Guest Book for the Château de Suisnes

1932-1973. A guest book with entries by the cream of High Society, including Doris Duke, Wallis Simpson and Edward VIII, Perle Mesta (the "Hostess with the Mostess"; the entry was made while she was the Ambassador to Luxembourg), Millicent Hearst, Hohenlohes, Armours, and on and on. 4to. 32 by 26.5 cm. Over 230 pages chock-a-block with the inscriptions, followed by about 50 blank leaves. The chateau was a setting where super-rich Americans hobnobbed with European aristocrats, not a few of whom were originally American. Some other names we recognize: Marjorie Oelrichs, who married bandleader Eddy Duchin and was the mother of Peter Duchin, actress and then ur-interior decorator Elsie de Wolfe (signing as Elsie Mendl), decorator and Edith Wharton collaborator Ogden Codman, Margaret Copley Thaw -- the Countess of Perigny, A. Hamilton Rice, an Amazon explorer and husband to a Widener widow, various Houghtons, Brokaws, Dillons (including Douglas), Lewisohns, etc. It is a safe assumption that virtually all the guests were very wealthy, or believed to be, or very socially connected, and the names that may today be obscure would have been widely known from the society pages back when. Many of the guests were repeat visitors. Occasionally a guest would not just sign his name, but would write a short appreciation, a bon mot or stab at wit, sketch something cute, or the like. Also coming with the album are several pieces that were always separate but probably always resided within its cover. Given the abundance of bold lettered names, it remains a question mark who was the actual owner and host/hostess at the Chateau de Suisnes during this period. From the album we know that the owners were known to their friends as Wally and Kitty. Other than that, our best information based on a superficial Google search is that it was the property of the Baron de Noirmont, whose family name was Coffinhal. The Gruel binding is a highly decorative full brown morocco, with a wide border band of interlaced leaves, ruled lines and tiny tulip buds. In the center is a gilt crown and a ribbon flourish below bearing the name, "CHATEAU DE SUISNES", etched out of the gilt. The spine compartments, between the raised bands, have floral devices. The endpapers are a green silk moire. Thre are a few round stains on teh front board -- only one stands out -- probably from a resting cup. The hinge is cracked near the front, with an unlovely tape repair. Still, a most attractive album befitting a grand chateau.

        Black Mischief.

London Chapman & Hall 1932 - Limited edition, number 183 of 250 large paper copies signed by the author, large 8vo., plates and illustrations by the Author not included in the trade edition, original mauve cloth, fading to spine and margins of boards, printed dust-jacket, spine slightly darkened, some very minor fraying to head and tail of spine, but a near-fine example overall, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, preserved in custom-made slip-case. Seemingly a difficult edition to find in the dust-jacket and in such good condition. Waugh's third novel, helped to establish his reputation as a master satirist. Set on the fictional African island of Azania, the novel chronicles the efforts of Emperor Seth, assisted by the Englishman Basil Seal, to modernise his kingdom, including the issue of home-made currency and the staging of a 'Birth Control Gala'. Written by Waugh whilst staying at Madresfield Court, Worcestershire as the guest of the Lygon sisters, who after 1931 had the run of the place (their father, William Lygon, 7th Earl Beauchamp, having been forced into exile under threat of prosecution for his homosexuality) and posed for some of the drawings Waugh drew for this limited edition.         Tigris Gunboats. A narrative of the Royal Navy's co-operation with the military forces in Mesopotamia from the beginning of the War to the capture of Baghdad (1914-17).

London: Andrew Melrose Ltd., 1932 - Octavo. Original dark blue cloth, gilt lettered spine, map endpapers. With the dust jacket. Jacket with tape repairs on verso, closed-tear across spine and front panel, back panel a little soiled, a few chips and creases, label removed from binding spine, edges lightly foxed yet overall a good clean copy with the errata slip. Portrait frontispiece, 15 plates from photographs, maps in the text. First edition, first impression, very scarce in the eye-catching dust jacket. Tigris Gunboats was greeted with great enthusiasm by The Naval Review in 1932: "This is a book for which many naval officers must have looked, for the account of the work of the Royal Navy on the Tigris, as given in the Official History of Naval Operations, stops with the surrender of Kut. Nothing is told of the work of the gunboats in the re-taking of Kut and the capture of Baghdad. what a record it all is! The daring with which Espiegle remained in the river, ready to form one half of the nut-crackers; the passage of the block-ships below Basra, and the early occupation of that place; the steady movement to Ezra's Tomb; the dash to Amara, a decision worthy to rank with Farragut's "D-n the torpedoes, go ahead!" Then the fighting in the swamps, and another dash to Nasiriya The author won every distinction that can fall to a post captain. He never mentions one of these; but closes a work of the most thrilling interest, and of some quiet humour, with a full and generous word of thanks to all who had given help to him and his."         King of the Golden River, The

One of 575 copies signed by Arthur Rackham, this being copy No. 385. Octavo (8 3/4 x 5 3/4 inches; 222 x 146 mm.). 47, [1] pp. Four color plates and fifteen drawings in black and white. Original limp vellum. Pictorial endpapers in green and white. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Covers very lightly dust-soiled, otherwise a fine copy. Chemised in a green cloth slipcase with red morocco gilt lettering label.John Ruskin (1819?1900), ?English author and artist, whose The King of the Golden River might be regarded as the first English fairy story for children. Though it was not published until 1851, seven years after Francis Paget's The Hope of the Katzekopfs, it was in fact written in 1841 for 12-year-old Effie Gray, whom he later married. It is a story of the three brothers of tradition, two bad, the youngest good, and their reception of a supernatural visitor, the South West Wind. Ruskin described it himself as ?a fairly good imitation of Grimm and Dickens, mixed with some true Alpine feeling of my own?, but the South West Wind is a powerful and original character, described by Stephen Prickett [in Victorian Fantasy (1979)] as the ?first magical personage to show that combination of kindliness and eccentric irascibility that was to appear so strongly in a whole tradition of subsequent literature?. Richard Doyle, who illustrated the original edition, made a striking drawing of him. Edgar Taylor?s translation of the Grimms? stories with illustrations by George Cruikshank was published in 1823; in Praeterita Ruskin recorded how he had copied these when he was 10 or 11. The book was reissued in 1868 with an introduction by Ruskin in which he spoke of the value of the traditional tales, with their power ?to fortify children against the glacial cold of selfish science??a sentiment which lies at the heart of his own story? (The Oxford Companion to Fairy Tales).Latimore and Haskell, p. 67. Riall, p. 176.

        Sister Anne.

Philadelphia: David McKay Company,, 1932. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles and decoration to spine gilt, top edge yellow. With the dust jacket. Frontispiece and 12 illustrations by Katherine Sturges. Bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown. Spine faded, some spotting to edges of text block, contents toned. A very good copy in the jacket with some chips to spine ends and panels. First edition, first issue. With the frontispiece incorrectly published opposite p. 7, rather than than title page. A Fairy Caravan offshoot, this is Potter's version of the tale of Bluebeard. It was withdrawn from The Fairy Caravan due to its length, and Potter now offered it to McKay as a story on its own. Due to her age and poor eyesight, Potter was unwilling to undertake the illustrating of Sister Anne, but was very pleased by the pen-and-ink artwork prepared by Sturges, commenting "Do thank Katharine Sturges from me for interpreting just what I meant!" It was never formally published in the UK, though some unbound sheets were submitted for copyright purposes. It was the last of Potter's books to be published in her lifetime.

Along the upper and lower borders are portraits of authors with birth/death years. This beautiful and compelling map of America's great literary heritage was prominently featured in the Library of Congress map exhibit "The Language of the Land." Atelier stamp on verso, an docketed in pencil with sitter, the date, and the Van Vechten's reference to negative and print ("vii - 1"). Bust portrait of the author seated, in profile, on Van Vechten's sofa. Gelatin silver print. 1 vols. 25 x 20 cm. (approx 10 x 8 inches). From a rare and early series taken on the evening of March 1, 1932, when O'Neill and Carlotta dined at the home of Van Vechten and his wife Fania. None of this series is in the Library of Congress, nor at Yale (which has the negatives), and these are also among the earliest portrait photographs taken by Van Vechten in his new profession of photographer: "Anna May Wong ... was the first to come for a sitting ... Eugene O'Neill was the second caller. When he and Carlotta Monterey returned to New York, Carlo arranged for an immediate session with the Leica ...
