The Castle. A Novel. Translated by Willa and Edwin Muir.

London: Martin Secker, 1930 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to upper board and spine gilt, top edge dyed yellow. With the dust jacket. Spine faded, edges of boards a little dulled, spotting to edges of text block and title leaves. An excellent copy in the jacket that is a little rubbed, creased, and dulled along the edges, with a few small chips and toned spine panel. First English edition, first impression. The Castle will never attain the fame of its sister The Trial, but in literary terms it is more than a match. This was the first publication in English of any of Kafka's books, preceding English editions of The Trial and Metamorphosis by some seven years. It is far scarcer than either.       1930..

Dark Romanticism: From Goya to Max Ernst: Von Goya bis Max Ernst [Englisch] [Hardcover] Hrsg. Felix Krämer (Autor) Roland Borgards, Ingo Borges, Claudia Dillmann, Dorothee Gerkens, Johannes Grave, Mareike Hennig, Hubertus Kohle, Felix Krämer, Franziska Lentzsch, Alexander Meier-Dörzenbach, Manuela B. Mena Marqués, Nerina Santorius, Claudia Wagner

Hatje Cantz, 2012. Auflage: 1 (23. Oktober 2012). Hardcover. Good. 28 x 23,6 x 2,6 cm. From its very inception in the late eighteenth century, Romanticism's celebration of euphoria and sublimity has been dogged by its equally intense fascination with melancholia, insanity, crime, the grotesque and the irrational. In 1930, the famous literary theorist Mario Praz named this strain in literature "Dark Romanticism," but its equivalent in art has never been thoroughly assessed in art history. This volume is the first to examine a current that runs from Goya's war etchings through Symbolism and up to Surrealism, presenting Romanticism as an intellectual position that was embraced throughout Europe and that endured into the twentieth century. J. B. Lippincott Company, 1930., 1930. First edition. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Why had Sir Jervis wanted him to promise never to move the ancient megalithic Stones, and why no one even know how many of them there were?" "Then one night the wall in the queer old library moved and Anthony found himself on the trail of a mystery that exceeded his wildest imaginings." A beautiful copy of this early title.

Warsaw: Dziewulski, 1930. First edition. A fine copy of his doctoral dissertation - a seminal work in mathematical logic (Van Heijenoort: From Frege to Gödel). “Herbrand gave early signs of his mathematical gifts, entering the École Normale Supérieure at the exceptional age of seventeen and ranking first in the entering class. He completed his doctoral dissertation in April 1929. That October he began a year of service in the French army. He then went to Germany on a Rockefeller fellowship, studying in Berlin (until May 1931) with John von Neumann, then in Hamburg (May-June) with Emil Artin, and in Göttingen (June-July) with Emmy Noether. He left Göttingen for a vacation in the Alps and a few days later was killed in a fall at the age of twenty-three. ... Herbrand’s main contribution to logic was what is now called the Herbrand theorem, published in his doctoral dissertation: it is the most fundamental result in quantification theory. Consider an arbitrary formula F of quantification theory, then delete all its quantifiers and replace the variables thus made free with constants selected according to a definite procedure. A lexical instance of F is thus obtained. Let Fi be the ith lexical instance of F: the instances being generated in some definite order. The Herbrand theorem states the F is provable in anyone of the (equivalent) systems of quantification theory if and only if for some number K the disjunction & & F1 V F2 V ... V Fk& & (now called the kth Herbrand disjunction) is sententially valid ... The Herbrand theorem establishes an unexpected bridge between quantification theory and sentential logic. Testing a formula for sentential validity is a purely mechanical operation. Given a formula F of quantification theory, one tests the kth Herbrand disjunction of F successively for k=1, k=2, and so on: if F is provable, one eventually reaches a number k for which the kth Herbrand disjunction is valid. If F is not provable, there is, of course, no such k,. and one never learns that there is no such k (in accordance with the fact that there is no decision procedure for quantification theory). Besides yielding a very convenient proof procedure, the Herbrand theorem has many applications (a field explored by Herbrand himself) to decision and reduction problems and to proofs of consistency. Almost all methods for proving theorems by machine rest upon the Herbrand theorem” (D.S.B. Vol. 6, p.297).& & See also Hook & Norman: Origins of Cyberspace, no. 865 for the important application by John A. Robinson of Herbrand’s theorem. Van Heijenoort: From Frege to Gödel, pp. 525-581.& 8vo: 239 x 169 mm. Original printed wrappers, two small pinholes in upper cover; an excellent copy. (2), 128, (2) pp. Custom cloth folding case with gilt spine lettering. Scarce.

        Voluptes De Paris

Paris-Publications, Paris - This is a near fine copy of the rarest of Brassai's books, which has been bound into a hardcover binding from the period, in handsome red and black marbled paper-covered boards, and a linen cloth spine with red leather label, gilt title. The original binding of this book was a spiral plastic ring type. The spiral binding was taken off and the book with its original red-orange covers with the title printed in large white letters, was bound in whole. Covers are bright and clean, in very good condition, (small closed tear to bottom corner of back cover), inside completely clean. There is no date on the colophon page (inside back cover) and there apparently were two editions. The first edition was published in 1930, but Brassai was reportedly unhappy with the selection of images and because he was not credited. In our copy he is credited as the photographer and so we assume this is the second edition from ca.1934. It is unpaginated. There are 40 pages, with 38 black and white photographs of ladies of the night, strippers, models, night clubs and balls like the Bal Tabarin, shots of tough streetwalkers in Les Halles, many shots of men and women in costume, sometimes drag, also a lesbian couple in a club "strictement Feminine", shots of lovers in parks, on streets, playful shots of men looking into a lingerie shop window with elaborately garbed mannequins at night, 1 shot of Kiki in a Montparnasse night club, an amazing shot in " La Cage a Femmes d'un Grand Music-Hall Parisien" which shows a cage or pit, viewed from above with women on stools, like lions, in various states of undress and performing "acrobatic" feats. Finally tipped in at the very end on the collophon page a half-page size shot in color of a nude woman in profile, we assume not by Brassai. Large 4to, 11" high X 8" wide. The original book was not cut down when re-bound, it is in its' intended size, and because of the re-binding, it has been kept in near fine condition. A beautiful copy of a true rarity.
