THE WORKS OF GEORGE BERNARD SHAW: 33 volumes, EACH Volume Inscribed to Shaw's Favorite Actress Lillah McCarthy

Constable & Company Limited [1930-1938], London - Laurence A198a. The Best Edition of Shaw's Works, copy #740 of 1025 copies complete in 33 volumes in the original dustwrappers collecting his writings from his first novel-- IMMATURITY--to his famous plays--PYGMALION, MAJOR BARBARA, etc.--through and beyond his winning of the Nobel Prize in 1925. EACH of the 33 volumes is INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author to actress Lillah McCarthy. The first volume, as are most of the others, is INSCRIBED "This one is Lillah's/G. Bernard Shaw." Volume 10, MAN AND SUPERMAN, is INSCRIBED: "This volume is very specially/dedicated to the/Creatrix/of/Ann Whitefield, who will/always be my/Ann Whitefield/Lillah McCarthy/G. Bernard Shaw 12th Dec. 1931." McCarthy became the leading lady in 1905 at The Court Theatre, managed by Granville Barker, her future husband, and financed by Shaw. Her first role was as Nora in Shaw's JOHN BULL'S OTHER ISLAND. She then caused a sensation as Ann Whitefield in his masterpiece MAN AND SUPERMAN, earning Shaw's respect for her talents so much so that he tailored the part of Jennifer in THE DOCTOR'S DILEMMA especially for her. When McCarthy married Barker, who played the male lead opposite her in several of Shaw's plays, Shaw was upset as he felt they were not a good pair. Though the couple successfully produced a number of other Shaw plays in the following years, Shaw was proven correct when Barker left her for another woman. McCarthy later married Sir Frederick Keeble, and the final volume of this set is INSCRIBED by Shaw "to Lady Keeble (Lillah)." Near Fine in Very Good dustwrappers.         Passover Haggadah. A New Critical Edition with English Translation, Introduction, and Notes Literary, Historical, And Archaeological, By Cecil Roth. With Drawings by Albert Rutherston

Printed at the Curwen Press for the Soncino Press, London, England 1930 - 209, [1], (2 blank), XL pages = 252 pages, including 16 full-page illustrations. Yaari 2149. Not in Yudlov. One of a limited numbered edition of 100 copies printed on J. Barcham Green¿s hand-made paper, numbered 11 to 110. An additional 10 copies, numbered I to X, were printed on vellum (one sold at auction for $49,200). Original blue morocco gilt by Henry T. Wood in slipcase. Internally the book looks new. The still very sturdy slipcase has done a wonderful job protecting the book but is a bit soiled and its 88 years are showing. Hebrew text and English translation face a face. Designed and illustrated throughout by the British artist Albert Rutherston. Illustrations and numerous head and tailpieces, all stenciled in colors under the supervision of Harold Curwen at the Curwen Press. Hebrew fonts by Enschede en Zonen of Holland. English text and layout designed by Oliver Simon (chairman of the Soncino Press). The English text is set in Baskerville, upper cover with gilt-stamped illustration, spine titled in gilt in Hebrew and English, all edges gilt. Rutherson, whose works are in the Tate Gallery, London, is the younger brother of British impressionist painter Willliam Rothenstein. Ruthenstein studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and his friends came to include Augustus John, William Orpen, Charles Conder, Walter Sickert and Wyndham Lewis. Rutherson began his teaching career at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, and went on to become Ruskin Master of Drawing at Oxford (1929-49). In 1936 he was one of the founder members of the Pottery Group, along with Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant, Paul Nash, Ben Nicholson and Graham Sutherland. . ¿In issuing this new edition of the Haggadah, the publishers have aimed at giving to this time-honored liturgy a setting of consummate beauty, a fitting testimony to the almost filial affection in which it is held by the Jewish people¿ (Publisher's note, by J. Davidson). Around the outbreak of the First World War, Albert changed his name to Rutherston, due to British anti-German sentiment. He served in the British army in Eretz Israel between 1916 and 1919. In 1916 Eretz Israel was still a province in the Ottoman Empire, in 1917 the area was conquered by the British and its allies, who dismembered Turkey, ¿The Old Man of Europe,¿ and then, for 20 years became it became ¿Mandatory Palestine,¿ a euphemism for a quasi ¿colony¿ owned by an imperial power. Rutherston then wrote the book "Decoration in the Art of the Theatre" published in 1919 and edited the Contemporary British Artists series between 1923 and 1927. In 1927 Rutherston illustrated the Thomas Hardy book Yuletide in A Younger World, and designed posters and tickets for the London Underground. He held the post of Ruskin Master of Drawing in Oxford from 1929 to 1948. He also designed stage sets for Harley Granville-Barker's productions. He became closely associated with some of the greatest names of 20th-century English arts scene, including members of the Bloomsbury Group. This Haggada is a new critical edition with English Translation, Introduction, and Notes, Literary, Historical, and Archeological, by Cecil Roth (1899-1970), an Oxford-educated Jewish historian and educator as well as a prolific writer of more than 600 works. In addition to his histories of the Jews in England and Italy, and his masterworks, A History of the Marranos, The Jews in the Renaissance, and Jewish Art, he was the Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopedia Judaica from 1965 until his death.         [PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM CONTAINING OVER ONE HUNDRED FIFTY IMAGES OF MILITARY LIFE FOR THE U.S. MARINES IN GUAM PRIOR TO WORLD WAR II]

[Guam; China, 1930. 158 silver gelatin photographs, most approximately 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches, some larger, approximately 3 1/2 x 5 3/4 inches. Oblong octavo. Black cloth boards, tied with cord, front cover gilt stamped. Light edge wear. About three fourths of photos captioned on black card stock supports, photos in corner mounts. Images clean and crisp. Very good. An engaging and cohesive photograph album with almost one hundred sixty images documenting the life of an American Marine on Guam in 1930. The island became a territory of the United States after the Spanish-American War in 1898, and was of great strategic import to both Japan and the United States during World War II. As a result, the island suffered heavy damage during the American campaign to retake it in 1943 and 1944, and as a result these images comprise a highly useful record of Guam and America's military presence there prior to the war. The album consists of numerous scenes on the island, including images of Piti, Apra Harbor, several beaches, various beach structures, town architecture and infrastructure, animal life, and jungle settings. Several of images of native islanders and portraits of Marines and other Americans are present as well. The majority of photographs depict life for the U.S. Marines, and detail their activities, such as military exercises, parades, artillery practice, and camping expeditions. They also show the Marine facilities, such as the barracks and other military structures, as well as a number of military vehicles, naval transports, and Marine aircraft. A small final portion of the album documents a contemporary trip to China. A fine visual record of U.S. Marine and island life during the interwar years on Guam, "Where America starts its day."

[Photo album]: Young Woman's College Album from 1924 to 1930 in Ypsilanti, Michigan Featuring a Photograph of Mary Pickford

Ypsilanti, Michigan / Virginia / California, 1930. Very Good. Oblong octavo measuring 8" x 6". 59pp. String-tied black leather over stiff paper boards. Contains 218 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 2.5" x 1.5" and 4.5" x 2.75" with captions, with additional ephemera from 1924 to 1930. Tears and chips with some pages detached but present thus very good with near fine photographs with tiny tears and creases. The photo album contains a plethora of photographs featuring Esther Davis and her adventures. Most pictures are of the three Davis daughters; Alice, Rachel, and Esther either posed or candid shots with their friends taken at Michigan State Normal College in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Esther Davis is seen dancing and smiling with all her glee club members, standing outside wearing fancy clothing or costumes, and graduating high school and college. Esther Davis lived in the Bessie Leach Priddy House, a sorority, at Michigan State Normal College. While most of the pictures are from Michigan, some are labeled from places in Virginia and California. Two of which feature photos of Mary Pickford on the set of Little Annie Rooney which was being filmed in West Hollywood, California. Pickford was 33 at the time of filming but played a spry and determined young Irish girl. The movie became one of the highest grossing films of 1925. Pickford is seen smiling with the cast in one photo and then posing in the other. Both photos are fine with "Mary Pickford in 'Annie Roonie," written on the bottom edge. An interesting collection of photographs from a young woman during 1924 to 1930 documenting her adventures with friends and family, completing her education, and her encounter with Mary Pickford.

PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF 94 ORIGINAL, SEPIATONE IMAGES TAKEN BY TRAVELLERS TO THE BRITISH COLONY OF RHODESIA [NOW ZIMBABWE] WITH A SOJOURN TO SOUTH AFRICA IN THE 1930s

1930. Original album. Original Cloth. Very Good. In an album made by Newlyn of London, comprising blue cloth over heavy boards and leaves of gray boards with photo-windows, are 94 photographs measuring 3.25" x 4" that feature the Zulu tradition, Victoria Falls, etc. Album, 9.5" x 6" with "Photographs" and a gilt emblem on the cover. In the self-governing colony of Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), the point of this voyage was two-fold: to interact with some of Africa's Bantu people, and to observe the rush of Victoria Falls as first sighted by David Livingstone in 1855. Following a pleasant sea voyage with all of the comforts and entertainments expected of a British cruise company, this party of travelers visited the grave of Cecil Rhodes, which lies among the rock formations of the Matopos, and also the Shangani Patrol Memorial erected to commemorate Major Wilson's Last Stand during the first Matabele War in 1893. Zulu people are seen near the front of the album in a small town, and later the men are photographed on the banks of the Zambezi River in a long canoe, while the women fill clay water jugs to carry on their heads for many miles. Victoria Falls, with its immense gorges and raging waters, appear in no fewer than a dozen photographs. Lake Victoria is photographed, along with Victorial Falls Bridge, built in 1905. Our travelers attend and photograph a sport-related celebration where the British flag is prominent, and where African men perform a traditional dance with a large group of musicians playing hand-crafted, three-foot-wide wooden xylophones. A flavorful photo album.

[Archive of Original Designs for Kuhnle's Cremation Urns]

1930s (?). Very good. A collection of 17 designs of Cremation Urns, of which 12 are original watercolor designs and 5 are chromolithographs (?) touched in crayon, each interleaved with archival tissue. Image size ca. 235 x 170 mm, matte size 365 x 280 mm (all mattes are wavy). With size measurements for each specimen written in the margins by a careful but shaky hand. Preserved in a fine protective case of silver gray cloth. A small but rather mysterious archive of elegant watercolor designs for Cremation Urns. Whereas the name of the designer (or manufacturer?) is clearly discerned, we have been unable to identify this individual (or company) with any certainty. Furthermore, we have been unable to discover if any of "Kuhnle's Cremation Urs" were ever produced. In the blank margins of each design are measurements in inches for the particular specimen, as well as a number -- perhaps a product or production number. The aesthetics of the 12 watercolors are quite appealing, and there is added interest in the manner by which the remaining 5 designs were rendered in a sort of chromolithographic process, involving -- it seems -- the application of crayon by hand. Highly curious.

The Maltese Falcon [1930 First Edition in First State Dust Jacket]

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1930 - Original light gray cloth with falcon device and bordering on front cover in black, spine panel decorated in dark blue and black, deckled text block edges with top edge stained dark blue. [viii],268 pp. Nicely preserved copy showing light tanning/mottling to cover cloth, with a few marks along edges, top text block edge mildly faded. Firm binding. Minor soil spot to lower front flyleaf, diagonal corner crease to rear endsheet original to issue, overall VG+, likely Near Fine in many estimates. Very scarce unrestored first-issue dust jacket shows $2.00 price for both previous Hammett novels on rear panel and publisher's summary (not blurbs) on front panel; the jacket has a price-clipped front flap, minor chipping at heel of spine, 3/4" long x 1/4" deep chip at head of spine, minor loss to top corners with 1 3/4" closed tear along upper front flap fold, 1 1/4" closed tear at head of front joint, short tear with minor loss at head of rear joint and short closed tear along top rear edge, with typical age toning to rear panel and flap edges, front panel slightly soiled but retaining bright color, technically Good+ to perhaps VG- but with relatively minor faults, great candidate for professional restoration, displays well in new mylar.

        Autograph Letter Signed

June 10, 1930, 1930 Handwritten letter signed by Thornton Wilder on Alpha Delta Phi Club stationary commenting on his disapproval of the sale of an authors manuscripts to a bookseller: "June 10, 1930/ My dear Mr. Greene: In my opinion manuscripts are not a thing that should be sold during an author's lifetime. And Galsworthy' gesture may prove - with the lapse of time-to have been ill-judged. Indeed I had hoped to see your bookshop, but the routine of campus duties made inroads into many of my good intentions and into almost all that centered downtown. Sincerely yours, Thornton Wilder"..         Diritto delle Pandette. Traduzione dei professori Carlo Fadda e Paolo Emilio Bensa con note e riferimenti al diritto civile italiano.Torino, Utet, 1930.

Torino, Utet 1930 - Cinque volumi di cm. 22,5, pp. 4.000 ca. complessive. Legatura editoriale in piena tela rigida. Sporadiche annotazioni a matita. Esemplare ottimamente conservato. Cfr. Iccu. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Pursuit [Hauran, Autumn 1918]

London: Faber & Faber, 1930. 31 pp. 1 vols. Square 8vo. Plain card wrappers in orange printed dust jacket (minor chipping at edges). Inscribed by the author on inside front wrapper. 31 pp. 1 vols. Square 8vo. 'They charged behind El-Orans when at set of sun ...'. Narrative verse account of war in the desert 'He who had dined with princes ate the poor Beduin fare, The darling of a palace slept in the tents of hair; Swiftly he learnt the desert from Maan to Marb Dam, And ever at his bridle arm like a shadow rode Sottam. 'Full many a mellay knew them, o'er many a trench they strode, When Sidi Feisal's army poured up the pilgrim road. They charged behind El-Orans when at the set of sun He and old Auda's handful saw your best battalion run.' Philip Graves, elder brother of the poet Robert Graves, knew the East well, and was the Times correspondent in Constantinople until the outbreak of the war when he was expelled. He reached Cairo in 1915 "with the reputation of being the leading British expert on the Turkish army, his writing skills were put to use on the constant updating of The Turkish Army Handbook, on which he was assisted by T. E. Lawrence. In the following year he joined the Arab Bureau, and at the end of 1917 was a member of Gilbert Clayton's 'political camp' at General Allenby's advanced general headquarters" (ODNB). After the war, he served again as Times correspondent in Constantinople where in 1921 he debunked the "Protocols of the elders of Zion" and demonstrated it to be a fraud based upon a nineteenth-century pamphlet attack upon Napoleon III. His stirring poem, The Pursuit, bears a printed dedication To My Old Friends of the Arab Bureau" and at page 28 the quatrains above mention the exploits of Lawrence of Arabia. This copy is inscribed "To T.E. Shaw with best wishes from Philip Graves". "Books at Clouds Hill", in: T.E. Lawrence by His Friends, p. 489 (this copy noted). Not in O'Brien. OCLC: 4108127

My Early Life: A Roving Commission [together with] Thoughts and Adventures.

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited,, 1930 & 1932. 2 volumes, octavo. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in dark blue morocco, spines with single-line gilt panel to compartments (gilt rampant lion device gilt to four of the six), single-line panel on sides, facsimile of Churchill's signature in gilt on front covers, two-line gilt turn-ins, burgundy endpapers, gilt edges. Housed in a custom-made leather-entry slipcase. Plates from photographs, illustrations in the text. General light toning to letterpress. Very good copies. First editions, first impressions. Presentation copies from Churchill to Robert Boothby: My Early Life with a pre-publication inscription on the preliminary blank: "Robert Boothby from Winston S. Churchill Oct. 14. 1930" (we have had another inscribed presentation copy similarly dated, six days before publication); this copy in Cohen's second state (with the cancel half-title). Thoughts and Adventures: "Robert Boothby from Winston S. Churchill Nov. 1932". Robert Boothby (1900-1986) was chosen by Churchill to be his parliamentary private secretary in 1926, holding the post until the government fell at the 1929 general election. "Over the years his relations with Churchill, though intermittently close, were scarred by differences of opinion, for instance on India and the abdication of Edward VIII, and above all by Boothby's natural incapacity to be a disciple or courtier" (ODNB). In a letter to Martin Gilbert, Boothby noted that he received in 1935 a wedding gift from the Churchills ("a magnificent silver ink-stand and pot") and commented "I was then still his blue-eyed boy" (Winston S. Churchill, Companion Volume V, p. 1123). Gilbert also cites Boothby's glowing letter to Churchill when the latter's The World Crisis was serialized in The Times in February 1926: "It rivets attention upon the battlefields of France and those who died there, for all time" (Winston S. Churchill, Volume V, p. 229). In October of 1930 Churchill was very much preoccupied with the question of India and tariffs and Gilbert records that on the morning of the 14th (the date of his inscription) he personally delivered a letter to Baldwin, at the time leader of the Conservative opposition (and a friend of Boothby's father), concerning his (Churchill's) objection to tariffs; he also joined the Indian Empire Society and discussed the political situation with Lord Reading. During November 1932 (the timing of the Thoughts and Adventures inscription) Churchill was at the forefront of parliamentary debates concerning German rearmament. My Early Life is Churchill's first volume of sustained biography, a highly entertaining account of his childhood, schooldays at Harrow, military training at Sandhurst, experiences as a war correspondent in Cuba, and service attached to the Malakand field force on the northwest frontier of India, charging with the 21st lancers at Omdurman, and as a POW in South Africa during the Boer War. Thoughts and Adventures covers his early political career, the battle of Sidney Street, service on the Western Front (with a near-silence on Gallipoli), the negotiation of the Irish settlement, thoughts on the "Mass effects of modern life" and life "Fifty years hence". A handsomely bound pair with an excellent provenance.

The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism.

London: George Allen & Unwin,, 1930. Translated by Talcott Parsons. With a foreword by R. H. Tawney. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, with the dust jacket. Ownership inscription "Stewart" to front free endpaper in ballpoint. Very slight rubbing to spine ends and corners, dust jacket spine darkened, with some chipping to spine ends; a clean, bright copy in a very good jacket, rarely seen. First edition of the first English translation of Weber's great work, which originally appeared in German across two issues of the Archiv für Sozialwissenschaften und Sozialpolitik (November 1904 and June 1905). He managed to substantially revise the text for its first publication in book form shortly before his death in 1920; it appeared under the title Die protestantische Ethik und der Geist des Kapitalismus and was intended as the first volume in a series collecting Weber's writings on the sociology of religion, though his death meant the project was never completed. "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism is Max Weber's most famous as well as most controversial book. In it he traced the influence of religious ideas upon the conduct of men and challenged the Marxist thesis that man's consciousness is determined by his social class … Instead of completing his investigation of Protestantism, Weber began a comparative analysis of urban communities and of political organization as well as a study of the relation between religion and society. These wide ranging studies had the common purpose of defining and explaining the distinguishing characteristic of Western civilization. The Protestant Ethic was destined to serve as an introduction to this major theme of Weber's lifework, a specification of the interrelation of religious ideas and economic behaviour as the focus for further research. Weber's particular thesis – that Puritan ideas had influenced the development of capitalism – became the subject of a voluminous literature" (Bendix, Max Weber, an intellectual portrait, p. 71f).
