        Love on the Dole

The printer's final copy of 'Love on the Dole', with notes and corrections by Greenwood and the earlier titles of "They Call it Love, A Tale of the Two Cities" and "The Lovers, A Tale of the Two Cities", crossed out, with the final title substituted in pencil. Age toned typewritten papers, with two trial title pages mocked up by hand, with some creasing and minor tears. It is bound in simple, seemingly fairly contemporaneous paper boards, with faux leather spine, the boards are clean, but bumped and rubbed to the edges, the spine has damage at the ends and is rubbed. It provides a fascinating insight into the final stages of the novel's development, showing that the title was far from fixed during writing and that the final title seemingly came as a flash of inspiration just prior to publication, with the hastily written pencil title replacing the two carefully lettered earlier efforts. Doubtless the novel would have been influential even without this title change, with its description of the pressures of unemployment and the humiliation inflicted by the means test, but the sheer emotive power and quotability of the phrase "Love on the Dole" must have been a factor in helping Greenwood's novel into the vanguard for social change. It is unsurprising that, along with other key works of the period, such as George Orwell's 'The Road to Wigan Pier', it is credited with contributing to popular pressure for reform which led to the eventual foundation of the welfare state.

        Topper Takes a Trip

Doubleday, Doran, Garden City 1932 - 325 pages with illustrations by Herbert F. Roese. Octavo (8" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's burgundy cloth with gilt spine lettering and front board decoratively blind stamped in original pictorial jacket. First edition. The beloved characters--mortal and immortal--of Topper return in this uproarious romp through the south of France. One of Thorne Smith's best-loved comedies, it proves once again that he is the undisputed master of urbane wit and sophisticated repartee. Cosmo Topper, the mild-mannered bank manager who was persuaded to take a walk on the wild side by the ghosts of George and Marion Kerby in Topper, finds himself reunited with his dyspeptic wife for an extended vacation on the Riviera. But he doesn't have long to enjoy the peace and quiet before the irrepressible Kerbys materialize once again and start causing fracases, confusing the citizenry, alarming the gendarmes, getting naked, and turning every occasion into revelry or melee. Soon Marion decides that Topper as a ghost would be even more laughs than Topper in the flesh. And all she needs to arrange is one simple little murder. Topper Takes a Trip is the 1938 film sequel of Topper (1937) Constance Bennett, Roland Young, Billie Burke and Alan Mowbray reprised their roles from the earlier movie; only Cary Grant was missing (other than in a few shots taken from Topper). A ghost tries to reunite a couple who she had a hand in splitting up in the prior film. It was followed by another sequel, Topper Returns (1941). Condition: Spine gilt dulled, some rubbing and mild soiling to cloth, some minor intermittent thumb-soiling in text. Jacket restored at front panel with some tape repairs to verso, jacket spine tones, some edge wear and soiling to jacket else a very good copy in like jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Astrolabes of the World Based upon the Series of Instruments in the Evans Collection in the old Ashmolean Museum at Oxford, with Notes on Astrolabes in the Collections of the British Museum, Science Museum, Sir J. Findlay, mr. S. V. Hoffman, the Mensing Collection, and in other Public and Private Collections Volume 1 The Eastern Astrolabes Volome 2 The Western Astrolabes

first edition2 vols.large 4to. (30 x 23 cms.)xviii, [2], iii, [1 (blank)], 304;viii, (305)-609, [1 (printer's slug)]pp., frontispiece plate in each volume plus 153 plates (some folding), 216 figures and photo illustrations through the text, original cream buckram, front covers handsomely gilt blocked wuth astrolabe design, spines gilt lettered, spine just a trifle darkened, lovely copy.Rare, according to Charles Batey (printer to the O.U.P.) only 250 sets were ever produced. Acknowledged by Professor Owen Gingerich (1930- ), Research Professor of Astronomy and of the History of Science at Harvard University, as "the single most comprehensive compendium on the subject which everyone seriously interested in astrolabes should own". Gunther (1869-1940), zoologist and antiquary, initially in parallel with his scientific researches at Oxford University began preoccupied with a vision for a museum of science there. "In 1917 [he] conceived the idea of restoring the Old Ashmolean building to a museum, and his enduring legacy is his foundation there in 1924 of the Museum of the History of Science. In 1915 he had begun cataloguing and photographing old or early scientific instruments and specimens which remained, frequently neglected, in college and university departments. This enabled him in 1919 to mount a temporary loan exhibition of early scientific instruments. Inspired by this exhibition, in 1924 Lewis Evans presented his valuable collection of scientific instruments and books to the university as a core around which the university's own material could be gathered for permanent display in the Old Ashmolean building. Gunther was appointed first curator of the Lewis Evans Collection, and so at the age of fifty-five he began a new career. .... In 1936 he was invited to stage an exhibition in Cambridge, similar to his venture in Oxford. This, along with his survey of the sister university's scientific instruments and memorabilia published as Early Science in Cambridge (1937), sowed the seed which became the Whipple Museum of the History of Science. ....Between 1920 and 1937 Gunther published prolifically, largely at his own expense. This included his cornucopia Early Science in Oxford (14 volumes, 1920-45). .... His Oxford Gardens (1912) and more particularly Early British Botanists and their Gardens (1922) established him as one of the great historians of botany. The Astrolabes of the World (1932), a lavishly illustrated catalogue and the first study of its kind in the field of scientific instruments, was completed after an immense correspondence. For all their shortcomings his works are primary sourcebooks full of unique material, and remain an indispensable starting point for scholars. Meanwhile, his biographies rescued men such as architect Sir Roger Pratt, botanist John Goodyear, and medieval plant painter Apuleius Barbarus from oblivion. .... Gunther was a pioneer of the new subject of history of science but .. stayed aloof from its mainstream (which was textual and philosophical). He concentrated instead on the 'archaeology of science', which was in practice the history of scientific instruments. He is undoubtedly the principal founder of this specialism as a serious academic discipline" [O.D.N.B.]. Loosely inset is an A.L.S. from Gunther, writing from Magdalen College, Oxford, 12 Dec. 1932 to Mr. Tancock, apparently a master at of Wellington College, sending him a copy of his "illustrated Chaucer" [ie. Gunther's Chaucer on the astrolabe : with the original illustrations , O.U.P., 1931], commenting on the content of that book, and suggesting that "it would be most helpful if a few of the very best schools could take the forthcoming Picture Book of Astrolabes for their Libraries. It would show the mathematicians & physicists the kind of instrument from which all angle-measuring instruments are derived, & with which the ordinary trigonometrical surveying methods were practised in the 16th century when the first 'survey maps' were being made. .... it would be kind if you would consult the Librarian as to whether he could subscribe for a copy, perhaps by some method of payment by instalments". Christopher St. J. H. Daniel was an eminent sundial designer and President of the British Sundial Society whose work includes the famous dolphin sundial at Greenwich marking the Queen's silver jubilee, the reconstruction of the vertical sundial at the Tower of London and the Sir Francis Drake commemorative stained glass sundial in Buckland Abbey.

Mayer: Einheitliche Theorie von Gravitation und Elektrizität. Zweite Abhandlung. 1932. [Weil 185]. 10 of a total of 36 "Sonderausgaben aus den Sitzungsberichten" published under Einstein's name between 1914 and 1932. Such offprints of the session reports of the Academy of Sciences (largely with independent pagination) were presented to the author by the publisher in a limited number as vouchers or dedication copies. - The present offprints date from Einstein's middle and late period at the Berlin Academy. They mainly treat the connection between gravity and electricity/electromagnetism. Einstein strove for a "unified field theory", as the General Theory of Relativity did not allow for properly integrating the electromagnetic field into the geometry of space-time. After a first attempt at a solution in 1925, Einstein tackled the problem again three years later, "only to find that Riemann's conception of space, on which the general theory was based, would not permit of a common explanation of electromagnetic and gravitational phenomena. In a series of papers devoted to the development of 'A Uniform Theory of Gravitation and Electricity' he outlined a new theory of space with a view to the unification of all forms of activity that fall within the sphere of physics, giving them a common explanation. All that would then remain to complete a scientific unison is the correlation of the organic and inorganic" (PMM 416). - The present offprints reach from the first publication after the Nobel Prize to the last but one before Einstein's leaving Germany. Three articles were published in collaboration with Einstein's assistant, Walter Mayer. - One issue with slight crease to front cover, otherwise very fine throughout.

        "I Saw Hitler!"

New York: Farrar & Rinehart, 1932. First edition. Hardcover. Jacket with amateur tape repairs along spine and top, with some loss of image.. 8vo. 42 black-and-white photographs, that with their captions form an early visual biography of Hitler. Original orange cloth; ORIGINAL PICTORIAL DUST JACKET. FIRST EDITION IN THE EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE DUST JACKET, BY "THE FIRST LADY OF AMERICAN JOURNALISM." Thompson was recognized by Time magazine in 1939 as the second most influential woman in America, after Eleanor Roosevelt. This book is the product of her interview with Adolf Hitler in Munich on 1931 - a severe underestimation of the potential of this "little man," an epithet that compelled the National Socialists to expel her from Germany in August 1934. She was the first journalist to be so treated. Thompson had been angling for an interview with Hitler since 1923, but he had little interest in foreign reporters. By late 1931, though, as his role as Germany's next leader seemed all but ensured, he agreed to meet with Thompson. Thompson's article-"I Saw Hitler!"- appeared in the March 1932 issue of Cosmopolitan, and was quickly reprinted in the present book form. Its underestimation of Hitler did much to divert focus on the reality of his terrifying potential with the American public. Her expulsion from Germany and thrice-weekly column in Ladies Home Journal rocketed her to superstardom, but "I Saw Hitler" testified to another mass delusion: that the "little man" would never be the leader he himself predicted. The dust jacket is scarcely seen in any condition. The present example preserves all of the provocative, and defamatory, text. Its damage (and subsequent repair) is relegated to the blank pictorial areas at top. The jacket text pointedly attacks the legitimacy of Hitler, and paints him as a pathetic character: "When I walked into Adolph Hitler's room, I was convinced that I was meeting the future dictator of Germany. In something less than fifty seconds I was quite sure that I was not. It took just about that time to measure the startling insignificance of this man who has set the world agog…" "Yet, see upon the platform, ungainly, insignificant, with his awkward figure and ridiculous little moustache- "-Ungainly and awkward, that is to say, until he launched upon his theme. Then the little corporal forgets himself. Literally, the spirit seems to enter him. His eyes ablaze, his hands clench; he is mocking, declamatory, pathetic, exhortatory. Never mind that what he says, read next day in cold print, reads like nonsense. "'A speaker's aim,' he says himself, 'should not be to convince philosophers and scientists, but to sway masses.'".

Photograph Album Documenting Three Cross-County Automobile Trips

United States and Canada, 1932. Photograph Album. Very good. Over 275 photographs on about 240 leaves contained in a 7" x 11.5" album. Most of the photographs measure 2.5" x 3.5", some are 3.25" x 5"; all are mounted using photo corners. The photographs and album are in nice shape. The album documents three separate lengthy automobile trips made by two young men, possibly from Traverse City, Michigan, in the early 1930s. The first begins on 1 July 1930 and follows their travel through Akron, the Allegheny Mountains, Pittsburgh, Washington DC, New York City, Plymouth, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Duluth, Montana, Glacier National Park, Idaho, Oregon, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Mojave Desert, Grand Canyon, Painted Desert, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, Yellowstone National Park, Cody, and Deadwood. The second group of photographs begins on 4 July 1931 and follows their travel through Kentucky, Nashville, St. Augustine, Daytona Beach, the Florida Keys, Clearwater, Ocala, New Orleans, San Antonio, Austin, Santa Fe, and Colorado. The third group of photographs is undated, but presumably from the summer of 1933, and follows their travels throughout Michigan including the Mackinac Straits, Upper Peninsula (St. Ignace, Manistique, Sault Ste. Marie, Forest Lake, Gladstone), Bay City, Cadillac, Benton Harbor, Manistee, Chicago Illinois, Sand Dunes Indiana, Detroit, St. Clair, and Port Huron. In addition to the expected tourist pictures, there are many photos of their car, tents, campsites, picnicking, bridges, ferries, etc.

        Public Faces A Novel

London: Constable & Co Ltd,, 1932. Octavo. Original brown cloth, titles to spine in green, green topstain. With the dust jacket. Spine a little rolled and with a crease, a few small marks to covers, topstain faded, some spots to fore-edge, endpapers partially tanned. A very good copy, in the tanned jacket with small chips along the edges. First edition, first impression of Nicolson's great (and, from the jacket blurb, seemingly prophetic) political novel: "Staged in the Foreign Office, the book describes how, during the first week of June, 1939, Great Britain becomes involved in an international crisis, which exposes her to the alternative of complete humiliation or of war against a combination of the four great powers".

A Pictorial Chart of American Literature.

Rand McNally & Company. No date. Ca. 1932. - Color pictographic / pictorial map, 26 x 38 3/4 inches on sheet size approximately 29 x 39 1/2 inches. Archivally mounted on linen, very good, bright condition with a short tear into the upper image now visible only under raking light. A highly decorative map, with images of American authors and of literary themes populating the map. Notable authors' names are listed under many cities around the country - sparsely in the West (with the exception of San Francisco) and needing a large balloon within the inset map of Massachusetts at upper right for the names of authors located in Boston and environs. Along the upper and lower borders are portraits of authors with birth/death years. This beautiful and compelling map of America's great literary heritage was prominently featured in the Library of Congress map exhibit "The Language of the Land." No date of death is given for Henry van Dyke, who died in 1933.
