        DECLINE AND FALL

Chapman & Hall 1928 - Second impression. Original red and black patterned boards lettered in gilt. Inscribed by Waugh on the front free endpaper "For Desmond MacCarthy from Evelyn Waugh with his gratitude Dec 1928." Later ownership inscription to front pastedown. A very good copy, slightly cocked with some wear to the spine ends. Six full page line drawings by the author. Desmond MacCarthy was a literary critic who since 1928 had been the editor of the monthly review Life And Letters. He commissioned Waugh to write an essay on Ronald Firbank for the March 1929 issue, and in 1931 published the first chapter of Black Mischief in the magazine. Sykes describes MacCarthy at this time as Waugh's "influential admirer". Waugh seemed happy to repay his patronage in nepotism and so, for a short time in 1932, Waugh employed MacCarthy's daughter Rachael as his secretary. A fine association copy of the author's brilliant first novel, described by Connolly as "anarchic and experimental, surely one of the wittiest and most original of first novels." Connolly 99: 58; Sykes 97, 117 [Attributes: Soft Cover]

TYPED LETTER SIGNED BY SUSAN GLASPELL REGARDING THE PREMIERE OF HER PLAY "THE COMIC ARTIST".

Provincetown, MA: June 25, [1928]. [1928]. - - Quarto [approximately 11 inches high by 8-1/2 inches wide]. Approximately 268 typed words filling one side of a sheet of cream stock. Signed "Susan Glaspell" with a handwritten P.S. The edges of the sheet are slightly darkened. Folded 3 times for mailing. Together with the original mailing envelope. Very good. A splendid letter to actor Morgan Farley who had just opened, playing the part of Karl Rolf, in "The Comic Artist", a play by Glaspell and her husband Norman Matson, at the Strand Theatre, London. "Norman and I were so happy to have your letter, and know you were to play Karl. We always thought of you for it, but you were very much occupied at the time, so we did not venture to hope for you. How we should love to have been in London last night and seen you and the play and the audience. / I'd love a line telling how things went. Yours is a first production of the play, so we've never seen it."Susan Glaspell was a most remarkable woman, whose work and reputation were almost lost for many years but who is now being reassessed as a pioneering feminist writer and America's first important modern female playwright. With her husband George Cram Cook, she founded the Provincetown Players, and is credited with discovering the work of Eugene O'Neill. She was a widely published and admired novelist and, though untrained, was hailed by Jacques Copeau as "a truly great actress". After George Cook died, she was romantically involved for eight years with the younger writer Norman Matson, credited as co-author of "The Comic Artist". She wrote many plays, including "Alison's House", for which she won the Pulitzer Prize in 1931. After her relationship with Norman Matson ended, she fell into depression and alcoholism and died of pneumonia in 1948.A rare letter. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

The Well of Loneliness. With a commentary by Havelock Ellis.

First edition; 8vo; original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top edge black, others uncut and original dust jacket. First edition, first impression, with "whip" on page 50. The Well of Loneliness went through only two small printings in Britain due to controversial content, as the first openly lesbian novel. It became the target of a campaign by James Douglas, editor of the Sunday Express, who wrote, "I would rather give a healthy boy or a healthy girl a phial of prussic acid than this novel." Although its only sexual reference consists of the words "and that night, they were not divided", a British court judged it obscene because it defended "unnatural practices between women". After pressure from the Conservative Home Secretary Jonathan Cape withdrew the book. However they leased the rights to a Parisian publisher who smuggled copies into Britain, those too were seized by the police and the publisher was prosecuted at trial. The Well of Loneliness "was subsequently banned in England. It was not republished until 1949. Publicity over The Well of Loneliness's legal battles increased the visibility of lesbians in British and American culture. For decades it was the best-known lesbian novel in English, and often the first source of information about lesbianism that young people could find. A very good copy, extremities lightly rubbed, spine ends bruised, occasional foxing to the end papers and the edge of the text block. The dust jacket is also very good, a little dusty, spine ends creased and reinforced with tape to the verso, a short tear to foot of front panel and vertical creases running down the length of the spine and rear panel. A nice copy of the rare first impression in a dust jacket.

Ti, kdož mluví z minulosti [Those who speak from the past]. One full-paged original print and 13 black and partly red woodcuts by Karel Svolinský

SVOLINKSÝ, Karel; DUDEŠEK, Karel; MACHAR, Josef Svatopluk: Ti, kdož mluví z minulosti [Those who speak from the past]. One full-paged original print and 13 black and partly red woodcuts, where of one double-sided and 6 full-paged, as well as typographical design by Karel Svolinský. (= Edice Zodiac, 6) Kladno: Zodiac, Svatopluk Klír (Státní tiskárne [State Printing House], Prague) 1928. Folio. [4 (blank)], 73, [1 (blank), 1 (colophon), 5 (blank)] p., 1 leaf (original print). Original artist's binding by Karel Dudešek (signed »Dudešek 1932«), with full grained ruby red pig leather and smooth light brown calf leather over wooden boards and hand-sewn capitals, with author's initials on front board, blind stamped on inlaid leather circles and gilded by hand, decorative elements on rear board, blind stamped on inlaid leather circles and coloured in black, 17 vertical ornamental lines on both boards, blind stamped, hand gilded and coloured in black and red, as well as blind stamped and gilt title on spine. One of only 45 copies printed on voluminous Fabriano hand made paper of this outstanding bibliophile edition of Josef Svatopluk Machar's long poem about seven personalities of Czech history (incl. Hus and Komenský), numbered no. 62 and bearing the author's and illustrator's genuine signature in the colophon, thus heading a total print run of 109 hand numbered copies, where of 5 printed on Japan hand made paper were marked H. C. (The remainder copies 59 were printed on Dutch hand made paper and have no autograph.) The book was brought to birth by Svatopluk Klír, a painter, graphic artist, typographer and hardcore bibliophile publisher skilled in the early 1920s by František Muzika at Aventinum publishing house. Between 1927 and 1948 Klír ran the »Zodiac« edition producing 25 volumes of extraordinary bibliophile reputation. Profusely and lavishly illustrated by Karel Svolinský, who also contributed an original woodcut on stronger brown paper bound in at the end of the book, set with a typeface in large format using elegant letters also designed by Svolinský, printed with two colours throughout in striking quality and with wide margins, this book can truly be called a jewel of Czech bibliophily in the 20th century. This is even more true considering Dudešeks skilled and elaborate binding of this copy, one of the few preserved early works of this master of Czech book binding. All three relevant exhibitions catalogues listing a total of 205 bindings executed by Dudešek only know 18 bindings dated before 1938. The original wrapper, according to the colophon also designed by Svolinský, was obviously not preserved by Dudešek, when binding this copy. Cover at edges and corners very slightly worn, binding with some minor scratches, shelf wear and stains, otherwise very fine, probably unique copy of this bibliophile edition. Not in Dudešek 1983, 1991 and 1996.

Vol. 3: 137 plates, 59 plans. Vol. 4: 51 color folding maps in matching rose cloth case, with index tabs. ******* M. AUREL STEINS PERSONAL COPY: This is a very nice copy which was likely owned by the author as hia personal letter was found used as a book mark in one of the volumes. The letter is 19 x 25.5 cm., plain toned white paper, written by Sir Aurel Stein using a very wide fountain pen and blue ink. The letter is in remarkable condition and has been folded twice, but now is quite flat and solid. * WITH A VERY RARE HOLOGRAPHIC LETTER FROM AUREL STEIN: "At Highbroom, Ewhurst, Guilford: February 15, 1925 Dear Sirs, Thanks for your letter of the 9th inst. and the account rendered with it. I note in the account of entry of 10/6 charged for the Return of Income Tax for the years 1922-3 and 1923-4. As I was absent from the United Kingdom during the whole of these financial years, no Income Tax was due from the royalties received in these years on my behalf. I accordingly request the favour of an explanation as to how this charge arises against my account, and hope for a refund of the amount. Yours faithfully A. Stein" * Perhaps Aurel Stein got his reply from the Income Tax office and or this was a copy of his letter. It was found lost as a "book mark" found in this set. A lovely insight to Stein, and his thoughts on how the British government had wrongly charged him Income Tax. A lovely holographic letter, written in pen and ink, in his usual and steady hand. Stein letters are rare and seldom found on the market. ******** FIRST & ONLY LIMITED EDITION OF 765 COPIES. We understand that this set was issued in a Limited Edition of only 765 complete copies, the balance of 250 sets were incomplete as they lacked 48 maps. * THE MAPS AND MAP BOX VOLUME: The matching map box is also in bound in rose cloth, 25.5 x 34 cm., and is 5 cm. thick. There is some minor and usual wear to the upper and lower part of the hinged flap, with some old mends. The contents consist of 47 maps each with white index tabs, plus 4 other maps index tabs: "A,B,C,D," and the index, complete as issued. **** CONDITION: This is the brightest and freshest copy we have ever had in our 45 years of tenure. The cloth of the main three volumes is nearly flawless, with bright rose color, brilliant gold stamping on the spines and front covers. There is no scuffing whatsoever, and the head/tails of the spines are fresh with a few of the usual wrinkles expected. The joints are strong, tight and the book appears to be by and large unused. There are a few bumped corners: vol. 1: the front upper right corner has a very small bump; vol. 2: faint and very tiny hint of a bump on front lower right, else none; vol. 3: front right and left, and rear corners tiny bump, front lower right a larger bump, please see scans posted to our website for photographs. * DUST JACKETS: The set of three volumes all have the original dust jackets each protected in mylar covers. There was some of the usual wear to the unprotected dust jackets, and some restoration with matching paper was performed from the inside to stabilize the tears and small missing pieces. Overall the jackets are nice with some repairs to the upper and lower spine as well as corners and a few other spots here and there. Finding this set with the dust jacket is exceptionally rare and unusual. The set if ever found most always lacks the dust jackets. *** . * BIBLIOGRAPHY: Stein 1

The George Eumorfopoulos Collection of the Chinese, Corean and Siamese Paintings

London, England: Ernest Benn Limited, 1928. This edition was limited to 560 numbered copies on Van Gelder mould-made paper, of which this is copy No. 543. (There were also 30 copies issued on Batchelor's Kelmscott handmade paper.) The complete edition of the Eumorfopoulos Collection consisted of 11 volumes; the volumes are rarely encountered as a complete set. The Chinese, Corean and Siamese Paintings was the eleventh and last in the set. Printed and bound in Great Britain. Charles Whittingham and Griggs Ltd. at the Chiswick Press, Chancery Lane. Half-buckram black binding, including the spine and the fore-edges. Dark mustard-colored buckram boards with the attractive texture of rough canvas. Fairly crisp gilt-stamped lettering to the front board and to the spine. Moderately bumped and abraded at spine head and, especially, at tail. Also with moderately bumped and lightly abraded corners. Some rubbing along the extremities but overall a rather clean binding. 18 x 12.5 inches. Note that the front hinge is cracked but holding. With vii and 39 numbered pages of text. Followed by LXXV full-page plates, 23 of which are in color. All color plates with tissue guards. All 75 plates appear to be in very good plus to near fine condition. On the front pastedown in the lower corner appears a very small and discreet paste-on stamp from a London bookseller. Some toning and scattered foxing, not affecting plates. Else a very clean copy. Downgraded to a Very Good Minus copy on account of the condition of the binding. Scarce in any condition. This volume, as the title suggests, focuses on Chinese paintings. frescoes, paintings from Turfan, and Korean and Siamese paintings. With thanks to the Victoria & Albert Museum for the following: George Eumorfopoulos [1863-1939] was a distinguished British collector of European and Oriental porcelain. He initially collected European porcelain before moving on to create a renowned collection of early Chinese art, encompassing porcelain, archaic bronzes and jades, and sculpture and paintings. In 1934 and 1935 he sold his collection at below market value, allegedly for £100,000, to the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. . First Edition. Buckram. Very Good Minus. Illus. by Various. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall. Limited Edition.

The Secret Teachings of All Ages - An Encyclopedic Outline of Masonic, Hermetic, Qabbalistic and Rosicrucian Symbolical Philosophy

Printed by H. S. Crocker for Manly P. Hall, San Francisco 1928 - 102/800 incorporated from plans by John Henry Nash of San Francisco; not signed. Elephant Folio. 245pp., 48 color plates, including frontispiece. Two of them fold-outs. Original three-quarter vellum over brown decorative paper-covered boards with gilt lettering on label of spine. Top edge gilt. Decorative endpapers. Full page color frontispiece. After the publication of "The secret Teachings of All Ages" Manly P. Hall ".went from being just another earnest young preacher in the City of Angels to becoming an icon of the increasingly influential metaphysical movement sweeping the country in the 1920s. His book challenged assumptions about society's spiritual roots and made people look at them in new ways. a gorgeous, dreamlike book of mysterious symbols, concise essays and colorful renderings of mythical beasts rising out of the sea, and angelic beings with lions' heads presiding over somber initiation rites in torch-lit temples of ancestral civilizations that had mastered latent powers beyond the reach of modern man." (Louis Sahagun).Hall wrote in 1988: "The greatest knowledge of all time should be available to the twentieth century not only in the one shilling editions of the Bohn Library in small type and shabby binding, but in a book that would be a monument, not merely a coffin. John Henry Nash agreed with me." Profusely illustrated with striking color reproductions of artwork by J. Ausustus Knapp and b/w in-text drawings. A classic example of the printing and bookbinding arts.Binding with light wear along edges and spine, light chipping at label of spine and chipping at foredge and bottom of heavy boards. Two small library stickers at tail of spine and in upper left corner of front cover. Bookplate of Theology Library School of Theology at Claremont, California on inside front cover. Library number stamped to bottom of dedication page. Minute sporadic foxing in block and small crease at top of first fold-out and at margin of second, neither affecting images. 3 x 5" library card with descriptive text glued to inside back cover. Binding in overall very good, interior in near fine condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
