The Complete Works of William Shakespeare - Miniature (complete in 40 volumes)

London: Allied Newspapers, Ltd., 1932. First Thus . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 2" tall. According to Miniature Book News #3 March, 1966, this set was originally printed about the same time as th Ellen Terry edition (Bryce) edition and the engravings are identical with exception that this (Allied) edition is printed on regular paper rather than India and is, thus, twice as thick. However, they advise that the Terry set is the smallest ever printed, so this set is right there, but for the added thickness. Each book is 2" x 1.4", the flexible boards are covered in black leatherette and have decorative end papers. Each comes with a frontispiece and a brief explanation. All are lightly rubbed and one or two have the covering cloth lifting at a corners. The set comes with a glossary volume and is housed in a wooden box with a list of all the volumes. This box is lovely, but since the set originally came in a small wooden book case, was apparently added later. In any case it makes a great addition to this uniquely collectible set. Based on some advertisements, this set was printed around 1932.

        Schweizer Berg.

Production of High Speed Light Ions Without the Use of High Voltages

Minneapolis, Minnesota: The American Physical Society, 1932. First Edition. Wraps. Near Fine. First Edition. 6, 135, [1 blank], 8 pages. 7 x 10 inches. The entire issue of the Physical Review, Vol. 40 #1 (Second Series), April 1, 1932 offered.Publisher's original green printed wrappers.A nice copy with minor browning to the covers and spine panel and a small crease to the lower corner. Wraps. The first publication of a proposed method [the cyclotron] to produce high speed protons without the use of high voltage was presented to the National Academy of Sciences in November 1930, and was published in Science in 1930 (Lawrence and Edelfson).Development was rapid, with Lawrence and Livingston (in Phys. Rev. Vol 37, p1707, 1931) publishing the results of a preliminary study of the feasibility of this method and further that testing was completed and published in August 1931 with additional proposed improvements made. The present article (starting on page 19) was published less than 6 months later, and describes the further development of the cyclotron in some depth. Together with the two earlier articles, this completes the discovery and initial application of the cyclotron as the energies generated were pushed into useful ranges. This issue also includes an article related to the discovery of deuterium by Nobel Laureate Harold Urey.Lawrence was awarded the Nobel prize for Physics in 1939 for this work, "the invention and development of the cyclotron and for results obtained with it, especially with regard to artificial radioactive elements"(nobel prize org)"A cyclotron is a type of particle accelerator ... in which charged particles accelerate outwards from the center along a spiral path. The particles are held to a spiral trajectory by a static magnetic field and accelerated by a rapidly varying (radio frequency) electric field...For several decades, cyclotrons were the best source of high-energy beams for nuclear physics experiments; several cyclotrons are still in use for this type of research. The results enable the calculation of various properties, such as the mean spacing between atoms and the creation of various collision products. Subsequent chemical and particle analysis of the target material may give insight into nuclear transmutation of the elements used in the target.Cyclotrons can be used in particle therapy to treat cancer. Ion beams from cyclotrons can be used, as in proton therapy, to penetrate the body and kill tumors by radiation damage, while minimizing damage to healthy tissue along their path. Cyclotron beams can be used to bombard other atoms to produce short-lived positron-emitting isotopes suitable for PET imaging." (wiki)Most often found in bound ex-library volumes, we offer here the original issue of the Physical Review as it was published. See Ezhela, et al,, p 60, (Lawrence 1931B).

What I Really Wrote about the War.

8vo., original green cloth. Spine sunned, ink stain on upper board, otherwise a very good copy. First US trade edition. Nancy Astor's copy with an inscription in her hand "Dearest G.B.S., Please sign for your slave, N.A" below which Shaw has written "It is all as true as ever, G. Bernard Shaw. Ayot Saint Lawrence 26 April 1947." Despite politcal differences Bernard Shaw and Nancy Astor were close friends for many years. Shaw described Nancy as "a unique and amusing phenomenon" and said that their friendship began almost instantly upon meeting; "in ten minutes we were as thick as thieves." Their correspondence shows a depth of humour. Whether Shaw's comment in his inscription refers to the content of the book or to Astor's description of herself as his slave is not totally clear.

Uncle Bill / A Tale of Two Kids and a Cowboy (SIGNED)

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York * London 1932 - Very good with no dust jacket (as usual.) 1932 date to title page matches 1932 date to copyright page. No later dates. Scribner's letter "A" and seal to copyright page -- the first edition. Cloth fraying to top of spine, and the front board corners are peeking through. The rear hinge has been competently repaired. A hard title to find signed. Signature (in blue ink) and date ('32) to 2nd blank page is in James' usual style -- the linking of the initial W to the top of the J matches the signature style shown in the frontispiece drawing -- see scans. Some report the drawing of the galloping horse at the bottom of pg. 181 identifies the "second state of the first edition," and if so this copy is a "second state," since the horse is surely there. Riding, roping, Western lore. This book will not be shipped to California addresses. 241 pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Genuine first edition of the thesis of Jacques Lacan he was not drawn large and uncommon papiers.Très nice autograph dedication of the author scientist Marcel Boll: ".
