[Archive of Original Designs for Kuhnle's Cremation Urns]

1930s (?). Very good. A collection of 17 designs of Cremation Urns, of which 12 are original watercolor designs and 5 are chromolithographs (?) touched in crayon, each interleaved with archival tissue. Image size ca. 235 x 170 mm, matte size 365 x 280 mm (all mattes are wavy). With size measurements for each specimen written in the margins by a careful but shaky hand. Preserved in a fine protective case of silver gray cloth. A small but rather mysterious archive of elegant watercolor designs for Cremation Urns. Whereas the name of the designer (or manufacturer?) is clearly discerned, we have been unable to identify this individual (or company) with any certainty. Furthermore, we have been unable to discover if any of "Kuhnle's Cremation Urs" were ever produced. In the blank margins of each design are measurements in inches for the particular specimen, as well as a number -- perhaps a product or production number. The aesthetics of the 12 watercolors are quite appealing, and there is added interest in the manner by which the remaining 5 designs were rendered in a sort of chromolithographic process, involving -- it seems -- the application of crayon by hand. Highly curious.

The Maltese Falcon [1930 First Edition in First State Dust Jacket]

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1930. Book. VG+. Original Cloth. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Original light gray cloth with falcon device and bordering on front cover in black, spine panel decorated in dark blue and black, deckled text block edges with top edge stained dark blue. Minor soil spot to lower front flyleaf, diagonal corner crease to rear endsheet original to issue, overall VG+, likely Near Fine in many estimates. Very scarce unrestored first-issue dust jacket shows $2.00 price for both previous Hammett novels on rear panel and publisher's summary (not blurbs) on front panel; the jacket has a price-clipped front flap, minor chipping at heel of spine, 3/4" long x 1/4" deep chip at head of spine, minor loss to top corners with 1 3/4" closed tear along upper front flap fold, 1 1/4" closed tear at head of front joint, short tear with minor loss at head of rear joint and short closed tear along top rear edge, with typical age toning to rear panel and flap edges, front panel slightly soiled but retaining bright color, technically Good+ to perhaps VG- but with relatively minor faults, great candidate for professional restoration, displays well in new mylar..

Original-Entwürfe für ein Bootshaus (1930). In einer eigens angefertigten Mappe mit kalligraphisch gestaltetem Titel in rot und schwarz: 'Entwurf eines Bootshauses für wh. Herrn Ing. Heinz Schirmer in Nürnberg / Bayern. Entwurf: M 1:50. 1:25. Ausgeführt von Jorg Jarosch Dipl. Arch. Wien i.

        The Pursuit [Hauran, Autumn 1918]

London: Faber & Faber, 1930. 31 pp. 1 vols. Square 8vo. Plain card wrappers in orange printed dust jacket (minor chipping at edges). Inscribed by the author on inside front wrapper. 31 pp. 1 vols. Square 8vo. 'They charged behind El-Orans when at set of sun ...'. Narrative verse account of war in the desert 'He who had dined with princes ate the poor Beduin fare, The darling of a palace slept in the tents of hair; Swiftly he learnt the desert from Maan to Marb Dam, And ever at his bridle arm like a shadow rode Sottam. 'Full many a mellay knew them, o'er many a trench they strode, When Sidi Feisal's army poured up the pilgrim road. They charged behind El-Orans when at the set of sun He and old Auda's handful saw your best battalion run.' Philip Graves, elder brother of the poet Robert Graves, knew the East well, and was the Times correspondent in Constantinople until the outbreak of the war when he was expelled. He reached Cairo in 1915 "with the reputation of being the leading British expert on the Turkish army, his writing skills were put to use on the constant updating of The Turkish Army Handbook, on which he was assisted by T. E. Lawrence. In the following year he joined the Arab Bureau, and at the end of 1917 was a member of Gilbert Clayton's 'political camp' at General Allenby's advanced general headquarters" (ODNB). After the war, he served again as Times correspondent in Constantinople where in 1921 he debunked the "Protocols of the elders of Zion" and demonstrated it to be a fraud based upon a nineteenth-century pamphlet attack upon Napoleon III. His stirring poem, The Pursuit, bears a printed dedication To My Old Friends of the Arab Bureau" and at page 28 the quatrains above mention the exploits of Lawrence of Arabia. This copy is inscribed "To T.E. Shaw with best wishes from Philip Graves". "Books at Clouds Hill", in: T.E. Lawrence by His Friends, p. 489 (this copy noted). Not in O'Brien. OCLC: 4108127

My Early Life: A Roving Commission [together with] Thoughts and Adventures.

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited,, 1930 & 1932. 2 volumes, octavo. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in dark blue morocco, spines with single-line gilt panel to compartments (gilt rampant lion device gilt to four of the six), single-line panel on sides, facsimile of Churchill's signature in gilt on front covers, two-line gilt turn-ins, burgundy endpapers, gilt edges. Housed in a custom-made leather-entry slipcase. Plates from photographs, illustrations in the text. General light toning to letterpress. Very good copies. First editions, first impressions. Presentation copies from Churchill to Robert Boothby: My Early Life with a pre-publication inscription on the preliminary blank: "Robert Boothby from Winston S. Churchill Oct. 14. 1930" (we have had another inscribed presentation copy similarly dated, six days before publication); this copy in Cohen's second state (with the cancel half-title). Thoughts and Adventures: "Robert Boothby from Winston S. Churchill Nov. 1932". Robert Boothby (1900-1986) was chosen by Churchill to be his parliamentary private secretary in 1926, holding the post until the government fell at the 1929 general election. "Over the years his relations with Churchill, though intermittently close, were scarred by differences of opinion, for instance on India and the abdication of Edward VIII, and above all by Boothby's natural incapacity to be a disciple or courtier" (ODNB). In a letter to Martin Gilbert, Boothby noted that he received in 1935 a wedding gift from the Churchills ("a magnificent silver ink-stand and pot") and commented "I was then still his blue-eyed boy" (Winston S. Churchill, Companion Volume V, p. 1123). Gilbert also cites Boothby's glowing letter to Churchill when the latter's The World Crisis was serialized in The Times in February 1926: "It rivets attention upon the battlefields of France and those who died there, for all time" (Winston S. Churchill, Volume V, p. 229). In October of 1930 Churchill was very much preoccupied with the question of India and tariffs and Gilbert records that on the morning of the 14th (the date of his inscription) he personally delivered a letter to Baldwin, at the time leader of the Conservative opposition (and a friend of Boothby's father), concerning his (Churchill's) objection to tariffs; he also joined the Indian Empire Society and discussed the political situation with Lord Reading. During November 1932 (the timing of the Thoughts and Adventures inscription) Churchill was at the forefront of parliamentary debates concerning German rearmament. My Early Life is Churchill's first volume of sustained biography, a highly entertaining account of his childhood, schooldays at Harrow, military training at Sandhurst, experiences as a war correspondent in Cuba, and service attached to the Malakand field force on the northwest frontier of India, charging with the 21st lancers at Omdurman, and as a POW in South Africa during the Boer War. Thoughts and Adventures covers his early political career, the battle of Sidney Street, service on the Western Front (with a near-silence on Gallipoli), the negotiation of the Irish settlement, thoughts on the "Mass effects of modern life" and life "Fifty years hence". A handsomely bound pair with an excellent provenance.

The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism.

London: George Allen & Unwin,, 1930. Translated by Talcott Parsons. With a foreword by R. H. Tawney. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, with the dust jacket. Ownership inscription "Stewart" to front free endpaper in ballpoint. Very slight rubbing to spine ends and corners, dust jacket spine darkened, with some chipping to spine ends; a clean, bright copy in a very good jacket, rarely seen. First edition of the first English translation of Weber's great work, which originally appeared in German across two issues of the Archiv für Sozialwissenschaften und Sozialpolitik (November 1904 and June 1905). He managed to substantially revise the text for its first publication in book form shortly before his death in 1920; it appeared under the title Die protestantische Ethik und der Geist des Kapitalismus and was intended as the first volume in a series collecting Weber's writings on the sociology of religion, though his death meant the project was never completed. "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism is Max Weber's most famous as well as most controversial book. In it he traced the influence of religious ideas upon the conduct of men and challenged the Marxist thesis that man's consciousness is determined by his social class … Instead of completing his investigation of Protestantism, Weber began a comparative analysis of urban communities and of political organization as well as a study of the relation between religion and society. These wide ranging studies had the common purpose of defining and explaining the distinguishing characteristic of Western civilization. The Protestant Ethic was destined to serve as an introduction to this major theme of Weber's lifework, a specification of the interrelation of religious ideas and economic behaviour as the focus for further research. Weber's particular thesis – that Puritan ideas had influenced the development of capitalism – became the subject of a voluminous literature" (Bendix, Max Weber, an intellectual portrait, p. 71f).

        Her Privates We

London: Peter Davies,, 1930. Octavo. Original ecru rough cloth, title lettered in black to the spine, and to the front board together with striking pictorial decoration of death and the soldier. With the glassine dust jacket with glued printed flaps. Endpapers mildly toned, a light scatter of foxing to the fore-edge barely encroaching on the margin, the jacket slightly shrunken as usual, short split to the tail edge of the front panel, no loss, an unusually well-preserved copy. First trade edition, first impression. Fictionalised account of Manning's experiences on the Western Front, particularly in the Battle of the Somme. Published the previous year in a limited edition of 525 copies as The Middle Parts of Fortune - the title taken from the line in Shakespeare's Hamlet immediately preceding "her privates we" - this lightly expurgated version met with great popular success buoyed by enthusiastic critical responses, such as that of T.E. Lawrence; "It's magnificent, a book in a thousand … No praise could be too sheer for this book … How admirable are its restraint, and humour, and vividness … there are too many sides to the book for it ever to be forgotten"; Hemingway claimed to read the book "every year to remember how things really were so that I will never lie to myself or anyone else about them"; while for E.M. Forster it was simply "the best of our war novels". This a superb copy in the extremely fragile, and therefore very rarely encountered, "experimental" glassine dust jacket.

        Portrait of a young woman

[Adelaide : probably between 1930 and 1935]. Watercolour and gouache on paper, sheet 280 x 190 mm, signed lower right 'Rex Wood'; laid down on original board mount, removed from a frame at some point; in very good condition. Rex Wood was born in Laura, in the Mid North of South Australia in 1906, and studied painting at the South Australian School of Art in Adelaide. Although his first solo exhibition was held in Adelaide in 1935, his works - in various mediums - had been included in numerous Adelaide exhibitions from around 1930. He left for England in 1937, shortly after his second solo exhibition, and continued his studies in London before eventually settling in Portugal, where he remained domiciled until his death by drowning in 1970. The beautiful young woman depicted in this fine head-and-shoulders portrait is unidentified. Stylistically the work is strongly influenced by the Art Deco aesthetic, recalling in particular the female subjects of Tamara de Lempicka. The age of the mount and backing sheet confirms an early 1930s dating. The work is therefore a relatively early one in terms of Wood's oeuvre, painted in Adelaide prior to his initial departure from Australia. Although Wood is acknowledged as a highly accomplished Australian artist of some importance, relatively few of his works - either paintings or prints - are held in Australian public collections. He is represented in the collections of the Art Gallery of South Australia; the State Library of South Australia; the National Gallery of Australia; the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and the Hamilton Art Gallery. Provenance: Private collection, Melbourne.

Dutch New Guinea Anthropological Photographic Album of Private 1930s Expedition

1930 - Thirty seven images of an unidentified 1930s expedition in northeast Dutch New Guinea from Humboldt Bay (today Jayapura) to Fak Fak, including Lake Sentani (just inland from Jayapura). The album is an anthropological record focussing on the local people, with the Kaya Kaya identified. The images include males of all ages as well as warriors, females, family groups, and their stilt dwellings and canoes. This expedition took place during the period in which the Dutch were intensifying their exploration of western New Guinea, to keep out the British and Germans and to discover exploitable natural resources. There is an American connection with the album - the only identified person is one Charles Gary, an American from Louisville, Kentucky, who was in New Guinea presumably to investigate the possibility of growing tobacco there. The Gary Tobacco Company was apparently formed in 1915 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Liggett and Myers. This leads us to speculate that Gary had an association with Richard Archbold, the wealthy American sponsor of seven expeditions to New Guinea, the first three of which he lead himself. The location of the the third expedition is congruent with photographs in this album. At the same time, the Australian Leahy brothers were active in New Guinea. The first photograph in the album intriguing- it is of three men, two in western suits (one carrying a large camera,) and one in clothes strikingly like the Australian army uniforms in W.W.I, with breeches and puttees. This man resembles Michael Leahy. This album likely records images taken during one of the private expeditions of the time. Its route is not known, but places named here include Hollandia in Humboldt Bay and Fakfak, which were both Netherlands Indies government administrative posts, established in 1894 and 1910, and used as staging sites for the Dutch government expeditions. In 1926, the American-Dutch collaboration called the Stirling Expedition, sponsored by the Smithsonian, traveled along the Mamberamo River to the highlands of Dutch New Guinea. The sepia tone photogravure images include:1. Image of a large native hut on stilts in the water2. "Papuan Warrior of Hollandia", with feathers of white cockatoo in his hair, cassowary feathers around his neck and ankles, boar's tusk in his nose. On the verso is written, in pen and pencil, "Please ret. photo to Mr. Charles Gary, 2611 Top Hill Rd."3. Sepia tone shot of 3 women carrying babies, their village behind them.4. Men of the village in front of a western building with illegible sign.5. Men beside an outrigger canoe. The carbon prints images include:6. Kaya Kaya warriors, 3 men with bows and arrows. Smaller and crisper image with title beneath in ink.7. Kaya Kaya warriors. Dark, crisp image of 3 men in war plumage.8/9. Images of women posing for photograph, village in background.10/11. "Kaya Kaya types - Dutch New Guinea". One image of man with plumage; the second image of a family with child between them.12/13. Two men posing with younger man; and two men posing with child. The gelatin silver snap shots include:14/15. "Hollandia - Humboldt Bay" written in pencil. An image of 2 women, and an image of 4 men. 16/17 "Sentani Lake, Dutch New Guinea" written in pencil. An image of houses on stilts, with natives, and an image of villagers on a walkway.18/19. Man with decoration in white on his face, and image of a standing man.19/20. 3 men on a dock, village on stilts behind them, and image of young man with bow and arrow, with possible mission buildings behind him.21/22. 3 men on a dock, in front of a hut, and an image of 7 women and girls of varying ages.23/24. Man with a spear in front of raised western hut, and an image of 3 women with babies.25/26. 3 native prisoners with 2 uniformed native guards, and an image of 9 natives entitled "Charlie's Carryers (sic) N. G."27/28. River view with small boat, and an image of a native with spear standing at his fishing trap.29/30. "Geelvink Bay, N. Coast D. N. G [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Photograph Album from a member of the 31st Regiment documenting his service protecting the International Settlement during the Shanghai War of 1932 between China and Japan

Shanghai and various Philippine locations, 1930. Album. Very good. The album measures 11.5" x 7.5" and contains over 260 photographs, most 3.5" x 2.5" or 4.5" or 2.75". The photographs are a mix of vernacular and more professional photos, some perhaps taken by a unit photographer. About 100 were taken during the Sino-Japanese conflict following the "January 28 Incident" in early 132, and the others were taken in the Philippines at Manila, Vigan, Bagulo, and Corregidor. Most have fading white captions on the album pages and more detailed descriptions on the reverse. There is also a 9.5" x 9.5" map of Shanghai with annotations identifying the war zone and regimental positions. The photos are in nice shape but have become attached to their mounting corners. Some of the mounting corners are detaching from the pages which makes it possible to read the descriptions on their reverse. The album and pages show some minor wear. On 4 February 1932, the U.S. 31st Infantry departed from the Philippines on board the USS Chaumont and landed in Shanghai the following day to bolster the defenses of the city's International Settlement as Japanese and Chinese forces began to fight on the outskirts of the city. The 31st quickly assumed defensive positions with the 4th Marines along Soochow Creek directly across from the Chapei district that became the focal point of Sino-Japanese fighting. The battle lasted through early March and intermittent fighting continued until a ceasefire agreement was finalized in May. The 31st returned to its garrison in the Philippines later that summer. (See Cornebise, The United States Army in China, 1900-1938.) Image highlights include: Regimental soldiers and locations (New World Building, Studio de Arts, motorcycle in front of 1st Battalion Headquarters, etc.), British military units marching through the streets and at the city's Race Track, Soldiers laying communications wire through the streets, Regimental officers posing with a "Chink" policeman (the unit's distinctive polar bear insignia is visible on several campaign hats), Block houses along the settlements protective walls, The location of "Charlie Chan" (a Chinese machine gunner who thwarted a number of Japanese advances), Japanese soldiers, and equiptment (infantry, marines, tanks, artillery, etc.), Chinese soldiers (many dead), Destruction and ruins throughout Chapei including the Northern Railroad station, and Coastal artillery and anti-aircraft batteries at Corregidor (three, six, and twelve inch guns and Ft. Drum, the "concrete battleship.)". A unique and important visual record of U.S. neutrality in the face of Japanese aggression in the years preceding World War II. As of 2017, no auction results for 1932 Shangai albums are found at ABPC or the Rare Book Hub although book of half-tone prints occasionally appears as dos Ah Fong's superb photograph book document the later Siege of Shanghai in 1937. No similar items are for sale in the trade. OCLC locates a similar album kept by a British soldier, but none from Americans.

        THE DOCUMENTS IN THE CASE.

Ernest Benn Limited, [1930]., London - First edition. An exceptionally fine, bright, tight copy in a fine example of this usually fragile dust jacket, Housed in a quarter cloth and marbled paper clamshell case with titles stamped in gold gilt on the spine. A man dies due to fungi poisoning, or so it seems, because due to some irregularities in some of the dead man's correspondence, the case was re-opened. The second examination of the body was confusing because if the man had been murdered the method of poisoning was one of the most ingenious in the history of murder. At the same time the method the investigators decide upon to determine whether the death was accidental or the result of foul play is equally ingenious. A Haycraft/Queen Cornerstone mystery title and an exceptional copy of an elusive title.By far the best copy we've ever seen or handled. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
