Stiff Wraps. Very Good Plus. No title, n.p., n.d. Circa 1930s. (We base the dating on the presence of a hobo -- otherwise, it could easily be from the prior decade.) Narrow 4to. 24 by 12.5 cm, with pull piece of elongating slacks extending length to 43 cm. Unpaginated, 12 pp. Caricatures of a black emcee, a saxophone player, a chinaman, a chef, a captain, a hobo and a wise old man. Notwithstanding the radically different appearance of each of them, they are all wearing the same pants, which can be made absurdly long by pulling a tab in the back -- the same tab works for all the figures. Translating the first four lines of verse, which introduce the work, "Six fellas you find here, all short, pull at their feet, to make them taller." The verse rhymes, and is more graceful, in the original German, needless to say. There is no bibliographic information whatsoever in the booklet, and so we can only speculate as to its origins. We suspect that this might have been produced as a "party favor" for a nightclub or nightclubs and cabarets, both because of the subject matter and the ease by which it can stand upright on a table. Slight bumping to the lower edge of the tab. Otherwise, fine, and incredibly bright.

Bull, Johan (1893-1945)
1930. Hardcover. Very Good. Mock-up manuscript for an unpublished children's book manuscript. N.d., circa 1930. Oblong, 25 by 38 cm. 15 pages of illustrated text following the manuscript cover. In addition, there are three matted illustrations of the semi-abstract animal motives found on the front cover. It is unknown with any certainty why this immensely charming, and very professional, manuscript was never published. It is our conjecture that the manuscript was submitted early in the Depression when publishers were cutting back on the children's book list, and especially color illustrated books, both because of the economic straits they were suffering like virtually every industry in the American economy, and more specifically, perhaps, changes in the marketplace for children's books, with some shift of buying from families to public libraries, with a subsequent drop in overall sales as a result. Nonetheless, this manuscript was intended by Bull to be published, as on the back cover there is a label indicated that the manuscript had been submitted by Fred A. Wish, Inc., presumably Bull's literary agent. The book is a small collection of nonsense verses about animals around a house -- cats, dogs, mice, chickens, ducks. Each of the poems runs one to two pages, and is accompanied by one to five illustrations, with the text and illustrations pasted onto the heavy card stock leaves. Condition: card leaves are detached from spine band. A few minor edge chips to cards.

Auden, W. H.
London: Faber & Faber, 1930. Soft Cover. First Edition. Very Good. First edition, one of 1,000 copies printed. Publisher's pale blue paper wrappers, quadruple-ruled in red, lettered in black, text block edges untrimmed, some pages uncut. A very good copy with a touch of wear and toning to extremities, front hinge cracked but holding, otherwise very bright and clean. First printed privately in 1928, it was not until 1930 that Auden's first book of poetry was printed for trade, when T.S. Eliot, then director of Faber & Faber, accepted it for publication with the addition of several new poems. This edition includes numbered poems as well as Auden's play, Paid on Both Sides. Notably, Auden's work had a prominent impact on other British and Irish writers at the time, including Christopher Isherwood and Cecil Day-Lewis, to whom the book is dedicated. This group of writers became known as the Auden generation, and shared left-wing political views. [Attributes: First Edition]

(WOMEN'S RIGHTS; NIGERIA.)
Lagos: printed by the Government Printer,, 1930. Foolscap quarto (328 x 205 mm). Wire-stitched in the original printed green-blue light card wrappers. 5 maps and plans, 3 of them folding, one of these being a large general regional map (c.440 x 540 mm); 7 folding annexures containing detailed parallel timelines for Owerri and Calabar Provinces. Wraps damped on the front panel, some carry-through to the first couple of leaves, chipping and splitting at the edges, staples corroded with some associated staining, a few leaves coming loose, text-block lightly browned and with occasional mild hygroscopic damping to the margins, remains very good. Substantial, highly detailed official account of the Aba Women's War; the primary source for what is one of the most significant and closely-studied events of the colonial period in Nigeria. Somewhat fragile and consequently an uncommon survival, around a dozen locations worldwide on OCLC, no copies recorded at auction. Variously referred to in the official record as the Aba Women's Riots or the Women's Market Rebellion, this campaign is probably more fairly called "The Women's War", the term used by participants themselves in both the Igbo and Ibibio language accounts of the conflict. Official recourse to the language of riot and disturbance is suggestive of a desire to diminish the significance of events, the apparently chaotic nature of which defied the authorities' understanding of organised opposition. The actions were sparked by the implementation of policies of colonial "indirect rule" by "warrant chiefs" subordinate to regio … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Laicens, Linards; Laicens, Olga
Latvju Kultura, Rig?, 1930. Cover designed by Ernests Kalis. Illustrated with photographic artworks. First edition. Published in only 1300 copies. In publisher's illustrated wrappers. 47, (1) p. First issue of the third and last year of "Kreis? fronte", the first substantial leftist Latvian-language journal with international aspirations. Its concept and format followed Vladimir Mayakovsky's magazine the "LEF" and the design of "Novy Lef". Only 17 issues were published between 1928 and 1930 (the last one was double), when it was banned by the authorities, and Laicens launched his new magazine the "Trib?ne". The content of "Kreis? fronte" was more cultural than political, contained avant-garde literary elements as well as photographic artwork. Linards (Petrovich) Laicens (1883-1938) was a Latvian Expressionist writer and poet, active in politics as a member of Communist party. He was the editor or the leftist Avant-garde journals "Kreis? Fronte" and "Trib?ne". [Bibl.: Fraser, James H.: Publishing and Book Design in Latvia 1919-1940: A Re-discovery. Riga, Neputns. pp. 126-128.] OCLC locates fragmentary holdings of this journal in two libraries, NYPL, and Waseda, but it is unclear if either owns this issue. Blue inkblots on title page. Spine artistically restored. Slightly trimmed. Overall in fine condition. In publisher's illustrated wrappers First edition. Published in only 1300 copies. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

PANKHURST, Sylvia E., & I. O. Stefanovici, trans.) EMINESCU, Mihail.
London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co., Ltd, 1930. London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co., Ltd,, 1930. Translated from the Rumanian and rendered into the original metres. With a preface by George Bernard Shaw (reproduced in facsimile). With an introduction by N. Iorga. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine in gilt, top edge yellow. Front board slightly bowed, rubbing to spine ends and tips, foxing to endpapers, edges of single gathering browned; a very good copy indeed. First edition in English, presentation copy from Sylvia Pankhurst, one of the translators, "Presented to Alberto Tamb[?] by Sylvia Pankhurst, 1940". The recipient has added their ownership inscription in pencil on the same page, "Property of Alberto Tamb[?]", and additionally annotated the work in pencil on a number of pages. This was the first collection of Eminescu's poems published in English. "Pankhurst discovered in Eminescu a kindred spirit in dislike of contemporary decadence and social injustice, and she sent her translations to her friend George Bernard Shaw", who provided the preface for this edition (France, p. 215). In 1934 Pankhurst and her partner, Italian anarchist Silvio Corio, travelled to Romania to be present at the unveiling of a statue of Eminescu in Constanza, on the Black Sea. Pankhurst was active in the Italian anti-fascist movement, partially through her connection to Corio, and started the Society of Friends of Italian Freedom and the Women's International Matteotti Committee (1932), which agitated for the release of Italian Socialist Giacomo Matteotti's widow.

HAZARD, Robert
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1930. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First edition. Octavo. Red cloth with printed paper labels on spine and upper board. Light stain on paper label on upper board, cloth on the lower board slightly warped near the foredge, very good or better in attractive very good dustwrapper with slight chipping at the spine ends. Lively firsthand account of "hacking," or taxicab driving, in New York during the 1920s. Hazard navigates his Packard through the city, touring Central Park and Greenwich Village, Hell's Kitchen and Broadway, telling tales of the many fares he encounters, including, in the words of a contemporary reviewer, "gunmen who have not quite enough nerve to come to grips with their enemies, racketeers who at one time controlled the taxi business, stingy old ladies and eccentric old men-an infinite variety of persons" (*Scribner's Magazine*). The vivid Art Deco-style illustrated dust jacket is uncredited. A delightful piece of New York social history; scarce, especially in dust jacket.

ca 1930-35. Condition: Old crease and kraft paper adhesions to extremities (well away from image); Near Fine. A chilling image of a pistol-wielding African-American man fleeing the scene of a crime, leaving two white bodies lying in the street. Original drypoint etching. Sheet size 27.5cm x 41cm (ca 10-3/4" x 16"); image area 15.5cm x 30cm. No edition stated (artist's proof?). Signed in pencil, lower right. Old crease and kraft paper adhesions to extremities (well away from image); Near Fine. A chilling image of a pistol-wielding African-American man fleeing the scene of a crime, leaving two white bodies lying in the street. It is unclear whether the scene is intended as a commentary on growing racial tensions in Harlem in the 1930s (possibly a direct reference to the Harlem Race Riot of 1934?), but the work is typical of Groth's social-realist work of the Depression era. Though best remembered as a wartime sketch-artist and book illustrator (he produced a number of titles for The Limited Editions Club, including the widely-praised LEC edition of Erich Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front ), Groth began his career as a printmaker and cartoonist very much in the social-realist mold, publishing some of his earliest work in such left-wing forums as The New Masses and PM. He was also the first Art Director at Esquire, which was founded in 1933. Groth's mastery as a printmaker is on display in these early works, which manage to convey a simultaneous sense of urgency and delicacy which would become the hallmark of his battlefield sketches made during WW2 and the Korean … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

ca 1930-35. Condition: Nice condition: See description. Original aquatint. Sheet size 49.5cm x 67.5cm (ca 19-3/4" x 26-1/2"); image area 45cm x 61cm. Signed and numbered (1/50) in pencil, lower right, titled lower left. Slight soil to verso and to margins; a strong, clear and clean impression. A spectacular large print demonstrating Groth's early mastery of aquatint technique -- a Bowery street scene peopled with the ghost-like figures of Depression-era down-and-outers, typical of Groth's social-realist work during the Great Depression. Groth's mastery as a printmaker is on display in these early works, which manage to convey a simultaneous sense of urgency and delicacy which would become the hallmark of his battlefield sketches made during WW2 and the Korean War. Groth's Depression-era work has remained scarce in the marketplace, with only a few examples of his social-realist prints at auction in the past twenty years. The current example is from Groth's personal archive, which we acquired in 2013.

Robert E. Howard - Conan - Complete Set of Conan Gnome Press Books. Complete 7 volumes. 8vo. 1st editions of all 7 Conan books published by the Gnome Press. INSCRIBED by Le Sprague de Camp to the f.f.e.p. of 'Tales of Conan'. Conan The Barbarian King Conan The Coming of Conan Conan the Conqueror The Sword of Conan Tales of Conan The Return of Conan All volumes are a minimum of very good condition (most are better) with some very minor bumping along the edges of cloth of some volumes. All original dust jackets - most are very fine - all fully protected in mylar wraps. Small chip to the top of spine edge of Conan the Barbarian (and also some minor soiling to the same DJ (as would be expected for books of this age). THE SET: Now immortalized in comics, films, video games, and television series, Conan the Barbarian first became a hulking figure of sword and sorcery when Robert E. Howard's stories appeared in the pulp magazine Weird Tales in the 1930s. Following Howard's 1936 suicide, however, he might easily have sunk into obscurity with so much of the rest of the genre. Fortunately, Gnome Press revived and preserved the heroic icon. Under the guidance of sci-fi author L. Sprague de Camp, the stories were edited, revised, and collected in this seven-volume set. Published 1950-1957, this is a complete set of first editions, inscribed by DeCamp in the Tales of Conan volume. All in all, an amazing complete set of Gnome Press Conan Editions that will be very hard to duplicate or find again.

濱田増治 (Hamada, Masuji); 仲田定之助 (Sadanosuke Nakata) (text by)
東京 (Tokyo): 東京朝日新聞社 (Tokyo Asahi Shinbunsha), 1930. First edition. Softcover. g+ to vg-. Quarto. 134pp. [1]. 37pp. Photo-illustrated wrappers with red lettering on the front cover and spine. The book contains a selection of 168 works from the International Advertising Photography Contest held by the Tokyo Asahi Shinbunsha newspaper, in 1930, the first of its kind in Japan. The book is profusely illustrated throughout with finely printed sepia-toned photographic reproductions of the images from the competition. Many of the images display modernist qualities, and some with more avant-garde sensibilities, utilizing such techniques as photomontage, multiple exposure and more abstract framing. These images advertise a wide-range of contemporary products from toiletries and other household items to cosmetics, food, drink, records, and clothing, laid out in single, double, triple and quadruple image spreads. Each image is accompanied at least a one line captioned description. The first image in the book displays the first prize winning work of Iwata Nakayama* (中山 岩太), who would go on to be known as one of pioneer of modernist avant-garde photography in Japan. His work shows a traditional white Japanese sock (tabi), outlined in black, against a white background with the image of a fukusuke (traditional Japanese good luck charm) imprinted on the sock. The first 14 pages contain what were determined to be among the best works from the competition, with larger images on glossy paper. Joyce, James
Paris: Shakespeare & Co., 1930. 11th Printing, May 1930. In original blue wrappers, lightly chipped along margins, age toning to contents pages which is common in these editions, but generally a nice bright copy. Gridded moleskin note card inscribed by Joyce attached to front wrapper. "James Joyce/Hotel Belgravia/Grosvenor Gardens/London." Undated but inscribed in April 1931 upon his arrival in London from Paris, just prior to moving in May to a flat in Kensington and marrying Nora in July (Ellmann p. 637): Joyce felt free now to go to England for the next six months. Nora was uneasy, knowing that he throve neither on the English climate nor his London acquaintanceship, but on April 11, 1931 they gave up their flat on Square Robiac (Paris) and a few days later began what Joyce called their 'fifth Hegira.' In London they stayed for a little over a month in the Hotel Belgravia in Grosvenor Gardens. S.W.1. Then moved at the beginning of May to a flat at 28b Campden Grove, Kensington, where they planned to stay indefinitely. Joyce now completed his arrangements to establish permanent domicile in England, and also consulted with Monro Saw & Co., to legalise his marriage. Housed in custom made solander box.
