Certaine Experiments Concerning Fish and Fruite. [Introduction by Eric Parker.]

Manchester; New York: Sherrat and Hughes; Eugene V. Connett "The Derrydale Press", New York City, 124 East 34th Street, Telephone Caledonia 1961, 1928. One of 100 unnumbered copies. iv, 24 pp. 1 vols. Small 4to. Original gray boards, cloth spine with paper label on upper cover. Some very slight soiling and rubbing to the tips, otherwise a fine copy. In custom half brown morocco clamshell box. Rare. One of 100 unnumbered copies. iv, 24 pp. 1 vols. Small 4to. An extremely hard book to find, particularly because it does not appear to be a Derrydale Press item. Indeed it was printed in England and the title page has only short two lines at the bottom stating: Eugene V. Connett, "The Derrydale Press", New York City, 124 East 34th Street, Telephone Caledonia 1961." Siegel 10; Frazier T-1-a; Robb, Notable Angling Literature, pp. 90-91 (for first ed.)

New York: The Derrydale Press, 1928. First edition, one of 750 unnumbered copies. Illustrated. 1 vols. Folio. Original red cloth, t.e.g. Shaken, front inner hinge cracked, spine rubbed. Author's pencil annotations throughout. Custom red morocco backed clamshell box. First edition, one of 750 unnumbered copies. Illustrated. 1 vols. Folio. The Author's Copy, Marked for a New Edition. The Author's marked copy of this landmark Derrydale title which went out of print almost immediately. Connett printed a further 250 copies in 1929, and then re-issued it in smaller format in 1933 with the Windward House imprint; it was reprinted again by Garden City Publishing in the late 1930s. Tipped to the front endsheet is a letter from the Derrydale Press (signed by J. Watson Over with initials "JWO") returning the book to Thomas and noting that the corrections marked were made in the "new edition." Comparison of the present copy with a copy of the Windward House edition reveals that these author's alterations were implemented in the Windward House edition.         The Front Page (Signed First Edition)

New York: Covici Friede, 1928. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED by Hecht to members of his family on the front endpaper: "To Peter, Esther, Patty Hecht / From Ben Hecht / Love." Ben Hecht's rarest and most important play, basis for three key films: in 1931 with Adolphe Menjou and Pat O'Brien, in 1974 with Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, and most importantly, the classic screwball comedy "His Girl Friday," with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell in 1940. Hecht is arguably the greatest screenwriter of Hollywood's golden era, Housed in a custom quarter-leather clamshell box. Very Good plus or better in a Near Fine, professionally restored example of the rare dust jacket. Spine slightly toned, faint foxing and a tiny stain at the page fore-edges, and light rubbing and bumping at the extremities. Jacket presents beautifully, with only a few cello-tape repairs at the verso to note.

'Skin O'My Tooth' His Memoirs, by his Confidential Clerk

London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1928]. 307pp, [8] publisher's advertisements. Original publisher's light blue cloth, lettered in black, dustwrapper. Very minor rubbing to extremities, slight bubbling of cloth to boards, light browning to head and foot of spine, wrapper extensively sympathetically restored and a trifle creased and dust soiled. A little browning to blank endpapers, occasional spot of mild foxing in places, overall internally clean and crisp. A very good copy, with the scarcely seen English edition dustwrapper. Baroness Orczy (1865-1947), Hungarian-born British novelist and playwright, most fondly remembered for her adventure series centred around the protagonist of The Scarlet Pimpernel. Skin O'My Tooth comprises 12 short stories centred around protagonist Patrick Mulligan, an Irish lawyer who goes to often great lengths to see his clients vindicated. First appearing in the Windsor Magazine in 1903 it was not until 25 years later that the tales were collected together. . First edition. 8vo.

The Passion of Joan of Arc [La passion de Jeanne d'Arc] (Original double weight photograph from the 1928 film)

Paris: Studio Soulat-Boussus, 1928. Vintage double weight photograph from the set of the 1928 film. Shot by Jean Soulat and Mauric Boussus of Studio Soulat-Boussus in Paris, with respective stamps on the verso. An excessively rare photograph from Dreyer's masterpiece, capturing Maria Falconetti in what one could accurately described as "in character." Franconetti became a stage actress in Paris in 1918, and had appeared in only one other film. For this role, today still considered one of the most astonishing performances ever committed to celluloid, director Dreyer reputedly pushed her to the brink of emotional collapse. It was to be her final film role, after which she returned to producing and starring in light stage comedies, including work at the Comedie-Francais in Paris. In 1946, having fled to South America during World War II, and having suffered a lifetime of mental illness, she committed suicide in Brazil. 6.5 x 8.75 inches (16.5 x 22.5 cm). In an archival mat. Fine.

The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club

Ernest Benn, 1928. 1st edition. Hardcover. Near fine black boards with orange lettering and rule to front and spine, with near fine, clean pages and endpapers. Binding tight and square. A very nice copy indeed of the fourth outing for Lord Peter Wimsey, and quite scarce in this condition. Included is a postcard signed by the author, on the back of a promotional puff for her Lord Peter Wimsey Detective Comedy, Busman's Honeymoon, at the Comedy Theatre, Haymarket, with her typed message of 9th February 1937 to Miss E. Tayler of Bath, 'Dear Miss Tayler, I fear I can not give you any date of the publication of the novel which has been postponed so as not to interfere with the run of the Play. Yours faithfully'. The novel was presumably In The Teeth Of The Evidence. Sayers's signature on a book or piece of ephemera is surprisingly scarce.

        Legend of Sleepy Hollow, The

1928. first edition. Arthur Rackham Awakens Sleepy Hollow[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. IRVING, Washington. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. London: George G. Harrap & Co., Ltd., [1928].First trade edition. Quarto (9 13/16 x 7 1/2 inches; 250 x 191 mm.). 102, [1], [1, blank] pp. Eight color plates and thirty drawings in black and white.Publisher's green cloth pictorially stamped in gilt on front cover and lettered in gilt on spine. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Pictorial endpapers. A near fine copy in the original color pictorial dust jacket with just a few small edge chips.By 1928, the traditional Rackham book - freely and lavishly illustrated, and lushly produced - was, culturally no longer in fashion nor financially feasible. Artistically, Rackham's work was being overshadowed by a younger generation. Publisher George Harrap stepped in, took up the challenge, and, through production economies, published a new kind of Rackham book. But if the volumes were not as spectacular as in the past, the artwork was no less impressive.Latimore and Haskell, pp. 63-64. Riall, pp. 164-165.
