        Black Mischief

London Chapman and Hall, Ltd. 1932. 8vo. 303pp. Publisher?s combed marble-patterned cloth with gilt titles to spine, in original cream dust wrapper. A near fine copy in slightly dusty jacket showing some minor edgewear only. Most presentable. Waugh?s third novel, a controversial book which helped establish him as a master satirist. Set on the fictional African island of Azania, ?Black Mischief? is a thinly veiled reference to the then empire of Abyssinia, now Ethiopia. The novel chronicles the efforts of the English educated Emperor Seth, assisted by a fellow Oxford graduate (Waugh?s recurring character) Basil Seal, to modernize his Empire.

Profile: An Anthology Collected in MCMXXXI

Milan: John Scheiwiller, 1932. First Edition. An enormously important poetry anthology, one of only 250 copies, featuring many of the key Modernist writers of the period, including James Joyce, William Carlos Williams, W.B. Yeats, Marianne Moore, T.S. Eliot, e.e. cummings, Archibald MacLeish, Louis Zukofsky, Basil Bunting, Ford Madox Ford, and many others, with two groups of poems from the radical magazine, "New Masses." Ezra Pound, the editor of this collection, appears quite often. 8vo., 142 pages, in original green wrappers folded over stiff white blanks. A trace of foxing to the top edge and some light creasing of the wrappers, but a Near Fine copy. OCLC lists 6 copies, all in U.S. libraries. No other copies in the market as of February 2016. Gallup B28. RARE. Throughout this volume, Ezra Pound adds his personal comments about some of the poets and their works. He doesn't include any poems by Robert Frost, but instead makes this acid comment about Frost: "As a matter of history it should be stated that from 1912 Robert Frost had been producing New England Eclogues. Sincere, very dull, without tragedy, without emotion, without metrical interest, a faithful record of life without intellectual interest or any desire for anything not in it. The work, inferior to [George] Crabbe, but infinitely better than fake. A great deal of New England life is presumably as Frost records it. It is difficult to see how such life differs greatly from that of horses and sheep." (Page 46)

Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott Company, 1932. First Edition. First Printing. Octavo; red cloth, with titles stamped in black on spine and front cover; dustjacket; 317pp, [3]. Fine in a Near Fine, unclipped dustjacket, with a single short tear at lower edge of the rear panel. A superb copy of the second Detective Stephen Harper mystery, a "yellow peril" novel set in New York City. The novel has everything going for it: death, dope, detection, and torture, all set in the streets of Chinatown. And for the record (we'll spare you the gory details), there's not a damned thing funny about dying 'the laughing death.' A terrific novel by a highly underrated Black Mask author.

No Poems or Around the World Backwards and Sideways

Harper, New York 1932 - First edition. Illustrated by Gluyas Williams. Modest age-toning on the spine and edge of the rear board, tiny tears at the crown, very good without the dustwrapper. Inscribed by the author: "Dear Adele: This is for you. Bobby. November 15, 1932." Adele Lovett was a glamorous socialite, a B player in the Algonquin Round Table, a friend of Dorothy Parker's, and reportedly the lover of Robert Benchley. The intimacy of the inscription is telling; we've never before seen Benchley inscribe a book as "Bobby." [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Spring Long Shore

[Kent, CT: printed by the Meriden Gravure Company for Rex Brasher Associates, 1932. Quarto. (12 x 9 3/4 inches). 7 sheets (11 x 7 1/2 inches), with integral illustrations (6 after Brasher, 3 after photographs), mounted recto and verso of 4 sheets of larger blue-toned paper. Original card wrappers, illustrated titling to the upper cover, glassine wrapper Provenance: E. Harold Hugo (inscription on inside front cover) A unique off-print, specially prepared by Brasher for the man who shared his dream. E. Harold Hugo (1900-1985), or 'Al' as Brasher knew him, started work for Meriden Gravure Company, at 14. By the time he first met Brasher in the late 1920's he was a sales manager for the firm, and during World War II, he became general manager and in 1950 was named a director. He became president in 1969 before retiring in 1975. It is generally acknowledged that his greatest business achievement was to ensure that, under his leadership, the company won international renown for the quality of its work, but, perhaps his greatest individual business decision was to champion Rex Brasher's cause within his firm, a cause that was quickly taken up by company's president, Parker Allen. The company went on to provide (at very favourable rates) the uncoloured gravures that Brasher needed to illustrate his masterwork The Birds and Trees of North America , self-published by Brasher between 1929 and 1932, with 867 plates and numerous other illustrations. Brasher's nephew wrote of this deal: "The compact with Merdiden Gravure officers was altogether heartwarming and inspiring. Here were business men - almost total strangers, indifferent to security of any kind, willing and anxious to help a white-haired man realize a dream. ... It was ... a tribute to Rex. It was a tribute to his work. There could be no other inference. Rex could not help feeling a great flooding surge of satisfaction and new confidence" (M.E. Brasher Rex Brasher Painter of Birds p. 269). The present unique work, warmly inscribed with a small caricature self-portrait by Rex, was evidently intended by him as a small thank you to the salesmanager who became a friend. The text seems to correspond to that found in volume 11 of Rex's larger work (on Warblers, Wagtails, Pipits, etc.): the text which accompanies plates numbered 663-669 includes a narrative with the same title. The illustrated titling to the upper wrapper includes a version of the head-piece vignette on the first page of the text but is probably especially produced for this work. In effect it is a unique off-print, prepared by Brasher for Hugo because he had said how much he admired Rex's lyrical essay on the Long Island shore.

        The Odyssey.

New York: Oxford University Press, , 1932. Newly Translated into English Prose. Octavo. Original blue cloth, gilt lettered spine, gilt roundel on front cover, pale yellow top edge, others untrimmed. With the dust jacket. Mustard-coloured roundel on title page. Jacket spine faded, extremities of jacket rather tattered, spine of binding rolled and sunned at head and tail. First US edition, fifth impression. Presentation copy from Lawrence, inscribed on the blank before the title: "A. E. C. from TE Shaw, very regretfully leaving [descender of the 'y' forming an arrow pointing to:] Mount Batten. 25. iv. 33". A significant association copy: A. E. "Jock" Chambers (1896-1987) had been a naval rating on Q-ships during WWI and was a fellow airman with Lawrence in the RAF. He and Lawrence were close, Chambers visiting Clouds Hill on a number of occasions, and Lawrence let him use the place if he was not able to get there himself. There are six letters addressed to him in The Letters (1936), the tone of all of them warm and relaxed; more than once Lawrence recommends books (Melville's White Jacket, Carlyle's Sartor Resartus). Jeremy Wilson notes that in the RAF Lawrence "soon had favourites" among the younger servicemen. "Two in particular at Farnborough were A. E. Chambers and R. A. M. Guy. 'Jock' Chambers had an intelligent and enquiring mind which nowadays would undoubtedly have won him a place at university. Lawrence recognised his ability and encouraged him to educate himself through reading (Lawrence gave him a subscription to the London Library)" (Lawrence of Arabia, the Authorised Biography of T. E. Lawrence, 1989, pp. 702-03). To another of Lawrence's biographers Chambers referred to him as "my only real friend, the only one I've ever had. He was one of the finest men who've ever trod the globe, better than Christ or any of them. He hated injustice" (John E. Mack, A Prince of Our Disorder: the Life of T. E. Lawrence, 1998, p. 442). When Lawrence presented this copy of his translation of Homer to Chambers he was in his last days at RAF Mount Batten, near Plymouth, having written to Sir Philip Sassoon as early as January of 1933 that "Mount Batten is full of ghosts and sad". Following the publication of the first edition of 1932 (privately printed by Bruce Rogers in England in an edition of 530 copies) the American edition was the first to be issued as a trade edition and sold extremely well (the English trade edition followed in 1935). O'Brien notes that it "badly hurt" sales of the beautiful but expensive private press edition (published at 12 guineas).

The New Conquest of Central Asia.: A Narrative of the Explorations of the Central Asiatic Expeditions in Mongolia and China, 1921-1930.

New York 1932 - The Central Asiatic Expedition under the auspices of the American Museum of Natural History went into Mongolia to seek and discover the ancestry of man, and to explore the natural history of the region. The leader, Andrews, conducted expeditions in 1922, 1923, 1925, 1928, and 1930, on an unprecedented scale, and secured observations, records, measurements, photographs and collections which constituted materials for the many scientific papers and twelve planned volumes of final reports. This book serves as an introduction to the scientific publications of the expedition, describing how the work was done. Sven Hedin so admired the plan of this work that he used it in his own "History of the Expedition in Asia". A near fine copy in original cloth. First edition pp.l, 678, 128 plates, 3 maps.

Light and life. Address delivered at the opening meeting of the International Congress on Light Therapy in Copenhagen 15. August 1932.Copenhagen: IIe Congrès International de la Lumière, 1932.

First edition of this famous lecture, which marks Bohr's first detailed attempt to apply concepts arising from quantum mechanics (particularly complementarity) to areas outside physics. "Here, for the first time, Bohr raised a question that was to preoccupy him, off and on, until his death: Would it ever be possible to push the analysis of living processes to the limit where they can be described in terms of pure physics and chemistry?" (Pais, p. 441). Bohr's lecture can be viewed as one of the foundation stones of molecular biology in that it inspired the young physicist Max Delbrück-who was in the audience when Bohr delivered it-to switch from physics to biology. "It is fair to say that with Max, Bohr found his most influential philosophical disciple outside the domain of physics, in that through Max, Bohr provided one of the intellectual fountainheads for the development of 20th century biology" (quoted in Pais, p. 442). This pamphlet, dated 1932, apparently predates both the lecture's publication in Danish in <i>Naturens Verden</i>, in English in <i>Nature</i>, and in German in <i>Naturwissenschaften</i>, all of which were published in 1933.<br/><br/> "Bohr had a life-long interest in philosophy, publishing three volumes of philosophical essays. He was also the son of the distinguished physiologist Christian Bohr, a student of Carl Ludwig, who discovered the cooperative binding of oxygen to hemoglobin. It is therefore not entirely surprising that, when he was asked to give a lecture at the International Congress of Light Therapists in Copenhagen in August 1932, Niels Bohr chose to speak on the philosophy of biology. His lecture, the text of which was subsequently published in <i>Nature</i>, was entitled 'Light and Life'. <br/><br/> "In 'Light and Life,' Bohr noted that one of the fundamental tenets of quantum mechanics was the principle of complementarity.. 4to (236 x 158 mm), pp 10, original printed wrappers, a virtually mint copy.         L'opposition et les cases conjuguées sont réconciliées par / Opposition und Schwesterfelder sind versöhnt durch / Opposition and Sister Squares are reconcilied by DUCHAMP et HALBERSTADT.

Paris - Bruxelles, Editons de L'Echiquier, Edm. Lancel / Gaston Legrain, 1932. - 28 x 24,5 cm, 115 p., 254 fig., 7 diagrammes sur calque, bien complet des deux errata. Broché, couv. cartonnée édit. impr. en rouge. Parfait état. Rare édition originale, trilingue.- "the book is concerned with that very special point of the endgame in chess when all the pieces have been lost, only the Kings and a few pawns remain on the board. And this special 'lone-pawns' situation is treated only from the even more particular situation in which the pawns have been blocked and only the Kings can play. This situation is called zugzwang, a German term of international use that indicates this blocked position in which only certain moves, and in a limited number, are possible. In this case (pawns blocked and only the Kings being able to move), even though they make use of conclusions already established by Abbe Durand, Drtina, Bianchette, etc., Duchamp and Halberstadt are the first to have noticed the synchronisation of the moves of the black King and the white King. This synchronisation is analysed at length and forms the basis of their system. In order to win, a white King cannot move indiscriminately without regard for the colour of the square on which he finds himself. Using the terminology of the authors of the book, he must choose a 'heterodox opposition' with respect to the colour of the square occupied by the black King. This 'heterodox opposition,' which represents the real contribution of Duchamp and Halberstadt to the theory of chess, would demand a technical explanation too lengthy to be given here. At any rate, for clarity I would add that the game of chess does contain the idea of 'opposition,' and that Duchamp and Halberstadt have renamed it 'orthodox opposition' in order to distinguish it form the 'heterodox opposition' that they have discovered. This 'orthodox opposition' is something that all chess players know about, and it is far form being a mystery. It is a sure means of winning in certain situations. In fact, 'heterodox opposition' is no more than an amplification of opposition. It is simply applied to a longer number of squares, and it adopts various forms that are missing in the rigid 'orthodox opposition." (Ian Randall, Re-evaluating the Art & Chess of Marcel Duchamp).
