        If It Had Happened Otherwise.

London: Longmans, Green and Co., , 1931. Lapses into Imagined History. Octavo. Original green cloth, title gilt to the spine. With the dust jacket. Slight dusty on the boards head and tail, light scatter of foxing to the fore-edge with millimetric encroachment into the fore-margin, pale differential browning to the endpapers, else a genuinely excellent copy in unclipped jacket, a touch sunned on the spine, pinhole to the lower edge of the spine panel which has three short splits at the head, supported internally with a strip of japanese tissue, with associated minor surface colour loss. First edition, first printing, variant binding as noted by Cohen, but he does not describe the jacket of either version, and the jacket on this uncommon variant is entirely different to that usually encountered. In The Command of History David Reynolds draws attention to Churchill's attraction to the counterfactual, and here he is given free reign to play with the "what ifs" of history and contributes an elegantly constructed Möbius strip of an essay titled "If Lee had not won the Battle of Gettysburg". Other contributors include Chesterton, Belloc, Philip Guedalla and H.A.L. Fisher. Reviews on the front turn-in include Rebecca West for the Daily Telegraph, "As lively a book as one could wish for", and J.L. Hammond in the Manchester-Guardian, "Imaginary history, with a light and often lightning touch". An extremely uncommon book in any condition, this a truly exceptional copy.

Köpfe des Alltags: Unbekante Menschen / Everyday Heads

Berlin: Verlag Hermann Reckendorf 1931 - First Edition. Quarto. Variant binding in limp boards, rather than spiral-bound. 80 plates, consisting exclusively of close-ups of heads, shot in an expressionistic style that belies the simplistic titling of the portraits. Seminal European photobook of the 30s; a highlight of the New Objectivity movement and a consensus highspot. Lerski was also a renowned filmmaker; he worked on Fritz Lang's Metropolis. (Roth 68-69; Parr / Badger, v1, 130-131; Open Book 98-99; Auer 172). Light spotting to the covers at the spine heel, else near fine in limp black boards in a very good example of the scarce and fragile jacket, with shallow chipping at the head of the spine, bottom of the front panel by the flap fold, and spine heel. Very minor archival restoration present at the defects. A complete and attractive copy, quite uncommon in anything resembling a serviceable jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Near-contemporary red half morocco by Bayntun, titles and decoration in gilt to spine in compartments, red cloth sides, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Colour frontispiece with tissue-guard, 22 monochrome plates, and fully illustrated margins. Binder's stamp to front free endpaper verso. Spine lightly faded, an excellent, bright copy. Literary" edition, later impression, with the marginal illustrations of a dung beetle at pp. 65, 337 & 457 corrected to show the beetle rolling his load with his back not front legs. Jock of the Bushveld was first published in 1907 in this literary edition, followed by School and Prize editions in 1908, and a Dutch edition in 1909. Reviewing the book in the TLS on first publication in 1907, John Buchan wrote; "to those who have some experience of the land and the life about which Fitzpatrick writes, Jock of the Bushveld will be a cherished possession. We know of no African book in which there is the same minute and loving observation of nature. Sir Percy sees the beauty of a landscape while the average man thinks of a waste of thorn and swamp. There is something of Jefferies in the style, something of Borrow, a touch of Mr. Kipling, and a great deal which is his own", while Mendelssohn describes it as "perhaps one of the best dog stories ever written".

        Daffodil

Vendome Press 1931 - Manchester-born novelist Jack Kahane began the Obelisk Press after his publisher, Grant Richards, went bankrupt. Going into partnership with a printer, Kahane, as Cecil Barr, published his next novel Daffodil under his Vendome imprint. Pearson identified July 1931 [3rd impression] as the earliest issue printed: "Np copy earlier than this, the so-called third impression, has been located. Kahane regarded Daffodil as the first Obelisk title: failure would have been unthinkable. He almost certainly exaggerated the number of times the book went to press in order to give the appearance of healthy sales, and stimulate demand. Lending weight to this theory is the sign-off which appears at the end of the text on [301]: Paris, May 1931. It seems unlikely that the book would have been set, proof-read and published in less than a month, and unlikelier still that it would have been reprinted twice by July. " Pearson is clearly slightly off the mark. This scarce "2nd" impression appears to have been printed in June 1931 with quite possibly no prior impression ever published. Daffodil, light bit of erotica about a model who did more, perhaps, off-camera. Was a shocker for the tourists in the early '30s. Fraying to the spine with closed tears, small creases to the covers. Pages are clean. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Aristocracy and the Meaning of Class Rule.

London: The C. W. Daniel Company,, 1931. An Essay upon Aristocracy Past and Future. Tall octavo. Original red cloth, black cloth backstrip, spine lettered in gilt, edges uncut. Numerous marginal pencil marks and comments in English in the neat and legible hand of the Kaiser. A little spotting, heaviest to title and advert leaf at rear, hinges cracked, a very good copy. Together with four black and white snapshots of the Kaiser and his wife by Lady Ottoline Morrell, taken in Holland, 1932, details to versos, each 8 x 11 cm. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy from Philip Morrell to Kaiser Wilhelm, with extensive annotations written in English by the Kaiser. Together with an autograph postcard signed from Kaiser Wilhelm, Doorn, 1931, to Philip Morrell, written in English in purple pencil across the whole of the back of the postcard beginning "According to your wish expressed in your kind letter I studied the book 'Aristocracy' which treats about everything else except Aristocracy. The author furnishes his readers with a striking example of what may become of man when he eliminates God, Saviour, Bible, Faith and Belief from his life and claps his immortal soul 'under hatches'…". Also with an autograph letter signed from Ottoline Morrell's cousin Count Goddard Bentinck, 21 September 1931, to the author Philip and sending the letter with this copy of the book "which you kindly lent the Emperor, which I hope will reach you safely. His Majesty has written many annotations in it, which I am sure will interest you …" Ottoline Morrell met the Kaiser in Holland when staying with her cousin Count Goddard Bentinck and wrote in her journal: "He enters an exceedingly impressive figure, with a remarkably handsome head, a sailor like body - shorter than I had imagined but the head much finer - very alert and obviously histrionic and vain, but too cultivated and clever to show it…". The Kaiser's annotations in the book reveal his exasperation with the author; he writes several hundred words at the end of chapter 3. When the author talks about natural rulers and what makes them such, the Kaiser's comments in the margins include: "nonsense!", "because they feel it a Heaven imposed task!", "prescribed by the Christian religion!", "based upon the responsibility to Heaven". Where Mairet hopes that "Democracy will be saved", the Kaiser wishes instead: "May it go to hell where it came from." His final comment at the foot of the last page is: "This book is unmitigated, atheistic, spiritual Bolshevism". The cultural critic Philippe Mairet (1886–1975) was hardly the raving Bolshevik of the Kaiser's complaints. In later life he described his allegiances as "Anglican and Royalist". He commented on the drafts of Eliot's Notes Towards the Definition of Culture (1948), which Eliot later dedicated to Mairet "in gratitude and admiration". But over his long career he espoused a number of extremely varied causes, including C. H. Douglas's theory of social credit. The firm of C. W. Daniel published many books that promoted vegetarian, pacifist, Tolstoyan ideals. Most of these books were published on a subsidy basis, with the author underwriting the costs of publication, or guaranteeing to buy a set number of copies.

Aristocracy and the Meaning of Class Rule. An Essay upon Aristocracy Past and Future.

London: The C. W. Daniel Company, 1931 - Tall octavo. The author furnishes his readers with a striking example of what may become of man when he eliminates God, Saviour, Bible, Faith and Belief from his life and claps his immortal soul 'under hatches' ". Also with an autograph letter signed from Ottoline Morrell's cousin Count Goddard Bentinck, 21 September 1931, to the author Philip and sending the letter with this copy of the book "which you kindly lent the Emperor, which I hope will reach you safely. His Majesty has written many annotations in it, which I am sure will interest you " Ottoline Morrell met the Kaiser in Holland when staying with her cousin Count Goddard Bentinck and wrote in her journal: "He enters an exceedingly impressive figure, with a remarkably handsome head, a sailor like body - shorter than I had imagined but the head much finer - very alert and obviously histrionic and vain, but too cultivated and clever to show it ". Autograph Letter Signed ("V"), to her nephew, Quentin Claudian Stephen Bell

Brantôme, France 1931 - 2 pp., recto and verso of single sheet of Hotel Moderne stationery. 8vo. '? Bloomsbury rampart - opera - ballet - disappointed lovers, & lovers that feed on vapour'. A letter with excellent content, written at the end of Virginia and Leonard Woolf's motor tour through southwestern France in the spring of 1931, addressed to her nephew - and later, biographer - Quentin Bell. Woolf gives news of her travels, quotes a famous maxim of Menander (as delivered to her elderly French innkeeper), mentions Quentin's brother Julian and his father, Clive Bell, waxes ambiguous on Bloomsbury, and wonders whether it might be better to live in the French countryside. In part: "It's all very well, Dearest Claudian, telling me to write instantly, but I have only my natural hand available which you can't read. Also, it thunders & lightens, & the old half-wit grandmother of the proprietor turns to me for confidence. Rassurez-vous, Madame, I say from time to time, those whom the Gods love die young. She thinks this a great joke. Yes, we are on tour ? we are enjoying life and eat pates absolutely mellow and yellow with liver. It's a disgusting taste which I expect we share with the dogs, but for once I like to feel wholly and rabidly canine ? Tomorrow we go ? home - oh dear - to Bloomsbury rampart - opera - ballet - disappointed lovers, & lovers that feed on vapour. I've had lots of confidences lately - a tribute to my grey hair, & Clive has become a misogynist, a tribute to Mary [Hutchinson]. Barbara says she will stay at Monks House this summer - I must scrape poor Julian free from his great Barnacle. Why don't we live here - far lovelier, lovelier far, than Cassis - plains, heights, poplars, vineyards, of a subtlety & distinction like a moth's wing compared with the shell of a lobster ?."1931 was a momentous year for Woolf. She finished her novel, The Waves, in February, making corrections to it in the spring and summer, before it appeared, to considerable acclaim, in October. Quentin Bell (1910-1996) was, of course, the son of Virginia's sister and fellow member of the Bloomsbury group, Vanessa Bell, who provided outstanding dust-jacket illustrations for a number of Virginia Woolf's books. Quentin Bell's two-volume biography of Woolf was published by the Hogarth Press in 1972. Soiled, old folds and tears affecting a few letters. Framed and glazed on both sides 2 pp., recto and verso of single sheet of Hotel Moderne stationery. 8vo [Attributes: Hard Cover]
