        D.H. Lawrence: An Unprofessional Study

Paris: Edward W. Titus, 1932. First edition of Anaïs Nin's first book, one of 550 copies, "the first book about D.H. Lawrence by a woman." The young Nin's sympathetic reading of Lawrence would inform her own sensational diaries and fiction: "Life is a process of becoming, a combination of states we have to go through. Where people fail is that they wish to elect a state and remain in it. This is a kind of death." The year this study appeared in Paris, Nin met the American writer Henry Miller, who became an enthusiastic early reader: "Henry says I write like a man." A near-fine copy, much nicer than usually found. Octavo, original black buckram lettered in gilt, original green typographic dust jacket lettered in black and red. Title page printed in black and red, two facsimile pages from Lawrence's manuscript introduction to Lady Chatterley's Lover reprinted at 76-77. Dust jacket toned, as always, front and back panels still green.

        Good Things in England.

London, Toronto, New York: Jonathan Cape,, 1932. A Practical Cookery book for Everyday Use. Containing Traditional and Regional Recipes suited to Modern Tastes contributed by English Men and Women between 1399 and 1932. Octavo. Original beige cloth, titles to spine in blue, dark blue top-stain. With unclipped typographical dust jacket. Frontispiece and 3 other plates. Bottom corners just bumped, pale toning, else very good in very slightly rubbed jacket, short split with slight loss at the head of the spine, just biting the initial "G" of the title. First edition, first printing, with the scarce dust jacket, of this classic book by the founder of the English Folk Cookery Association. Born in 1863, White's somewhat unhappy childhood, shopping "economically for food (since the family was by then poor), waiting on her uncongenial stepmother, and teaching the three small children of her father's third marriage" (ODNB), was relieved when she was sent to Fareham "to nurse her father's two elderly sisters, formerly proprietors of the Lion Hotel and Assembly Rooms. From them, as she later described in her autobiography, she learned that 'good epicurean country-house cookery which had been handed down the family from mother to daughter since the days of Queen Elizabeth'. Her return to Fareham towards the end of her life, when she opened a cookery school there, was directly inspired by her memories of learning traditional English cooking techniques, an accomplishment of which she never ceased to be proud". Only when in her sixties "living in frugal semi-retirement in a Chelsea basement room" supported by freelance journalism, did Florence formally begin to research her lifelong passion, good, traditional English food. In 1928 she founded the English Folk Cookery Association, and in 1932 published Good Things in England, her manifesto, as well as editing the first of the association's Good Food Registers, which contained information passed on by contributors about towns, villages, hotels, restaurants, or even humble guest houses in which good English cooking or foodstuffs could be found. The book contains regional specialities as well as numerous traditional favourites, encompassing recipes from the England of Chaucer's time right up to the modern day. A couple of pages of pencilled notes loosely inserted, together with a contemporary clipped review from an unidentified source which concludes that Good Things in England is in "itself undoubtedly a Good Thing".

Nearly 300 pages of documentation with numerous official signatories: The Russian Communist Purges!

"Personal files of Red Army officers. Most of these people were repressed and later rehabilitated. They include service records, attestations, autobiographies, Party references, extracts from minutes of Party commissions for purges of Party organizations, photos and other military documents. Most - end of 1920s - 1930s. Some files contain of 20 documents other 30 or 50 ,the most interesting are the extracts from minutes of Party commissions. here are translations from extracts from similar files that may or may not be included in this archive: 1. The District Party Commission ascertained that Kopachev: 1. Kept connection with Poland till 1932; received letters and cuttings from newspapers about USSR and also the ""Selrod"" march; as he stated kept correspondence with his familiars who lived in Poland; 2. He concealed from the Party Organization that his two uncles and wife's father were convicted, one uncle dispossessed. It is ascertained by the Red Army Political Administration Kopachev till 1932 had a letter connection with his familiar Stefanovich who lived in Poland and he did not conceal about it. He concealed that his two uncles were repressed in 1929. The Political Commission of the Red Army Political Administration by its decision from 25.3.1938 restored Kopachev as a Party member. The Party Commission told off Kopachev a severe reprimand and warning for relaxing his vigilance and incomplete interpretation in autobiography in the interrogatory of his relatives. We consider necessary to discharge Kopachev from the Red Army. The Chief of the Personnel Department of the Red Army Political Administration ...The Instructor of the Department ..."" 2.""Extract of the Meeting of the Party Commission No3 for Purge of the Party Organization of the 75th Infantry Regiment. Listened: Merezhko F.A. The Battalion Commander ... At the beginning of 1920 he entered the Red Army 15th Division and was appointed a Company Commander. In June he took part in fights against Wrangel troops; was captive together with his company. As a captive he was sent to a reserve battalion where he graduated from a training crew and was appointed an assistant of the instructor of training persons. At his words he escaped to the Red Army during the retreat of Wrangel but the Commission ascertained he did not escape from the captivity. During his way he entered a Makhno detachment from which he went over to the 5th Latvian Regiment. On Dec. 1921 he was directed to Chuguev school and joined the Party at the same year but was excluded from there for accomplishment a religious rite (wedding) ...Questions: It is incomprehensible why did Merezhko escaped from the White Army being a teacher there. He must has escaped as they were pressed to the Black Sea ...The opinion of the Chief of the Commission: going over from Wrangel to the Red Army was forced. The White Army retreated and he had nowhere to go"". Speaked: - 13 persons expressed their negative opinions about him. One of them, for example:""No 9. It is evident the Merezhko relatives are not port workers. Merezhko is a careerist. He was fixed up to study all his life. He studied at the White Army too. He took a wife - a gymnasia pupil and got married in church on her wish. He was excluded from the Party because of that. Joined the Party for second time just because the Commissar told him: ""You must be in the Party"". Such a ""communist"" must have no place in the Party"". ... The Commission resolved to exclude him from the Party because of concealment of his stay at the training crew of the White Army; concealment the fact of his captivity by the Red Army after the seizure of Perecop in 1920; concealment the origin of his wife who was a daughter of a possessions manager ... supported feelings of the demoralized commanders"

Profile: An Anthology Collected in MCMXXXI

Milan: John Scheiwiller, 1932. First Edition. An enormously important poetry anthology, one of only 250 copies, featuring many of the key Modernist writers of the period, including James Joyce, William Carlos Williams, W.B. Yeats, Marianne Moore, T.S. Eliot, e.e. cummings, Archibald MacLeish, Louis Zukofsky, Basil Bunting, Ford Madox Ford, and many others, with two groups of poems from the radical magazine, "New Masses." Ezra Pound, the editor of this collection, appears quite often. 8vo., 142 pages, in original green wrappers folded over stiff white blanks. A trace of foxing to the top edge and some light creasing of the wrappers, but a Near Fine copy. OCLC lists 6 copies, all in U.S. libraries. No other copies in the market as of February 2016. Gallup B28. RARE. Throughout this volume, Ezra Pound adds his personal comments about some of the poets and their works. He doesn't include any poems by Robert Frost, but instead makes this acid comment about Frost: "As a matter of history it should be stated that from 1912 Robert Frost had been producing New England Eclogues. Sincere, very dull, without tragedy, without emotion, without metrical interest, a faithful record of life without intellectual interest or any desire for anything not in it. The work, inferior to [George] Crabbe, but infinitely better than fake. A great deal of New England life is presumably as Frost records it. It is difficult to see how such life differs greatly from that of horses and sheep." (Page 46)

Wundergarten der Natur. Neue Bilddokumente schöner Pflanzenformen

Verlag für Kunstwissenschaft, Berlin 1932 - Folio. XIII, [3]pp (text), 120 loose plates, as issued. Original grey cloth portfolio, with red lettering on spine and front cover. "Wundergarten der Natur" is the follow-up volume to "Urformen der Kunst" (1928). Karl Blossfeldt was a university teacher and used his photographs to teach formal art studies at the Royal School of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin. He photographed plants systematically with a 5 x 7" (13x18cm) view camera of his own construction. Immensely popular and profound in their simplicity, Blossfeldt's typology of plant forms drew parallels between nature and art. They were used as inspiration for jewelers, wrought iron workers, designers, craftsman, and artists worldwide. His vision is as fresh and unforgettable today as one could imagine it to be when this book was first published. As Martin Parr and Gerry Badger point out, while Blossfeldt's work was "a key model for the 'typologies' school of contemporary German was not a Conceptual work of art. It was, like so much German photography of this period, pedagogical in nature, as much founded on the Arts-and-Crafts ethos as Bauhaus principles." This portfolio is complete with its 120 striking photogravure plates, each numbered 1-120, together with 16 loose text leaves in German containing an essay by the photographer and a list of plates and titles. Some foxing along fore-edge and upper margin of portfolio. Text in German. Portfolio in overall good to good+, interior in very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Thoughts and Adventures.

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited,, 1932. Octavo. Original olive cloth, gilt lettered spine and front cover. With the dust jacket. Housed in a custom made grey-brown buckram slipcase. Portrait frontispiece of Churchill painting. A few very minor nicks and chips, light creasing to head of jacket spine. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression. The second volume of Churchill's autobiographical writings, covering his early political career, the battle of Sidney Street, a near silence on Gallipoli, service on the Western Front, the negotiation of the Irish settlement, thoughts on the "Mass effects of modern life" and life "Fifty years hence". A collection of Churchill's magazine and newspaper journalism written in the same lighter, informal style as My Early Life, the success of Thoughts and Adventures came as a considerable surprise to the publisher. Published on 10 November 1932 in a run of 4,000, three additional printings of 1,000 were required in the same month, two of them before publication, Butterworth writing to Churchill: "We are truly delighted at this success which confounds the Jonahs of the Bookselling tradeÂ…To keep pace with the increasing demand, we had to get both printers and binders to work overtime. The sheets were delivered by passenger train, and the cases were made by the binders in advance" (quoted in Cohen). A very difficult book to find in a jacket and in such superior condition.

        Booms and Depressions

1932 - FISHER, Irving. Booms and Depressions. Some First Principles. New York: Adelphi, (1932). Octavo, original green cloth. $2200.First edition of Fisher’s work connecting monetary fluctuations to extreme periods of the business cycle. In this work, Fisher puts forth the theory that booms and depressions may stem from “deranged” money, or currency that is behaving irrationally due to various value-skewing factors such as debt, hoarding, confidence, and consumption. Considered “the father of monetary economics” (Pressman, 91), “Irving Fisher was, in the opinion of many, the leading economic theorist in the United States during the first half of the 20th century. Although his contributions to economic theory and to the development of econometrics ensure him a preeminent position among contemporary economists, he was a versatile man. In his day he was equally well-known as social philosopher, teacher, inventor, businessman, and passionate crusader for many social causes” (ANB). Without scarce dust jacket, rarely found. Small notation to front free endpaper.Cloth with small stain to rear panel. An about-fine copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
