        Charles Cotton and his River

Manchester Sherratt & Hughes 1928. VG : in very good condition with chipped and torn dust jacket. Minor yellowing to pages 1st edition Green hardback cloth cover with gilt lettering 279mm x 213mm (11" x 8"). ix, 191pp. 13 full-page plates and 5 pairs of mounted chapter head/tail-pieces. The Beresford Vale. Cotton wrote part II of Izaac Walton's 'Compleat Angler' (5th edition, 1676) and was born at his father's estate of Beresford, Staffordshire, England. His father was a warm friend of Ben Jonson, Selden, Donne and other illustrious men. As a boy, Cotton travelled in Europe and, in 1656, married Isabella, half-sister of the regicide John Hutchinson. Though a sincere loyalist, he seems to have lived securely enough under Oliver Cromwell's Commonwealth. He inherited his father's estates on the latter's death in 1658, although unprosperous lawsuits led to their gradual decline. In 1653, Izaac Walton published the 'Compleat Angler', one of the most successful English language books ever - reprinted 300 times! Walton and Cotton were close friends and addressed each other as Father and Son. In 1674, Cotton finished his Fishing-House at Beresford, complete with his and Walton's initials entwined in cipher over its entrance. Walton recorded his visit there in the second edition of his book. Around that time, with Walton's approval, Cotton agreed to write some "particular Directions for the taking of a Trout". Thus, in 1676, appeared 'How to angle for a Trout or Grayling in a clear stream' as part II of the fifth edition of the 'Compleat Angler'.This illustrated book is a commentary on Cotton's life, his poetry and - above all - his delightful angling treatise. Best of all, it evokes that wonderful rolling countryside in the valley of the River Dove (where Stuart, the co-owner of the shop grew up!).

        The Waste Land

Horace Liveright, 1928-01-01. Third Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. New York: Horace Liveright, 1928: First Edition, Third Printing, published in August of 1928 (the first two printings were printed in 1922). This book partially comes with its scarce, original jacket--the jacket is in two pieces and missing the spine panel that could join the two together. The book itself is in Very Good condition, and the jacket is Fair Minus, for obvious reasons. The pages are clean, and slightly age toned. There is a partial, closed tear to the page facing the half title page, as shown in an image posted above. The block cloth shoes edge wear, with fraying to the corners and spine ends. A beautiful copy, well preserved. A nice, early copy, rare, with partial peices of the original jacket present.

        Le Retour du Tchad

Paris: NRF, Librairie Gallimard. [1928]. First edition, inscribed by Gide on the half-title to fellow author, Julien Green: "a Julien Green en temoignage de tres attentive affection, Andre Gide." This is a splendid association copy. Green, a novelist of American parentage who was born in Paris, was a member of the French Academy -- as was Gide. Green converted to Roman Catholicism in 1916 and was often described as a "Catholic novelist" -- a term he rejected. Still, his novels depict the anguish and despair that result from the conflict between man's spiritual and carnal desires. Gide's novels were banned by the Catholic Church. This title, LE RETOUR DU TCHAD, along with VOYAGE AU CONGO was severely critical of French colonization in Africa. 8vo; hansomely bound by H. Alix in 3/4 crushed chestnut brown morocco and marbled paper boards, spine with gilt lettering, marbled endpapers, t.e.g., original wrappers and backstrip bound in, text browned, else fine.

Vol. 16 of 29 Atlases of Insurance Maps for Brooklyn. Brownsville

New York: Sanborn Map Company, 1928. hardcover. very good. Atlas. Lithograph with original hand coloring. Massive elephant folio. Decorative calligraphic titles, indices, and key maps. Contains a set of 64 detailed maps of Brooklyn along with changes recorded on paste-on correction slips through 1974. Quarter leather binding with gilt title on front and spine. Tear to spine of original protective canvas cover. This volume includes Kings Highway Extension and a corner of Evergreen Cemetery. The Sanborn map collection consists of a uniform series of large scale maps, dating from 1867 to the present depicting the commercial, industrial, and residential sections of some twelve thousand cities and towns in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The maps were designed to assist fire insurance agents in determining the degree of hazard associated with a particular property and therefore show the size, shape and construction of dwellings, commercial buildings, and factories as well as fire walls locations of windows and doors, sprinkler systems, and types of roofs. The maps also indicate widths and names of streets, property boundaries, building use, and house and block numbers. They show locations of water mains, giving their dimensions, and of fire alarm boxes and hydrants. Sanborn maps are an unrivaled source of information about the structure and use of buildings in American Cities. The collection includes some fifty thousand editions of fire insurance maps comprising an estimated seven hundred thousand individual sheets. The Library of Congress holdings represent the largest extant collection of maps produced by the Sanborn Map Company. The majority of the maps were acquired by the Library through copyright deposit, but the collection was substantially enriched in 1967 when the Bureau of the Census transferred to the Library of Congress a complete set. The 1,899 loose-leaf binders were particularly noteworthy because they included later editions than those previously acquired by the Library. The Bureau of the Census set of maps had been regularly updated by printed, paste-on corrections supplied by the Sanborn Map Company, whereas the Library of Congress copies were retained in the form in which they were copyrighted.

It was instantly clear that this discovery was an important one. It gave further proof of the quantum nature of light. Raman spectroscopy came to be based on this phenomenon, and Ernest Rutherford referred to it in his presidential address to the Royal Society in 1929. He won the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his work on the scattering of light and for the discovery of the effect named after him. He was the first Asian and first non-White to get any Nobel Prize in the sciences..
