        Valtatiet: runoja [Highways: poems].

Helsinki: Otava 1928 - Octavo (19 x 15). Original pictorial wrappers in black, red and gold by Sylvi Kunnas; [64] pp. With six drawings by Kunnas on section dividers. A very good copy. This illustrated anthology of thirty poems by Mika Waltari (1908-1979) and Olavi Paavolainen (Lauri, 1903-1964) has been called “an undeniable high point of Futurist-inspired poetry written in the Finnish language.” The thirty poems, with titles such as “Train”, “Steel Flowers”, and “Film” reflect the authors’ fascination with progressive culture; they also incorporate innovative typographic experimentation (spacing, hyphens, ellipses) and are interspersed with illustrations of urban scenes by Finnish artist Sylvi Kunnas. “Valtatiet was not commercially successful and received mixed reviews that well illustrate the divided Finnish attitudes towards new art at the time [.] The authors were accused of slavishly following Marinetti’s instructions without creating anything of their own. One enthusiastic reviewer was inspired to use the Futurist-sounding title of '1,000 words of concrete: About Valtatiet: Personal experiences from Finland’s most Modernist poetry collection' and had the article printed in a scattered typography surrounded by geometric shapes and isolated words such as 'antenna, steel, visit'" (Sadik-Ogli 360). The Otava publishing house, which still exists, issued a facsimile reprint in 1982 (somewhat confusingly). Of the original edition, KVK, OCLC show only the copies at the Finnish and Swedish National Libraries, as well as at Bibliothèque Nordique (Paris). [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Schwurzeugen des Antisemitismus? : Luther, Herder, Goethe, Fichte, Mommsen, Bismarck

"Sonderdruck aus den "Abwehrblattern." Printer: Nowawes : Typ. Bronner [Undated. First published in 1928] - Pages yellow and brittle. Front cover and title page has the Nazi rubber stamp impression of Das Reichsinstitut für Geschichte des neuen Deutschlands [= Reich Institute for the History of the New Germany] The Reich Institute for the History of the New Germany was founded in 1935 and was an arm of the NSDAP. Its headquarters was in Berlin and it promoted pseudo science and anti-Semitism. It collected material that they felt buttressed their arguments that Jews were an inferior people. The reich was tauted to last one thousand years but it, and the institute survived for ten years. It was horrifically successful in its aims though, contaminating the minds of those Germans who did not already have a rabid hatred of Jews and facilitated the murder of most of the Jews in Europe.

The article also speaks of John Crisp who brought in three producing oil wells and the troubles he had with crooked drilling contractors, which was the basis for the movie. "He (Norman) soon went into business for himself and by 1920 had made a number of short films as a traveling film producer. After 1920 Norman established himself and his company in Jacksonville, Florida, and began producing all black films.         Mr Blettsworthy on Rampole Island

London: Ernest Benn, (1928) - An exceptionally Fine First Edition copy of the author’s allegorical satire written just after the death of his wife. The highly detailed pictorial dust jacket by Sir William Orpen depicts a naked Mr Blettsworthy watching cannibals dancing around a fire, and is a marvelous collectible in itself. The story concerns our hero shipwrecked among savages whose rituals and beliefs parody those of modern society. In the end though, he awakens to discover that all of this has been a delusion within his own insanity. This is probably Wells’ most psychopathological work. This copy comes protected in a custom-made, quite lovely red slip case. And what a dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Jo Mora's wonderful combination of fun, historical information and sense of color are displayed in this detailed bird's eye view style map of San Diego - what there was of it, since most of the map is green (agriculture and the country) or blue for the sea. However an indication of the future is seen in a pictograph marked SUBDIVISION with a salesman expansively gesticulating to a couple with a bag marked IOWA. At sea a lookout on the ship Cabrillo exclaims "Caramba! You'd never know the old place now." The border depicts historical events. At lower left are images of six buildings and fantastical beasts who are to be seen at Balboa Park. The map was published by the Marston Company in celebration of its Golden Anniversary. .

Quantum Mechanics and Radioactive Disintegration" in Physical Review, Vol 33, Second Series, No 2, February 1929, pp 127-140

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF "THE DISCOVER[Y] OF THE PHENOMENON OF QUANTUM TUNNELING" (concurrent with George Gamow) (Shaviv, The Synthesis of the Elements, 170). "Quantum tunneling is the phenomenon in which a quantum particle finds a way to penetrate a barrier that is impossible to do in classical physics because even though the kinetic energy of the particle is lower than the potential energy of the barrier, the indeterminate nature of quantum behavior leads to the kinetic energy being larger than the barrier during some periods of time. Quantum tunneling plays an essential role in a number of physical phenomena, including radioactive decay, nuclear fission and fusion and chemical bonding" (Wenner Collection). The discovery was "a major breakthrough in our understanding of radioactive decay" (ibid). Their theory "was extremely important, both because it provided a convincing demonstration that quantum mechanics applies to the atomic nucleus and because it formed the basis of other applications of quantum mechanics to nuclear physics" (Kragh, Quantum Generations, 178). When Gurney and Condon discovered the mechanism of quantum tunneling, their were trying to explain a wholly different phenomenon, that of particle decay (Wenner Collection). Gurney and Condon briefly announced their explanation of the role in quantum tunneling of alpha decay in Nature in 1928, and while Gamow was literally the first "to propose the theory… Gurney and Condon beat him to publication by a few weeks" (ibid). However the full description of Gurney and Condon's discovery was not presented until the 1929 publication of this paper. Specifically, the team describe beta radiation as quantum tunneling. "The Gamow-Gurney-Condon theory was extremely important, both because it provided a convincing demonstration that quantum mechanics applied to the atomic nucleus and because it formed the basis of other applications of quantum mechanics to nuclear physics. "The statistical nature of radioactivity had been a puzzle ever since it was recognized in the early part of the century. Numerous attempts had been made to provide a casual explanation of the origin of radioactivity, but it was only with quantum mechanics that it was realized that such attempts to make sense of radioactivity's statistical nature were futile. "As Gurney and Condon put it in [this paper], referring to these attempts: 'This has been very puzzling so long as we have accepted a dynamics by which the behavior of particles is definitely fixed by the conditions. We have had to consider the disintegration as due to the extraordinary conjunction of scores of independent events in the orbital motions of nuclear particles. Now, however, we throw the whole responsibility on to the laws of quantum mechanics, recognizing that the behavior of particles everywhere is equally governed by probability" (Kragh, 357). CONDITION & DETAILS: Full issue in original wraps. Minneapolis: American Institute of Physics. Royal 8vo. (10 x 7 inches); 250 x 175mm. Slight edge wear and fading. Bright and clean throughout. Very good condition.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]
