Baghdad Sketches With illustrations by E N Prescott (INSCRIBED)

The Times Press Ltd., Baghdad 1932, 1932. The correct first edition of the author's first book (not published in England for a further five years). A presentation copy, inscribed by the author: "To Rose [Young] and the 'Masters of the Harsin' / with happy memories of Kuwait / from Freya Stark Nov. 1932" and with the recipient's signature inked above the inscription. 8vo. 132pp. Red cloth with paper spine and title labels. With twelve plates featuring drawings by E.N.Proscott (the English edition included a selection of Stark's photographs and a map, none of which were included in this original edition). Cloth faded at backstrip and spine label a little tanned and chipped. Cloth a little marked and chafed in places and with a small bookworm hole to the upper board and twenty subsequent leaves and another small area of nibbling to the inner hinge impacting five subsequent leaves (damn those peckish Iraqi psocoptera!). A short tear and a little accompanying creasing to the lower margin of one plate, and a touch of spotting to several of the others. Quite a bright copy of an extremely uncommon book, even more so with the presentation inscription (Stark was an extremely reluctant signer of her books). Not issued with a dust wrapper. The print run of this edition is unknown, but probably limited to 500 copies - certainly Stark, who worked for the 'Baghdad Times' throughout 1932, received no payment until 500 copies were sold. Rose Young (later Lady Rose Young) was the wife of Major Sir Hubert Winthrop Young who, in 1932, was appointed the first Minister of Baghdad and published a sympathetic book, 'The Independent Arab' (1933), detailing his diplomatic and military time in the Middle East. Stark holidayed with the Youngs and Mrs. Julian Huxley in Kuwait in early 1932. "We had our dish of rice and sheep and ate it with our fingers (Mrs. Huxley not really enjoying it) . The Youngs are charming to be out with: so pleasant and pleased with little things like beetles or sunsets or food." - from a letter to her mother, Flora Stark.. Inscribed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good.

        Baghdad Sketches

Baghdad: The Times Press Ltd, 1932. First edition. 12 plates (line drawings by E.N. Prescott). 132 pp. Original red cloth with mounted paper labels, corners lightly rubbed; binding sound, text and endpapers unmarked. Very good, this first edition was not issued with a dust jacket. First edition. 12 plates (line drawings by E.N. Prescott). 132 pp. STARK'S FIRST BOOK. The scarce first book by one of the great twentieth century travellers. Born in Paris, brought up in Devon and Italy, Stark studied history at Bedford College, University of London, then trained as a nurse and learned Arabic at the School of Oriental Studies. "In 1929 she moved to Baghdad, where she went slumming in Arab clothing and was an outsider among priggish British expatriates" (ODNB). During this time she made two journeys into the mountains of western Iran. The first took her to Luristan, which lies between Harsin and Khorramabad. Her second trip was to Ilam and the Kabirkuh mountains. The War Office made maps based on the information she brought back and her profile in the expat community rose as a result. In her authoritative work on female travellers, Jane Robinson sums up Stark's career, "In all her journeys she has been able to distill and communicate a rich philosophy of travel and to illustrate the art of travelling in time as well as place. She carries the past with her ... always teaching and learning at the same time. She is, quite simply, a classic." Howgego, S61; Robinson, Wayward Women, pp 28-30

Bobed Hair, California [sic, Bobbed Hair]

1932 - Half brown cloth and morocco with gilt-stamped lettering on spine. Fine. Contains 21 grey heavy cardstock leaves, each with a tipped-on drawing (6-by-7-inches), colored by hand, usually in watercolor and pencil. Osborn holds forth, in 19 cartoons, on the subjects of hair and California. Also includes 2 more serious drawings, both concerned with landscape and the human figure. Early original cartoons by the noted caricaturist, cartoonist and satiric commentator, Robert Osborn, who died in 1994 at age 90. Educated at the University of Wisconsin and Yale University, where he was art editor of the Yale Record, Osborn studied painting in Rome and Paris before returning to teach art and philosophy at the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut. At the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the Navy with the hope of becoming an aviator. He was assigned to an information unit under the command of the photographer Edward Steichen. As a Navy officer, he learned the art of speed drawing, and over his military career produced some 40,000 drawings for training manuals -- many of them featuring a cartoon character named Dilbert, a blunderer who violated rules of military safety. In 1946, he achieved his first public recognition for "War Is No Damn Good," said to be the first antiwar book of the nuclear age. He went on to draw for Harper's, Fortune, Life, and Look, and became a regular contributor to The New Republic. Garry Trudeau, creator of the "Doonesbury" strip, called Mr. Osborn "one of the very few masters of illustrative cartooning." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A NOTE ON COMUS [wrapper title]

London: Sidgwick & Jackson, 1932. Octavo. Sewn printed wrapper. A trace of dust soiling to wrapper, creases at two wrapper fore-corners, but near fine. First separate edition of this essay, reprinted (and newly paginated) from THE REVIEW OF ENGLISH STUDIES, VIII:30, April 1932. This is a quite early scholarly publication by Lewis, and is inexplicably uncommon in this format. OCLC/Worldcat locates a single copy (Taylor University) and COPAC returns no locations. The essay treats variations between known manuscripts of the poem, and was collected in STUDIES IN MEDIEVAL AND RENAISSANCE LITERATURE (1966). NCBEL notes its periodical appearance (under Milton).       Boston: Little, Brown & Co., 1932. First edition. Hardcover. First edition, stated. Very good or better in a very good unclipped dust jacket, with the jacket showing light edgewear, a 1/4 inch chip to the spine at crown, a chip to the lower rear jacket at the gutter, light soiling. Rear inner jacket flap clipped. A few small indentations to the lower right of the silver and black front boards, as opposed to the more common blue/light blue boards, which we believe indicates a prioirity. Lacking the very rare glassine over-jacket. This copy warmly and lengthily inscribed, signed and dated in the year and perhaps month of publication by Bel Geddes on the front pastedown. Underlining and marginalia in several sections, from which it can be surmised that the recipient of the inscription knew and/or worked with Bel Gedes on several theatrical productions. Laid in at rear is Bel Geddes obituary from the New York Times, with the corresponding oxidation marks on the rear pastedown. All in all a solid and very attractive copy of this profoundly influential title from the great designer. Uncommon in a condition of this high and order and very scarce indeed when signed-- as of the time of writing, we can not locate another signed copy.

Bobed Hair, California [sic, Bobbed Hair]

1932. Hardcover. Fine. Half brown cloth and morocco with gilt-stamped lettering on spine. Osborn "one of the very few masters of illustrative cartooning."

        Black Mischief

London: Chapman & Hall, 1932 First edition, first issue. Publisher's marble patterned red and black cloth, spine lettered in gilt; in the original cream dust jacket, lettered in black and red. Near fine, some light spotting to the page edges, else bright and clean; unclipped dust jacket, with some light toning to the spine, minor soiling to the otherwise clean wrappers, some light spotting to the flaps. Overall a, fresh and unsophisticated copy. Inspired by Waugh's own excursions to Ethiopia, Black Mischief is an imperialist satire set in Azania, a fictional island nation off of the southeastern coast of Africa. Specifically, it tells of a young emperor's attempt to modernize his home nation after returning from England where he attended Oxford. Not only do his modernization efforts not only fail utterly, however, but they also cause the nation to regress into cannibalism and ultimately become a protectorate of the United Nations. Notably, Black Mischief features Waugh's popular hero Basil Seal.. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.
