      N.p.: N.p., 1932. Vintage single weight photograph of director René Clair in the midst of an outdoor shot with his cinematographer Georges Périnal on location for the 1933 film. A wonderful image, capturing Clair and Périnal as they set up the kind of shot that distinguished the director's work: viewing an intimate scene through a window from the street. This film, for which Clair wrote the screenplay, is a quintessential one for Clair, wherein a young cab driver and his flower girl neighbor fall in love in a world where all odds are against them. Georges Périnal was one of the great cinematographers in early French and European cinema, working with every major director of that time, and in particular with Clair. In addition to shooting all of Clair's major films in the 1930s, he also photographed Cocteau's "Blood of a Poet" (1932), William Cameron Menzies' "Things to Come" (1936), Michael Powell's "The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp" (1943), and Carol Reed's "The Fallen Idol" (1948). 9.5 x 8 inches (29 x 23 cm).       Seikosha, Kanda, Tokyo 1932 - First printing. 130 pp., 12mo format in blue buckram with gilt spine titles, dust jacket. Laid in: business card of Canadian author and diplomat Kenneth Kirkwood to a Canadian Trade Commissioner, both of whom lived in Tokyo in the 1930s. (Mr. Kirkwood was the author of "Unfamiliar Lafcadio Hearn", 1936.) Text is very fresh and unworn with some wear to extremities, cloth not faded or soiled, hinges tight. There extensive pencil notes to one of the stories, mostly in Japanese. These are very light and could be erased. The very fragile dust jacket is Good with considerable edge-wear and tears, some chipping, mostly to the spine-ends, some inside tape repair. A Nearly Fine/Good copy. The six stories and essays included in the book are: At a Railway Station, Literature and Political Opinion, Kusa Hibari, The Story of Miminashihoichi, The Japanese Smile, and On Reading. This book is not listed in the Trussel bibliography. When contacting Mr. Trussel we were informed tha they were not aware of this book. They kindly provided a translation of the publisher's label.         Photo album archive of original photographs from George Pal's Puppetoons studio in Hungary, circa 1932

      N.p.: N.p., 1932. Original photo album archive consisting exclusively of exquisitely shot vernacular photographs from George Pal's first major studio in Hungary, where he developed his famous Puppetoons technique of stop-motion animation. With Pal's bookplate to front free end-paper and his ownership stamp to inside front and back covers. 68 vintage photographs, all mounted with adhesive to 39 leaves, rectos only, along with some related material. Ostensibly complete. George Pal is perhaps best remembered as the producer of several science fiction and fantasy films in the 1950s, including "When Worlds Collide" (1951) and "The War of the Worlds" (1953). He also directed "Tom Thumb" (1958), "The Time Machine" (1960),and "The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm (1962). Prior to his emigration, however, Pal had a varied and successful career in Europe, where he developed the Puppetoon method. Puppetoons are a form of replacement animation, in which a series of different hand-carved wooden puppets (or puppet parts) are substituted in each frame, as opposed to traditional stop-motion animation, where a single puppet is used. Pal won an honorary Oscar in 1943 for this intricate, time consuming technique, which is illustrated here with loving accuracy, revealing Pal's methodology and vision. The majority of the photographs are production images and action stills from "Midnight" (1932), an early Pal advertising effort featuring dancing cigarettes, widely recognized as the first Puppetoon animation. In addition to the photographs from "Midnight," a set of 17 photographs titled "Heiraten und nicht verzweifeln" ("Spouses do not despair"), likely contemporary, advertising a household cleaning product. Finally, eight German press clippings on Pal and his methods are mounted to the final six leaves. A rich and handsome album, documenting at least several commercial animation projects undertaken by Pal before his emigration to the US, and likely produced for showcasing Pal's early advertising shorts to perspective clients. An exceptional record of animation history and production, illustrating the kind of methodology that is typically lost to time. Original screw bound linen boards. This music was designed to accompany a sequence in which Janet Gaynor runs wildly through the streets of New York. Over the score there are street noises that include everything from the shouts of passersby to the hammering of rivets. In the production list the title was 'Rhapsody in Rivets.' Gershwin finished his work by the end of January. Later he gave Pringle an inscribed photograph. It read: 'For Pringie - this easterner will always look West with swell thoughts of you. George. February 22, 1931'…""In the book here offered, at the end of the listing of ""Public Works of George Gershwin,"" after ""1931 / Girl Crazy"" and seven songs, is listed ""1932 / Delicious"" and four songs followed by ""Of Thee I Sing"" and five songs."

        Boléro - Autograph Musical Quotation

Rare autograph musical quotation on an album page, two measures, the instantly recognizable tune from Boléro, signed "Maurice Ravel" and dated 17/1/32 and signed additionally beneath on the same date by the important pianist so closely associated with the composer, Marguerite Long.  In fine condition, also signed on the verso by the pianist Alexander Borovsky. 5.2 x 7.5 inches [13 x 19 cm]. <br style="">The premiere of the G major Concerto by Ravel, conducted by the composer and featuring the pianist Marguerite Long, had taken place just three days prior, on January 14, 1932 at the Salle Pleyel, after which the two musicians had immediately embarked together on a European tour that would last until April. At the premiere, in a program largely repeated on the tour, the Concerto had appeared in a program of Ravel works exclusively, including Pavane pour une infante défunte and Boléro. Long herself reported that Ravel grew so tired of Boléro that when she would hum the tune in his presence he would snap: "Quit singing that," to which she would retort "Oh! my friend, you shouldn't have composed it, then!" (As quoted in Cecilia Dunoyer, "Marguerite Long: A Life in French Music, 1874-1966," p. 95)<br style="">Originally composed as a ballet commissioned by Russian actress and dancer Ida Rubinstein, the one-movement orchestral piece Boléro was premiered in 1928, and is Ravel's most famous musical composition.  Nevertheless it is surprisingly uncommon in musical quotations from the composer, perhaps, as Long reports, because he himself grew to find the tune tiresome!<br style="">

      Charles Scribner's Sons 1932 - First Edition with Scribner's Seal and Scribner's A on copyright page. Burnt orangy/brown boards with gold gilt on upper boards and spine. Author's inscription is tipped in and the cast of Tobacco Road has inscribed and signed also. In researching this I understand that the Marion Wilson Waldrip (whom this book is inscribed to) was a frequent attendee of this play and always was invited back stage to talk with the cast members. He was said to have seen this play so many times that he had rubbed an indentation with his cane in the wood floor where he was sitting. Some of the cast members that inscribed and signed this book were: Howard Banks, who played Capt. Tim. Dick Lee, (Henry Peabody) ; Henry Hull, Leon Ames, Ada Sester, Priscilla Knowles and others. Of course Erskin Caldwell also has signed a tipped in paper to: Marion Wilson Waldrip. This is a lovely copy in very nice condition. I am always happy to send detailed photographs to serious buyers. First photoplay edition. Originally published in 1913, this classic novel based on Jack The Ripper has long been ranked amongst the finest of detective fiction. This edition was released to coincide with Alfred Hitchcock's silent film adaptation, the director's first work in the thriller genre and his first major success. The film's star Ivor Novello features on the attractive dust jacket that also depicts Big Ben brooding in the gloom on the rear panel. A fabulous volume and scarce in such an attractive dust jacket.

        A Scarlet Pansy

      New York: William Faro, 1932. 8vo, pp. 370. Original red boards, with the spine label perfectly preserved. Red and black frontispiece and title-page. The slightest bumping at spine ends, otherwise a very fine copy, tight and bright, lacking the dustwrapper (which we have never seen but which is presumed to exist). First edition. Robert McAlmon was born in South Dakota in 1895 and left as soon as he could. Bookish, brilliant and homosexual, he spent three years at the University of Southern California before moving to New York in 1920, where he met William Carlos Williams working on a small poetry magazine, and worked as a nude artists' model when money was scarce. In 1921 he married the lesbian heiress Winifred Ellerman, better known as the writer Bryher. Their marriage liberated both of them, she from her family, and McAlmon from worries about money. The same year he moved to Paris, and by 1922 was working as an assistant to James Joyce, editing and typing up drafts of Ulysses. He used the marital money to found his own imprint, Contact Editions. Its first book was A Hasty Bunch (1922), McAlmon's own collection of short stories, which was quickly followed by Ernest Hemingway's debut, Three Stories and Ten Poems (1923). Contact ran for nine years and became one of the most significant expatriate literary presses of the period, publishing work by, among others, Ford Madox Ford, Gertrude Stein, William Carlos Williams, and Nathaniel West. But McAlmon's own reputation did not endure: resentful of the success of others and increasingly depressed by his own continuing obscurity, he wrote less and less, drank more and more, and eventually disappeared from the literary scene altogether. He died in 1956 in Desert Springs, California, embittered and forgotten. In 1938 McAlmon's Being Geniuses Together was published, his waspish memoir of literary life in 1920s Paris. James Joyce, who did not come out of the book well, was withering: 'the office boy's revenge', he called it. But McAlmon's real revenge on the Montparnasse literati had already appeared, six years earlier, in New York, published by a tiny publishing house, and under an assumed name. A Scarlet Pansy, by 'Robert Scully', is the story of Fay Etrange. Born in Kuntsville, Pennysylvania, Fay decamps to New York as soon as she's able, and supports herself by working as a nude model. She attends medical school with Mason Linberg, her close friend and cruising companion, and when Linberg astounds the entire cast by announcing his forthcoming marriage to one Marjorie Bull-Dike, Fay throws a lavish party for the odd couple, who then decamp to Paris. Left alone, Fay embarks on a series of lubricious encounters with, among many, many others, an Irish cop, some soldiers on leave, and an entire polo team (not the horses). At the last she finds true love with a handsome lieutenant, who in the novel's closing pages is destined to die in Fay's arms on the battlefields of France. Of course, what is obvious to all but the dimmest reader is that Fay Etrange is a man, a man with a knowingly homonymous name. The device of referring to the character as 'her' throughout the book fooled no-one but the authorities who, staggeringly, failed to prosecute. Fay, then, is the eponymous hero of A Scarlet Pansy, and the book itself is a scurrilous roman à clef, a broadside aimed at just about everyone McAlmon had ever known in Paris. 'Mason Linberg' is McAlmon himself; the medically-trained, poetry-loving Fay is based on McAlmon's close friend, the medically-trained, poetry-loving William Carlos Williams; and Mason's bride 'Marjorie Bull-Dike' is McAlmon's real-life bride-of-convenience, Bryher. The gay poet and artist Marsden Hartley appears as 'Miss Painter', while poor Elisabeth Marbury, socialite and sometime literary agent to Oscar Wilde, saw herself reincarnated as 'Elizabeth 'Clittie' Thorndike'. Lastly, McAlmon's embittered portraits of Sylvia Beach, Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas are not hard to spot among the large cast of lesbian characters he adorns with names like Fuchs, Pickup, Butsch, Godown and Kuntz. It seems unlikely James Joyce was aware of the existence of A Scarlet Pansy . It seems not to have been mentioned in any of the countless books about expatriate Paris, nor in the correspondence of those lampooned in it now held in institutional libraries around the world. A Scarlet Pansy was published in 1932 by the infamous booklegger and smut-peddler, Samuel Roth. Over the course of a long and marvellously disreputable life Roth was arrested nine times, convicted six, and spent a total of nine years in jail, mostly for obscenity and literary piracy. Roth used many different publishing imprints over the years to cover his tracks: Pansy appeared under that of 'William Faro', a pseudonym Roth also used for such classics as The Intimate Journal of Rudolph Valentino, Loose Shoulder Straps, and A Young Man About to Commit Suicide. Roth's books were sold under the counter to a select clientele. He would keep initial print runs very small to minimise his financial risk in the event of police action, and then rush out a second edition if sales demanded it and the coast was clear. Such was the case with A Scarlet Pansy: the second edition appeared very shortly after the first, as word of both its quality and its subversive nature spread. The evidence that Robert McAlmon wrote A Scarlet Pansy is overwhelming: -- The style of Pansy is of a piece with the known, published writing of McAlmon to which he put his name. Of particular interest is his short story Miss Knight, originally published by McAlmon's own Contact Editions in 1925, in the collection A Distinguished Air . The title character, a drag queen, shares both character traits and verbal tics with Fay Etrange, and reads almost as a prototype for the later character. -- Pansy is written by a writer of considerable skill, one fluent in the Modernist style, and by someone who was intimately acquainted with everyone McAlmon knew. -- The wedding party scene shares many details with the party thrown for McAlmon and Bryher on the announcement of their wedding. -- Roth and McAlmon knew each other. Both were working as poets in Greenwich VIllage during the war years; both had poems published by Harriet Monroe's magazine Poetry in 1920; both shared the same enemies, Joyce and Hemingway chief among them. Further, McAlmon was in New York in 1931, the year before Pansy was published. It seems likely the manuscript was delivered during this trip. -- By 1932, McAlmon had form as a writer of waspish romans à clef. William Carlos Williams, Marsden Hartley and Marianne Moore had all found themselves featuring, barely disguised, as characters in McAlmon's Post-Adolescence (a book in which Edna St. Vincent Millay makes an appearance 'Vera St. Vitus'). -- Most compelling is the evidence provided by John Glassco's Memoirs of Montparnasse, one of the best of all the expatriate memoirs. Glassco and his friend Graeme Taylor had arrived in Paris in 1928, when Glassco was eighteen years old. He and Taylor soon found themselves befriended by McAlmon, and in the summer of 1929 the three went on a writing holiday to Nice: 'We were all working, each on his book. Bob, wearing his hairnet almost constantly, was pouring out reams of a book which he would tell us only the title, Promiscuous Boy...' In a letter to Sylvia Beach, McAlmon had described the book he was writing: '....the life of any one of several of the boys about Paris, composite, with other characterizations and episodes therein.' The book never appeared under the title Promiscuous Boy -- or My Susceptible Friend, Adrian, another working title it carried for a while. It seems overwhelmingly likely it surfaced three years later as A Scarlet Pansy. A very early, very rare, and very funny pioneer of literary high-camp: 'The first honest and really complete story of "one of those men"', screams the dustjacket blurb to the second edition (written by the book's publisher, Samuel Roth). This, the true first, is so scarce that the second edition is often mistaken for it -- even Jay Gertzman makes the mistake in his excellent essay on the publication history of this book (see below). There are no copies in any institutional library in the UK, and this is the only copy we've seen. Compiled in 1932 by the forward thinking Los Angeles-based graphic designer and publisher Merle Armitage, this exquisitely produced book was the very first monograph on the work of pioneering California photographer Edward Weston. It features thirty-nine images by Weston, a frontispiece portrait by his son Brett, and texts by the photographer, Armitage, Lincoln Steffens, Arthur Millier, Jean Charlot, and Charles Sheeler. A presentable example of this typically fragile oversized tome (cited on page 200 of "From Fair to Fine 3: 20th Century Photography Books That Matter") limited to five hundred and fifty copies NUMBERED (143/550) AND SIGNED "Edward Weston" in black ink on the rear colophon lacking the publisher's slipcase whose white cloth spine is soiled and stained, and black boards are worn and scraped along the extremities. The hinges are solid, the textblock is tight but soiled along the edges with the signatures slightly uneven with one another. The book bears the BOLDLY SIGNED PRESENTATION "To John and Clement / new friends for old. more would be less. / I don't know what all / this means. You guess / Edward Oct. 1936" in black ink on the page facing the colophon. In addition, laid in is a BOLDLY INSCRIBED hand-written letter "John and Clem ---- / hope you took my dis - / appearance in good spirit - / I was not just sleepy, / but exhausted ------------ / See you soon I hope / yr ------ / Edward" from the photographer in pencil on a 8 ½ x 11" sheet of yellow paper that has been neatly folded in quarters, and subsequently flattened.
