Bobed Hair, California [sic, Bobbed Hair]

1932 - Half brown cloth and morocco with gilt-stamped lettering on spine. Fine. Contains 21 grey heavy cardstock leaves, each with a tipped-on drawing (6-by-7-inches), colored by hand, usually in watercolor and pencil. Osborn holds forth, in 19 cartoons, on the subjects of hair and California. Also includes 2 more serious drawings, both concerned with landscape and the human figure. Early original cartoons by the noted caricaturist, cartoonist and satiric commentator, Robert Osborn, who died in 1994 at age 90. Educated at the University of Wisconsin and Yale University, where he was art editor of the Yale Record, Osborn studied painting in Rome and Paris before returning to teach art and philosophy at the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut. At the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the Navy with the hope of becoming an aviator. He was assigned to an information unit under the command of the photographer Edward Steichen. As a Navy officer, he learned the art of speed drawing, and over his military career produced some 40,000 drawings for training manuals -- many of them featuring a cartoon character named Dilbert, a blunderer who violated rules of military safety. In 1946, he achieved his first public recognition for "War Is No Damn Good," said to be the first antiwar book of the nuclear age. He went on to draw for Harper's, Fortune, Life, and Look, and became a regular contributor to The New Republic. Garry Trudeau, creator of the "Doonesbury" strip, called Mr. Osborn "one of the very few masters of illustrative cartooning." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A NOTE ON COMUS [wrapper title]

London: Sidgwick & Jackson, 1932. Octavo. Sewn printed wrapper. A trace of dust soiling to wrapper, creases at two wrapper fore-corners, but near fine. First separate edition of this essay, reprinted (and newly paginated) from THE REVIEW OF ENGLISH STUDIES, VIII:30, April 1932. This is a quite early scholarly publication by Lewis, and is inexplicably uncommon in this format. OCLC/Worldcat locates a single copy (Taylor University) and COPAC returns no locations. The essay treats variations between known manuscripts of the poem, and was collected in STUDIES IN MEDIEVAL AND RENAISSANCE LITERATURE (1966). NCBEL notes its periodical appearance (under Milton). OCLC: 39891661. NCBEL I:1252.

        Horizons

Boston: Little, Brown & Co., 1932. First edition. Hardcover. First edition, stated. Very good or better in a very good unclipped dust jacket, with the jacket showing light edgewear, a 1/4 inch chip to the spine at crown, a chip to the lower rear jacket at the gutter, light soiling. Rear inner jacket flap clipped. A few small indentations to the lower right of the silver and black front boards, as opposed to the more common blue/light blue boards, which we believe indicates a prioirity. Lacking the very rare glassine over-jacket. This copy warmly and lengthily inscribed, signed and dated in the year and perhaps month of publication by Bel Geddes on the front pastedown. Underlining and marginalia in several sections, from which it can be surmised that the recipient of the inscription knew and/or worked with Bel Gedes on several theatrical productions. Laid in at rear is Bel Geddes obituary from the New York Times, with the corresponding oxidation marks on the rear pastedown. All in all a solid and very attractive copy of this profoundly influential title from the great designer. Uncommon in a condition of this high and order and very scarce indeed when signed-- as of the time of writing, we can not locate another signed copy.

The Most Dangerous Game (Screenplay archive for the 1932 film)

Los Angeles, CA: RKO Radio Pictures, 1932. Screenplay archive for the 1932 film. Archive consists of a Revised Final script and a typescript rewrite of the film's opening sequence onboard a yacht. The rewrite credits an unknown screenwriter named "Eliscu." Based on the Richard Connell short story first published in "Colliers" in 1924. A rare set of scripts for a groundbreaking film. A deranged millionaire, living on an island, arranges for a yacht to be shipwrecked on his shores, whereupon he arranges for the survivors to be hunted. Decades ahead of its time, and almost iconoclastic in the cynicism of its subtext, Pichel and Schoedsack used ideas from their film "Gow the Headhunter (1931), and predicted their classic "King Kong" (1933), and dozens of other films that would follow using a theme of man being the hunted rather than the hunter. Revised Final script: Tan studio wrappers, noted as REVISED FINAL SCRIPT on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped PLEASE RETURN TO STORY DEPT. / RKO STUDIOS, Inc. / WEST COAST," dated May 13, 1932, with credits for story writer Conell and screenwriter Creelman. Title page integral with first page of text, with credits for Connell and Creelman. 123 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 123. Mimeograph, on onionskin stock, some leaves tan and others white. Pages Near Fine, wrapper about Near Fine, bound with three gold brads. Opening Yacht Sequence script: Blue studio wrappers, noted as OPENING YACHT SEQUENCE on the front wrapper, rubber stamped "Property of RKO STUDIOS, Inc. / Return to Scenario Dept. Files," dated July 2, 1932, with credits for story writer Conell and screenwriter Creelman, further noted as ELISCU CHANGES / Ciopied by RKO Stenographic Dept."         Profile: An Anthology Collected in MCMXXXI

Milan: John Scheiwiller, 1932. First Edition. An enormously important poetry anthology, one of only 250 copies, featuring many of the key Modernist writers of the period, including James Joyce, William Carlos Williams, W.B. Yeats, Marianne Moore, T.S. Eliot, e.e. cummings, Archibald MacLeish, Louis Zukofsky, Basil Bunting, Ford Madox Ford, and many others, with two groups of poems from the radical magazine, "New Masses." Ezra Pound, the editor of this collection, appears quite often. 8vo., 142 pages, in original green wrappers folded over stiff white blanks. A trace of foxing to the top edge and some light creasing of the wrappers, but a Near Fine copy. OCLC lists 6 copies, all in U.S. libraries. No other copies in the market as of February 2016. Gallup B28. RARE. Throughout this volume, Ezra Pound adds his personal comments about some of the poets and their works. He doesn't include any poems by Robert Frost, but instead makes this acid comment about Frost: "As a matter of history it should be stated that from 1912 Robert Frost had been producing New England Eclogues. Sincere, very dull, without tragedy, without emotion, without metrical interest, a faithful record of life without intellectual interest or any desire for anything not in it. The work, inferior to [George] Crabbe, but infinitely better than fake. A great deal of New England life is presumably as Frost records it. It is difficult to see how such life differs greatly from that of horses and sheep." (Page 46)

        LAUGHING DEATH

Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott Company, 1932. First Edition. First Printing. Octavo; red cloth, with titles stamped in black on spine and front cover; dustjacket; 317pp, [3]. Fine in a Near Fine, unclipped dustjacket, with a single short tear at lower edge of the rear panel. A superb copy of the second Detective Stephen Harper mystery, a "yellow peril" novel set in New York City. The novel has everything going for it: death, dope, detection, and torture, all set in the streets of Chinatown. And for the record (we'll spare you the gory details), there's not a damned thing funny about dying 'the laughing death.' A terrific novel by a highly underrated Black Mask author.

No Poems or Around the World Backwards and Sideways

Harper, New York 1932 - First edition. Illustrated by Gluyas Williams. Modest age-toning on the spine and edge of the rear board, tiny tears at the crown, very good without the dustwrapper. Inscribed by the author: "Dear Adele: This is for you. Bobby. November 15, 1932." Adele Lovett was a glamorous socialite, a B player in the Algonquin Round Table, a friend of Dorothy Parker's, and reportedly the lover of Robert Benchley. The intimacy of the inscription is telling; we've never before seen Benchley inscribe a book as "Bobby." [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
