The Diffraction of Electrons by a Crystal of Nickel (The Bell System Technical Journal, Volume VII, Number 1)

New York: American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1928. New York: American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1928. First Edition. Wraps. Very Good. American physicist Clinton J. Davisson (1881-1958) (working with Lester Halbert Germer at the Bell Telephone Laboratory) conducted an experiment to observe the energies of electrons scattered from the surface of a crystal of nickel. They observed that there were peaks and valleys in the intensity of the scattering depending on the scattering angle, exactly as would be expected if electrons were behaving as waves rather than particles. This is the first publication of their discovery in the Bell System Technical Journal. This work supported de Broglie's hypothesis of wave-particle duality and confirmed de Broglie's formula for the wavelength of an electron. Davisson shared the 1937 Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of electron diffraction. 160 pp. 4to. Original blue paper wraps. Three number notations in ink on front cover, clean within. Housed in a custom folding case with gold embossed titling to spine.

The lovely color plates, which are interspersed among the black and white in this collection, are among the most collected of Duncan illustrations. An eight page preface by Georges Denis discusses the phenomenon of Isadora in her time, as well as the artist Jose Clara, who had watched Isadora dance since 1913. The preface also forms a tribute to Isadora, who died in 1927. The collotypes were printed at Societe de Gravure et d'Impression d'Art and the text at l'Imprimerie Ducros & Colas, Paris.         Coq d'Or. Theatre d'Art Russe presente par Anatole Dolinoff

Paris: H. Chachoin Imp, 1928.. Paris:: H. Chachoin Imp,. 1928.. Very good condition. Striking Parisian theater poster for the opera-ballet 'The Golden Cockerel' by Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. The libretto derives from Pushkin's poem 'The Tale of the Golden Cockerel', which was based on a section of Washington Irving's 'Tales of the Alhambra'. The opera was a satire of the tsarist regime and of Russian imperialism, including the Russo Japanese War. The work was completed in 1907 and was immediately banned by the Russian Palace due to the close resemblance of the vacuous King Dodon of the opera to Tsar Nicholas II. The poster artist, Georges de Pogedaieff (1897 - 1971), was an important Russian visual artist who created art for Russian ballets including the Ballet Russes de Monte Carlo. Chromolithograph with the main figures of the opera at the right, ending with the Golden Cockerel at the lower right. With text "Chants, Ballets, Tableaux Vivants" at the left. With the artist's name Georges R. de Pogedaieff, Paris at the lower right, in red. Outside the border, the word "Succes" at lower left and H. Chachoin, Imp. Paris 1928 at the lower right. Original poster archivally laid on canvas. Some small abrasions, mostly where the poster was originally folded. 48 x 34".

        The World to Play With

Oxford - Oxford University Press, 1928. Oxford - Oxford University Press, 1928 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. First edition of Ashley Dukes' The World to Play With, which has been signed by the author. Bound in quarter cloth with paper covered boards, gilt lettering and an unclipped dust wrapper. First Edition. Signed and dated by the author on the title page. Comprised of various essays on the theatre, including The Play as Composition, The Menace of the Movies, The Snob as Playgoer, and Pulse and Impulse: Dramatic Verse. Ashley Dukes (18851959) was a playwright and theatre critic who opened his own theatre, the Mercury, in a converted church hall. He turned it eventually into a workshop for poets' drama and for his wife's Ballet Rambert, the senior English ballet company. He was a man of great charm and unobtrusive common sense, and, with the means to back his judgement, had much influence on the intellectual theatre of his time. Smilingly, he rejected any form of insularity; he was a European with a taste in wine as sure as his taste in the theatre and the fastidious cadences of his prose. - DNB. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is very slight wear to the extremities, including very slight bumpingand a faint tidemark to the front board. The dustwrapper has several small closed tears measuring no more than 2. 5cm and several chips. There is some discolouration to the spine panel and some lightspots. Internally the pages are bright and generally clean, with occasional spots throughout. There are some faint tidemarks to the first and last few pages, that does not encroach on the text.         John Brown's Body

Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Doran, and Company, 1928. Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Doran, and Company, 1928 First trade edition, after the printing of 201 de luxe copies. Signed by writer Ring Lardner to the front free endpaper: "To my little Rebel friend Kate / from / John Brown (Body and Soul)." Publisher's black cloth, spine lettered in yellow. Near fine, with some light wear to the spine ends, dimming to the spine lettering, ownership stamp to the rear free endpaper, bright and clean pages. A tight and attractive copy, inscribed by author Ring Lardner. Ring Lardner, an American writer and sports columnist best known for his satirical depictions of the sports world, signed this volume as the ghost of the titular character. Comprised of 15,000 lines of blank verse, John Brown's Body is an epic poem that tells the story of the American Civil War. Published during the height of the Jim Crow laws and shortly after the revival of the Ku Klux Klan, John Brown's Body presents a radical interpretation of the Civil War. Like John Brown, who believed that militant insurrection was a necessary requirement of abolitionism, Benét, a liberal nationalist, viewed the war as a necessary, albeit violent, step in America's development into a progressive and multicultural society. Written in the style of Homer's Iliad and Virgil's Aeneid, Benét uses his masterful command of poetry and verse to create a new sense of the moral and historical significances of the Civil War.. Inscribed. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

        Decline and Fall

London: Chapman & Hall, 1928. London: Chapman & Hall, 1928 Illustrated by Evelyn Waugh. First edition, first printing. Publisher's patterned pink and black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, printed on laid paper. Near fine, with some wear and minor fraying to the spine ends, a hint of toning to the spine, bright and clean interior. Overall, a bright, excellent copy of the author's first book. Based on Waugh's experience as a teacher, Decline and Fall is a satirical novel and social satire about the absurd adventures of Paul Pennyfeather, a student at the fictional Scone College in Oxford who passively accepts the bizarre obstacles that appear in his path. After being expelled from the Scone College for an act of indecent behavior that he did not commit, Pennyfeather becomes a teacher at Llanabba Castle, where he meets the beautiful society lady Margot Beste-Chetwynde, the mother of one of his students with whom he becomes infatuated. Pennyfeather is later imprisoned for Margot's illegal activities, in which he had not taken part. Eventually, Margot, who has become Lady Metroland (the name under which she would appear in Waugh's later novels), rescues Pennyfeather from jail, and he resumes his place at the beginning of the novel as a humble student. An immediate success, Decline and Fall is an early example of the black humor that made Waugh such an acclaimed novelist.. Illus. by Waugh, Evelyn. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.
