BANALITÉ ILLUSTRÉ DE RÉOGRAMMES ET RECHERCHES D'OBJECTS DE LORIS ET PARRY.

Paris: Éditions de la Nouvelle Revue Française, 1930. Parry, Roger. Small folio, 80 pp. of poems and prose by Fargue, 16 photogravures. Faint stain to the blank margin of the upper leading corner of the last seven leaves, with slight tape stain in the top and bottom leading corners of the first and last blank leave, likely cause by an early protective over wrapper. Otherwise, a very good copy. Roger Parry (1905-1977) was inspired to illustrate, a surrealist work by André Breton's NADJA. He selected Fargue's book BANALITÉS (1922) for this project. Julien Levy, the American dealer (specializing in surrealism), became acquainted with Parry's photography through his appearance in PHOTOGRAPHIE and this work. Though the title page states that the illustrations are by Loris and Parry, in PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE JULIEN LEVY COLLECTION, David Travis (Art Institute of Chicago, 1976, p. 86) states, "it is assumed that these photographs are by Roger Parry, since Levy acquired them from him." Of the total edition, 332 copies were printed on Hollande Pannekoek, and 35 copies on Japon Imperial. This is one of 332 copies. One of the major photographic works in the surrealist canon.

(Bd. 2 u. 3).

        Peter Pan and Wendy.

London: Hodder and Stoughton, n.d., [c.1930]., 1930. FIRST HUDSON ILLUSTRATED EDITION. Published for Boots Pure Drug Co. Quarto. pp. 272. With 21 full-page colour illustrations and many more in-text or to margins. In recent Atkinson's full dark navy morocco with raised bands and gilt titles to orange label on spine. All edges gilt; marbled end-papers. Blue cloth with gilt titles and stamping from original upper board bound in at rear. A spotless, beautifully re-bound fine copy. Hudson illustrated just two carefully chosen classic fantasy books, namely J.M Barrie's Peter Pan and Wendy and Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures In Wonderland. Her Alice was printed in London in 1922, with Peter Pan following in 1930. Her illustrations, like Arthur Rackham's, were both full in colour or simpler silhouettes, and although very little is known of the artist, she was nevertheless a contemporary of Mable Lucy Atwell, Lucy Kemp Welsh and Virginia Sterrett during the golden age of Edwardian gift books. Her modest but exquisite output remains highly desirable today.

        Autograph postcard signed.

[Paris], 8 October 1930 - Oblong-8vo. 1 page. Joyce is asking his friend Frank Budgen to send him "that leaflet about the Book of the Dead" for "the artist who is doing the preface to pamphlet no. 4". The recto of the card with coloured photograph of the Paris Bourse. - Frank Budgen was a painter who had befriended Joyce in Zurich during World War I. The two shared ideas on aesthetic matters over many years, and their conversations are thought to haveinfluenced both Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. The influence of the Egyptian Book of the Dead on Finnegans Wake is also well established, and the pamphlet mentioned here may be E.A. Wallis Budge's The Book of the Dead, published by the British Museum in 1922 and known to have been used by Joyce. A number of extracts from what was then called Work in Progress were published in pamphlet form, the fourth of which to appear was The Mime of Mick Nick and the Maggies (1934), which included artwork by Lucia Joyce.Apparently unpublished: not in The Letters of James Joyce: Volume III (1966),ed. Ellman.

Pleasures for Little People. [Text Englisch].

THE SCARAB MURDER CASE.

Charles Scribner's Sons, 1930., 1930. First edition. This is the so-called "First Issue" with only a single date (1930) on the copyright page. Otto Penzler in his Descriptive Bibliography on S. S. Van Dine says "The capital letter "A" must appear on the copyright page. The "A" was dropped from all subsequent printings, the method by which Scribner's identified its first printings from 1930 to 1972." Fine, bright, tight copy with all lettering on the cloth bright and un-chipped, in a fine dust jacket with two tiny closed tears at head of spine. Philo Vance's elaborate murder investigation takes place in a museum of Egyptology. There is a great deal of material on ancient Egyptian art. An exceptional copy and certainly this state is much scarcer than the variant with two dates on the copyright page, although the variant state is also scarce.
