Vol. 16 of 29 Atlases of Insurance Maps for Brooklyn. Brownsville

New York: Sanborn Map Company, 1928. hardcover. very good. Atlas. Lithograph with original hand coloring. Massive elephant folio. Decorative calligraphic titles, indices, and key maps. Contains a set of 64 detailed maps of Brooklyn along with changes recorded on paste-on correction slips through 1974. Quarter leather binding with gilt title on front and spine. Tear to spine of original protective canvas cover. This volume includes Kings Highway Extension and a corner of Evergreen Cemetery. The Sanborn map collection consists of a uniform series of large scale maps, dating from 1867 to the present depicting the commercial, industrial, and residential sections of some twelve thousand cities and towns in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The maps were designed to assist fire insurance agents in determining the degree of hazard associated with a particular property and therefore show the size, shape and construction of dwellings, commercial buildings, and factories as well as fire walls locations of windows and doors, sprinkler systems, and types of roofs. The maps also indicate widths and names of streets, property boundaries, building use, and house and block numbers. They show locations of water mains, giving their dimensions, and of fire alarm boxes and hydrants. Sanborn maps are an unrivaled source of information about the structure and use of buildings in American Cities. The collection includes some fifty thousand editions of fire insurance maps comprising an estimated seven hundred thousand individual sheets. The Library of Congress holdings represent the largest extant collection of maps produced by the Sanborn Map Company. The majority of the maps were acquired by the Library through copyright deposit, but the collection was substantially enriched in 1967 when the Bureau of the Census transferred to the Library of Congress a complete set. The 1,899 loose-leaf binders were particularly noteworthy because they included later editions than those previously acquired by the Library. The Bureau of the Census set of maps had been regularly updated by printed, paste-on corrections supplied by the Sanborn Map Company, whereas the Library of Congress copies were retained in the form in which they were copyrighted.

It was instantly clear that this discovery was an important one. It gave further proof of the quantum nature of light. Raman spectroscopy came to be based on this phenomenon, and Ernest Rutherford referred to it in his presidential address to the Royal Society in 1929. He won the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his work on the scattering of light and for the discovery of the effect named after him. He was the first Asian and first non-White to get any Nobel Prize in the sciences..

        City of San Diego

San Diego.: The Marston Company.. 1928.. Color poster, pictographic / pictorial map, 27 1/4 x 21 1/2 inches on sheet 29 1/2 x 23 3/4 inches. Professionally mounted on linen, minimising fold lines (where originally folded as issued), tiny area of paper loss at top right fold margin, slight separation to centre right fold edge. Tiny infill at one fold intersection. Overall very good bright condition. Jo Mora's wonderful combination of fun, historical knowledge and sense of color are highlighted in this detailed bird's eye view style map of San Diego - what there was of it, since most of the map is green (agriculture and the country) or blue for the sea. However an indication of the future is seen in a pictograph marked SUBDIVISION with a salesman expansively gesticulating to a couple with a bag marked IOWA. At sea a lookout on the ship Cabrillo exclaims "Caramba! You'd never know the old place now." The border depicts historical events. At lower left are images of six buildings and fantastical beasts who are to be seen at Balboa Park. The map was published by the Marston Company in celebration of its Golden Anniversary. .
