Hawaii, 1928. Very Good. Oblong octavo. Decorative paper boards measuring 7" x 10". Contains 97 sepia toned photographs measuring between 2" x 2.75" and 6" x 10" and affixed to stiff gray paper with captions. Additionally laid in are newspaper clippings and a Hawaii photogram booklet. Very good album with creasing and tears with mostly near fine photographs with some edgewear.A photo album kept while on a cruise to Hawaii in February of 1928 on the S.S. President Garfield. The album begins on board with the travelers sunbathing and having a good time on the sea along with shots of the boat itself. They arrived in Honolulu in March of that year, a picture of their arrival shows them throwing streamers from the deck. The travelers took trips to the Dole pineapple farm, went on a boat trip past the Leper Colony Kalaupapa, although they didn't disembark, and watched the sunset over Maui. A section of photos depicts a visit to the Hilo Boys Industrial School in Waialee, a reform school for boys consisting of roughly 100 Hawaiian boys convicted of assaulting their guardians. The photos mostly show the school grounds and complex with one photo showing the boys on the Hilo pier. There are also photographs of a flag raising at the Royal School, a boarding school for the royal children of Hawaii. There are photographs of a visit to Manana Island, referred to as Rabbit Island because at a distance it looks like a rabbit's head, and other images of beach frolicking near Kailua Bay. A small selection of larger prints shows the rock faces and cliffs of the Hawaiian coast. The entirety … [Click Below for Full Description]

Petite tache marginale.

Academia, Leningrad, 1928. 94 pp. 18x13 cm. In original wrappers and dustwrappers with same portrait by N.E. Radlov. Tears and losses of fragments of the spine of both wrappers, text block is detached from the wrappers. Otherwise good and internally clean. First edition. One of 5000 copies. Scarce. First book in the series ''Masters of Modern Literature'' edited by B. Kazansky and Y. Tynianov. Includes bibliography, ''Zoshchenko's Language'' by V. Vinogradov, ''Ways of Zoshenko'' by A. Barmin, ''About Zoshcheko and Big Literature'' by Shklovsky, and Zoshchenko's short essay about himself, his critics and work. This book was banned (Babel', Pil'nyak and Kol'tsov who were considered enemies of the state were mentioned in the book). It should also be taken into account that at that time the very name of Zoshchenko looked odious in the eyes of Glavlit officials. The writer was subjected to constant censorship attacks, beginning in 1923. For example two books he created in close cooperation with the satirical artist and art critic N. Radlov (1889-1942) were arrested for drawings and signatures under them. Mikhail Mikhailovich Zoshchenko (1894-1958) was a Soviet author and satirist. He always very sharply noticed not only the funny in the ordinary, but also the changes of time - he felt them. The stories of Mikhail Zoshchenko of the 1920s were adored by emigration - and this was alarmed by the party leadership. As often happens, good satire usually leads to bad: for many years Zoshchenko was in disgrace and earned an anonymous life of translations and shoe repair. He was awarded … [Click Below for Full Description]

Breakenridge, William Milton
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1928. Octavo. 256p. A marvelous inscription on the front free endpaper to Dorothy Lofdell: "May this story ..recall to your memory some of the pleasant hours in Tombstone where "Helldorado" was born, and by closing your eyes may you see a vision of what Tombstone was in the palmy days of 1881."--signed, William M. Breakinridge, Tucson, AZ, Oct. 31, 1918.As Larry Kellner wrote in Arizoniana, William Milton Breakenridge was the deadliest two-gun deputy of Arizona.Besides his career as a deputy sheriff and detective for the Southern Pacific Railroad, he served Arizona as a scout, surveyor and finally author of this book.Even while a deputy sheriff in Cochise County, Curly Bill's partner in crime Tom Wallace had threatened Breakenridge, Curly Bill made Wallace apologize since he did not want to be on the wrong side of the sheriff. The Earp Brothers, Johnny Behan and John P. Clum were part of posses that pursued wild Apaches, stage coach robbers and others. Breakenridge knew Johnny Ringo who carried Greek and Latin classics in his saddlebags which he could read. Since Curly Bill, Johnny Ringo and Earp Brothers gambled together, Breakenridge began to distance himself from the Earps, so he coined the term"Helldorado" which became the title of this book.Jeff Dykes said that this memoir "provides a revealing look at the sheriff's office from the underside, the view of the deputy sheriff." Besides the inscription on the front endpaper, he has boldly signed his name also under the frontispiece with the note-- Old Pueblo Club, Tucson, Arizona. One of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

[WOMEN] SANGER, Margaret
New York: Brentano's, 1928. First Edition. Hardcover. Sanger's third book, a compilation of more than 400 letters received from mothers (and some fathers) who, despite being unfit, unready, or unwilling to bear and raise children, found themselves pregnant and without recourse. Published partially as a response to critics who had claimed that Sanger's advocacy for birth control benefitted only middle-class women, the book is a harrowing survey of the woes of unwanted childbirth, especially among the economically disadvantaged. The Author's Edition, limited to 500 copies, is uncommon. Octavo. Gray cloth boards, lettered in black on spine and front cover; black top-stain; xvix, 446pp. Author's Edition, limited to 500 numbered copies for presentation; this number 422. Lower board corners just rubbed, top-stain slightly uneven, else straight, tight, and unmarked, free of markings or wear, lacking the dustwrapper.

Bronx, New York: [Enrico Arrigoni], 1928-29. First Edition. Eresia was founded in 1928 by the Italian-American bricklayer Enrico Arrigoni as a journal of individualist anarchism. Nine issues appeared before publication was suspended in March 1929; three more issues would be published in 1931-2. Only the first nine issues are included here. Arrigoni (1898-1988) was a Milanese anarchist, laborer, and social critic; after immigrating to the U.S. ca. 1925 he began contributing to Italian-American journals under the pseudonym "Frank Brand." Arrigoni remained active well into old age, publishing work as late as the 1980s. He was especially active in the movement to aid Cuban anarchists who were persecuted following the 1959 revolution. Eresia forms an important bridge between the Italian-American insurrectionary anarchist tradition of the early 20th century and post-WW2 libertarianism, and it is uncommon: OCLC notes two holdings in North America (Michigan & NYPL), a few others in Europe, of varying degrees of completeness. Nine consecutive issues (issued irregularly), bound into patterned paste-paper boards. Quarto; each issue 32pp; some illus. Binding chipped at corners; moderate wear and toning to contents, including an obtrusive, amateur scotch-tape repair to gutter of issue no. 9; still Good, solidly bound and complete, with no markings or loss. Text entirely in Italian.

Tsiolkovsky, Konstantin (Tsiolkovskii, Ciolkowski, Ziolkowski, 1857-1935)
Kaluga: self-published, 1928. Octavo (26 × 17.9 cm). Original printed wrappers; 17 pp. Illustrations. Owner inscription of Nikolai A. Varvarov; about very good. Konstantin Tsiolkovsky (also Tsiolkovskii, Ciolkowski, or Ziolkowski; 1857-1935), the Russian aviation and astronautics pioneer, was one of the founding fathers of rocket science and an important inspiration to the Soviet space program, who also furthered Western research in the field. He was largely an autodidact who operated a small aerodynamics laboratory in his own apartment in provincial Kaluga; his early works were published by himself in small numbers and without outside funding and are today very scarce. Although he is now considered a major pioneer in his field, Tsiolkovsky failed to be acknowledged for his achievements for most of his career, gaining some recognition only in the early 1930s. His work is especially interesting insofar as it is not only scientifically motivated, but closely connected to the Russian cultural and philosophical movement of Cosmism. This pamphlet presents in full the basic design and instructionsn for Tsiolkovsky's proposed airship, to be made of corrugated sheet metal and pressurized with gas. Our copy stems from the personal collection of Nikolai A. Varvarov, the head of the astronautics section of the Russian civil defense organization in the 1950s, and an author of popular works on space flight (with his signature to the front wrapper). Scarce, with KVK and OCLC showing copies only at Michigan and ETH Zurich.

Limericks.) [later MS title on fly-leaf] THE BOOK OF LIMERICKS.
circa, 1928. a feint ruled album with 230 typed limericks on slips of paper pasted onto the pages, juxtaposed above with cut out steel-engraved illustrations, pp. 230, the last leaf with a needle (sharp, and a little rusted) pinned to it, 4to, contemporary/original red linen backed marbled boards, spine weakening (largely due to the increase of bulk, thanks to the additions). The limericks here collected are of the type that Don Marquis identifies as LIMERICKS. The chief glory of this collection, beyond the lubricity of the lyrics themselves, is their extremely clever juxtaposition with melodramatic illustrations from Penny Dreadfuls: they may be said to lift the lid on Victorian prudery and hypocrisy. We have not identified any particular publications, but some examples are signed by such artists as Crowquill, Nicholson, and John Swain. The collection is datable to about 1928. A few appear in Norman Douglas's anthology, and others in Gershorn Legman's anthology of 1953, where commensurate dates are assigned. Contemporary references to Freud, Stopes, and a Seven Horse Austin, reinforce this dating. The one concerning Freud was composed by Philip Hestletine, and was published in The Weekend Book in 1927: here, the last word is 'phalluses' rather than the coy 'fallacies' in Legman. About a quarter of the limericks here are anthologised by Legman, but many are not, so there are probably some original.

Photographie originale / Original photograph
// Circa 1928 // Tirage argentique d'époque // Format (cm): 18x24
