who wrote an atonal birthday canon of 21 measures for him in 1934) and Oskar Kokoscha (who executed a portrait of him). "As a boy, Bach was a close friend of the young Arnold Schoenberg, who later named him as one of the three friends (the other two were Oskar Adler and Alexander von Zemlinsky) who greatly influenced him in his youthful explorations of music and literature... An active socialist dedicated to making the arts accessible to the working classes, it was D.J. Bach who instituted the Arbeiter-Symphonie-Konzerte ('Workers' Symphony Concerts') in Vienna in 1905. His wide-ranging activities earned him the hostility of right-wing groups, who denounced his artistic programme as part of a 'Jewish conspiracy' to undermine traditional Austrian culture. Such accusations were all the more vehement because D.J. Bach was also one of the earliest members of the Vienna Psychoanalytical Association which met under the aegis of Sigmund Freud and whose members were mostly Jewish... Music was, and remained, his central focus, and it was he who founded the amateur Vienna Singverein ('Vienna Choral Society') in 1919. This organisation, together with the Arbeiter-Symphonie-Konzerte and the 'Workers' Music Conservatoire', flourished until all were disbanded upon the new fascist government's outlawing of the Social Democratic Party and imposition of an authoritarian constitution in 1934. Anton Webern was active as a conductor of all musical organisations, and developed a close and enduring friendship with D.J. Bach..." Wikipedia
