        GENERALS DIE IN BED

William Morrow, New York 1930 - Tan cloth lettered in red, black on white illustrated page edges, black top page edges. pp [14], 269, [5]. Yellowing and slight foxing to page edges, else fine. The striking yellow, black & red non-pictorial Art Deco jacket (by Wenck) has tiny chips to head of very lightly darkened spine; small narrow rubbed spot to rear spine fold; tiny chips to lower edge of front panel and outer corners; yellow rear panel has a 1 cm tear at bottom, minor dust soiling; else fine. First published earlier in 1930 by a small British publisher; Morrow having previously rejected the manuscript, ended up reprinting it a few times. This powerful tale is the most important Canadian World War I novel and no doubt one of the top ten WWI novels. Harrison was born in Philadelphia and by age sixteen was working for The Montreal Star. He enlisted with the Royal Montreal Regiment and was a machine-gunner in Belgium and France, wounded at Amiens in 1918, after which he returned to Montreal for a while before moving on to New York. The novel was praised by Ford Madox Ford, and in its partial appearance in magazines, including German ones, may have influenced Remarque in the writing of ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT. "The story of the looting of Arras by Canadian troops and their conflict with the English Military Police is told for the first time. But piquant as are these and many other revelations of the realities of war in and behind the lines, the real quality of the work lies in the exquisite, and withal unselfconsciousness, expression of the beauty and graciousness of human relationships, however startling and unorthodox, amid the foulness and brutality of that inferno." - jacket flap. See the two columns about Harrison in Toye, Oxford Companion to CanLit. Now quite scarce on the market in any sort of dust jacket. This is a lovely copy, by far the best I have ever seen, very scarce indeed in this condition. Size: Octavo. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A Theory of Electrons and Protons. SS. 360-365. In: Proceedings of the Royal Society. Series A, Vol. 126.

London, Harrison, 1930. - (25 x 17,5 cm). A small group of autograph musical manuscripts in the hand of the noted film composer

1930s or later. 1. Fair copy of tenor saxophone chorus part of three standards arranged (not composed) by Raksin. Folio (319 x 241 mm.). 3 pp. of a bifolium. Notated in ink on 12-stave music paper "Parchment Brand No. 3" issued by Belwin Inc, New York. P. 1: "Nobody's Sweetheart now," dated "September 1931"; p. 2: "Some of These Days," dated "Sept. 1931"; p. 3: "Dinah," dated "August, 1931" at conclusion. With inscription to head of p. 1: "To the best Tenor Sax Man I know. Tony from Dave Raksin," signed again and dated Sept. 27, 1931 at foot. Somewhat browned and soiled, especially at spine. Slightly frayed at edges; minor paper repair. 2. 1st alto saxophone part for "Sapphire." Octavo (242 x 172 mm.). 2ff. written on one side only. Notated in pencil on 10-stave music paper "Clarke's Music Tablet" issued by Theodore Presser Co., Philadelphia. Incomplete; part breaks off at the end of p. 2 after 85 measures. No signature or date. Stapled at upper left corner; creased and frayed at edges. 3. Tenor saxophone part (in B-flat) of an arrangement of Frédéric Chopin's Prelude op. 28 no. 4 in E minor. Folio (319 x 241 mm.). Notated in ink on one side of the leaf only on 12-stave music paper. The part is written out twice, with minimal differences: in the second version, some enharmonic spellings have been corrected, but a "p[iano]" and "smorz." in the final measures are lacking. The first version is quite clear, but the heading, "Prelude ?- Chopin E. Minor" is written in haste and the instrument not specified. The second version, headed "Tenor Sax Prelude ?- E Minor Chopin," bears all signs of a fair copy. No signature or date. Minor repair to left edge. 4. 1 page, in all likelihood for tenor saxophone. Folio (ca. 320 x 240 mm). Notated in ink on 12-stave music paper paginated "6" at upper left corner. First staff: conclusion of an unknown piece in 4/4 time with a key signature of four sharps. Second staff: blank, with headed "Train from the West." Staves 3-12: [?]entire part for "Train from the West" (double bar at the end). Various verbal cues to other parts in both pencil and ink; notational corrections in pencil, partially erased; rehearsal numbers 32- 35 in red pencil framed in blue. No signature or date. Most probably used for conducting; frequent changes of tempo suggest that the fragment belongs to a film score. Slightly worn and creased; laid down to styrofoam with dark gray mat. . "Nobody's Sweetheart Now," a 1923 song by a team of authors including Elmer Schoebel (1896-1970), is a pop standard. The other two songs are considered jazz standards: "Some of These Days" was written by Shelton Brooks (1886-1975) and popularized by Sophie Tucker's 1911 recording; "Dinah," by Harry Akst (1894-1963) was first introduced in 1923 and remained highly popular throughout the 1920s and 1930s. "Train from the West" is most likely from a film score; the style of manuscript and the quality of paper of "Sapphire" suggest that this fragment belongs to an unknown arrangement from Raksin's very early years. "Mr. Raksin began piano lessons at 6 but later switched to the saxophone. At 12, he was leading a small dance band, which he expanded in high school for broadcasting on the local CBS station. He taught himself orchestration in high school and while majoring in music composition at the University of Pennsylvania played in society bands and radio orchestras." The Los Angeles Times, August 9, 2004, obituary for Raksin by Dennis McLellan. "In 1935 Raksin went to Hollywood to work with Charlie Chaplin on the music for Modern Times. This collaboration yielded one of the most effective original scores ever written for a silent film... Raksin settled permanently in Los Angeles in 1937, working in the Hollywood studios as a composer, arranger and/or orchestrator and studying privately with Schoenberg. Raksin's unusually complex textures and harmonies typecast him as a specialist in horror films and mystery, but he was adept in other genres, including westerns and comedies. In the early 1940s Raksin was employed at Fox, for whom he wrote the score to Laura (1944). One of his most original and enduring works, the film's reputation as a classic owes much to the haunting score; at its heart is Raksin's elusive melody for the title character which, remarkably, is never completed. The theme was a great popular success as a song (lyrics by Johnny Mercer), became a jazz standard and is one of the most performed and recorded of all film themes... Raksin worked regularly as a film composer until the early 1970s; his body of about 100 scores includes perhaps some 20 works that rank among Hollywood's very best..."

Collection of Twenty Seven Original Watercolour and Pencil Drawn Designs of Stained Glass Windows and Interiors of Catholic Churches in Great Britain Produced by "John Hardman & Co."; With Four Original Photos of Stained Glass Windows and Two Pieces of Related Printed Ephemera].

1930 - Ca. 1930-1950s. 27 watercolours on paper, mostly mounted on card (five unmounted, one mounted on linen and card), including eleven large pieces from ca. 62x35 cm (24 ½ x 13 ¾ in) and ca. 53x62 cm (20 ¾ x 24 ¼ in) to ca. 48x30,5 cm (18 ¾ x 12 in) and 30x65,5 cm (12 x 25 ¾ in); and sixteen smaller pieces from ca. 33x41,5 cm (13 x 16 ½ in) to ca. 16x10,5 cm (6 ¼ x 4 in). Ten watercolours with paper seals of John Hardman & Co. attached to the right lower corners on verso (two more with the remnants of the seals). Most with period pen or ink explanatory notes, titles, inscriptions "John Hardman Studios" et al. On recto or verso; four signed by the designers (Patrick A. Feeny, Donald B. Taunton, Arthur E. Buss, W.G. Edwards). Several mounts with wear including chipping or minor losses on corners and extremities, one mounted watercolour with several deep creases, one with a hole on the mount not affecting the image, several watercolours slightly soiled, but overall a very good collection. Beautiful collection of original watercolour designs for stained glass windows created by the "John Hardman & Co." - famous manufacturers of stained glass windows, ecclesiastical fittings and ornaments for Catholic churches in Great Britain, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada et al. The company was founded in 1838 and began manufacturing stained glass in 1844; quickly it became the leader in the industry, widely known for numerous works in the Gothic Revival style made in collaboration with the architect Augustus Pugin (1812-1852). The most famous building which "John Hardman & Co." made glass work for was the Houses of Parliament in London. Our collection relates to the period of the company's work in the 20th century, under the leadership of Donald B. Taunton (1886-1965) and Patrick A. Feeny (1910-1995). Taunton served with the company as its chief designer from 1935 to 1964. His works can be seen in Great Britain, the U.S., Canada, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. Feeny was a "stained glass designer and a Fellow of the British Society of Master Glass Painters, and an early experimenter with what is known as 'dalles de verre' or 'slab glass'. He joined Hardman and Co. In 1928, and took the firm over in 1964" (Stained Glass in Wales online). The collection contains eleven large designs, including a five-window composition of Christ's Resurrection with Christ's figure in the centre and three smaller pieces around (Christ and Mary Magdalene, the Myrrhbearers and the Angel, Christ and two disciples on the road to Emmaus); a five-window composition of Christ's Transfiguration with the voice of God the Father coming from the sky, Moses and Elijah at Christ's sides, apostles Peter, James and John at his feet, and eight angels surrounding the composition; a seven-window composition with Christ on the cross surrounded by the Virgin Mary, apostles and saints; a four-window composition dedicated to the Virgin Mary with the Annunciation as a central piece and eight smaller scenes from her life around; large prolonged composition with Christ on the cross, and St. John the Baptist, surrounded by saints and scenes from the Gospel; and others. Very interesting is a four-window composition with English Catholic saints and English cathedrals, featuring St. John Fisher in front of the Rochester Cathedral, St. Augustine in front of the Canterbury Cathedral; St. Columba in front of the Iona Cathedral, and St. Thomas Moore in front of the Tower of London. There are also two large designs of the churches' interior decorations: of St. Austin's Catholic Church in Stafford (by Patrick A. Feeny), and of St. Mary's Convent in Handsworth. Overall a beautiful collection of original watercolour designs from the archive of one of the world's best stained glass manufacturers. For a more detailed description please contact us.

A small group of autograph musical manuscripts in the hand of the noted film composer

1930s or later 1930 - "Nobody's Sweetheart Now," a 1923 song by a team of authors including Elmer Schoebel (1896-1970), is a pop standard. "Train from the West" is most likely from a film score; the style of manuscript and the quality of paper of "Sapphire" suggest that this fragment belongs to an unknown arrangement from Raksin's very early years."Mr. This collaboration yielded one of the most effective original scores ever written for a silent film. The theme was a great popular success as a song (lyrics by Johnny Mercer), became a jazz standard and is one of the most performed and recorded of all film themes. Raksin worked regularly as a film composer until the early 1970s; his body of about 100 scores includes perhaps some 20 works that rank among Hollywood's very best." Martin Marks in Grove onlineRare autograph examples dating from the early years of one of America's great film composers. Slightly frayed at edges; minor paper repair.2. 1st alto saxophone part for "Sapphire." Octavo (242 x 172 mm.). 2ff. written on one side only. Notated in pencil on 10-stave music paper "Clarke's Music Tablet" issued by Theodore Presser Co., Philadelphia. Incomplete; part breaks off at the end of p. 2 after 85 measures. No signature or date. Stapled at upper left corner; creased and frayed at edges.3. The first version is quite clear, but the heading, "Prelude – Chopin E. Minor" is written in haste and the instrument not specified. The second version, headed "Tenor Sax Prelude – E Minor Chopin," bears all signs of a fair copy. No signature or date. Minor repair to lef [Attributes: Signed Copy]

The manuscript on which the edition is based is lost. The first edition, from 1929, lacks the reference to Edition Benno Balan in the imprint and carries a typeset copyright notice dated 1929. It is also a facsimile, but is based on a different, partially autograph, manuscript. Max Blonda is a pseudonym of Schoenberg's (second) wife, Gertrud, nee Kolisch (1898-1967). Von heute auf morgen is Schoenberg's first opera and also the first dodecaphonic opera by any composer. "For Schönberg it was the twelve-tone system that held the key to the future, and in 'Von heute auf morgen' he was seeking to prove that that key was not incompatible with popular success. The 1930 performances at the Frankfurt Opera and over the radio disappointed the composer. His hopes for popular success were not realized. Within two months of the premiere Schönberg was to pen the rather defensive essay 'My Public,' an essay in which he argues that 'expert judges'-principally conductors, performers, and others with influence in the musical world-are to blame for the lack of understanding of his music."
