Uue kunsti raamat. Neue Kunst in Estland. L'art nouveau en Estonie. Eesti Kunstnikkude Ryhma almanak [Almanac of the Estonian Artists' Group]. Edited by Märt Laarman

Tallinn: Eesti Kunstnikkude Ryhm, 1928. Octavo (22 × 18 cm). Original pictorial wrappers by Märt Laarman; 80 pp. Tipped-in color frontis; sixty four pages of black-and-white reproductions. Wrappers rebacked, with restoration to spine and lower corner of rear wrapper; internally very good, save for tiny owner inscription to title page. First and only edition of Laarman's important "New Book of Art," a representative overview of Estonian avant-garde art, sculpture, and architecture meant to propagate these new forms both domestically and abroad. The EKR was one of the main organizations propagating cubo-futurist tendencies in Estonia throughout the 1920s and early 1930s. With an introduction by the editor, Estonian artist Märt Laarman, as well as summaries in French and German. The numerous illustrations, on sixty-four pages, showcase the best cubist and constructivist paintings, woodcuts, decorative arts, stage design and sculpture produced in Estonia at the time, by artists such as Felix Johansen, Eduard Ole, Edmond Arnold Blumenfeldt, Arnold Akberg, and Laarman himself. At the time, in fact, the book led to some international recognition for the new Estonian art: "Laarman ensured that copies were sent to influential artists and art critics across Europe, with the art historian Michel Seuphor and Theo van Doesburg being amongst those to receive copies. The Book of New Art made an impact on the de Stijl movement's leader, for, as Mai Levin recounts, he praised it in terms of design quality and content, and included a favorable review in his own journal" (Blackwood, "Mapping Estonian Modernism: Märt Laarman and the Eesti Kunstnikkude Ryhm,"2007, 94). With striking use of typography throughout (vertical and horizontal image captions, frames and bars constructed of type). KVK, OCLC show copies at the British Library, Getty, Helsinki, and Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin only.

        ALL THE CONSPIRATORS

London: Jonathan Cape, 1928. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. The author's first book, an anti-heroic story about a young man who is defeated by his mother. Heavily indebted to E.M. Forester, and to a lesser extent to James Joyce and Virginia Woolf, the novel is studiedly avant-garde in its cinematic montages, stream of consciousness, abrupt shifts in points of view, coded language, and consequent obscurity. Octavo. Original mustard cloth binding, with purple titles. Mild dust staining to the top edge. The spine is a trifle sun faded; otherwise very good. Accompanied by a pristine facsimile dust jacket.

[a]s varied as the American scene.” “Virginia Hamill, one of the first American women in the field of industrial design, [and] called herself a “decorative art consultant.” Under this broad title, she gained prominence as an exhibition organizer and designer, retail merchandiser, product stylist, and interior designer and educator.       New York: T.B. Harms, 1928. First edition. Quarto, 268 pages. Original illustrated wrappers, cloth spine. Some minor wear and staining. The scarce first edition of the original Broadway version, published in April 1928, with the title page dated "MCMXXVIII".       Greece, Sicily, Turkey, France, 1928-29 - Contains 101 gelatin silver print photographs and 19 postcards mounted onto taupe cardstock leaves, with manuscript captions throughout. (Most of these views pertain to Greece, a scant few to Sicily and Turkey; 21 photographs and 16 postcards pertain to France.) Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 8 x 5 cm, and the largest 13 x 8,5 cm. Oblong 8vo. string-tied album with paper boards, measuring approximately 31 x 25 cm. Wear to boards, otherwise in Very Good Condition. A photographic celebration of antiquity exudes from this album, with views of towering pillars, grand theatres, mythological statues, an underground occult sanctuary, imposing stone structures. numerous relics erected by formidable ancient civilizations and since reduced to rubble and mystery. Rather uncommon are the photographs of the ruins of ancient Eleusis, where the Eleusinian Mysteries took place, with a close-up view of the entablature of the Lesser Propylaea or gateway. Scenes in Olympia begin with a view of the Kladeos Valley, followed by the Temple of Hera columns, the fallen pillars of Zeus, and Kronos Hill which Greeks believe to be the birthplace of Zeus. Knossos is also highlighted by the photographer's lens, which illustrate its famous giant pithois (jars), a wall of frescoes, and an area which was then undergoing restoration. At Athens' ancient acropolis, photographs show the following: the Propylaea, a monumental gateway into the acropolis; the Parthenon; Theseion - the Temple of Hephaestus or Hephaisteion; the Erechtheion temple; the Temple of Athena Nike which is the earliest fully Ionic temple; the Theatre of Dionysus, called Eleuthereus; the immense pillars and remnants of the Temple Olympian Zeus; Asclepeion temple - a healing place dedicated to Greek god of medicine; a lovely view of Caryatids of the Erechtheion [About 50 years after this photograph was taken, in 1978, five of the caryatids would be removed to the Acropolis Museum and replaced with replicas.]; the entrance to the underground Asklepion sacred spring and shrine, situated beneath the Parthenon, and formerly used for healing rituals which involved snakes; the 11th century Byzantine Monastery known as Daphni of Dafni, situated a few miles outside of Athens.

Harrap & Co., [1928].Limited to 250 numbered copies for England (this copy being No. 211) and 125 copies for the United States, signed by Arthur Rackham. Quarto (10 1/8 x 7 7/8 inches; 258 x 200 mm.). 102, [1], [1, blank] pp. Eight color plates and thirty drawings in black and white. Minimal marginal foxing throughout, otherwise fine.Bound ca. 1992 by Sangorski & Sutcliffe for E. Joseph (stamp-signed in gilt on front turn-in) in full dark green crushed levant morocco. Covers ruled in gilt, front cover pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt to match the original 1928 cover design, spine paneled and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt-ruled board edges and decorative gilt turn-ins, top edge gilt, others uncut, original color printed pictorial endpapers. A fine copy.By 1928, the traditional Rackham book - freely and lavishly illustrated, and lushly produced - was, culturally no longer in fashion nor financially feasible. Artistically, Rackham's work was being overshadowed by a younger generation. Publisher George Harrap stepped in, took up the challenge, and, through production economies, published a new kind of Rackham book. But if the volumes were not as spectacular as in the past, the artwork was no less impressive.Latimore and Haskell, pp. 63-64. Riall, pp. 164-165.
