URFORMEN DER KUNST: PHOTOGRAPHISCHE PFLANZENBILDER VON PROFESSOR KARL BLOSSFELDT

(BLOSSFELDT, KARL). Blossfeldt, Karl. Edited, and with a Foreword by Karl Nierendorf. URFORMEN DER KUNST: PHOTOGRAPHISCHE PFLANZENBILDER VON PROFESSOR KARL BLOSSFELDT. Berlin: Verlag Ernst Wasmuth, A.G., 1928. First Edition. Small Folio. Linen Over Boards With Gilt. Photography Monograph. Very Good -/No Jacket. 120 gravure illustrations. Text in German. In a protective clear acetate dust wrapper. Perhaps the most sought after book of photographic images from the plant world, the elegant gravure plates from Karl Blossfeldt's "Urformen Der Kunst" matted and framed have become de rigeur decoration for the walls of many a contemporary interior. As a result, complete copies of the desirable late twenties editions - printed on the recto only of the heavy stock - have become increasingly scarce and sought-after. This example of the first printing of the 1928 Verlag Ernst Wasmuth edition (cited on page 96 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume I", pages 66-67 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", and pages 48-49 of "The Book of 101 Books") is lacking its dust jacket, but is a lovely, most presentable copy whose front cover gilt lettering and ornament are still bright. There are slight smudges to the green cloth at both the heel and crown of the spine but otherwise the boards appear fresh and nice. The top edge shows a bit of light soiling and a couple of tiny brown spots, with the rest of the binding and textblock tight and clean, the plates exceptionally handsome and unmarred. There is a bit of a start to the front hinge as well as a previous owner's name and date (March '29) in ink on the inside of the front board, but all in all this is an unusually nice copy of a stellar book. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         History Of Beautiful Palm Beach

      J. WADSWORTH TRAVERS 1928 - Mylar protective cover. BOARDS: title in dark green and orange print; cluster of four oranges; name of the author in fading gilt also on the front cover; mild to moderate discoloration especially to the back board; sun-faded spine; rubs; corner bumps/light fraying; soil marks. INTERIOR: pages tanned; black printing ink smudge on page 139, black and white frontispiece of J. Wadsworth Travers. The Palm Beach Press listed on one of the back free end papers. Black and white photographs throughout. Soil mark to the top page edges. EXCERPT FROM THE PREFACE: "In 1902 he went to Nevada and became the author of "Tonopah; Past, Present and Future." He became the editor of the "Tonopah Daily Bonanza" and drove the I. W. W.'s out of Tonopah. Later with Henry Bartlett, brother of Congressman Bartlett, Mr. Travers established the "Round Mountain Nugget" at Round Mountain, Nevada, where a badger in digging a hole, had uncovered a "slab" of gold, resulting in the founding of the town. Since those days of long ago, he has published other newspapers and books, "ran" for mayor of his home town (receiving the highest vote and defeating three other candidates) and served nearly four years as postmaster, resigning to come to Florida. Mr. Travers and his devoted helpmate, his inspiration, will celebrate their silver wedding-God willing-next October. We trust that this little volume will prove interesting to the lovers of Beautiful Palm Beach, our adopted home." EXCERPT FROM HISTORY OF BEAUTIFUL PALM BEACH SECTION: "What a world of meaning in those words. Beautiful Palm Beach-a paradise even as a rough unpolished gem in a tropical setting, in the days of long ago. It was called Lake Worth at that period."It was in 1867 that Palm Beach had its beginning. At that time, the entire section from the head of the lake to Boynton, was called Lake Worth, though the Indians called it Hypoluxo. The lake itself was a body of fresh water then and had been given its name in honor of Brigadier-General Wm. Jenkins Worth, of Hudson, N. Y., by soldiers who had come here to round up Indians and transfer them to Tennessee and Indian Territory. Fort Worth, Texas, also was named in honor of Gen. Worth."         LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER

Florence Privately printed 1928 - Early printing, a pirated edition. Tall 8vo, original black moire pattered cloth with a paper label on the spine printed in red and black. 365. A pleasing copy, the black cloth a bit mellowed on the spine, a touch of expected shelving. This pirated edition was printed just shortly after the first edition and is nearly identical in format to the true first. These unauthorized pirated editions that followed the printing of the first edition would induce Lawrence in 1929 to write the essay "My Skirmish With Jolly Roger," A tirade against the numerous pirated editions of his book, the bookshops that discretely distributed them and, incidentally, against those who suggested he should issue an expurgated edition. It was not until 1960 that Penguin Books in London took on the risk of publishing an authorized edition in full and they were consequently prosecuted under the Obscene Publications Act 1959. The later acquittal proved a victory for not only the eminent authors who appeared as witnesses at the celebrated trial (including E.M. Forster, R. Hoggart, and H. Gardner) and Penguin Books, but for writing and publishing in general. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Beast With Five Fingers. And Other Stories

London, J.M. Dent. New York, E.P. Dutton and Co. 1928., 1928. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. A near fine copy in publisher's glossy black cloth with strikingly bright white titles and "disembodied hand" motif to front board and spine. In chipped and slightly browned dustwrapper with some loss to head and tail of the spine (damage to the "TH" and upper half of the "B" in beast). Front inner flap starting. Regardless a striking copy of a rarity that has influenced in some way every camp classic of the horror genre from the original Peter Lorre film through to Romero's Dawn of The Dead, Sam Raimi's "Evil Dead" and "Waxworks."
