        A Note on Religion.

London: Longmans, Green and Co. Ltd, , 1928. Duodecimo. Original blue light cards wraps printed in black. University of Cape Town library plate mounted to wrapper front panel verso, with corresponding ink-stamp to the title-page. Splitting to heads of joints, shelfmark inked to spine, small sticker sometime remove from front panel, front inner hinge tender, occasional underlining and brief marginalia in pencil. A very good copy of a fragile publication. First and only separate edition of Haggard's notorious exposition of his syncretistic personal religion, originally appended to his autobiography, The Days of My Life, published posthumously in 1926. "Haggard had absorbed from theosophy two doctrines firmly rejected by orthodox Christianity: reincarnation and the law of karma. He married these to an oppressive sense of personal sin Â… This was accompanied by a sense that the Christian Trinity was only the apex of a hierarchy of divinities which included ancient pagan deities" (Hutton, The Triumph of the Moon, Ch. 9). Highly uncommon in the original wrappers.

1928 - 1951. Wie man im beigelegten Zirkusprogramm nachlesen kann (\"Souvenir Programme of Carmo\'s Colossal Circus\"), waren \"The Five Maunters\" drei Brüder und zwei Schwestern, deren Ausführungen auf ihrer \"Treppe\" das letzte Wort in der damaligen akrobatischen Kunst waren: \"Here we have a happy family of three brothers and two sisters, whose exploits on their \"staircase\" are the last word in acrobatic skils.\" - Mit insgesamt 40 teils großen Orig.-Fotos (größtes Format ohne Karton: 25,8 cm x 20,3 cm), auf denen vor allem \"The Maunters\" abgebildet sind aber auch einige andere Künstler. Fotos teils signiert. Fotos fotografiert von Fotografen wie J. Weitzmann (Wien), Hilbinger (München), Reynolds Studios Detroit, Hirsch (Frankfurt), \"Photograph & Press Bureau, Palace Theatre Bldg. New York\", \"Graphische Anstalt gebr. Garloff\" u. a. - Weiter mit 11 Postern und einigen A4-Flyern. Format der größten Poster (Plakate): 93,5 cm x 123 cm (\"Casino\") und 62 cm x 96 cm (Cirkus Varieten Lowensberg). Die meisten Poster kündigen neben \"The Maunters\" (\"The 4 Maunters\", \"The 5 Maunters\", \"The Maunterstruppen\") mehrere Künstler an. Die Poster: 1. Hippodrome in Newcastle und 2. in Portsmouth. 3. Casino: Lille. 4. Rembrandt Theater in Holland (Hauptankündigung \"Der Sieger\" mit Käthe von Nagy & Hans Albers). 5. Poli\'s Palace 6. und 7. Groß-Variete Chemnitz. 8. Sisters Perezoff & Kiko. 9. Cirkus Varieten Lorensberg. 10. Folkets Park - Lindsberg. 11. Bremers Konzerthaus.

Manchester; New York: Sherrat and Hughes; Eugene V. Connett "The Derrydale Press", New York City, 124 East 34th Street, Telephone Caledonia 1961, 1928. One of 100 unnumbered copies. iv, 24 pp. 1 vols. Small 4to. Original gray boards, cloth spine with paper label on upper cover. Some very slight soiling and rubbing to the tips, otherwise a fine copy. In custom half brown morocco clamshell box. Rare. One of 100 unnumbered copies. iv, 24 pp. 1 vols. Small 4to. An extremely hard book to find, particularly because it does not appear to be a Derrydale Press item. The Author's marked copy of this landmark Derrydale title which went out of print almost immediately. Connett printed a further 250 copies in 1929, and then re-issued it in smaller format in 1933 with the Windward House imprint; it was reprinted again by Garden City Publishing in the late 1930s. Tipped to the front endsheet is a letter from the Derrydale Press (signed by J. Watson Over with initials "JWO") returning the book to Thomas and noting that the corrections marked were made in the "new edition."         The Front Page (Signed First Edition)

New York: Covici Friede, 1928. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED by Hecht to members of his family on the front endpaper: "To Peter, Esther, Patty Hecht / From Ben Hecht / Love." Ben Hecht's rarest and most important play, basis for three key films: in 1931 with Adolphe Menjou and Pat O'Brien, in 1974 with Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, and most importantly, the classic screwball comedy "His Girl Friday," with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell in 1940. Hecht is arguably the greatest screenwriter of Hollywood's golden era, Housed in a custom quarter-leather clamshell box. Very Good plus or better in a Near Fine, professionally restored example of the rare dust jacket. Spine slightly toned, faint foxing and a tiny stain at the page fore-edges, and light rubbing and bumping at the extremities. Jacket presents beautifully, with only a few cello-tape repairs at the verso to note.

London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1928]. 307pp, [8] publisher's advertisements. Original publisher's light blue cloth, lettered in black, dustwrapper.
