        Wolf Lies Down - Apsaroke

Boston: Suffolk Engraving Company, 1930. Photogravure after Edward Curtis, printed by the Suffolk Engraving Company, Japon paper. Very good condition apart from a mild surface abrasion in the top left corner of the plate mark. A breath-taking image from "The North American Indian", the grandest illustrated work ever produced in the United States, the most important illustrated work on Native Americans, and the single greatest book in Western Americana. Only the double-elephant folio edition of Audubon's "Birds of America" surpasses Curtis in its massive ambition and beauty of execution. "...Because of the singular combination of qualities with which he has been blessed, and because of his extraordinary success in making and using his opportunities... (Curtis) has been able to do what no other man has ever done; what, as far as we can see, no other man could do. He is an artist who works out of doors and not in a closet. He is a close observer, whose qualities of mind and body fit him to make his observations out in the field, surrounded by the wild life he commemorates. He has lived on intimate terms with many different tribes of the mountains and the plains. He knows them as they hunt, as they travel, as they go about their various avocations on the march and in camp. He knows their medicine men and their sorcerers, their chiefs and warriors, their young men and maidens. He has not only seen their vigorous outward existence, but has caught glimpses, such as few white men ever catch, into that strange spiritual and mental life of theirs; from whose inner most recesses all white men are forever barred...." (Theodore Roosevelt, Foreword to Volume I) A member of the Never Packs Game clan, Wolf Lies Down was a Mountain Crow leader, who fought against the Sioux in the Battle of Pryor Creek near Billings, Montana in 1860. According to Curtis, in "stature and in vigor the Apsaroke, or Crows, excelled all other tribes of the Rocky Mountain region, and were surpassed by none in bravery and in devotion to the supernatural forces that gave them strength against their enemies." (Volume IV) Originally planters from the upper Midwest, they inhabited the Plains and Prairies region of the United States, where they became hunters and skilled horsemen. Edward Curtis was fascinated by the story of the Native Americans from childhood. His in-depth knowledge of the various tribes increased in parallel with his skill as a photographer during his participation in a number of scientific expeditions in the 1890s. In 1896, Curtis began to take photographs of the Native American tribes (by 1930 he had taken over 40,000 negatives of eighty tribes) and evolve his hugely ambitious plan for a comprehensive work which would illustrate his romantic vision of Native American life before the disastrous impact of European contact. With the enthusiastic support of President Theodore Roosevelt (who wrote the foreword to the present work) and the financial backing of J. Pierpont Morgan (Curtis was introduced to him by Roosevelt), the publishing project finally got under way in 1906. Pierpont Morgan died in 1913 just before the completion of the ninth volume, but his son agreed to continue underwriting the project; between them, they eventually contributed about a third of the $1,500,000 cost. What had originally been projected to take five or six years eventually stretched to twenty-three, finally reaching a conclusion in 1930 but leaving Curtis a broken and bankrupt man. Nonetheless, his grand design was completed, and his work remains as his monument. Cf. Naef & Goldschmidt The Truthful Lens 40; cf. Howes C-965.

(Theodore Roosevelt, Foreword to Volume I) "Cree hunters are masters of the art of imitating, by means of a birch bark trumpet, the call of a moose of either sex, and thus luring within gunshot an animal seeking a mate during the rutting season." (Curtis, List of Large Plates Supplementing Volume Eighteen ) Close relations of the Ojibwa, the Crees were the chief tribe in Canada and one of the largest in North America. They inhabited an extensive western region north of the prairies and south of the Peace River and were comprised of two principal divisions, the Wood and Plains Cree, which consisted of numerous individual bands. Edward Curtis was fascinated by the story of the Native Americans from childhood.         BULLDOG DRUMMOND (Inscribed By the Film's Star, RONALD COLMAN)

New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1930. McNeile, Cyril. BULL-DOG DRUMMOND. NY: Grosset & Dunlap, (1929). First Photoplay Edition published in tandem with the 1929 Samuel Goldman film adaptation. NEAR FINE copy (one corner bumped, trifle wear) with 4 stills, including frontispiece, from the movie starring Ronald Colman as Bulldog Drummond, bored ex-military man turned detective. In its very scarce ORIGINAL DUST JACKET (tiny bit of chipping to the spine ends, a little soil, a little edge-wear, a touch of fade). INSCRIBED in ink on the front free endpaper to a collector (undated, but most likely in the early 1950s) BY RONALD COLMAN. Bulldog Drummond was not only Ronald Colman's first "talkie" but it was also the movie that allowed audiences to hear his extremely appealing voice and manner of speaking, launching his career as one of the biggest movie stars of the golden age of cinema. Ronald Colman (1891-1958) was nominated for an Oscar for his role in this film, one of four Oscar nominations he received (with one win in 1947 for A Double Life). He starred in such classics as Lost Horizon, Random Harvest, A Tale Of Two Cities, Beau Geste, Under Two Flags, Raffles, Prisoner of Zenda, the list is long and impressive as he was a remarkable talent. Film Source books inscribed by the stars of the film adaptation are of the utmost desirability and rarity. . Signed. Near Fine/Very Good.

A Treatise on Money. In Two Volumes. Volume I, The Pure Theory of Money. [-Volume II, The Applied Theory of Money.]

Macmillan and Co. Limited 1930 - FIRST EDITION, pp. [i], xvii, 363; [i], viii, 424, 8vo, original cloth, spines lettered in gilt, dust jackets, dust jackets a little dusty and with a hint of foxing, the foxing imparted to the end-leaves, very good. 'The first of Keynes's two major contributions to economic theory, A Treatise on Money, was published on 24 October 1930. The Treatise was the product of a long intellectual struggle to escape from the ideas in which he had been reared, later dubbed 'classical economics'; for example, the Ricardian view that supply creates its own demand. The focus of the book was on money and prices rather than on output and employment: it contained a full study of the operation of the monetary system, national and international. Fluctuations in prices were no longer explained in terms of changes in the stock of money as in the quantity theory, but in terms of the pressure of demand on the available supply of resources; and the pressure of demand was represented as varying with the magnitude of any divergence between the volume of investment and the availability of savings to finance it. The significance attached by Keynes to such a divergence reflected the success of Dennis Robertson (on whose ideas Keynes drew heavily in the years of the Treatise) in convincing Keynes that the major fluctuations in activity originated in booms in investment and that these could not be accounted for solely in terms of banking policy' (Alec Cairncross in ODNB).

        My Early Life

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1930. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is the first edition, first printing, first state of ChurchillÂ’s extremely popular autobiography. My Early Life covers the years from his birth in 1874 to his first few years in Parliament. One can hardly ask for more adventurous content. These were momentous and formative years for Churchill, including his time as a war correspondent and cavalry officer in theatres as varied as Cuba, northwest India, and sub-Saharan and southern Africa. This time contained a wide range of experiences in ChurchillÂ’s life. Not only was he developing as an author, publishing his first books, and making his first lecture tour of North America, but this was also the time of his capture and daring escape during the Boer War, which made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. Churchill would take his seat in Parliament only weeks after the end of Queen Victoria's reign. My Early Life remains one of the most popular and widely read of all Churchill's books. And for good reason, as the work certainly ranks among the most charming and accessible of his many books. An original 1930 review likened it to a "beaker of Champagne." That effervescent charm endures; a more recent writer called it "a racy, humorous, self-deprecating classic of autobiography." To be sure, Churchill takes some liberties with facts and perhaps unduly lightens or over-simplifies certain events, but this is eminently forgivable and in keeping with the wit, pace, and engaging style that characterizes the book. My Early Life sold very well at the time and has seen a great many editions since, many of them collectible in their own right, but of course a premium attaches to first editions. The challenge for collectors is that the plum colored binding of this edition proved especially susceptible to fading, soiling, and wear; nearly all copies are considerably spine faded. Moreover, the contents are susceptible to heavy spotting and the binding is often cocked. This helps explain why so many first editions of this book have been torn apart and rebound. This copy is original and unrestored, in very good overall condition. First state of the first printing is confirmed by 11 titles in the “Works By The Same Author” box on the half-title verso. The plum cloth binding remains square and tight with sharp corners with only light wear to extremities. The spine is moderately toned, but retains respectable color for the edition and clearly legible gilt. We note light overall soiling and a few stray, small ink marks to the lower spine. The contents show light intermittent spotting within and to the page edges. The sole previous ownership marks we find are previous owner initials and the date “Xmas. 1930.” Inked to the upper front free endpaper.         N by E A Record of Expeditioning North-By-East Across Baffin Bay and Beyond

New York: Brewer & Warren. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1930. 1st Trade Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; SIGNED EDITION. This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Very Good dust jacket. The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. The text pages are mostly clean and bright, but there is some light generalized toning to the endpapers and edges of the text block. The dust jacket has edge wear and nicking along with rubbing and tears to the spine ends and flaps. There is one chip missing from the middle spine of the dust jacket. Trade copies of this book with the dust jacket are actually quite scarce in comparison to the limnited edition. This copy has been signed, with an inscription on the front endpaper. "A transcendentalist and mystic in the tradition of Thoreau and Emerson, whose works he read, Kent found inspiration in the austerity and stark beauty of wilderness. After Monhegan, he lived for extended periods of time in Winona, Minnesota (1912?-1913), Newfoundland (1914?-15), Alaska (1918?-19), Vermont (1919?-1925), Tierra del Fuego (1922?-23), Ireland (1926), and Greenland (1929; 1931?-32; 1934?-35). His series of land and seascapes from these often forbidding locales convey the Symbolist spirit evoking the mysteries and cosmic wonders of the natural world. "I don't want petty self-expression", Kent wrote, "I want the elemental, infinite thing; I want to paint the rhythm of eternity.""; Signed by Author .

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

Oxford University Press,, Oxford, 1930 - Second Edition (Corrected Impression of the First Edition). Oxford, Oxford University Press, 1930. Octavo. 211 pages. Original Hardcover. A rare, crisp example of the corrected 1930 version of Tolkien and Gordon's edition of the great Middle English Poem, Sir Gawain. The book is squarely bound in the original publisher's cloth with gilt decoration; internally a little browning to pages. The ownership signature of 'D Rose 1936' appears on the first blank with further ink annotation to the text in the same hand. A very nice copy. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (Middle English: Sir Gawayn and þe Grene Kny?t) is a late 14th-century Middle English chivalric romance. It is one of the best known Arthurian stories, with its plot combining two types of folklore motifs, the beheading game and the exchange of winnings. The Green Knight is interpreted by some as a representation of the Green Man of folklore and by others as an allusion to Christ. Written in stanzas of alliterative verse, each of which ends in a rhyming bob and wheel, it draws on Welsh, Irish and English stories, as well as the French chivalric tradition. It is an important poem in the romance genre, which typically involves a hero who goes on a quest which tests his prowess, and it remains popular to this day in modern English renderings from J. R. R. Tolkien, Simon Armitage and others, as well as through film and stage adaptations. It describes how Sir Gawain, a knight of King Arthur's Round Table, accepts a challenge from a mysterious "Green Knight" who challenges any knight to strike him with his axe if he will take a return blow in a year and a day. Gawain accepts and beheads him with his blow, at which the Green Knight stands up, picks up his head and reminds Gawain of the appointed time. In his struggles to keep his bargain Gawain demonstrates chivalry and loyalty until his honour is called into question by a test involving Lady Bertilak, the lady of the Green Knight's castle. The poem survives in a single manuscript, the Cotton Nero A.x., which also includes three religious narrative poems: Pearl, Purity and Patience. All are thought to have been written by the same unknown author, possibly Cameron of Sutherland, dubbed the "Pearl Poet" or "Gawain Poet", since all four are written in a North West Midland dialect of Middle English (Wikipedia) Sprache: English A rare, crisp example of the corrected 1930 version of Tolkien and Gordon's edition of the great Middle English Poem, Sir Gawain.         Destiny: A Novel in Pictures

New York: Farrar & Rinehart, Incorporated, 1930. First Edition. Hardcover. Square octavo [20 cm] Tan cloth with black printed titles on front board and backstrip. Very good/Very good. Jacket that has a few small chips at the extremities with losses and some minor corresponding creasing. This is likely a prepublication/review copy, due to the color of the boards (we have handled quite a few copies of this work over the years, and we have never handled a copy in tan boards) and laid in is a typed slip, that reads: "THIS BOOK IS PUBLISHED MARCH 7". Nückel's only wordless novel is made up of striking leadcut images, but in the tradition of the work of (early) Lynd Ward and Frans Masereel. "This pitiless story of a girl of the lower classes is curt, bare and powerful. The baseness of the underworld milieu is drawn with unsparing line; but the tale is lifted out of the merely lurid by the honesty of the artist's feelings, by his mastery of his medium. It reaches pure tragedy" - publisher blurb

WORLD MAP WITH ANIMAL HABITATS: WELTKARTE DER GEOGRAPHISCHEN VERBREITUNG DER PELZTIERE.

      - This extraordinary German language map depicts the entire World on a Mercator Projection, with the territories of various nations expressed in different colours. Most interestingly, the images and of dozens of different types of fur-bearing animals appear in their respective habitats, presented in an elegant and understated style. The map was published shortly before World War I by the famous furrier Emil Brass, as both an educational tool and a commercial promotional piece. At some point during the 1930s, the map was adopted as an advertising piece by the Leipzig furrier of Kittel & Franke (founded 1930), who placed their pastedown over Brass’s original imprint (in the lower left corner). The pastedown: "Kittel & Franke, Spezialität: Fohlen - Kalbfelle - Kanin. Import / Export. Leipzig C1, Brühl 68". While undated, the map can be dated from between 1912 and 1914. The international and colonial borders reflect the state of play between 1912 (when as shown, Italy acquired control over Libya) and the end of World War I. The German Empire is shown to possess large colonies in Africa and the South Pacific, while Britain’s Empire, upon which the "Sun never Set," is shown in its prime. That being said, this is clearly a peacetime map, so it dates from before the end of the summer of 1914. The present map was devised and published by Emil Brass (1856 - 1938), the foremost commercial furrier of his era and an international academic authority on fur-bearing animals and related aspects of geography. He travelled widely around the world and lived in China for some time. He was an eccentric figure who sported a long beard, dirty clothing and was something of a celebrity in his hometown of Berlin. In 1904, he founded a magazine on the fur Industry and related scientific matters, Neue Pelzwaren- und Kürschnerzeitung. He wrote a famous book on fur-bearing animals, Aus dem Reiche der Pelze (1911), which proved highly popular and was reissued in an expanded edition in 1924. Brass was fascinated by geographical questions, especially as they related to animals, and he spent many days in Paris Bibliothèque nationalecopying maps. He was a member of Britain’s Royal Geographical Society and served as president of the Gesellschaft für Erdkunde zu Berlin (the Geographical Society of Berlin) from 1919 to 1931. He was likewise a close friend of the African explorer Otto Kersten. The present map represents Brass’s largest and most visually striking geographical production. In his latter years, Brass became a recluse. When he died in March 1938, only three people knew about it, and the exact date of his death remains a mystery. Brass’s fur map is a curious and attractive piece and like most ephemera / advertising maps, it is very rare.
