        The Art of Edward Weston

New York: [Will A. Kistler Company] for E. Weyhe, 1932. A fine presentation copy of the limited edition, number 48 of 550 copies, printed on Artisan enamel paper by Champion Paper, photographic reproductions by the Los Angeles Engraving company, binding by Earle A. Gray. Light toning and wear to binding, some pale foxing as often, lacks original slicpase but with modern cloth slipcase. Folio. Foreword by Charles Sheeler, Appreciation by Lincoln Steffens, Prophecy by Arthur Miller, Estimate by Jean Charlot. 12pp. text, 39 photographic plates. Original printed paper-backed black boards. A fine presentation copy, inscribed by Weston to Lewis Milestone on the epigraph leaf facing the title. Milestone (1890-1980) is renowned for his direction of 'Two Arabian Knights' (1927) and 'All Quiet on the Western Front' (1930) -- both of which received Academy Awards for Best Director. Milestone apparently re-gifted the book, as the half-title bears his inscription "To the Roberts, Milly." A fine association, linking Weston (who early in his career worked in Hollywood doing stills for films) to the celebrated director Lewis Milestone.

The Lapp Woman wrote few words on a dried Stockfish

[London]: , 1932 - Little Gerda and the Lapp Woman from "The Snow Queen"Illustrated on page 32 of Arthur Rackham's Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales (1932)RACKHAM, Arthur, artist. "The Lapp Woman wrote few words on a dried Stockfish" [London, 1932.]. Original pen, ink and blue watercolor drawing, signed lower right. Image size: 8 x 7 1/2 inches: 204 x 191 mm.Published as the black & white illustration on page 74 of Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales Illustrated by Arthur Rackham, [London, 1932]."And when little Gerda had been warmed, and had had something to eat and drink, the Lapp woman wrote a few words on a dried stockfish, bidding Gerda to take good care of it, tied her on the reindeer again, and away they went. Flash! Flash! it went up in the sky. All night long burned the beautiful blue Northern Lights"In this marvelous watercolor, Gerda and the Lapp woman are sitting in the little hut which has vegetables hanging from the low wooden beams. Gerda is dressed in a pretty blue and white dotted dress, and is sitting with a bowl and spoon on her lap. She is looking at the Lapp woman who is holding the dried stockfish, writing on it with a quill. The Lapp woman is dressed in a red top, blue skirt and red and blue striped headscarf, and is wearing big round glasses on her long nose. The Lapp woman with her wizened hands and feet are the focal point of the picture, the whole scene giving the impression of warmth and intimacy between the little girl and the Lapp woman. This fine watercolor appeared in the book on page 74 as a black and white drawing. As was often the case, Arthur Rackham has added background and full watercolor to the image in order to enhance its salability. Provenance: Labels on back of frame: Ernst Brown & Phillips, Ltd., The Leecester Gallery, London [1932]; The Fine Art Society Ltd., London, June 1972; Sheffield City Art Gallery - December 1979 - April 1980; Colin White 1979-2017.         Picture Map of China. ????

New York. Friendship Press. 1932. Wall-sized pictorial map, 37 1/4 x 48 1/2 inches on sheet 38 1/4 x 49 3/4 inches (97.5 x 126 cm), originally folded, now archivally mounted on linen. Evidence of some minor chipping to folds, now minimsed. Color pencil additions to the map outlining two regions. A good example of the scarce 1932 pictorial map of China by Frank Randolph Southard published by Friendship Press, the publishing arm of the National Council of Churches in New York. The map was designed as a teaching tool in classrooms and in this vein the added color on the copy offered here delineates a section of northeast China and a large swath of western China. The map is on a scale of 1:16,000,000. The outside border of the map shows various Chinese symbols such as the yinyang, the wheel of law, the pearl, long life etc. The inner border shows scenes of life in China: at home, at work, at school, in the street. The map itself is quite schematic, showing elevation pictorially, rivers, major cities. Listed in WorldCat at only three libraries, the scarcity of this map is no doubt due to its size and its practical application. A handsome map with much interesting commentary on the Western view of China in the years before World War II.

Eliot's signature appears at the bottom of the edition number page just before the title page. The spine is straight and tight, but the pages show age toning and light smudging throughout.         Miss Zilphia Gant

Dallas Book Club of Texas 1932 First Edition, only printing (never reprinted in the United States until it appeared in Uncollected Short Stories of William Faulkner, in 1979). Preface by Henry Nash Smith. 8vo: xii,29,[2]pp, no. 189 of 300 numbered copies. Original reddish-brown gilt-ruled and -lettered cloth, fore- and bottom edges untrimmed. Very light wear to spine tips, else clean, tight, bright and unmarked; about Fine (and apparently unread), wanting the original glassine dust jacket. Petersen A12.1 Fine- ¶ Probably written in 1929, three years before publication by the Book Club of Texas in this special edition of three hundred copies. The short story centers on development of the title character whose mother raises her as a virtual prisoner. "Though it is crude in its handling of sexual imagery and suffers from a number of other technical problems that betray it as an early story, it does create two vivid characters. And of more importance, it reveals the author grappling with a theme that will be developed fully in some of his greatest stories and novels: the warping, destructive impact upon the psyche of the repression of those drives that connect the human being to the world of nature. . . . The narrative techniques of 'Miss Zilphia Gant' also show Faulkner surely, if falteringly, moving toward this techniques that will make his Jefferson stories and novels masterpieces."         S.S. Manhattan arrives in New York Harbor

      - FAIRCHILD AERIAL SURVEYS, S.S. Manhattan arrives in New York Harbor, undated (1932). 15x19.5 inches or 38x50cm, gelatin silver print, framed under glass on its original mount, Fairchild credit in the negative, labeled on the mount. The background provides a beautifully clear view of the lower Manhattan skyline, with the long-gone aquarium in Battery Park at right center (the round building). The ship was launched in 1931, at the outset of the Depression, and was considered an expensive gamble on the part of its owner, United States Lines. As the label says, at the time of their construction, the Manhattan and its sister ship, the Washington, were the largest liners ever built in the U.S. According to Wikipedia, the Manhattan served trans-Atlantic routes and during World War II was a troop ship, being scrapped after the war. Condition of this print: A few areas of foxing in the sky, faint silvering to the dark areas around the hull, overall very good.

Notable authors' names are listed under many cities around the country - sparsely in the West (with the exception of San Francisco) and needing a large balloon within the inset map of Massachusetts at upper right for the names of authors located in Boston and environs. Along the upper and lower borders are portraits of authors with birth/death years. This beautiful and compelling map of America's great literary heritage was prominently featured in the Library of Congress map exhibit "The Language of the Land." No date of death is given for Henry van Dyke, who died in 1933.

        Fairy Tales

Philadelphia: David McKay Company,, 1932. Quarto. Original red cloth, spine and front board lettered and decorated in gilt, pink and white pictorial endpapers, top edge gilt. With the dust jacket, housed in the publisher's pictorial box. Colour frontispiece, vignette title page, 11 colour plates with captioned tissue guards, black and white in-text illustrations, by Rackham. Loss to head of dust jacket spine and a few tiny nicks to extremities, some tape repairs and very minor spotting to jacket verso; cardboard box a little scuffed and worn with a few tape repairs to joints; an excellent copy in the very good jacket and box. First US trade edition, first printing, published the same year as the London edition published by Harrap and identical in every point except for the inclusion of the publisher's box, which is unique to the US edition. This edition is scarce with both the dust jacket and box intact, and it has been historically "one of the most difficult of Rackham's books to buy" (Hudson p. 134). Considered to be some of his finest work, "Rackham's illustrations to Grimm, Hans Andersen or Poe show him at his most imaginative and observant of human nature" (Hamilton p. 11). When the Observer invited Hugh Walpole to choose the best picture-book of 1932, he awarded the accolade "without hesitation to Rackham's Hans Andersen ... He has risen nobly to his subject. He has acquired a new tenderness and grace. His fantasy is stronger than ever" (Hudson, p. 133-4). The stories include "The Snow Queen", "The Little Match Girl", "The Ugly Duckling", "The Tinder-Box", "The Little Mermaid", and "The Emperor's New Clothes".

A two- page letter of reference, written on black edged mourning paper, from Beatrix Potter to an unknown recipient concerning Benjamin Dawson the gardener of Beatrix's mother, Mrs Rupert Potter, at Lindeth How, Storrs, Windermere. Beatrix Potter's mother died in 1932 at the age of 93 and Beatrix supplied references for all the staff that required them. 'Castle Cottage Sawrey, Nr Ambleside March 25. 33. I have much pleasure in giving an excellent character to Benjmin Dawson. He was for 9 years in the service of my mother the late Mrs Rupert Potter at Lindeth How, Storrs, Windermere, and he has now left as the house is closed. He has been accustomed to herbaceous borders, some bedding out, green house, peach house, early vegetables, and the use of the motor lawn mower. He also understands, and has managed the central heating of the house. Mrs Potter had a high opinion of Ben's usefulness - he is a thoroughly reliable man, and strong in health. H. B. Heelis (Mrs W. Heelis.)' Some light foxing; else very good. This letter, with some differences in sentence construction, is quoted in full, together with a photograph of Benjamin Dawson in Judy Taylor's Beatrix Potter's Letters, A Selection. And partly, together with the same photograph, in Taylor's Beatrix Potter Artist, Storyteller and Countrywoman.

        THREE ON A MATCH [3 ON A MATCH] (1932)

Warner Brothers 1932 - Vintage original 11 x 14" (28 x 35 cm.) lobby card, USA. Joan Blondell, Ann Dvorak, Bette Davis, Warren William, Lyle Talbot, Humphrey Bogart, dir: Mervyn LeRoy; Warner Brothers. Fast pace and concise script and direction make this one of the most memorable of the Pre-Code films from Warner Brothers. Three schoolmate girlfriends light their cigarettes on one match, and the stories of the different directions in which their lives play out are told. This was one of Humphrey Bogart's earliest film appearances (not to mention one of his first appearances in a crime movie), and this is the only lobby card on which he appears - it is super rare. He plays a gangster who the married Ann Dvorak has taken up with when she slips into drug addiction, kidnapping her child for ransom. In this scene are Bogart and gang (L-R): Lyle Talbot, Humphrey Bogart, Allen Jenkins, Buster Phelps, Ann Dvorak and Jack LaRue. Very minor creasing to top corners and near bottom left blank white margin edge. Stunning color, virtually unused. FINE

Tight Lines Publishers 1932 - Scarce Limited Edition of this terrific book about the fishing in the Catalina Channel, California, in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Publisher: Tight Lines Publishers, 1932 Los Angeles: One of only 500 copies (this copy unnumbered and out of series). Frontispiece portrait of the author by Bachrach; illustrations from many B&W photographs and pen and ink sketches by the author. Map endpapers. [xii], 239 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Tan coarse grained cloth stamped in black, fore edge untrimmed. Chapters include: Tuna!Tuna!; Threatening Swords; Mysteries of the Deep; Just Fishing; Big Fish; Santa Cruz; The Poor Relations; Nine Hours on a Broadbill; Between Currents; Fins!; Light Tackle; and Tackle and Gear. Ralph Bandini is one of the greats among the early pioneers of big game fishing off the coast of California. Immensely respected by fellow anglers within the newly developed segment of the sport, Bandini championed conservation of California's coastal resources as a member of the state's fish and game commission, was a member of many conservation groups, and served on the board of directors for the storied Tuna Club of Santa Catalina Island. Bandini was born into a very prominent California family. His grandparents, Don Juan Bandini and Donna Maria Refugio Arguello de Bandini, had vast land holdings in the southwest. His father, Arturo, married Helen Elliot who moved to California from Indianapolis in 1874. Together they formed the "Indiana Colony", later named "Pasadena" (a word meaning "head of the valley" in the local native language). Bandini attended Pasadena public school, Throop Polytechnic Institute, and Stanford University. He earned a law degree and was associated with the firm of O'Melveny, Stevens and Milliken for five years. Afterward, he established his own practice and devoted himself to his family and to the pursuit of big game fish. Though the Bandini family was well known, Ralph did not seek the limelight and revealed little about himself over the years. His most enduring legacy to the sport of big game fishing is his writing, in particular his three books entitled Tight Lines, Veiled Horizons, and Men, Fish, and Tackle. These books, privately published and now quite rare, are among the most revealing volumes written about this formative period in the evolution of saltwater game fishing. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Second Crime Club Omnibus: Murder at the Vicarage, The Wedding Chest Mystery, Murder At The Pageant and Tragedy on the Line.

London: for The Crime Club Limited by William Collins 1932. FIRST EDITION thus. Collecting these four early Crime Club titles including the first ever Miss Marple novel. The individual books are all exceptionally scarce in dust-jacket. Thick 8vo, pp.1014. Publisher's hardback orange cloth binding, blocked in black, in the fragile original dark green pictorial dustjacket displaying the Crime Club gunman.
