Christopher Robin & Asparagus: an Autograph Letter by A A Milne, author of Winnie the Pooh

London, Chelsea - Cheam: Unpublished, 1930 Book. Very Good. No Binding. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Autograph letter by A A Milne on '13 Mallord Street' headed paper (Christopher Robin's birthplace) discussing the boy's education and, in a comic aside, the Christopher Robin's diet, with a woman friend whom he'd recently met over dinner at Cheam School in Surrey: 'I'm wondering whether I oughtn't to have sent my boy to your school. Would he have had asparagus and a hot bath on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday? Well, it's too late now; but I'm sure you will be glad to hear that he is very happy at Boxgrove, and on friendly terms with everyone.' The letter which is dated May 22nd 1930 is written in black ink and signed in full. An early owner has removed the stamp from Milne's accompanying envelope and in so doing torn away a 3cm square from the lower right corner and left closed tears to the top right corner, catching Milne's flourish below his signature. This letter was inspired by a long typed poem sent by Mrs Taylor after her shared dinner with Milne and the letter was originally accompanied by the gift of fresh asparagus (see accompanying article in the Weekend Review): 'freshly cull'd from well cared beds... Your wife may say, "My dear, I really wish/ We knew who sent us this delightful dish?.... Turn your thoughts back to one cold winter's eve/ When Educational dinner you would leave... Remember how you peered into the gloom/ And heard a voice say "Sir, I'll take you home...' In his reply Milne thanks Mrs Taylor for her gift, acknowledging 'It was delightful like your poem...' Despite his reported good humour as a child in this letter Christopher Robin would come to resent what he saw as his father's exploitation of his childhood in the adventures of Winnie the Pooh and Christopher Robin and even A A Milne himself, writing in 1952 had to concede that he wrote them 'little thinking / All my years of pen-and-inking / Would be almost lost among / Those four trifles for the young'. The almost mythic story surrounding the creation of the characters of Winnie the Pooh and Christopher Robin has recently been reworked in the 2017 feature film, Goodbye Christopher Robin. Letters by A A Milne mentioning Christopher Robin are very uncommon. Please contact Christian White at Modernfirsteditions if you would like more information about this book..

        [Chess manuscript]

New York [?], 1930. 103-page quarto manuscript in double column, kept in a cloth-backed marbled-board binding presumably by Louis Apanowitz who apparently wrote a weekly column on chess for an unnamed newspaper, containing notes and summaries of chess matches and players (including death notices and short obituaries as well as short book reviews), and including detailed move-by-move accounts of matches between Salo Flohr and Emanuel Lasker; Adolf Anderssen and Lionel Kieseritzky; J. A. Blackburne and George Henry Mackenzie; George A. Ritzler and N. L. Colfax; Ruben Fine and Ernst Gruenfeld; Arnold Denker and Donald MacMurray, William Steinitz and Curt von Bardelebew; Dr. Max Euwe and Edgar Colle, and many others, most with a rather detailed commentary on moves and blunders. Most matches described are during the period 1880s to 1930s. Each "article" is headed by a number in Roman numerals (nos. XIX to LXXII inclusive) likely indicating a series of articles in the unnamed periodical. Much also on the Suburban Chess League and both the South- and North Jersey Chess Associations, and the Metropolitan Chess League of New York City. The manuscript drops off mid-sentence. Bound dos-a-dos is a 20-page color illustrated manuscript headed "Biology" with a number of reasonably accurate color drawings of a sunflower, red foxes, rats, bunsen burners, flasks, bell jars, etc. We believe this manuscript is subsequent to the chess manuscript described above.

Vienna: Lidová knihtiskárna Ant. Machát a spol, 1930. Small quartos (ca. 25 × 19.5 cm each, last four issues 24 × 16 cm). Original decorative wrappers with an attractive understated typographic design that varies slightly through the years; ca. 24 pp. each. Advertisements. Very good condition throughout; occasional light wear to overlapping wrapper edges. Set of four complete yearly runs, as well as one special jubilee issue, of this undocumented Czech-language journal of the interwar Czech student community in Vienna, billed as the only independent Czech journal in Vienna. "Náraz" contains articles on the cultural and political interests of the Czech minority in Austria, reflections on student life and the life of the young generation in Vienna, as well as overviews of Czech modernist art and literature, and even occasional original poetry and prose. Some of the contributions also concern contemporary philosophy, such as the conflict between pragmatism and idealism. Of particular interest are the literary articles by Alexandr Hlin ný on Vitezslav Nezval's prose and on modernist Czech poetry. The authors of original poetry included in "Naraz" are Jiří Janoušek, Václav Hrubý, K. J. Kraus, Alois Hoffmann, Jan Hořký, Pavel Stránský, Miroslav Bidlas, and Maria Franzlová. The wrappers are illustrated with an appealing typographic design (unattributed) and each issue contains numerous advertisements of Czech businesses in Vienna, often set in appealing typography. Genuinely rare; not even held at the Czech National Library, KVK, OCLC only shows a single issue at Universitätsbibliothek Wien.

Klusums : dzimteniga dzeja (The Silence : Motherland's Poetry)

Laikmets, Riga 1930 - Latvian language. Octavo 13 x 18 cm. Weight 40 g. Wrappers, 29 [2] pp. The book is in Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Book staples are slightly rusted and cover has began to detach at one staple, bookstore stamp on the back cover, otherwise perfect. Current book of verses was written while its author was imprisoned in 1928 for an illegal publication issued on behalf Latvian Independent Socialist party, of which he was a prominent member. By this time author became a convinced Marxist and his early avant-garde ideas are now expressed in "revolutionary" leftist nature poetry with a sharp critics of the capitalist world. These poems of hight artistic quality and laconic rhythm of verse, had a great impact on the development of Latvian Democratic literature. Book's noticeable cover design with strong constructivist approach was created by an unattributed in the colophon author, presumably by Niklavs Strunke - the style is very typical for him, and he created a number of similar works for the author. Andrejs Kurcijs (1884-1959) was leftist experimental poet, literary- and art critic, popularizer of the European avant-garde trends, mainly Expressionism and Activism, in Latvia. He was also a key member of "Riga Activist", the most remarkable Latvian avant-garde movement of the 1920s. Niklavs Strunke (1894 – 1966) famous artist, representative of radical phase in Latvian avant-garde, whose art is known by Cubist and Constructivist influences, also his works attest to the interest in Italian art and Latvian folk art. Member of the cult Riga Artists Group. Works in the field of book design feature refined stylization, ornateness and simplicity of forms, clarity, purity, and primitivism.         Romantika autobusa : dzeju cikls (Romantic of the Bus : Cycle of Poems)

Tagadne, Riga 1930 - Latvian language. Octavo 11 x 16 cm. Weight 40 g. Wrappers, 48 [4] pp. The book is in Near Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Book cover shows minor foxing and very slight soiling to the spine edge; internally few occasional foxing spots. Current book can be considered as one of the best examples of leftist Avant-Garde in Latvian literature. Author's third cycle of poems was published in 1930, while he was close to the leftist "Trauksme" (Alarm) group of young poets influenced by Futurism and Constructivism. Members of the group were focused on the aspects of contemporary urban life and social contradictions, and current book of poems became a remarkable example of this movement. In order to reveal a new reality author, using the sharp contrasts of expressionism, depicted the city in his verses. He turned to suburbs and port areas, factories and working-class dwellings, favourite images were the beggars and the poor. In the poems dominates sad and pessimistic mood, skepticism and bravado, motives of loneliness and human alienation. Pavils Vilips (1901-1979) social-democratic Latvian poet, essayist and translator, collaborated with leading periodical editions, published about 15 poetry collections, also plays and prose writings. Book's cover is an amazing example of Constructivism created by Latvian and Soviet Avant-Garde graphic artist, devoted Communist Ernest Kalis (1904-1939), who is best known for avant-garde book and periodic designs, and producing of political posters. Was a Member of the Presidency of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia. Participated in the revolutionary movement, and was repressed in 1937. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

ZIONISM: A collection of manuscripts and typescripts written by a participant in the Revisionist Zionist movement

Palestine, 1930-43 31 items comprising 105 pages, 90 manuscript and 15 typescript, all in Hebrew. Various sizes. Generally in good condition. This collection of Zionist essays, letters, and other papers documents a crucial period during the British Mandate in Palestine. The author, Aryeh (Simochony) Friedlansky, was a member of the Revisionist Zionist movement founded by Ze'ev Jabotinsky. These newly discovered documents shed valuable light in the history of Revisionist Zionism. "Revisionists produced a rich corpus of writings on a wide range of topics, in the process creating a radical new vision of the Hebrew national revival" (Kaplan, The Jewish Radical Right). At its core Revisionist Zionism was nationalist and thus was at odds with Labor Zionism, the mainstream political system dominating Jewish institutions at the time. These papers record Revisionist Zionism's opposition to many of the political developments of the 1930s. Revisionist Zionism was a "comprehensive national philosophy that sought to refashion every aspect of Jewish national life in its image, a philosophy whose political and cultural imprint is still very much evident in modern-day Israel" (Kaplan). Subjects include: the formation and constitution of Friedlansky's Youth Group Union in Jerusalem in 1930, the Betar youth movement, Herzl, Jabotinsky, "A Letter to the High Commissioner of the British Mandate of Palestine," pro-Arab bias among the British, the rise of violence against Jews in Palestine, Arab riots, promotion of sports among Jewish youth, military service, conscription, and the promotion of a national spirit among Jews in Palestine. Many of the Revisionist documents in this collection demonstrate the movement's campaign for militant action. Several papers concern Jabotinsky's Betar, a Revisionist Zionist youth movement intended to abolish the "ghetto" mentality of the Jewish people and to cultivate a new kind of Jew powerful enough to build the state of Israel. In "The Sportive and Cultural Work in Betar," Friedlansky discusses how Jews must become strong and physically powerful in order to protect themselves. "The Question of Legion" and "Betar: A Movement of Liberation" oppose the stereotype of Jew as coward, arguing that a positive militaristic spirit must be instilled in Jewish youth. Unlike members of the Labor movement who saw themselves as workers tied to the land, "young Revisionists saw themselves as warriors, the leaders in the fight for independence" (Kaplan). This rare survival documents a major force in the development of the modern state of Israel. "The Revisionists embodied the dark side of the Zionist dream, and the violent and militaristic element that they represented has been ignored and overlooked by both the Zionist (and Israeli) academic and the political leadership ..." (Kaplan). This unusual collection merits preservation and scholarly investigation. A detailed description and inventory is available on request.

        [Photo Album]: 1930's Java, Indonesia

Java, Indonesia, 1930. Near Fine. Oblong quarto measuring 8.5" x 12". String-tied textured tan paper wrappers A collection of 94 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver snap shot photographs measuring between 2.25" x 3.25" and 3.5" x 10.5", with some captions in Dutch. Album and photographs are near fine or better. A photo album depicting life in Java in the 1930s. The images depict an upper middle class group of people complete with officers in uniform, possibly Dutch, as they made up a large amount of the population during this decade and the captions appear to be in Dutch. Java is shown, it's building, peoples, and gatherings of the Dutch community are seen here. A beach scene shows some native Indonesians sitting besides the Dutch as well as people traveling through the countryside in relatively early automobiles and eating coconuts. The last few photographs show some sort of women's swimming event at a pool and includes two panoramic photos from the late 1930s. Due to a history of trade between the two countries, the Dutch played a significant part in the development of Indonesia and ruled the country until the Japanese took over during World War II. An interesting assemblage of photos depicting Dutch-ruled Indonesia leading up to World War II.
