        Thoughts and Adventures.

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1932 - Octavo. Original brown cloth, gilt lettered spine and front cover. With the dust jacket. Odd spot of foxing to contents; an excellent copy in the bright jacket with slight crease to spine panel. Portrait frontispiece of Churchill painting. First edition, first impression. This is the second volume of Churchill's autobiographical writings, covering his early political career, the battle of Sidney Street, a near silence on Gallipoli, service on the Western Front, the negotiation of the Irish settlement, thoughts on the "Mass effects of modern life" and life "Fifty years hence". Containing a collection of Churchill's magazine and newspaper journalism written in the same lighter, informal style as My Early Life, the success of Thoughts and Adventures came as a considerable surprise to the publisher. Published on 10 November 1932 in a run of 4,000, three additional printings of 1,000 were required in the same month, two of them before publication, Butterworth writing to Churchill: "We are truly delighted at this success which confounds the Jonahs of the Bookselling trade To keep pace with the increasing demand, we had to get both printers and binders to work overtime. The sheets were delivered by passenger train, and the cases were made by the binders in advance" (quoted in Cohen). A very difficult book to find in a jacket and in such superior condition. Cohen A95; Woods A39(a). [Attributes: First Edition]

        Night flight.

Paris: Crosby Continential Editions, 1932. Square 16mo (16.2 cm, 6.375") 189, [3] pp. American expatriates Harry and Caresse Crosby founded the Black Sun press in Paris in 1927 to publish their own work, originally under the name "Éditions Narcisse" and with "Crosby Continential Editions" as yet another of their imprints. The press published many of the Lost Generation of American authors; in the year that this work appeared, it also printed Kay Boyle's Year Before Last, Robert McAlmon's Indefinite Huntress, Hemingway's Torrents of Spring, Faulkner's Sanctuary, and Dorothy Parker's Laments for the Living. Its stable of writers was wide, however, and included => just about anyone who was "modern" no matter the nationality.    Saint-Exupéry (1900–44) published Vol de nuit in 1931, based on his experiences as an airmail pilot and director of the Aeroposta Argentina airline. It was an instant bestseller and Stuart Gilbert's translation into English quickly followed in 1932. Here that translation carries a preface by André Gide, in the first Black Sun Press edition.    Cyril Connolly's The Modern Movement: One Hundred Key Books from England, France, and America 1880–1950 included Night Flight as one of four books for 1931. Publisher's printed wrappers. A very good copy.

        Diego Rivera: The Complete Murals

The book is NEW, NEVER OPENED, STILL SEALED IN PLASTIC FOIL. The transportation carton box is slightly damaged. * * * Diego in detail: The most comprehensive study of Rivera's work ever made A veritable folk hero in Latin America and Mexicos most important artistalong with his wife, painter Frida KahloDiego Rivera (18861957) led a passionate life devoted to art and communism. After spending the 1910s in Europe, where he surrounded himself with other artists and embraced the Cubist movement, he returned to Mexico and began to paint the large-scale murals for which he is most famous. In his murals, he addressed social and political issues relating to the working class, earning him prophetic status among the peasants of Mexico. He was invited to create works abroad, most notably in the United States, where he stirred up controversy by depicting Lenin in his mural for the Rockefeller Center in New York City (the mural was destroyed before it was finished). Riveras most remarkable work is his 1932 Detroit Industry, a group of 27 frescos at the Detroit Institute of Art in Michigan. This lavish volumethe first book to feature Riveras complete mural oeuvre, including newly discovered worksfeatures numerous large-scale details of the murals, allowing their various components and subtleties to be closely examined. In addition to the murals is a vast selection of paintings, vintage photos, documents, and drawings from public and private collections around the world many of which the whereabouts were previously unknown to scholars and whose inclusion here is thanks to the most intense research performed on Riveras work since his death. Texts include an illustrated biography and essays by prominent art historians offering interpretations of each mural. One could not ask for a more comprehensive study of Riveras oeuvre finally, a half-century after Riveras death, his work is the subject of the sweeping retrospective it deserves.

Original costume design for Rimsky-Korsakov's opera Le Coq d'Or by the noted Russian artist Alexandre Benois, in all likelihood for the character the Tsaritsa of Shemakha.

Watercolour and pencil on laid paper with partial watermark "MBM." 320 x 240 mm. Signed by the artist with initials and dated 1932 in pencil at lower left. With pencilled notes in Benois's hand. Very slightly soiled; 35 mm. tear to blank right margin repaired; remnants of mounting paper to upper corners of verso. Possibly a preparatory drawing for the Tsaritsa's costume. Rimsky-Korsakov's last opera, Coq d'Or (The Golden Cockerel) was first performed in Moscow at the Solodovnikov Theatre (Sergey Ivanovich Zimin's private opera company), on September 24/October 7, 1909. It is in a prologue, three acts, and an epilogue by Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov to a libretto by Vladimir Nikolayevich Bel'sky after the eponymous imitation folk tale in verse by Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin, based in turn on ‘The House of the Weathercock' and 'Legend of the Arabian Astrologer' from The Alhambra by Washington Irving. "The Golden Cockerel is the only one of Rimsky- Korsakov's 15 operas to have achieved repertory status beyond Russia. This was Dyagilev's doing. At the prompting of the artist Alexandre Benois, the great impresario staged the opera in Paris and London in 1914 (under the title Le coq d'or, which has stuck to it in the West), with the singers seated in rows at the sides of the stage, accompanying the movements of dancers and mimes, who enacted the plot according to the conventions of ballet d'action (choreography by Fokin)... It also set an important precedent for Stravinsky, whose opera The Nightingale, not to mention such later stage works as Renard, The Wedding and Pulcinella, to a greater or lesser extent embodied the same split between singing and movement. It was an important stage in the modernist dismantling of the Gesamtkunstwerk." Richard Taruskin in Grove Music Online. Benois is considered a seminal influence on modern ballet set and costume design. "In 1901, [he] was appointed scenic director of the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, the performance space for the Imperial Russian Ballet. He moved to Paris in 1905 and thereafter devoted most of his time to stage design and decor. During these years, his work with Diaghilev's Ballets Russes was groundbreaking. His sets and costumes for the productions of Les Sylphides (1909), Giselle (1910), and Petrushka (1911), are counted among his greatest triumphs. Although Benois worked primarily with the Ballets Russes, he also collaborated with the Moscow Art Theatre and other notable theatres of Europe." Wikipedia.

Contains 45 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs and 22 commercial photographs measuring between 2.5" x 4.5" and 3.5" x 5" with captions. Near fine album with near fine photographs.A photo album depicting a trip from Arizona to California in the summer of 1932. The album begins with photos from the Grand Canyon on June 10, 1932. One photo shows the Colorado River with a caption which reads, "one mile below rim of canyon." The photos continue with the group of travelers, most of whom are women, posing around the canyon at Powell Memorial and Hermit's rest. The group continued onward to California with an initial stop in Los Angeles at a friend's home. These photos show family and friends posing around the homes of their Californian friends including Dr. and Mrs. Frank B. Fagerburg, a progressive Baptist minister. While in California they took in the sights with pictures of palm trees and picturesque parks around Los Angeles. They also visited a lion farm and W.K. Kellogg's Arabian Horse ranch. One photo from this outing shows a man riding a horse with the caption, "the horse Rudolph Valentino rode in "The Son of the Sheik." The group then continued on to Idyllwild for a camping trip in August. These photos show the cabin they stayed in which was "elevation 5300 feet," as well as horseback riding and photos of the California mountains. The final section of the album is a collection of commercial photography collected during their trip with images from the lion farm, including the owner bottle-feeding a cub, and a photo of Death Valley. Many of these photos are from a July trip to the Bernheimer Residence and Japanese gardens placed out of order in the album. They include photos of animals, including a small group of elephants, and Japanese pagodas. An interesting collection of photographs depicting California in the 1930s with some images of the Grand Canyon.

        Free Born: An Unpublishable Novel

NY: Urquhart Press, 1932. Paperback. Very good. First Edition. 237pp, [1] ad. Crease and small tear to bottom right corner of front wrap, foxed overall with some light insect damage to the front free endpaper. Signed and dated January 1, 1932 by Nearing at the bottom of the Publisher's note. From the publisher's note: " The thesis of the book is important. No More vital issue confronts the American people than the widespread use of the black workers to break the back of the labor movement, and no aspect of the labor movement is more encouraging than the growing consciousness of labor solidarity, irrespective of race or color." "...subtitled an 'unpublishable novel' because presumably no commercial publisher would accept it, has the distinction of being, as the scholar Hugh Gloster states, 'the first revolutionary novel of Negro life,' and is further at least noteworthy for containing the most ghastly lynch scene in American literature".         Whence the "Black Irish" of Jamaica

New York: Lincoln Mac Veagh - The Dial Press, 1932. First Edition. Hardcover. Attractive copy of Williams's scholarly volume on documenting the history of Black Jamaican's who claim Irish ancestry. "Visitors to Jamaica in the British West Indies frequently remark a seeming anomaly. In even the remotest sections of the 'bush' and among the darkest of the negroes who clearly trace their ancestry back to the earliest slaves from Africa, they will find distinctively Irish names so common that in an unguarded moment they are apt to give flight to the imagination and claim that they have actually encountered a touch of the 'brogue'" (from the front flap). Uncommon in the trade, particularly in dustjacket. First Printing. Octavo (19.5cm); vertically-ribbed black cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine and publisher's logo embossed to front cover; dustjacket; xii,97,[3]pp, with photographic frontispiece and one inserted plate. Some rubbing to spine gilt, else a fresh, very Near Fine copy. Dustjacket is price-clipped, lightly edgeworn, with a few small nicks to spine ends and corners, and some faint, scattered foxing to panels; still a bright, Very Good+ example.
