Herbert Jenkins, UK 1930 - Imbibe [Magazine], ran a feature in 2010: The May/June 2010 issue features the 25 Most Influential Cocktails of the Past Century. Narrowing down that list got us thinking about the people behind some of those cocktails, so we thought it only fitting to curate a list of the 25 most influential cocktail personalities of the last 100 years. For this list, we considered the type of influence someone has had on the cocktail world as well as the duration of that influence¿and keep in mind that these are people who have specifically influenced cocktail culture, not spirits. Whether they¿ve created an iconic cocktail, spawned a cocktail trend or dedicated themselves to educating the public about the craft of cocktails, the following 25 people have undoubtedly impacted the way we all drink cocktails today, and for that, we toast each of them. - Robert Vermeire was on that list: As a London barman in the 1920s, Robert Vermeire compiled a recipe book that has stood the test of time. Cocktails: How To Mix Them, published in 1922, includes the original recipe for the Sidecar, among other drinks that offer a snapshot of the times. What makes the book even more notable is how it catalogs the inventors of the drinks, preserving this historical information for posterity. - Although this book is undated, it does state that it is the Ninth Large Edition. Coupled with the price of the book, [2/6 net], I am estimating the book was published in the 1920's [after 1922], to the 1930's. - CONDITION & DESCRIPTION OF BOOK: The original dustjacket houses the book. Price of 2/6 net to the spine. Chipping to the corners and top and bottom of the spine with a few closed edge tears as well as creasing to the extremities. Lightly soiled with a few faint fox spots. Housed in a removable archival sleeve. Blue cloth boards. Uneven fading, mainly to the spine. Boards are nice and clean and tightly bound to the inner page block. The pages although clean are very foxed throughout. 112 pages plus 4 sides of further advertising. Pages are all tightly bound. - E N D - Our orders are shipped within 1 or 2 business days. - Thanks for your interest and I hope you like the book enough to buy it. - Regards from Arabella.       October . 1930. - Archive of 11 large rough proof photographs of the R101 airship disaster, the photographs measure 12'' x 10'' [6] and 10'' x 8'' [5]. A total of 46 of the 54 passengers and crew were killed immediately. Rigger's S. Church and W. G. Radcliffe survived the crash but later died in hospital in Beauvais, bringing the total of dead to 48. The bodies were returned to England and on Friday 10 October a memorial service took place at St Paul's Cathedral while the bodies lay in state in Westminster Hall at the Palace of Westminster. Nearly 90,000 people queued to pay their respects: at one time the queue was half a mile long, and the hall was kept open until 12:35 am to admit them all. The following day a funeral procession transferred the bodies to Euston station through streets crowded with mourners: the bodies were then taken to Cardington village for burial in a common grave in the cemetery of St Mary's church. A monument was later erected, and the scorched Royal Air Force Ensign which R101 had flown on its tail is on display, along with a memorial tablet, in the church's nave. On 27 November 2014, 84 years after the disaster, Baroness Smith of Basildon, together with members of the Airship Heritage Trust, unveiled a memorial plaque to the R101 in St Stephens Hall in the Palace of Westminster.         Moby Dick or The Whale.

Chicago: The Lakeside Press,, 1930. Illustrated by Rockwell Kent. 3 volumes, quarto. Original black cloth over bevelled boards, decoration to the upper boards and titles to spines in silver, top edges stained black, others uncut. With the aluminium slipcase. Illustrated throughout by Rockwell Kent. Spines lightly sunned, covers slightly rubbed, a few scuffs and scratches to the slipcase, some light offsetting from plates to letterpress, paper flaw in margin of penultimate leaf in volume I otherwise a very good set. First Rockwell Kent edition, limited to 1,000 sets. Presentation copy from the illustrator, inscribed on the front free endpaper of volume I: "Inscribed to Miss Effie Branch by Rockwell Kent. 1930"; the recipient was a member of the Branch family of Richmond, Virginia, whose most distinguished member was the writer James Branch Cabell. One of the finest editions of Melville's masterpiece and one of the great American illustrated books of the 20th century. In 1926 Rockwell Kent (1882?-1971), then just beginning to establish his fame as an artist, was approached by R. R. Donnelley and Sons to illustrate a new edition of Richard Henry Dana's Two Years Before the Mast. Kent demurred, suggesting Moby Dick instead. Kent was given complete freedom to design and illustrate the three-volume set. The resulting work has been hailed as a masterpiece of 20th-century book illustration and credited with reviving public interest in a sublime but difficult novel.

Le Paradis Musulman. Selon le texte et la traduction du Dr. J.-C. Mardrus

Paris: F-L. Schmied, 1930. First edition. Schmied, Francois-Louis. One of 157 numbered copies on japon (total edition 177, including twenty for collaborators), signed by Schmied in the colophon. 13 x 10 inches, [32] leaves, (plus front and rear endpapers); 8 full-page color wood block illustrations, (including the cover) and 23 other designs. Original wrappers, fine condition, in publisher's blue cloth chemise and slipcase (the latter lightly used), with the bookplate of Charlotte de Biencourt, Comtesse de Cossé-Brissac. Nasti notes the incorporation in this volume of both Schmied's naturalistic style and abstract decorative motifs, and here for once the two styles seem to mesh in perfect harmony, producing the most beautiful of any of his books, and one of the most beautiful of any twentieth century volume, with complex and integrated illustrations. The title page alone according to Ritchie is "the most intricate of all Schmied's illustrations, requiring some forty-five different blocks ... it took almost two months to print that single page". The illustrations of the scribe and the man carrying a book are Schmied's self-portraits.

ORIGINAL 1930 TYPED LETTER, SIGNED (re: The Maltese Falcon, The Glass Key & The Thin Man)

New York, 1930. Hammett, Dashiell. ONE PAGE TYPED LETTER, SIGNED ["Sincerely, Dashiell Hammett"]. 135 East 38th Street, New York, April 21st, 1930. Highly desirable unpublished early letter from one of Hammett's most creatively fruitful years in which he makes mention of all three of his greatest novels. To "Dear Mr. Hammett" (Walter Hammett of Yale University in New Haven, who had initially written wondering -- incorrectly as it turned out -- if they shared any kin), it reads: "Thanks a lot for the latest of your always kind notes. The Falcon seems to be going over pretty well and I think Earl Boothe's going to produce it on the stage in the Fall if I can get time off from the current book to do the dramatization. The next book, 'The Glass Key' is scheduled for publication in September or October, and then 'The Thin Man' and 'The Darkened Face' in February and August, 1931. Beyond that deponent saith not. Best of luck to you with the poetry and otherwise." The letter, written only two months after the book publication of THE MALTESE FALCON has some irony to it as Dashiell Hammett's precision in rattling off titles and publication dates bore no reality to what came to pass. THE GLASS KEY wouldn't be published until 1931; THE THIN MAN didn't appear until 1934. As for "The Darkened Face" -- there is a fragment of a manuscript with that title at the Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas at Austin. It now appears to have been a planned novel which never came to full fruition. Nor did Hammett write a stage version of THE MALTESE FALCON for Earl Boothe; instead the novel was almost immediately adapted to film, released by Warner Brothers Studios as a pre-code 1931 crime drama full of sexual innuendo starring Ricardo Cortez and Bebe Daniels. The Selected Letters of Dashiell Hammett 1921-1960 (edited by Richard Layman) were indeed "selected from nearly one thousand letters" yet only a mere four letters date - as this letter does -- from 1930, the year Hammett published THE MALTESE FALCON. Apart from two neat folds, the letter is in Fine, crisp condition. Custom slipcase.. Signed by Author. Fine.

A Treatise On Money: In Two Volumes.

New York: Harcourt, Brace & Company, 1930. First American editions of each volume. Octavo, two volumes, original cloth. Each volume is fine in the original dust jackets which have had some professional restoration. "In 1930, Keynes brought out his heavy, two-volume Treatise on Money, which effectively set out his Wicksellian theory of the credit cycle. In it, the rudiments of a liquidity preference theory of interest are laid out and Keynes believed it would be his magnum opus[however, criticism was swift and extreme] and the Treatise led to the formation of a reading group, known as ?'the circus,?' composed of young Cambridge economists Richard Kahn and others Kahn dutifully delivered reports of the Circus?'s discussions to Keynes, who subsequently began revising his ideas. One resulting criticism of the Treatise was that it failed to provide a theory of the determination of output and employment as a whole— a particular pertinent question given the huge amount of unemployment at the time" (History of Economic Thought).

Second Edition (Corrected Impression of the First Edition). Oxford, Oxford University Press, 1930. Octavo. 211 pages. Original Hardcover. The book is squarely bound in the original publisher's cloth with gilt decoration; internally a little browning to pages. The ownership signature of 'D Rose 1936' appears on the first blank with further ink annotation to the text in the same hand. A very nice copy. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (Middle English: Sir Gawayn and þe Grene Kny?t) is a late 14th-century Middle English chivalric romance. It is one of the best known Arthurian stories, with its plot combining two types of folklore motifs, the beheading game and the exchange of winnings. The Green Knight is interpreted by some as a representation of the Green Man of folklore and by others as an allusion to Christ. Written in stanzas of alliterative verse, each of which ends in a rhyming bob and wheel, it draws on Welsh, Irish and English stories, as well as the French chivalric tradition. It is an important poem in the romance genre, which typically involves a hero who goes on a quest which tests his prowess, and it remains popular to this day in modern English renderings from J. R. R. Tolkien, Simon Armitage and others, as well as through film and stage adaptations. It describes how Sir Gawain, a knight of King Arthur's Round Table, accepts a challenge from a mysterious "Green Knight" who challenges any knight to strike him with his axe if he will take a return blow in a year and a day. Gawain accepts and beheads him with his blow, at which the Green Knight stands up, picks up his head and reminds Gawain of the appointed time. In his struggles to keep his bargain Gawain demonstrates chivalry and loyalty until his honour is called into question by a test involving Lady Bertilak, the lady of the Green Knight's castle. The poem survives in a single manuscript, the Cotton Nero A.x., which also includes three religious narrative poems: Pearl, Purity and Patience. All are thought to have been written by the same unknown author, possibly Cameron of Sutherland, dubbed the "Pearl Poet" or "Gawain Poet", since all four are written in a North West Midland dialect of Middle English (Wikipedia)

Bookplate of noted collector William Harry Hopkins affixed to front. paste-down. A fine copy in very good pictorial dust jacket (designed. by Hermann Post) with light wear at edges and two closed tears, each. with internal tape mend. A bright, attractive example of an uncommon. jacket. (#149271). First U.S. edition. The U.S. edition adds a preface by Wright dated "New York, January 15, 1930" that did not appear in the 1929 Collins edition. A superior novel in which Wright explores human evolution based on degeneration of the race due primarily to continual destruction of past civilizations through the misuse of scientific discoveries. Comprises "The Amphibians," first published in book form in 1925, and its sequel, "The World Below," first published here. A third book was planned but never written. The story is "set in the far future, when humans are extinct and forgotten ... the time traveling protagonist accidentally precipitates a crisis in the affairs of a race of telepathic Amphibians who coexist with the giant humanoid Dwellers ... the first part [is] an imaginative tour de force." - Anatomy of Wonder (1981) 2-128.
