Caldwell's first commercially published book (his third overall). The legendary Maxwell Perkins (Fitzgerald's editor at Scribner's) helped to edit this collection of new and previously published stories about rural life in the Deep South and in Maine, with a third section made up of a long, modernist, autobiographical prose poem called The Sacrilege of Allen Kent. The book was well-received critically (according to Flora and Bain, "Although all of his [Caldwell's] story collections contain interesting pieces, nowhere does he surpass the achievement of American Earth . . . "), and Perkins urged Caldwell to try writing a novel focusing on the rural South, which Caldwell knew best. Caldwell traveled Wrens, Georgia, and found inspiration helping his father deliver food and medical supplies to the poor tenant farmers and sharecroppers there. The result was Tobacco Road. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

The World Crisis 1911-1918, finely bound

London: Thornton Butterworth, Ltd., 1931. First abridged and revised edition. Hardcover. This is a finely bound British first edition, first printing of the first Abridged & Revised edition of The World Crisis. Originally published in six volumes between 1923 and 1931, The World Crisis is Winston Churchill's epic history of the First World War, in which he played such a critical, controversial, and varied role. Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing, weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the Front. First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915, after the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli, Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his six volume masterwork far exceeds this purpose. This important edition is not just an abridgement; it incorporates revisions by Churchill with new material, including a whole new chapter on the Battle of the Marne, as well as a new introduction. There were three printings – in 1931, 1932, and 1937. This copy marries 1931 first printing contents to a fine binding executed in dark reddish-brown half leather over marbled paper-covered boards. The binding features raised and gilt decorated spine bands, spine compartments either gilt printed or with gilt decoration, double blind rule transitions, generous leather corners, and watermarked, laid paper endpapers. Condition of the binding is better than very good plus, square and tight, the leather supple and unfaded, with sharp corners, bright spine gilt, and only minor scuffs to extremities and the paper-covered boards. The contents are quite clean for the edition. We find no previous ownership marks and no spotting and only minor soiling to the page edges. THE FORMER POSTMASTER GENERAL FRANK HITCHCOCK'S AUTOGRAPH ON AN ENVELOPE COMMEMORATING THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST AIR MAIL FLIGHT.

Mineola, NY, September 23, 1931.. 1931.. Very good. - A 3-5/8 inch high by 6-1/2 inch wide envelope illustrated with vignettes of the First Air Mail Flight which took off from Mineola in 1911 and the 1931 equivalent. "Mineola Chamber of Commerce" and the date are stamped in green at the top left and three two cent U.S. postage stamps at right are postmarked with the date and canceled. Addressed to Seymour Halpern in type, the envelope is signed in ink vertically along the left edge "Frank Hitchock / P.M.G. 1911", indicating his position as Postmaster General when that first air mail flight took off in 1911. The envelope is opened and a return address is typed on the flap on the verso. Very good.
Chairman of the Republican National Committee from 1908 to 1909, Frank Harris Hitchcock (1867-1935) was Postmaster General of the United States under President Taft from 1909 to 1913. Hitchcock is credited with establishing the first U.S. airmail service and with cracking down on mail fraud.

The recipient, Queens, New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern (1913-1997) started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law, including measures on schools, housing, civil rights, nutrition and mental health. A Liberal, he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City, and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits, including painting and collecting autographs, he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these, he was proudest of his co- sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation.
