      New York: Boni & Liveright,, 1928. Octavo. Original boards, black cloth spine with title label, gilt-patterned cloth sides. With the dust jacket, supplied. Spine label tanned, corners a little rubbed, small damp stain to fore-edge of front board, a very good copy, with the supplied jacket only very slightly chipped at the extremities, slightly sunned around spine and edges, with a few minor marks, but very nice. First edition, first printing, rare signed copy of this early collection of mystical poems, signed "J. Krishnamurti" on the front free endpaper. Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895-1986), a Brahmin who as a child had been selected and groomed by Theosophists and as the long-expected "World Teacher", but soon rejected the mantle and spent his life travelling the world, teaching, and writing. Not unlike Rabindranath Tagore, Krishnamurti became popular in the Western world as a conduit for ancient Eastern wisdom. He gained international fame with The First and Last Freedom, published in 1954 with a Foreword by Aldous Huxley, whom he had befriended in 1938 while living in California. Krishnamurti's earlier books are scarce, and signed copies are remarkably rare. This copy has the ticket of a Hollywood bookshop apparently dedicated to the guru, "Krishnamurti's Works: 1705 N. Vine St. Hollywood, California".

This is the most priced book in my substantial collection of spiritual books as owner of Open Secret Bookstore in Northern California. I would take this book with me if I were stranded on a desert island. I'm only selling it because I would like to purchase a property for a library as part of a retreat center. Trinckvel, in half olive-green crushed levant morocco, tall wide black ruled raised bands, gilt titles, with colour and gilt inlaid leather decoration in the centre panel, marbled boards and endpapers, top edge gilt rest deckled, with the original colour decorated stiff wraps bound in, including the spine panel at the rear hinge, spine panel attractively toned, book ticket "Librairie - Deom, Montreal -Canada", fine condition. Signed Presentation Copy, "a l' ami, Victor Dore, en souveniur du bon vieux temps, Clarence A. Gagnon, Montreal ci 28 Mars, 1937", - signed copies are rare. (cgc) Perhaps the most meritorious twentieth century illustrated book on the North. This along with Hemon Maria Chapdelaine and Blake's Brown Waters, are the only books that Gagnon illustrated. It is one of the corner-stones books in any collection of Canadian illustrated books. All the colour illustrations are hand stenciled (pochoir). This results in a much more attractive image, having the appearance of being hand-painted into the text. This process is distinctly better than the normal printed colour illustration process. .

        Bambi A Life In The Woods Foreword by John Galsworthy, Translated by Whittaker Chambers

      New York: Simon & Schuster(July 1928). This is the 1st edition/1st printing of the trade edition, stating on the copyright page 'First Printing in America, July, 1928' and having the same 1928 date on title and copyright pages. Printed in English for the first time in both the U.S. and U.K. in 1928. Translated by Whittaker Chambers and with illustrations by Kurt Wiese. The book is bound in green cloth with gilt spine printing and a gilt deer on the front panel. The illustrations are B&W, except for the pastedown/end page illustrations which are in greens and browns. The book is straight, clean, tight and has no handwriting or soiling; there is just a very slight amount of shelf-bumping to the cloth of the spine ends, else fine. The well preserved near fine dustjacket is crisp, clean and bright, with the price and 4 flap corners having been clipped, very slight darkening to the spine, 1 tiny edge chip and a few tiny edge nicks to upper spine and flap fold ends. The dustjacket is probably from a later printing, perhaps acknowledging sales in the original German and by the advance subscriptions from the Book of the Month Club, as it has a '75th-85th Thousand' statement at the bottom front panel. Rare to find any dustjacket with this book, particularly one in this condition. Rather a complicated printing history, as stated by the Simon & Schuster pamphlet laid in (so most likely a review copy) issued by Richard L. Simon and M. Lincoln Schuster, stating that 'Bambi was first published in Berlin by S. Fischer in 1921. It sold less than 2,000 copies. In 1926 it was published again in Vienna by Paul Zsolnay. In two years it has sold over 20,000 copies in the new German edition.' The pamphlet also speaks of the then 2-year-old Book of the Month Club having subscribed before publication of the trade edition for 50,000 copies of Bambi for July (same month it was published in trade edition by Simon & Schuster). There is also an 'Inner Sanctum at Simon & Schuster' statement on the page following the last text page, stating that Simon & Schuster were so enthusiastic about Bambi that 'they'd ordered a first edition trade printing of 75,000 copies' (quite large for that time). K. gehörte bereits 1928 zum Förderkreis des Kampfbunds für deutsche Kultur. 1933 bis 1944 unterstützte er den Nationalsozialismus in zahlreichen Reden und Schriften und gehörte zu den Unterzeichnern des Aufrufs der Kulturschaffenden zur Volksbefragung am 19. August 1934 über die Zusammenlegung des Reichskanzler- und Reichspräsidentenamtes in der Person von Adolf Hitlers. 1940 trat er der NSDAP bei. Kolbenheyer wurde in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus vielfach ausgezeichnet und 1944 von Hitler bzw. dem Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda auf eine Sonderliste - die sog. "Gottbegnadetenliste" - gesetzt, zusammen mit anderen Künstlern der Zeit wie Arno Breker, Fritz Klimsch, Georg Kolbe, Josef Thorak, Hermann Gradl, Arthur Kampf, Willy Kriegel, Werner Peiner, Leonhard Gall, Hermann Giesler, Wilhelm Kreis, Paul Schultze-Naumburg, Gerhard Hauptmann, Hans Carossa, Hanns Johst, Agnes Miegel, Ina Seidel, Hans Pfitzner, Richard Strauss und Wilhelm Furtwängler. Nach 1945 wurde er von den Siegermächten mit einem fünfjährigen Schreibverbot bestraft. In der Sowjetischen Besatzungszone SBZ wurden mehrere seiner Schriften auf die "Liste der auszusondernden Literatur" gesetzt (frei nach Wikipedia). - "Warum handgebunden? - Die wesentlichsten Vorzüge des guten Handbandes sind: Die einzelnen Druckbögen werden mit der Hand nach dem Schriftspiegel gefalzt. Die Bogenränder werden dadurch zwar ungleich, aber das Satzbild steht gerade. Um infolge der ungleichen Ränder ein späteres zu starkes Beschneiden mit der Maschine zu vermeiden, werden die Bogen einzeln, vorne und unten, mit der Pappschere auf ein Mittelmaß rauh beschnitten. Dadurch wird der Druckrand weitestgehend geschont. Als erste und letzte Lage wird dem Buche zum Schutze eine leere Papierlage hinzugefügt, welche mit einem feinen Leinen- oder echten Japanpapierfalz versehen ist. Geheftet wird der Handband nach sorgfältiger Auswahl des Heftzwirnes auf echten erhabenen oder aufgedrehten flachen Bünden und auf Pergamentriemchen (welche beim Pergamentbande durch den Rücken gezogen werden). Die Deckel werden in einem tiefen Falz angesetzt, mit den Bünden nach außen. Ein Herausreißen aus der Decke ist somit nur unter Zuhilfenahme von Werkzeug möglich. Zum Kapital wird kein schlappes maschinengewebtes Bändchen verwendet, sondern das Kapital wird von Hand mit dem Buchblock umstochen, gibt dadurch dem Rücken einen festen Abschluß und bietet zugleich dem späteren Ledereinschlag ("Häubchen") die Unterlage. Als Einbandmaterial kommen sumachgares, lichtechtes Saffian, Kalbleder, vereinzelt auch Rindsleder, ferner naturelles und weißes Schweinsleder sowie Kalbspergament zur Verwendung. Ein mit der Hand hergestelltes, dazupassendes Überzugpapier sowie Handvergoldung oder Blinddruck am Rücken ergänzen das Werk nach außen. Ein solcher Einband entspricht allen Anforderungen, die an einen Gebrauchsband gestellt werden können." This attractively bound, printed, and illuminated edition of a famous Medieval travel book is one of the finest productions of the Grabhorn Press, and was recognized in 1928 as one of the 50 Books of the Year by the AIGA design association. The content, type, illustrations, illuminations, and binding come together to create a tribute to early books and at the same time a very pleasing example of modern private press printing. This book marked the first use in America of the Bibel Gotisch type designed and cut by Rudolf Koch, and Heller & Magee observes that the work "was an ideal subject for this type and for the simple medieval illustrations of Valenti Angelo that accompany it" (not to mention the 5,100[!] initials Angelo illuminated by hand in the 150 copies). The Press had intended to offer the work for direct sale, but the entire run was purchased by Bennett Cerf (who saw the proofs on a visit to San Francisco) for issuance under the imprint of Random House. First appearing as an anonymous French manuscript in about 1357, Mandeville's account exists in many forms: there are at least 22 versions known from some 250 surviving manuscripts, and the work was printed at least 20 times in the 15th century. The book continued to appear with regularity in English during the 16th and 17th centuries, but the 1725 printing upon which the Grabhorn edition is based is said by Cox to be the "completest edition up to date," and it is characterized by Lowndes as "the best English edition." Cox tells us that although "long accepted as an authentic and valuable record of travel," the work is now known to be a fabrication, perhaps pieced together by a monk fluent in languages and with access to a large library, but with no experience as a world traveller. Regardless of its origin, it continues to provide fascinating reading as an account of the known world in the 14th century. Right corners of frame have widened slightly, as seen in photos.Charles Kvapil was born in 1884 in Anvers, Belgium. He exhibited his first work in Anvers in 1908 at the Salon d'Anvers. In 1911 he exhibited in Munich, where his works showed an influence of Cubism, and that same year he exhibited at the Triennale de Bruxelles. He was mobilized into the army in World War One. After the war he attended l'Académie des Beaux-Arts in Anvers. He began to exhibit in Paris in 1920 at the Salon des Indépendants. He moved into a studio in Montmartre where he lived for many years. He painted his models in the studio, occasionally in front of his window with the hills of Montmartre in the background. This is one of 50 copies of the "Edition de Luxe", containing 50 mounted photographic plates not included in the trade issue, and a presentation copy, inscribed by E.P. Goldschmidt to Stephen Gaselee, Pepys Librarian (1908-1919) and Fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge (1909-1943). In a tipped-in letter from Goldschmidt to Gaselee (dated 9 December 1927), Goldschmidt declares this to be "the very first copy that comes from the binder". Two other presentation copies of the book are known to the writer: one was inscribed by Goldschmidt to Hugh William Davies, cataloguer for the London booksellers W.J. Leighton, "with best thanks for help and advice from the author" (with Jonathan Hill, Catalogue 8, 1982, item 145); the other to Alice Parsons Millard, collector and proprietor of George M.         The Immortal Friend.

      New York: Boni & Liveright, 1928 - Octavo. Original boards, black cloth spine with title label, gilt-patterned cloth sides. With the dust jacket, supplied. Spine label tanned, corners a little rubbed, small damp stain to fore-edge of front board, a very good copy, with the supplied jacket only very slightly chipped at the extremities, slightly sunned around spine and edges, with a few minor marks, but very nice. First edition, first printing, rare signed copy of this early collection of mystical poems, signed "J. Krishnamurti" on the front free endpaper. Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895-1986), a Brahmin who as a child had been selected and groomed by Theosophists and as the long-expected "World Teacher", but soon rejected the mantle and spent his life travelling the world, teaching, and writing. Not unlike Rabindranath Tagore, Krishnamurti became popular in the Western world as a conduit for ancient Eastern wisdom. He gained international fame with The First and Last Freedom, published in 1954 with a Foreword by Aldous Huxley, whom he had befriended in 1938 while living in California. Krishnamurti's earlier books are scarce, and signed copies are remarkably rare. This copy has the ticket of a Hollywood bookshop apparently dedicated to the guru, "Krishnamurti's Works: 1705 N. Mirjam Foot's judgment in 1972 that it is "still indispensable for any student of bookbinding" is no less true today (in The Book Collector, Summer 1972, p.279). ¶ Gift inscription on endpaper, from Jacques Vellekoop (proprietor of E.P. A fine copy in very good 7/6 pictorial dust jacket (with illustration by C. A. Roper) with light wear and several short tears along top and bottom edges, narrow damp stain at bottom edge of front panel, and some light general dust soiling.       New York: T.B. Harms, 1928. Quarto, 268 pages. Original illustrated wrappers, cloth spine. Some minor wear and staining. The scarce first edition of the original Broadway version, published in April 1928, with the title page dated "MCMXXVIII". This edition is the only one that contains the Act II reprise of "Why Do I Love You?" which was replaced with "Dance Away the Night" for the London (and subsequent) productions. "Show Boat" was the first and defining "book musical", a musical play in which the songs and dances were integrated with a serious story. This score was in the library of George and Ira Gershwin, unfortunately without ownership marks.

      G.P. Putnam's Sons 1928 - First edition. Copy #108 in Author's Autograph Edition of only 150 copies, signed by the famous aviator on limitation page in black ink. Above that publishers' name is handwritten by someone, possibly her husband George Putnam, who worked with her in writing the book and whose family firm published it. Tiny silk 48-star American flag in cellophane pouch on front paste down, which flew with Earhart in the Friendship from Boston to Wales. 374pp. Half maroon cloth and marbled paper over boards, lettrered and ruled in gilt. Very Good or better with split hinge at front, bottom and top edges rubbed, slightly bumped corners. NEAR FINE book devoid of ownership inscriptions or marks in its original bright snakeskin cloth binding and gilt spine lettering. Slight rubbing to the head of the spine and edges of the boards, a little bowing to front board, light spotting to the preliminaries. First edition, first state (including the characters 'Martin Gaythorn-Brodie' and 'Kevin Saunderson' who were re-named in all subsequent issues - these portraits of Eddie Gaythorn-Hardie and Gavin Henderson being a little too easy to identify). 8vo. 288pp. Two-tone red and black 'snakeskin' cloth lettered in gold at spine. With a frontispiece and five illustrations by the author. Spine ends lightly chafed and with a small area of fraying to the rear gutter. A little light spotting to occasional text leaves and a minor slant to the binding. Some light pink staining to endpapers where the cloth dye has run, and a small Times Book Club label to the base of the rear pastedown, alongside the ghost of almost entirely erased former owner pencilled notes. A nice crisp copy of Waugh's extremely scarce first novel, alas missing the scarcer still dust wrapper.. Book Condition: Good. Binding: Hardcover. Jacket: No Jacket

        Sump'n Like Wings and A Lantern to See By; Two Oklahoma Plays

      New York: Samuel French, 1928. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. A nice copy with a dust jacket that has done its job in protecting the book. The book itself is very nice and the gilt on the spine is as bright as the day it was published. Front cover is very clean except for the lightest of soiling around the edges. The rear cover has some spotting of a white material that does not clean. The dust jacket is 95% complete and hangs together but is missing several chips, none larger than a quarter. Inscribed by the author on the FFEP: 'For Anatol - "We [unintelligible] to hang together." -Lynn New York Feb. 22, 1931.' Anatol Bendukov was one of the principal managers of the original company of "Green Grows the Lilacs", the basis of the Rogers and Hammerstein musical "Oklahoma". A cornerstone of espionage fiction, based on the author's experiences as a British agent, and source for the 1936 film, "Secret Agent," directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Peter Lorre and John Gielgud. A collection of short fiction that contains several important pieces, including the Nick Adams stories Indian Camp, The Doctor and the Doctor's Wife, The Three Day Blow, and The Battler. Considered one of Hemingway's early masterpieces, it earned him a place beside Sherwood Anderson and Gertrude Stein among the most promising American writers of the period. Small octavo.         Collotype of John Gray

      (n. p.), 1928. Limited Edition. No binding. Near fine. No. 30 of an unknown limitation, signed by Eric Gill. Large collotype print of John Gray, numbered 30 (possibly of 50, per the prior owner's note), signed and dated in the plate, and additionally signed by Gill in pencil in the lower lefthand corner of the illustration. Gray was an aesthetic poet of the 1890s and friend of such literary luminaries of the Decadent period as Ernest Dowson, Aubrey Beardsley, and Oscar Wilde; Gray is purported to be the inspiration for the title character in Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray. Gray later converted to Catholicism, followed by his longtime life-partner, Marc-Andre Raffalovich, a patron of the arts who supported Eric Gill, among others; Gill designed bookplates for both men, and drew a portrait of Raffalovich, as well. Offwhite paper printed in black. 16" x 12".
