        Jääpeili.

Helsinki: Otava 1928 - Octavo 19x13 cm., wrappers, 68pp. Hellaakoski (1893-1952) is considered one of Finland’s greatest 20th century poets, and the present work, „Ice Mirror,“ is acknowledged as one of his greatest works as well as the highpoint of avant-garde expression in this country. It incorporates visual poetry (calligrams) and futurist elements and most successfully in original statements. „In (Hellaakoski’s) use of a seemingly limitless vocabulary and meters that differed from the norm, he was a leader in finding new directions for poetry; the experimental pictorial typography of this collection, recalling Apollinaire’s Calligrammes (1918)was so innovative that there was no one to continue the initiative until the poetry of the 1960s.“ (Schoolfield, History of Finnish Literature). This work can be viewed singularly as Finland’s greatest offering in the era of experimental modernism and avant-garde. This first edition rare, with only one copy found in North American libraries.         The Tate Gallery

Rare original poster with an intriguing and playful illustration by Whistler. Briefly the poster reproduces details of the mural that Whistler had painted for the Tate's restaurant earlier in 1928. By adding the two ladies taking tea to the foreground of the design they appear as if in the restaurant itself. As with much of Whistler's work there are small details in the image that add to the fun.Approximate size 40" tall, 25" wide

Southern Pacific Lines follow the trails blazed by the pioneers. The pioneers chose the best natural routes. The routes today offer not only great natural geographic advantages for the flow of travel and commerce but also inspiring traditions.

Southern Pacific. Copyright 1928. - Color pictographic / pictorial map, 23 1/4 x 32 inches on sheet size 25 1/4 x 33 1/4 inches. Professionally restored and mounted on linen minimising many faults: several long tears or creases including one extending vertically down the centre of the map and one extending horizontally across the map, light abrasion / creasing visible in Pacific Ocean area. Despite its faults the map displays well. An uncommon and visually appealing map poster "done in the old style" with decorative galleons and sea monsters and an elaborate compass rose. Southern Pacific's Shasta Route, Overland Route, Golden State Route and Sunset Route are marked, "following the trails of the pioneers, they are the best natural routes to the land of scenery and romance." The left and right borders are composed of vignette illustrations of historical events starting with "1862 President Lincoln signs Pacific Railway Act" to "Today Southern Pacific still building and serving." Four vignette illustrations along the upper edge relate to the four routes. The railroad runs as far south as Mexico City. David Rumsey attributes the map design to J.E.Patterson of Patterson & Sullivan, a San Francisco art firm. WorldCat shows four library listings in the United States.

Innermost Asia, Detailed Report of Explorations in Central Asia, Kan-Su and Eastern Iran: carried out and described under the orders of H.M. Indian Government, Vol. I Text; Vol. II Text; Vol. III Plates and Plans

Oxford, England: The Clarendon Press at Oxford, 1928. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Extremely scarce in the trade (only one additional set of these three volumes available at this time). Under the orders of the Indian Government, Sir Marc Aurel Stein (November 26, 1868-October 26, 1943), K.C.I.E., Director of the Indian Archaeological Survey, assembled a major travel and exploration junket to and through Central Asia and Inner Mongolia from 1913 to 1916, being the third of four major episodes of reconnaissance. Stein was an amateur archaeologist, but a quite competent ethnologist, too, and geographer, linguist and surveyor. A four-volume account of his travels and their findings from this four-year study resulted, published in 1928 by the Clarendon Press, Oxford. Available here are the first three volumes. In addition to the texts he provided in the first two volumes, descriptive lists of antiques collected were provided by F.H. Andrews and F.M.G. Lorimer, with Appendices being provided a cadre of catalogers: J. Allan E. Benveniste, A.H. Francke, L. Giles, R.L. Hobson, T.A. Joyce, S. Konow, A. von Le Coq, W. Lentz, S. Levi, H. Maspero, F.E. Pargiter, R. Smith, W.J. Sollas, R.C. Spiller, F.W. Thomas, and V. Thomsen. Handsomely bound in brown cloth, with gilt stamped lettering to covers and spines, and with a lovely gilt illustration to the middle of each cover. Paste-downs are quite sturdy and unsoiled, the text blocks are clean and tight, with only slight (understandable) waviness to text. Previous owner's inscription, neatly rendered, to all three volumes at first free endpaper. Comprises well over 500 plates, most of which are remarkable for their clarity and distinctness. The much-sought-after Atlas volume (Volume IV) comprises 52 maps, not present here. Volume I is xxxix + 547 pp. in length. The volume shows moderate wear to covers, some darkening and dust-soiling to fore-edge, bumping to three tips and a scuffing to rear bottom tip, also seemingly stained by coffee, affecting the tips to the final 20 or so pages, not even remotely affecting text. Volume II is sharp and handsome, in length, xii + 569-1159 pp. Volume III, comprising "Plates and Plans," is xi + ~505 pages of plates, unpaginated. Bumping to spine heads and feet, but minimally so. Overall, an attractive, handsomely produced, tightly bound, tank-like set of three volumes of a monumental work of archaeology, architecture, photography, travel and documentation. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.

Moscow: Zemlya i Fabrika, 1928. 324, [2] pp. 21x15 cm. In original illustrated oversized wrappers. Small tears of the wrappers, Soviet bookshop stamp on the back cover. 1 of 6000 copies. First translation. Cover design by P. Miturich. Pyotr Vasilievich Miturich (1887-1956), Russian artist. In 1910-1920 was close with such artists like Tatlin, Punin, Bruni, futurists and poet Velimir Khlebnikov (was married to his sister artist Vera Khlebnikova). John Reed is best remembered for his first-hand account of the Bolshevik Revolution, Ten Days That Shook the World - much loved by Lenin and consequently by Soviet people. Reed died in Russia in 1920, and was buried at the Kremlin Wall Necropolis, one of only two Americans to have been given this honor in Russia, the other being labor organizer Bill Haywood. The book developed from his experience, he has traveled the spring of 1905 as a war correspondent for Russia and the Balkans. Traveling to Russia, Reed was outraged to learn that the ambassador in Petrograd was inclined to believe they were spies. Reed and Robinson were re-arrested when they tried to slip into Romania. This time it was the British ambassador (Robinson being a British subject) who finally secured permission for them to leave, but not before all their papers were seized in Kiev. In Bucharest the duo spent time piecing together their journey, with Reed at one point traveling to Constantinople in hopes of seeing action at Gallipoli. These experiences led to Reed's book, The War in Eastern Europe, published in April 1916.

The Committee itself was composed of such notaries as Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, King Carol II of Romania, John D Rockefeller, Marie Curie, and Albert Einstein, who personally gathered the present manuscripts over the course of seven years (1925-32). Among the public figures who contributed to the project were dignitaries from the newly-created League of Nations' member states. "In the march towards the ideal of definitive peace, speed is proportional to the development of international solidarity. Once that solidarity has been achieved and the masses feel its effects, war will be definitively banished. [Signed] P. Djivad, Gl., Delegate of the Turkish Republic to the Preparatory Conference on Disarmament". Pax Mundi. To an unnamed addressee: "[...] (December 24). - On stationery with printed address; slight defects to edges.

4 ms. Briefe mit eigenh. U. München, 1928 bis 1931.

1928. Zus. 6½ SS. auf 5 Bll. Gr.-4to. Mit ms. adr. Kuverts.
