New York: Horace Liveright, Inc., 1931. Roy. 8vo, [1]-256, [16 "Working Notes"] pp., title-page printed in black and orange. Original white vellum over bevelled boards, gilt stamped facsimile of the author's signature to the upper board, backstrip ruled in gilt, with gilt lettered black morocco label, edges uncut, deckled, with folded sheets of facsimiles of the author's handwritten sheets, tucked into pocket of rear pastedown. Signed by the author and most of the original cast from the Guild Theatre. Other than a hint of shelf-wear to the vellum, a beautiful copy. Edition de luxe limited to 550 copies, this being number 72. This copy has the signatures of the author, and 33 members of the crew and original cast from the first stage production at the Guild Theatre in 1931, collected (for O'Neill perhaps?) by the actress and legendary lesbian Nazimova with her note at the front. A contemporary review by J. Brooks Atkinson on the opening, "Using a Greek legend as his model, he has reared up a universal tragedy of tremendous stature -- deep, dark, solid, uncompromising and grim. It is heroically thought out and magnificently wrought in style and structure, and it is played by Alice Brady and Mme. Nazimova with consummate artistry and passion." Nazimova had an extraordinary career in Hollywood and is credited with inventing the phrase "sewing circle" for covert lesbian meetings.

The Eskimo Book of Knowledge … Rendered into the Labrador Dialect by the Reverend W.W. Perrett … with the Assistance of Dr. S.K. Hutton.

1931 - London, Hudson's Bay Company, 1931. 8vo. Original boards, lettered in blue, illustration mounted to upper cover, map endpapers; pp. 237; portrait frontispiece of King George V, photographic illustrations on 4 plates; spotting and darkening to binding, else a very good copy. Very rare first edition, presentation copy, inscribed on half-title to 'Admiral Sir George Egerton K.C.B. with the kind regards of George Binney 9.6.31.' With an ALS by Binney Union Club, Carlton House Terrace-headed paper. '16/6/31 Dear Sir George, Thank you so much for your appreciative note regarding my book. I'm so glad you liked it. I had a charming letter from the King's private secretary saying that it was much appreciated by the king and his Queen. Hoping that you are keeping well - yours very sincerely George Binney'. Egerton was Second Sea Lord and was appointed Second-in-Command of the Atlantic Fleet in 1906. He flew his flag on HMS Victorious, with Captain Robert Scott as his flag captain. The author led the 1924 Oxford University expedition to Northeast Land. The present work, a parallel translation in English and Labrador Eskimo dialect, was intended by the author 'to arm the Eskimo with vital knowledge, so that … he may stand a better chance to fend for himself' (p. 4). To this end, the book explains the workings of the British Empire and the Eskimos' place in it. An extraordinary work, which contains perhaps the first Eskimo translation of 'God Save the King'. 1931 paper cutting referring to the book pasted down at the end of the volume. Two volumes. 178 pp. Illustrated with 54 accordion folded plates with 160 mounted colour samples. 8vo., 190 x 105 mm, bound in original wrappers in publisher's shitzu case and cardboard folding case. Tokyo: Shunjusha, 1931. |~||~||~||~| This is Wada's first serious attempt at colour classification. Wada, who lived from 1883 to 1967 is primarily known to the general public for his early paintings, and for winning an Academy Award in 1955 for the costume design in the film Gates of Hell. However, it is really for his pioneering studies in color theory that Wada is perhaps best remembered. In 1927 he founded the Japan Standard Color Association, and its successor, the Japan Color Research Institute is still in operation today. While not as rare as his fabulous Colour Dictionary, it is still uncommon, with OCLC listing 2 copies in Japan and Copies at Yale, Princeton and University of Washington.

        Alps and Sanctuaries.

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1931. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine and front cover in gilt. Spine and board edges faded, a little foxing to contents. A very good copy. Association copy, inscribed by A. A. Milne to his son Christopher on the title page, "For Moon, with love from Blue. Christmas 1940". At the time this copy was inscribed, Christopher, having completed his first year at Cambridge before deciding to join the Royal Engineers, was awaiting his call-up papers at the Milne's home in Cotchford (his parents had left London permanently earlier in 1940). He had been due to commence training in November 1940, but had failed the medical examination due to a mistake by the medical board; this was subsequently rectified, but he had to wait until the following February to join his battalion. Christopher was at this point still extremely close to his father, "and would remain so throughout the war, though for several years separated by many hundreds of miles". Samuel Butler was an author of particular significance for Milne, who considered Butler's 1903 book The Way of All Flesh "the best novel in the English language". Alps and Sanctuaries was first published in 1881, and this is a later edition. Milne explained his son's nickname in his autobiography: "One of us thought of Robin, the other of Christopher; names wasted on him who called himself Billy Moon as soon as he could talk, and has been Moon to his family and friends ever since" (Milne, It's Too Late Now). Christopher eventually outgrew the nickname "Billy", though his father continued to call him "Moon"; Milne was nicknamed "Blue" on account of his eyes, "the bluest eyes I have ever seen" recalled Nancy Spain.

        The Weathercock - La Girouette.

      - [London], Ulysses Bookshop, 1931. Large 8vo. Original printed envelope; pp. [4], one bifolium; envelope with soiling and tear to fold of flap, internally very good; provenance: ownership inscription of Roger Senhouse, dated 1937 on envelope. First edition, number 38 of a printrun of 45, numbered and signed by the author on title, ms. number in limitation at the end. This First World War poem is printed here lithographically in cursive on opposite pages in English (one correction on the lithographic stone) and French. Blunden explains the production process of this poem on the final page. 'These verses were written by way of recreation in the Ypres salient towards the end of 1917. At that time a habit of reading French verse characterized the author and explains these stanzas! If any apology be required as well, let it be recalled that "there was a war on" - and on such relics as this have their own value to those who remember it'. All we were able to find out about Ulysses Bookshop in London is that they published the Blunden bibliography in the year of this publication, and reprinted - without authorization - early essays by James Joyce. The bookshop was run by Jacob 'Jake' Schwartz, previously a dentist in Brookly NY, and later a rare book dealer. Provenance: Roger Senhouse (1899-1970) was literary agent, publisher and translator, as well as a member of the Bloomsbury Group.

        A Solo in Tom-Toms

Covici-Friede, New York 1931 - First edition. Printed wrappers. 30pp. An about very good copy with a crease on front wrap, moderate age-toning, and a short split at the top of the front wrap. An autobiographical essay on the author's childhood, issued as a promotional piece, and a decade-and-a-half later expanded to book length and published by Viking Press. Bookplate of actor Ricardo Cortez on the inside front wrap. Inscribed by Fowler to Cortez. The glue from the bookplate has scuffed the inscription a little, the presumed text supplied by us here in brackets: "To Ric Cortez, This is a sample of what fools my parents must have [been on t]heir honeymoon. Regards, Gene Jan -- 1933." [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

AFRIKA Cape Town and South-West Africa, 1931

1931. Very Good. Stab binding, bound with grey ribbon, patterned cloth over boards (13” x 9.25”) with handwritten titles on front board; contains 19 grey heavy cardstock leaves, each featuring numerous b/w photographs (more than 150 in all, average size is 3” x 4.25”) affixed to rectos and versos with photo-corners, most of them labeled by hand, in German (with some English). Boards a little rubbed and scuffed, else fine. A lovely young African woman, wearing robes, a turban, and a necklace, clutches a pipe in her teeth and poses for the camera in front of a thatched roof house. The photograph bears the handwritten label, “Basutofrau aus dem Hinterland von East London.” So begins this collection of images – photographs taken by the author, and postcards – of Cape Town and South-West Africa in 1931. It offers a nice balance of the personal – with images of the author's friends at picnics, hiking (with men in suits and hat, and the ladies in dresses and high-heeled shoes!), on ship, and watching street performers – and the more broadly interesting streetscapes and landmarks. (The African people, it seems, were also generously willing to smile for the camera.) Postcards have labels printed in English, identifying Camps Bay, Chapman Peak, government buildings, memorials, etc., and the photographs taken by the author usually identify the place and date (tidy penmanship, in German, and often with a quip). Though a few of the author's photographs are a little blurry or over-exposed, most are nicely composed – and all of the images (photos and postcards) are bright and clean. A pleasing amalgam.
