        Sister Anne.

Philadelphia: David McKay Company, 1932 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles and decoration to spine gilt, top edge yellow. With the dust jacket. Bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown. Spine faded, some spotting to edges of text block, contents toned. A very good copy in the jacket with some chips to spine ends and panels. Frontispiece and 12 illustrations by Katherine Sturges. First edition, first issue. With the frontispiece incorrectly published opposite p. 7, rather than than title page. A Fairy Caravan offshoot, this is Potter's version of the tale of Bluebeard. It was withdrawn from The Fairy Caravan due to its length, and Potter now offered it to McKay as a story on its own. Due to her age and poor eyesight, Potter was unwilling to undertake the illustrating of Sister Anne, but was very pleased by the pen-and-ink artwork prepared by Sturges, commenting "Do thank Katharine Sturges from me for interpreting just what I meant!" It was never formally published in the UK, though some unbound sheets were submitted for copyright purposes. It was the last of Potter's books to be published in her lifetime. Linder, p. 430; Quinby 31. [Attributes: First Edition]

Guest Book for the Château de Suisnes

, 1932-1973. 1932-1973. A guest book with entries by the cream of High Society, including Doris Duke, Wallis Simpson and Edward VIII, Perle Mesta (the "Hostess with the Mostess"; the entry was made while she was the Ambassador to Luxembourg), Millicent Hearst, Hohenlohes, Armours, and on and on. 4to. 32 by 26.5 cm. Over 230 pages chock-a-block with the inscriptions, followed by about 50 blank leaves. The chateau was a setting where super-rich Americans hobnobbed with European aristocrats, not a few of whom were originally American. Some other names we recognize: Marjorie Oelrichs, who married bandleader Eddy Duchin and was the mother of Peter Duchin, actress and then ur-interior decorator Elsie de Wolfe (signing as Elsie Mendl), decorator and Edith Wharton collaborator Ogden Codman, Margaret Copley Thaw -- the Countess of Perigny, A. Hamilton Rice, an Amazon explorer and husband to a Widener widow, various Houghtons, Brokaws, Dillons (including Douglas), Lewisohns, etc.It is a safe assumption that virtually all the guests were very wealthy, or believed to be, or very socially connected, and the names that may today be obscure would have been widely known from the society pages back when. Many of the guests were repeat visitors. Occasionally a guest would not just sign his name, but would write a short appreciation, a bon mot or stab at wit, sketch something cute, or the like. Also coming with the album are several pieces that were always separate but probably always resided within its cover. Given the abundance of bold lettered names, it remains a question mark who was the actual owner and host/hostess at the Chateau de Suisnes during this period. From the album we know that the owners were known to their friends as Wally and Kitty. Other than that, our best information based on a superficial Google search is that it was the property of the Baron de Noirmont, whose family name was Coffinhal. The Gruel binding is a highly decorative full brown morocco, with a wide border band of interlaced leaves, ruled lines and tiny tulip buds. In the center is a gilt crown and a ribbon flourish below bearing the name, "CHATEAU DE SUISNES", etched out of the gilt. The spine compartments, between the raised bands, have floral devices. The endpapers are a green silk moire. Thre are a few round stains on teh front board -- only one stands out -- probably from a resting cup. The hinge is cracked near the front, with an unlovely tape repair. Still, a most attractive album befitting a grand chateau.

        Fairy Tales.

London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd,, 1932. Quarto (262 x 189 mm). Specially bound for the publisher in green full morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, gilt lettered and panelled spine, concentric gilt panels on sides with gilt corner ornaments from designs by Rackham, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, two-line gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers (the original pictorial endpapers bound in after binder's blanks). With the publisher's card slipcase (with hand-numbered label). Colour frontispiece and 11 colour plates with captioned tissue guards, black and white illustrations in the text, by Rackham. Very slight shallow indentation to front cover. An excellent copy. Deluxe edition, number 1 of 525 copies signed by the artist. This is one of around ten "special copies" reserved by the publisher from the total edition, presented in a specially commissioned luxury binding and including a delightful full-page original pen-and-ink and watercolour drawing by Rackham (signed "Arthur Rackham 1932" and captioned "The Tinder Box"), and illustrating the opening of the story on page 155, showing the soldier hiding in a tree and the old witch holding the other end of a rope. Describing his artistic method for these "specials", Rackham pointed out that "my little sketches must inevitably be of a light hearted or joking nature... They have to be spontaneous and free handed. The nature of the paper is such that there can be no preparatory drawing and no alterations". Riall comments that "From The King of the Golden River [1932], Harrap issued nine or ten copies, seven being for sale, of a special issue of the first limitation numbers of the limited edition" (A New Bibliography of Arthur Rackham, 1994, p. xvi).

        The Sino-Japanese War in Shanghai

North-Daily News & Herald, Ltd, Shanghai 1932 - Sole edition. Cartographic endpapers, 138 photographic illustrations and 12 cartoons. 48 pp. Oblong 4to. "This album of views of the Sino-Japanese conflict at Shanghai consists principally of views taken in the field by Chinese, Japanese and British photographers. Generally speaking, few restrictions were placed on the free movement of accredited photographers during the operations, and in this sense it is a unique record of modern war at close quarters."This volume serves as a sort of companion volume to the work Sino-Japanese Disturbances published in Shanghai in the same year. Both works commemorate the First Battle of Shanghai, which was the culmination of events beginning with the Mukden Incident the previous year. Publisher's cloth backed boards, a little dusty, some minor edgewear. Very good Cartographic endpapers, 138 photographic illustrations and 12 cartoons. 48 pp. Oblong 4to

        Thoughts and Adventures

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1932. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a beautifully fine jacketed copy of the first edition, first printing ? quite scarce thus. Churchill's collection of 23 engaging essays on an incredibly wide variety of subjects was first published in 1932. It has been called "The broadest range of Churchill's thought between two hard covers" and reflects the two qualities that so characterize Churchill's life - a remarkable breadth of both mind and life experience. From the original front flap blurb: "Whether he is dealing with personal reminiscences, or telling us his views on any subject under the sun, Mr. Churchill stamps the page with his own vivid personality." In a 31 May 1932 letter to his publisher about the book, Churchill characterized it thus: "...although there is no one single theme, it has some of the best things in it I have ever written." The khaki cloth unique to the first printing of this edition is notoriously prone to scuffing, wear, and soiling, the contents proved highly susceptible to spotting, and the first printing dust jacket has become quite scarce in anything approaching collector-worthy condition. This copy is near fine in a near fine dust jacket. The dust jacket is entirely complete and unusually clean. We note only fractional wear to extremities. Spine presentation is impressive, with only a trivial hint of toning and soiling and a tiny scuff to the black rule at the spine head. Short closed tears of approximately .75 inch at the upper hinges and lower front hinge disappear beneath the removable, archival quality clear dust jacket protector. The book beneath is clean and bright as only jacketed copies can be. The khaki cloth binding is exceptional ? square, strikingly clean, and vividly bright with sharp corners. The contents remain crisp and bright. The book feels unread. We find no previous ownership marks. Differential toning to the endpapers corresponding to the dust jacket flaps confirms that this copy has spent life jacketed. Spotting endemic to this edition is exceptionally light within, where it is confined to the endsheets and prelims. Externally, spotting is light on the otherwise bright fore and bottom edges, heavier to the top edge. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A95.1.a, Woods/ICS A39(aa.1), Langworth p.156.

Quatorze Juillet [July 14] (Original photograph from the 1933 film)

N.p.: N.p., 1932. Vintage photograph of director René Clair in the midst of an outdoor shot with his cinematographer Georges Périnal on location for the 1933 film. A wonderful image, capturing Clair and Périnal as they set up the kind of shot that distinguished the director's work: viewing an intimate scene through a window from the street. This film, for which Clair wrote the screenplay, is a quintessential one for Clair, wherein a young cab driver and his flower girl neighbor fall in love in a world where all odds are against them.Georges Périnal was one of the great cinematographers in early French and European cinema, working with every major director of that time, and in particular with Clair. In addition to shooting all of Clair's major films in the 1930s, he also photographed Cocteau's "Blood of a Poet" (1932), William Cameron Menzies' "Things to Come" (1936), Michael Powell's "The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp" (1943), and Carol Reed's "The Fallen Idol" (1948).9.5 x 8 inches (29 x 23 cm). [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Marianne. Grand Hebdomadaire Littéraire Illustré. No. 1 (26 October 1932) through No. 384 (28 February 1940)

A large run of approx. 282 issues of the leftist and pacifist weekly journal, which presented itself as the journal of the French and foreign elite, founded by Gaston Gallimard and under the editorial direction of Emmanuel Berl and later Pierre Bost, featuring over 200 biting and satirical photomontages by esteemed Danish caricaturist Marinus Jakob Kjeldgaard, often depicting Hitler, Stalin, Churchill, or Mussolini, together with additional illustrations by artists including J.B. Aldebert, Frick, H.P. Gassier, and P. Orduet, and literary essays and short stories by many important writers, including Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Georges Duhamel, Georges Auric, Julien Benda, H.G. Wells, Henry de Montherlant, Roger Martin du Gard, and many others. Profusely illustrated throughout. Large folio. Self-wrpps., some staining or soiling, some later issues brittle or with damage along horizontal fold or losses along edges. Paris (Gallimard) 1932-1940. The caricatures by Marinus are perhaps the most notable feature of Marianne, as they used pieces of real photographs, works of art, movie stills, and photos taken in the Marianne studios, combined in unintended ways, to achieve images such as Hitler playing cards with Mussolini or a baby Hitler being fed by Stalin. Although Marianne was very vocal in its politics early on its run, as World War II approached the publication had to temper its opinion somewhat. However, Marinus continued his harsh criticism through caricature, commenting especially on the peace negotiations, the risk of war, and the war itself. The issues present in this group include nos. 1-239, 241-247, 306, 311, 312, 315, 318, 320, 333, 337, 339-341, 345, 348-351, 354, 355, 357, 359-363, 366-369, 371, 376-379, 381, 383, and 384. A very scarce and unusually large collection; although a handful of libraries have microfilm versions according to WorldCat, only two institutions in the United States have any physical issues in their holdings as of October 2016.

        Thoughts and Adventures.

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited,, 1932. Octavo. Original brown cloth, gilt lettered spine and front cover. With the dust jacket. Portrait frontispiece of Churchill painting. Odd spot of foxing to contents; an excellent copy in the bright jacket with slight crease to spine panel. First edition, first impression. This is the second volume of Churchill's autobiographical writings, covering his early political career, the battle of Sidney Street, a near silence on Gallipoli, service on the Western Front, the negotiation of the Irish settlement, thoughts on the "Mass effects of modern life" and life "Fifty years hence". Containing a collection of Churchill's magazine and newspaper journalism written in the same lighter, informal style as My Early Life, the success of Thoughts and Adventures came as a considerable surprise to the publisher. Published on 10 November 1932 in a run of 4,000, three additional printings of 1,000 were required in the same month, two of them before publication, Butterworth writing to Churchill: "We are truly delighted at this success which confounds the Jonahs of the Bookselling trade? To keep pace with the increasing demand, we had to get both printers and binders to work overtime. The sheets were delivered by passenger train, and the cases were made by the binders in advance" (quoted in Cohen). A very difficult book to find in a jacket and in such superior condition.
