Vampyr (Original French still photograph from the 1932 film)

Paris: Film-Production Carl Dreyer, 1932. Vintage double weight matte finish French still photograph from the 1932 film. Shown is Rena Mandel as Gisele. "Vampyr" was a German-French co-production, and Dreyer, who maintained strict creative control over his films, has production companies in both Berlin and Paris. This photo was issued from the Paris office, with a label crediting Film-Production Carl Dreyer affixed to verso, with the French title of "L'Etrange Aventure de David Gray," the production office's Paris address, and a credit for Mandel. The film was funded by Baron Nicholas de Gunzburg, a German aristocrat and non-professional actor who acted in the lead role under the pseudonym Julian West. Gunzburg plays a student of the occult who arrives to a small village outside of Paris. He finds the village to be rife with supernatural creatures who are luring the townspeople to suicide so that they can become servants of the devil. Dreyer's first sound film, for which dialogue had to be recorded in three languages. As a result very little dialogue was recorded and title cards used for much of the story, with most dialogue and effects added in post production. The film was shot in 1930 and 1931, but its distributor UFA delayed the debut in Berlin until May 1932, as they wanted the American film adaptations of "Dracula" and "Frankenstein" to play first. Shot on location outside of Paris in Aisne, Loiret, and Oise. 6.25 x 8.25 inches (16 x 21 cm). About Near Fine. Criterion Collection 437. Flynn, p. 41.

Die Stellung der Nationalsozialistischen Deutschen Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP) zur Judenfrage; Eine Materialsammlung vorgelegt vom Centralverein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens E.V.

Centralverein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens e.V., Berlin 1932 - Quarto. Original stiff printed wraps portfolio with seven printed folders containing loose leaves. Collection of material defining the position of the NSDAP on the Judenfrage (The Jewish Question) presented by the Central Union of German Citizens of the Jewish Faith. The material was taken from the archives of the Jewish organization and is presented strictly as quotes without judgment and commentary on the Nazi documents. It illustrates the diabolical stance, e.g. in the words of Hitler and Goebbels, and highlights the anti-Semitic position of the NSDAP. The selection of the documents for this portfolio was carried out with the utmost sense of responsibility. The publication was presented to President von Hindenburg right before the critical elections of 1932 in Germany. The seven folders are subdivided in statements of the NSDAP on the Jewish Question:a) the party program and literature, b) in spoken words, c) in plays and songs, d) in the press,e) relating to boycott, f) relating to riots, and g) petitions in the Prussian parliament. The texts are based on German newspaper reports on these topics with the section containing information on physical assaults on Jewish people from the end of 1929 to the end of 1932 representing the largest contingent of reports. Text in German, Gothic script. Tears and chips at external edges of portfolios and some rubbing, some age-toning but otherwise in near fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

The Indian Round Table Conference: The Hand Colored Caricatures of Emery Kelen

[London]: NP, [ca. 1932]. 41 leaves, each 15 by 11 inches, some light toning to the edges of most, European Press service stamp on several, else in fine condition with bright colors. Technically an incomplete set, but still a substantial grouping, as evidence suggests that Kelen would market these separately to the media. Also included are two original drawings by Kelen of Goebbels and his fellow German, Franz Von Papen, probably done at the Lausanne Peace Conference in 1924. OCLC locates only three locations with a full portfolio of eighty four plates. Group of 41 caricatures from the first and second Indian Round Table Conferences [1931 and 1932] organized by the British Government to discuss constitutional reforms in India. Three Indian Round Table Conferences occurred between 1930 and 1932. Kelen, who routinely worked with fellow Hungarian, Alois Derso was born in Gyor, Hungary in 1896. His and Derso's collaboration included twenty years of work in Europe and ten in the U.S. They reported on and caricatured diplomats and politicians as well as covered the activities of the League of Nations, eventually leaving Europe in 1938 primarily to escape the growing threat of anti Semitism. Provenance: ex Lt. Colonel V.S.M. de Guinzbourg, United Nations staffer, author of 'Wit and Wisdom of the United Nations' with his custom [?] snake skin portfolio present.

King of the Golden River, The

1932. One of 575 Copies Signed by Arthur Rackham[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. RUSKIN, John. The King of the Golden River. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. London: George Harrap & Co., [1932]. One of 575 copies signed by Arthur Rackham, this being copy No. 521. Octavo (8 3/4 x 5 3/4 inches; 222 x 146 mm.). 47, [1] pp. Four color plates and fifteen drawings in black and white. Original limp vellum. Pictorial endpapers in green and white. Top edge gilt, others uncut. A near fine, partially uncut copy. Housed in the original (slightly worn) slipcase with matching limitation number to spine.John Ruskin (1819?1900), ?English author and artist, whose The King of the Golden River might be regarded as the first English fairy story for children. Though it was not published until 1851, seven years after Francis Paget's The Hope of the Katzekopfs, it was in fact written in 1841 for 12-year-old Effie Gray, whom he later married. It is a story of the three brothers of tradition, two bad, the youngest good, and their reception of a supernatural visitor, the South West Wind. Ruskin described it himself as ?a fairly good imitation of Grimm and Dickens, mixed with some true Alpine feeling of my own?, but the South West Wind is a powerful and original character, described by Stephen Prickett [in Victorian Fantasy (1979)] as the ?first magical personage to show that combination of kindliness and eccentric irascibility that was to appear so strongly in a whole tradition of subsequent literature?. Richard Doyle, who illustrated the original edition, made a striking drawing of him. Edgar Taylor?s translation of the Grimms? stories with illustrations by George Cruikshank was published in 1823; in Praeterita Ruskin recorded how he had copied these when he was 10 or 11. The book was reissued in 1868 with an introduction by Ruskin in which he spoke of the value of the traditional tales, with their power ?to fortify children against the glacial cold of selfish science??a sentiment which lies at the heart of his own story? (The Oxford Companion to Fairy Tales).Latimore and Haskell, p. 67. Riall, p. 176.

Quatorze Juillet [July 14] (Original photograph from the 1933 film)

N.p.: N.p., 1932. Vintage single weight photograph of director René Clair in the midst of an outdoor shot with his cinematographer Georges Périnal on location for the 1933 film. A wonderful image, capturing Clair and Périnal as they set up the kind of shot that distinguished the director's work: viewing an intimate scene through a window from the street. This film, for which Clair wrote the screenplay, is a quintessential one for Clair, wherein a young cab driver and his flower girl neighbor fall in love in a world where all odds are against them. Georges Périnal was one of the great cinematographers in early French and European cinema, working with every major director of that time, and in particular with Clair. In addition to shooting all of Clair's major films in the 1930s, he also photographed Cocteau's "Blood of a Poet" (1932), William Cameron Menzies' "Things to Come" (1936), Michael Powell's "The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp" (1943), and Carol Reed's "The Fallen Idol" (1948). 9.5 x 8 inches (29 x 23 cm). In an archival mat. Fine.
